This morning I showered immediately and got ready to go to the store. Mom drove me to the market in Seeley. I brought my Switch to play but put it down in favor of enjoying the scenery. Shopping went well, I guessed a total of $350 and the cost was $345. The cashiers seemed REALLY gay which was nice. On the drive home we saw a freshly hit deer which was very gross and we drove over it's legs. I didn't get as much freezer stuff because they don't have a great selection of frozen foods. I need mom or one of her coworkers to pick me up chicken from town. And maybe the extra big bags of french fries.

I had meant to stream after settling down after my groceries but I didn't. I did do my finances which I've had to do late due to a late payment from someone. I was also looking into my dental insurance situation and how to pay it, I have to do it before the 12th. I also chopped all my vegetables I just bought so I could freeze them and was hitting up anyone I could to chat while I did it. TK was down at first but she had to get ready to go somewhere instead. DV wasn't responsive. BR was getting ready for work. BD hadn't responded at first but she did in the end and agreed to chill in her server VC while I chopped. I was hoping to get some more deep conversation out of it and that's what happened. In a driving world we started talking about how we feel about relationships and view them very similarly. Like how using the word "love" is a really REALLY big deal and its a red flag when someone uses it so lightly. She also told me about this guy that's been clingy around her. The weird part is that I know I've been like him in the past but maybe not to his degree. Seeing that (and not supporting it) gave me a little bit of perspective on the times I've also been clingy or overbearing. Sort of like I was forced to step back and look at the times I was like that. It's something I sort of hide from because it's uncomfortable to admit that sometimes I behave in a way I don't like for various reasons. It got REALLY awkward when the guy she was talking about joined the world and vaguely told her "we need to talk". My first thought was he had joined and spawned in the back seat where we didn't see him and he listened in. But maybe that didn't happen. He might have just seen that we were hanging out together after she told him she wanted space, making her a liar in his eyes. Apparently their talk went well and he was understanding about the situation so I'm happy for them.

I got off and joined AE and friends while they played No Mans Sky. I was asking them sort of random questions because I was in a good and social mood after processing things with DV. I think they liked me? As in, they seemed receptive to the kind of conversation I was bringing. I was there until DS was in bed.

DS and I talked about our days and she showed me this cool thing she did with all her con badges. Also the stuff she bought for her new rats she's getting this weekend. I greatly enjoyed chatting with her tonight, I was in a great mood. We did our puzzles and caught up on the old ones, she read me a Frankie chapter from the Monster High book, and I continued the KH2 playthrough. It was a good night.

Today's topic was presence so I tried to keep that in mind while I did things today. It was harder in the morning but in the evening I had some thoughts. Part of presence is the idea that you attend to things as they are in the current moment. It's sort of submitting to whatever the current task or state of things is. Thats something I struggle with because I'm usually thinking of whatever is most important to me in general. But I know to be most effective, different times should be spent on different things. In the evening I employed that by being more attentive to the different people I talked to today. They all had their place in my evening and were beneficial when given the proper focus.

Other than that I feel a bit bad that I ditched any kind of schedule today, I did 0 work.

Covid-19: DV-2021 Green Card Lottery Results Postponed To June 6

This year, the results of the DV-2021 Green Card Lottery have been delayed because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Normally released by May 5, this year the results are expected to be announced on June 6, 2020 instead. Midterm Documentation

Introduction

This write up is for my midterm project. The goal of this project was to create interactive art using an "air piano" and computers.

"Air piano" is similar to an "air guitar", in the sense that users will be playing keys in the air to create sound. This is established by using a Pi and a laser range finder (LRF). The LRF can determine the distance from the source to the object, which act as the range for determining which key is pressed. For example, if the set maximum range is 1000, and there are 10 keys, a measured distance of 50 will result in the first key being "pressed". This is because the bins range from 0 to 1000, in intervals of 100. Each bin corresponds to a key. The distance will fall in one of the bins, which can then activate the key.

