i think i've finally figured out what exactly i found so deeply flawed in the daisy jones and the six show, to the extent that i couldn't finish it at all.

in the book, the daisy-billy-camila was never a love triangle. calling them a love triangle insinuates that there was a competition between daisy and camila for billy - a narrative that the show tried so hard to push that it sacrificed all the naunces of their characters in exchange.

book!billy was always going to choose camila. he cheated on her multiple times, yes, and was a fuckup in every sense of the word. but he had the sole redeeming quality that he was trying. trying to be the man that camila deserved, the man his daughters deserved. trying to break the cycle of abuse/neglect his father had inflicted on him. and that was why camila stayed for him, because she knew he loved her above all and was never going to leave her for daisy, as she says when she confronts daisy in the book.

show!billy has all the terrible qualities of his book counterpart, but none of the 'trying'. none of things that made him likable, if only to camila. even daisybilly show fans can't talk about his character beyond them as a couple.

and camila and daisy had such a beautiful dynamic in the books. camila viewed daisy as the twin soul of the man she loved, and in that sense she loved her too. she wanted the best for daisy always, and it showed. it showed in the way she spoke to daisy - never as if she blamed her for billy, the way she cared so deeply for daisy's heartache she wanted daisy to shield herself from it. show!camila never displays that nuance in the face of billy between them the way book!camila did, and that utterly changed/destroyed the daisy, billy and camila's relationship for drama?

and all of this in context of the ending makes it seem that daisy told billy to go fulfill his obligations to his wife, like camila was a duty for him uphold begrudgingly. and aging the characters down ruins the book's narrative that billy loved his wife his whole life, and not just until she died and he went back to daisy. it doesn't show with the same extent of the book the dedication, the love between the two of them, and the respect daisy held for that. in doing so, it does all three of their characters a fucking injustice.

daisybilly is just really interesting to me bc they’re two people who could’ve existed collaboratively for decades, bringing forth their most creative and fulfilled artistic selves and really blossoming under the kind of partnership that allows two people to really truly understand each other and in that understanding, create so much beauty. but they’re also two incredible damaged people who feel the pull of the physical more strongly (seemingly) than those around them, and those earthly temptations keep getting between them and dragging them back down… i like the choice to make them explicitly intimate bc i think it puts sex/romance on the same level as drugs/alcohol in that they both are looking for those things to fill parts of themselves they COULD heal with music, and the preoccupation with resisting the temptation they keep inviting is just as destructive and distracting as the act itself… idk it’s very fun. there’s a lot going on with them and i think making them kiss (and hopefully fuck!!!) just makes it sadder and more compelling

y'know I really wish people would start tagging negativity with the proper tags in the djats side of tumblr. people are complaining about how the show did this and that but they never add tags to be blocked or filtered. I've seen 5 different posts about negativity about a ship (mostly in regards to the show adaptation but some about the book) thats tagged just with the ship tag and without any sort of anti- something.

Y'know what, I watched the show and I bought the book, but the way people are going about criticizing the show without the proper tags is making me VERY annoyed. I dont really feel like picking up the book now, if it means I'm gonna end up like that :/

In honor of having finished this series this morning, I thought I would share it over here myself. At 110,000 words I hope I’ve found an earned happy ending for these two. At the very least, the end has me emotional.

LISTEN!!!! i love fictional toxic messes, i will be the first to promote toxicity for fictional fun okay (respectfully). the finale had the tears flowing and my heart in my ass ok. i will forever be a daisybilly stan, i was when the book came out, i was when the show started and ended and nothing will change that! i think the show did amazing in showing the different aspects of love and the intensity and safety of it, and how messy all of the characters are or could be like, non of them were perfect and i freaking love that (love the realistic look of the human condition for some of us).

i will stick up for miss daisy jones everyday, always, she’s my girl till the end idc, i will not care who disagrees. all the women on the show are powerhouses and deserve the best (totally stan cam and karen saying fuck it being together mhm!)

BUT DAISY AND BILLY ARE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER AND THEY’RE HOT AND PERFECT IN THE WAY THAT JUST MAKES YOU LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM BUT YOU CANNOT DENY THEIR AMAZING CHEMISTRY AND THE TENSION AND YEARNING AND UGH!!!

is they’re ever looking for a babysitter or a third i hope they know i’m sitting by the phone waitin for the call 😌

can't stop thinking about the choice to take the "a soulmate is someone who has all the things you don't, not someone who is suffering from the same things" line from karen, a character whose opinion on the matter actually holds some weight because we know she's a good person who did care for both daisy and billy, and give it to nicky, who has no credibility at all, whose only real function as a character is to manipulate daisy and plant seeds of doubt in her head about the people who love her 🫠

the djats series did a lot of things to please (pun intended) me specifically sometimes entirely on accident but one of the funniest examples I just realized is Karen being the one doing backup vocals on Please because technically this supports my lesbian Karen agenda Billy wrote a song about wanting to fuck Daisy and Karen was like relatable I must be a participant in this project.
