I don't know that you'll have a different perspective on this, but tmikpop posted about some of the goals of the possible kakao and sm "collaboration" and one of them was removing a restriction on artist performances(I didn't even know that was a thing) and having them do 20 performances a year.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but I would think that's a good thing? That's literally a tour? Artists(in general) like performing and touring. But you have everyone in the quotes crying about sm overworking the artists(including army, which is funny cause a couple days ago they were laughing about hybe disbanding all these sm flops and now they're concerned about them)

But like, am I the crazy one? I didn't see anyone celebrating the fact that these artists(their favs in a lot of cases) are gonna get to perform. Maybe its coming from the shawol side with Key just saying that he'd like to have a concert but he hasn't been able too, and seeing how much Taemin desperately wanted to perform for fans but couldn't cause of covid before his enlistment, the idea of being upset that they get to do that as much as possible would be insane to me?

If Kpop fans were predisposed to infantilization, fetishization, and victimization/othering of Asian artists, COVID exacerbated this. The "big bad" became real, affirming all their worries that Oppa needs to stay at home.

First, COVID really changed the playing field for those of us in jobs that involve extensive international travel. Some of us went from traveling every month to zero. This is true for traveling musicians, which is most SM artists. COVID put us all at home together but separately. I do think that some have gotten used to this "new normal" where no one goes abroad. I notice it in the outsized receptions at airports and with fans seeming to have soured on touring altogether unless it is directly benefitting them. The line seems to be "it's too much unless XYZ artist is playing my city."

The overwork stuff, in my opinion—and I'm focusing on English-speaking, western fans here—is tied into Orientalist views about Asia and the perceived cultural differences at play. I say perceived because there is interesting work I've read tiny chunks of about how colonizers in the past centuries created the myth of Orientalism and the East/West split. Essentially, we are more the same than we are different (duh, I mean, not rocket science) but I'm sure if you're a westerner, you could name lots of media, and even recent media, that plays on this facile idea of the strange and differentness of the East. It's tied to xenophobia, too, which was very pioneered by Xenophon who went around reporting on what he thought were backward, crazy cultures he countered in his travels during ancient times.

All this is to say that I think fans don't have a realistic idea of what a demanding career in any country looks like (because lol, omg ... ), and they cannot put their selves in the shoes of a person like a Korean popstar who has worked for countless years to enjoy an abundant career. If they could, they'd understand that while safety and health are important, they're not just about "too many tour dates". It's actually about what do those days look like, how much well-being is built in, and how much rest time is afforded?

I'm hesitant to use Haechan as an example, but I think I'll bite the bullet to say he got sick, he got COVID, and he now has a heart condition of some sort. We're not privy to the details of what that is or what its limitations are, and rightfully so because how is that our business unless he shares it? If, against medical advice, SM order Haechan to do X amount of work, he does it and then gets sick, that's grounds for a lawsuit. SM has made terrible mistakes in the past, but I do not judge them as a company operating against medical advice. If Haechan makes his own decisions against medical advice and SM fails to make an intervention, that could also be a lawsuit around duty of care, but I'm not a Korean law expert.

You might remember the Michael Jackson lawsuit against his record company regarding duty of care re his death. If the record label knew they were paying for a doctor who was doing XYZ, are they culpable for not providing safe care? Are they culpable for arranging a tour when they likely knew the state of his health? His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against AEG but ultimately AEG was not found liable. That case is really good reading if you have an interest in the duty of care that record labels have for artists.

All the above in mind, no I don't think extra tour dates are an issue because touring is the norm, and it's what artists and fans want. I also operate on the belief that SM operates legally (lol, what a thing to say right now), and does have artist well-being enmeshed in their work. Does that mean artists won't get sick? Of course not. People will always get sick or have personal problems, but whether the label is liable/culpable is a legal issue and for many a moral issue that isn't well represented in legal opinions.

personally, it's just the reliance on aggressive sexual marketing. some of the outfits, some of the choreos, and a huge part of it being stans yelling from every corner that "finally, ADULT women (some of whom are born in 2004 and 2005, lol) are doing ADULT things, because being an adult doing adult things means you have to do sexual stuff, duh. we missed sexy concepts so much."

and it's like, i don't wanna imply anything because obviously i don't know the girls personally but i keep getting reminded of stellar: fans cheering on "adult (also barely 18-20 at the time for the most part iirc) women from a desperate for attention nugu company with barely any groups under it doing adult things (that got progressively worse)", how sexy concepts are a must in kpop and of course how anyone who expresses concern/discomfort is a jealous sl*tshamer because obviously the girls choose to do all that by themselves. cut to the abuse allegations surfacing many years later. the music was fire too, though 😔

KQ promotes a family-style company that encourages their artists to work together and form deep bonds rather than pit them against each other to see who can bring in the most money. In behind vlogs for ateez, Xikers, Maddox, etc. you can see how comfortable everyone is to be in that company and the genuine smiles to come to work.