The second part is audience interactivity. Since only one person can use the LRF, it is difficult for the whole audience to participate. This can be fixed by allowing participants to use their personal computers to interact with the piece. A webserver is used to show the pressed keys, and allows others to use their keyboards and also create music. Their keystrokes are shared among all users, so everybody can create sound together.

The rest of the this writeup will discuss how I setup all of the components. Any mistakes that I have made will be explained at the end.

Setting up the Webserver

The first step is purchasing private server. This is necessary because interactivity can be established by allowing all clients to interact with a central host, which is my webserver.

I personally bought the cheapest droplet because this project does not need a lot of computing power. I selected Ubuntu with NodeJS as the system image, so that less setup is required. Then, I selected the SF location server because it is the closest one to me, which will result in lower latency.

Next, I had to login to my private server.

There were a few of methods I used to login. I used ssh, the online console. Both methods are nearly identical, but I prefer using ssh. I also used PuTTY on my Windows machine to ssh in. On my Macbook, I used console/terminal to ssh.

I entered the following commands to setup the extreme basics of Nginx (webserver). Pm2 is an easy to use process manager, which will be useful for forking processes.

After that, I organized my webserver because organization is always very important!

cd /var/www/html mkdir public

This will create a new folder called public, where I stored client sided files. That means that vistors will be shown the files inside public.

Now, I modified the configuration of Nginx so that it knows what to display.

nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/default

I changed the line containg root /var/www/html; to root /var/www/html/public;. This basically changes which directory is the root or public directory of the website. Anything in the public directory can be displayed or found by visitors.

Setting up the Server

As a side note, this whole section is a mistake that I will explain at the end of this write up. After navigating to /var/www/html, I created a new file called server.js and installed some necessary libraries.

I'm using Express to create the server because it requires very little setup. The following code block will load in the necessary libraries and initialze Express.

The following block initializes the server on localhost port 8080. Any connections to that port will establish a connection between the client and server. It includes a callback function that includes callbacks whenever data is transmitted from the client to server and when the client disconnects. When it recieves a signal post, it broadcasts the casted data to everybody that is connected. The client will handle the incoming data.

This next block basically creates another server on port 3000 that handle POST requests.

I saved the file and started it as a background process using pm2.

pm2 start server.js

This will start server.js as a process in the background, so it will be able to listen on ports 8080 and 3000.

Setting up the Client

I created a new folder in /var/www/html/public called assets to store my piano sounds. Next, I made a new file called sketch.js, which holds the client code.

This block of code splits the canvas into blocks, depending on the set width and height and connects to the websocket. It also contains a function that handles socket packets. Whenever the server sends a packet with a key 'post', this function will run. It basically sets the row and column of where the next letter will be placed and also plays the corresponding sound.

The next block of code allows limited keyboard input.

Basically, whenever a key number key from 0 to 7 is pressed, it sends a packet to the server with the key number as its data. The server will transmit the data recieved from the client to all clients, so everybody else can see what is played.

This next part contains functions that draw the letters. Based on the current row and column, it sets the block the color white. The getValue function is not needed, but was there because of an idea that I wanted but decided it would not be in the final version. There are also functions between keyA and keyG, but most of the code is the same, and to save space, I'm not including it here.

After coding all of that, I ran sudo systemctl restart nginx to restart the webserver. Going to my website now loads the sketch.

The Raspberry Pi and LRF

This section will be completed in the following days.

Mistakes

So, the main mistake is that this whole project is not the correct way to setup a webserver. Due to a lack of sleep, I misunderstood some documentation, which confused my view on a webserver.

The fix for this mistake is to just use ExpressJS for the whole thing. The whole public file system and pm2 is not necessary because Express can serve static files. Instead of having pm2 host server.js in the background, and Nginx serving index.html, sketch.js, and assets/, Nginx can just serve one javascript file that contains code that uses Express to deliver sketch.js and handle websockets.

The code might something like this:

This allows Express to handle everything. When going to the default webaddress, the public files will be served. It also starts a websocket, so clients can connect.

