Banpresto Godzilla 1954 (2002)

Really happy to have this in my collection ^-^

Sculpted by Yuji Sakai this is def one of my fav sculpts ever released of the 1954 design, despite the neutral pose it has such a striking presence. The detailing on him is amazing and I enjoy the bright white of his spikes, really pretty contrast to the dark coloring of his skin and nails. He features no articulation, none of the limbs are able to move.

I was able to snag him alongside the header! Love the pictures of Yuji Sakai alongside the figure.

He is one of the bigger toys that I own, the first two pictures include the Bandai America release of the 2002 Kiryu and the Bandai DX Godzilla 2003, and the third includes the Soul of Chogokin Kiryu.

As we inch closer to summer (and all the fun and horror that entails), I find myself a little spend-happy. What can I do when the Soul of Chogokin line announced a ton of new releases for their 50th anniversary?! There’s the DX Showa Mechagodzilla, Shinkalion, Tryon 3 (aka the very first Gundam entry in the SoC line), and it doesn’t even stop there. It’s impossible for me to buy all of them, but…

DX-03 Combattler V - Part 1

Another addition the DX Chogokin line, the DX-03 is the first transformable robot in the premium Bandai model series. The first notable thing once you get in touch with the model, is its quite compact box, at least compared with the previous DX entries. The main difference here is of course the absence of the hangar, but the box quality is even better than before, with 5 separate carton boxes each housing one of the five vehicles that combines in the mighty Combattler V. A separated box is dedicated to weapons/accessories plus the display stand.

See a side-by-side comparison with the original 1993 DX Megazord, and be stunned at the difference 24 years makes! The Soul of Chogokin toy released at the end of 2016 and is currently rivaling the GX-01 Mazinger Z as the highest “first soc” purchase. There is quite a history behind Golion’s journey from leaving the hands of Toei and Bandai after 1984 where it became a worldwide youth sensation. One that involves scrubbing off its Japanese origins/contexts and a number of lawsuits fighting over its ownership.

The original Popy GB-36 DX Golion stands as the most popular chogokin selling more than 40 million 400K units despite its heavy price tag of 9800 yen (think 80s currency). Yes, even before becoming Voltron, the Golion toy was successful enough to warrant a place in the Godaikin line.

It was only after more than 30 years that Golion would return to Bandai where their first project would be a high end (and horribly expensive) collectible in their esteemed Soul of Chogokin line. Even on the packaging there is a distinct absence of Toei’s name in the copyright text, only being mentioned in the first part of the booklet explaining the original anime’s origins.

This illustration is by Tsuyoshi Nonaka, whose notable contributions include Mazinger Z, Transformers, and Super Sentai. In particular, this piece is made in homage to the 80s illustrations using a vintage painting style that was used in ads for various robot toys.