A lot of people hate on Eden and the Edenary production team for how tough they were on Hongjoong and the trainees at the time. Like DUH, these entertainment companies are still businesses at the end of the day. They value their artists, but they have to look at the business side of things as well and at the time, they were a small company with very little money to spare on trainees and using resources. So they had to be tough and see if these trainees truly had what it takes to be worth the money spent on them. And yes, KQ still has some strict rules and regulations for physical appearances, behavior, etc. because it’s all part of the kpop business appeal, but KQ is so much more lax and still allows the boys to be their genuine self more than most other companies.

Anyways, rant over. On a happier note, I absolutely loveeeeee all your writings and you don’t deserve all the BS you go through with your family and haters here on this platform. Just remember there’s still lots of us that adore you and wish for only rainbows and sunshine for you and your future 🫶

If all the people here are speaking facts, GD getting charged with drugs again, Lisa making a show in the White Horse, Rosé allegations of using cocaine on insta, and Jennie becoming a yacht girl…. adding all those companies getting sued because the only thing they do is mistreat their artist and TOP going to the moon, Korean music industry is becoming messy like 🇺🇸 and man I love to see it

People aren't trying to accept that, duh, by default, now that Korean music and entertainment industry is acknowledged by North America with agreements between agencies, companies and brands back & forth to work together for profit in both ends, of course shit is going to hit the fan. It's an economic boom for Korea in entertainment and tourism. Also this means for benefits for the government cause more scandals, while tainting the industries image, means more cover ups for elected officials to divert heat off of them when it matters.

And same here. A part of me misses when kpop was very niche and obscure. It's mainstream now and there are benefits as well as downsides. I know that I'm seen as that admin who always believes the negative or worse about YG entertainment like an anti, but I'm just a realist now cause I used to be defending and hard core standing my faves not thinking the industry was like America.

These idols becoming exposed to American industry and social norms will bring success and trouble. GD is gonna do what he wants and I'm not shocked he him. A neitzeen on Korean news post about GD (so I read on netizeen buzz) said these celebs have so much money that life becomes boring and whether they experiment or just curious about it, they usually become addicted and I agree.

I want GD to chill out and blackpink to succeed and not be caught up in shit. Also Jisoo seems unscathed so far. I'm surprised she hasn't transitioned into an American film role even if she can only speak Korean and its just a Korean role. The idol got cancelled fairly fast and that was a terrible show. I'm somewhat Appalled that nobody says anything about the fact she was willingly on one of the most disdained and poorly made shows of the last 3 years. But I guess a bag is a bag.

Ah, I'm afraid of posting this because I'm unsure of my own reasoning. People are going to read this and be like "Duh, we know that", or call me a Jimin anti because of the timing, which is why I also mentioned JK. I'll admit my bias because if JK had gotten that number 1 I would've been way happier, but I keep seeing ridiculous praise about his achievements on Twitter too and I think most of it is bullshit - just like that crap every solo spews about x member being hated by the company.

I don't know how to express this without sounding like I'm shitting on Jimin's hard work and talent, but Armys saying they're so proud of Jimin because he ended kpop (quoting PDogg) and because he got that number 1 on the Hot 100 without any radio play or a collab.... Did Jimin achieve those things, or was it Army? BTS don't have an industry backing them up so it's much harder for their music to be heard by the GP - unless their song is a huge hit, it's hard for the GP to listen to it. I understand this, which is why Army needs to stream and buy the fuck out of their music for it to do well. If Jimin hadn't released a song people generally loved, and if he wasn't super popular even among BTS for all the wonderful things he is and does, he would not have gotten that number 1. But claiming that Jimin achieved this feat all on his own is just untrue. Like Crazy isn't that huge of a hit and Jimin wouldn't have gotten that number 1 without the fans doing the most for him. I'm proud of Jimin too - we wouldn't do that shit for just anyone - but Army should be proud of Army too. Jimin could've worked way less and gotten similar results, simply because he's that loved and Army have been planning for his debut for a long time. Hybe also did a good job helping Army get Jimin that number 1. I honestly feel like this is, first of all, Army's achievement, just like that number 1 for LGO was all Army, or any other solo achievement. Except for Dynamite, Butter, PTD, and My Universe and a few other songs which had GP support, all the success BTS have gotten with their solos has been at least 70% because of Army. It's great that BTS are breaking down barriers and their popularity is undeniable. It's also true that BTS don't have the privilege of their music being shoved down everyone's throats, but, for the most part, BTS's music isn't the kind that goes viral - even if racism and xenophobia weren't an issue.