A short summary is that I basically complicated my delivery of files by using pm2 with Nginx, while the whole server can be hosted just using Nginx. In other words, I was using pm2 to host the server and Nginx to deliver the client. In reality, Nginx should have hosted the server and client using Express.

The introduction of many budget midi hardware and software options over the last decade has given rise to the next wave of the bedroom producer generation with skills transferrable to the stage for a paying live audience. Most standard DAWs carry an abundance of factory plugins, VSTs, loops, samples and tools including complete MIDI mapping, meaning that anything from a DJ controller to a video game joystick can be linked to controlling creative parameters or being played like an instrument! It is the versatility of digital products like Ableton and Logic Pro themselves that prove laptops to be the most powerful performance aid in 2016; sequencing, looping, recording, editing, and performing whilst triggering elements of pre-programmed audio to the effect of a full band (however this is not to suggest that they can replace an ensemble in their human skill or the characterful experience they provide). My personal venture into this realm is with the simple set up of a Novation Launchpad S, Novation Launch Control XL, M-Audio M-Track Quad and a Shure SM58. The combination of the novation products gives me a physical representation of Ableton’s session view display- I can stop and start playing each of my midi or audio loops via the pads and then adjust their level in the mix, effects sends and pan via the control units faders, rotary knobs and push buttons. The pads double up as a performance drum rack and works well as a standalone unit, giving the user a unique mixing/setting interface operated with multiple pad touches. To more efficiently manipulate Ableton in synchronisation with the primary use of the launchpad buttons, the XL control unit reflecting in-software channel strip controls, intuitive navigation to user and factory mapping presets as well as plugin/VST/device control/dedicated buttons for record, solo and mute. This is a competent and affordable way to translate an Ableton Live project into a playable medium; used in conjunction with an audio interface, the opportunity for creating and editing new elements to the existing project whilst on stage via microphones and other instruments are limited only to the sources of sound at your disposal.

In many cases like this, newer products have controller functionality as well meaning that should you want to, the Beatstep Pro could be linked to a DAW or the provided Arturia computer software to expand its utility.

However, many companies still keep their kit modular- a huge resurgence in the popularity of eurorack synthesizers is evidence that it’s not everyone’s aim to have a couple of pieces of kit crammed with buttons to control everything. Deadmau5’ show doesn’t stop at pressing play on already written stems, but does illustrate a precursor to the workflow of the Native Instruments ‘Stems’ project for DJs and electronic musicians: their foray into updating the world of digital DJing through new controllers adopting a fresh format in Traktor that separates tracks into 4 layers for quadruple the mixing possibilities. Their newest Traktor S8 controller implementing this features a controversial lack of jog wheels, even further removing the art from original turntablism.

Deadmau5 uses channel 3 on the Xone as his transitional deck to drop in more sequences from Ableton or create loops on the fly- this is useful for the same reason that DJs often have more than two channels, for further multitasking and more seamless mixing. The 4th channel however is where synth performance and other live manipulation is routed, again using the Monome and Lemur in conjunction with various soft and hard synths to play with sound over the core structure of his repertoire. Joel achieves continuity throughout both his live performance and his productions via processing buses that add the necessary compression and stereo width, side-chaining and such to close the gap between post-production and pre-production sound on the stage without being too CPU intensive. The latter is avoided with efficient grouping for effects like described and a lack of excess in plugin usage- for example, he uses a single band software limiter on the 4th channel rather than a high end Wavves/Ozone multi-band maximizer, as this does the job of bridging the aforementioned pre/post fidelity and dynamic range difference without encumbering the computer’s already pressured processor. Considering laptop standards have drastically increased in the 8 years since this information was documented it is fair to assume that Joel might not need to be so careful of overloading the system when performing in 2016, but the technological evolution in performance is really apparent when one considers how his laptop set up would compare to 90s era Daft Punk linking up countless drum machines and Akai samplers with as little as 750kb RAM to ‘super computers’ close to buckling their own trolleys.