I don't know how to express this. I'm not trying to rain on Jimin, or BTS's, parade but fans exaggerate so much and I need to get off Army twitter. They talk about Jungkook's huge success with L&R as if Charlie's name and Army's efforts weren't half the reason why the song did well. All of these achievements are way less impressive than Army let's on. Having a fanbase this dedicated is amazing in itself, but it's like when talking about BTS's achievements Armys leave themselves out of the conversation as if they aren't the driving force behind BTS's achievements. I guess you could say this about any celebrity - they usually have money and connections backing them up and very few of them have an organic story of success like BTS's - but I wish fans acknowledged Army's role a bit more. BTS are huge - you have to be to have a fanbase getting you a number 1 on BB without any radio play or playlisting, but, at the same time, Jungkook's talent isn't the main reason why L&R did well, is it? It's why fans love him, maybe, but the song itself would've done just as well even if Jungkook had sounded bad in it.

I really don't know how to phrase this, but, essentially, bragging about BTS going viral when Armys are usually working overtime to make them viral is a bit contradictory. But I guess most things don't go viral by accident.

it's no secret that there's a rating in k pop and it's not just "woo who's better :D" based on that businessmen invest into groups, they get promotions, get invited to the shows, invited to the shoots at magazines etc. and the lower the rate the lower the amount of those offers. like imagine the title like "XYZ GETS BACKLASH FOR RACIST BEHAVIOUR" in some paper/issue. and if the group doesn't get those things - may just say farewell bc they're gone. no, fans won't make up for it, it's again not some indie band, that can tour in a van, it's a part of the industry

i agree with everything you say anon, fans often forget that this is an industry which means that they arent a band that is built on their own standards. they are built by a company and unfortunatly there are many parts of their lifes that they dont get to decide,,, AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SKZ HERE,,, one of the very few groups that get the opportunity to create themselves.

and also this always happens around comeback time because duh other fandoms love to sabotage when its going good for a group but its not based around that. the whole hyunjin thing didnt damage the group one bit. why? cause majority of the group success is based on jype economical stance. if they were simply a band with 8 dudes that like making music they wouldnt exist rn

Anyway. I think BH is playing dirty now. I do not like the path they're walking recently, dumbing down their music and all. But it's just my opinion. I still adore the guys though, I'm just worried they migh not like what they have to do for international market recently.

Sidenote: we must not assume that the guys are as pure as fresh snow. They are nice, polite, adoreable, professional, yes. he, suga, and asahi were in the same batch of trainees and had to (survive) live with each other for quite a while

his rap skills are really consistent and he has really good flow. also tends to start off their songs

his dancing skills are also impressive and basically just a great all-around guy

he's also really stressed from managing his group members esp because they're all children

asahi is one of their only two vocalists but he also has some good skills with music production and likes to work with ennoshita

he has a really deep but mellow voice

really shy when it comes to being onstage and meeting fans but he has the sweetest smile

tanaka is part of their dance line because boy can he bust out the moves

doesn't mind performing without a shirt. kinoshita has styled with him just wearing a jacket most of the time

he had been training for such a long time and he actually wanted to be booked for another entertainment company but was rejected (hmm i wonder which company this was ??)

his voice is a lot lower so he harmonizes with yamaguchi and hinata

he and hinata were very competitive when it came to dancing during their trainee days

suga loves being able to train hinata and yamaguchi with vocals and they have a project of covering a new song every week for the fans

tanaka, noya, kageyama and hinata also spend a lot of time in the dance studio

whenever there's a new song they like to come up with movements to add to the choreography

after a really hard day of dancing they end up falling asleep in the studio and waking up to take-out courtesy of takeda

photoshoots and styling sessions take forever since there are so many of them but also its a good time for the members to get some sleep

but kinoshita and narita do not but in the end its all worth it when they see the photos and the reactions from the fans

their music and performances are very varied since they like to show that they're versatile as much as they can

they don't really prioritize being precise and flawless, more on channeling the emotion of their songs and power in their dances

no two performances of the same song are ever the same 

KIYOKO

okay so takeda also had this genius idea of bringing out solo acts and after another round of auditions, kiyoko caught his eye

she's a bit older with idol training and recently left the group she was supposed to debut with because the company didn't treat them right

my girl kiyoko knows her rights

she's basically an all-around talent: good at singing, dancing, rapping, and visuals

takeda knew he would be dumb to overlook her and even though they've mostly been producing boy bands, maybe they'll have success with a solo female idol

kiyoko was very clear abt wanting to have more control over how she was going to be presented and also wanted the opportunity to write her own songs

and takeda and ukai were jus like well yeah duh, that's why we scouted you

kiyoko was like an immediate success

her style is def very sassy and sexy, especially with her dancing ability

Onto the ask! But agreed, I mean before the big kpop boom we saw, this was very common. Build a decent fanbase and then move to Japan or China. (Of course sometimes you see INSTANT movement in other countries but that depends on the company and such but you know what I mean) but since we do have the more global kpop era, we may see more companies do America which isn't a bad thing. It makes sense buisness wise so they will jump on it after debut or something. Thus I don't see it a bad thing for kpop groups to promote in America because hey, if in Korea they do sell western artist music who also tour there, kpop groups can also do the same ya know?

Now onto the hybe comment, I will try not to speak too much on it so I will try to summarize. I think my theory is due with merch from their main artist, they think maybe it could work with svt which maybe could but svt has a different fanbase so throwing on random merch won't make fans really want to buy (not saying some won't which kudos to you! As a fan you are allowed to consume what you please except not be a bad apple about it) so thus like the infamous water bottles which was done for bts, they thought why not do it for svt because bts fans sold it out apparently for a 2nd wave of it being sold again. (Which to this day idk why someone in the hybe team thought this was smart. Like...this is just in bad taste imo) I do wanna agree that it appears that hybe doesn't seem to have a proper art team for svt because while sometimes wild, I do know for their main artist they do have thoughtful merch based around say an album concept I recall. Kf course they will make mistakes i.e. the water bottles. I do wish it can improve because even though it is capitalism, I think fans do want decent merch. We have seen interesting ideas like svt making their own magazine and selling it lol. Of course it is hard to please because some fans want subtle merch ideas while others don't mind the vibrant pastel colors we got or some want wild ideas like svt figurines or something. Overall I hope I didn't drag this too much as I just wanted to respond back to you, I agree with many points you said so yeah cx I say let's also wait as this is barely what, a year or even less of svt being under hybe properly. and yeah i agree! i don't think it's a bad thing for groups to promote in the US, as you said, it's similar to groups expanding their fanbase by promoting in china or Japan or other asian counties, it makes sense from a business standpoint and there's nothing wrong with promoting in different countries. i just wish that some kpop stans understood that western and/or global popularity is a bonus and not a requirement for success. while they do have a global appeal, at the end of the day kpop's main audience is korea, and groups that achieve popularity in Korea have already achieved what they set out to do. but there's unfortunately a decent chunk of international fans that prioritize western popularity over anything and can't fathom that a group can be successful without being popular in the US. or they just talk as if their groups western achievements are more valuable than their Korean ones and to me that starts to look like xenophobia... since you sent this ask hybe released the caratland merch which was actually really nice, and today they also announced that there will be birthday merch for cheol (and presumably all members from here on out). we don't know what the bday merch is yet but some carats are already a bit miffed that hybe is even thinking to capitalize off the boys' birthdays... i bring both of these up bc i feel like the caratland merch proves your point that hybe is capable of designing good and thoughtful merch, and honestly this does reassure me a bit. but on the other hand them trying to capitalize off the boys' birthdays also proves that they still don't fully understand carats wants and priorities as a fanbase. which, if the future of seventeens merch is gonna be quality merch with some shitty cash grabs in between, i can live with that. they never actually sold them, but for seventeens 3rd anniversary, pledis planned to sell replicas of seventeens rings. after it was announced carats were understandably upset since the boys worked so hard for those. luckily pledis heard carats concerns and put out an apology and didn't manufacture them in the end. oh yeah listening parties are definitely just another marketing technique to boost streams. i think like with a lot of marketing techniques, it just depends on the execution. imo if they're done well it can be a good way for fans to connect while listening to an artists music, which is mutually beneficial for the company, but i can totally see a situation where companies get greedy and push it too hard. i don't know anything about what happened with them back in the day, but if you're curious why SVT had listening parties leading up to your choice, they were set up by UMG, the American distributor that SVT worked with for this cb. in this case the listening parties weren't just for boosting streams, but also likely for UMG to gauge interest. SVT isn't officially signed to a US label yet, but UMG's data from the listening parties could be used to show US labels whether or not there's enough interest for them to be signed. which if that happens we'd almost definitely see a more permanent US shop!
