New Years Day Doctor Who Leaves Mostly Superficial Resolution

One of the problems with the more dramatic side of ‘Doctor Who’ is it can be difficult to tell how deep to go.  Family drama can especially be difficult.  This is after all intended to be a children’s show, so you don’t want to bore them with too much detail but not enough might not get the parents watching (and other adults as well).  Some years of ‘Doctor Who’ have dealt with this issue well, and other years mixed results.  It seems, somewhat, like we are in a mixed results season. 

Of course, the ‘Resolution’ of the title refers to Ryan resolving his relationship with his absent father Aaron (Daniel Adegboyega).  The problem here is that the resolution is just a bit quick.  We have spent very little time on this aspect of Ryan’s life.   It was spoken of in ‘The Woman Who Fell To Earth’ but that really was about the only time that Ryan’s anger at his father was touched on.  His relationship with Graham obviously has been affected by it, but again, we never really touch on it enough to make it a plot point of an episode.  

That makes for a somewhat awkward introduction of Aaron in this episode.  While it’s not an out of the blue introduction, we haven’t really been given cause to think about his involvement in Ryan’s life this season.  It does introduce a momentary wobble in the newly found relationship between Graham and Ryan but only a passing one.  Ryan vents a proper amount of anger at Aaron, but then seemingly all is forgotten after a traumatic event.  For the buildup, very little is actually resolved.

Of course, there are other things going on in this episode that should be talked about.  There is this whole Dalek reappearance that makes up a good chunk of the episode.  ‘Resolution’ puts itself right up there with a lot of the holiday episodes in this aspect.  Fun to watch, maybe a few thrills, but ultimately forgettable.  The self-made design of the ‘new’ Dalek is an interesting choice by the producers.  It’s a completely non-commital way of throwing a new design out there to see how fans react.  If they like it, make a few small subtle changes and you’ve got your Daleks for the next 10 years.  If the fans react the way that ‘fans’ have been reacting to most things lately, then you can easily say that this Dalek was a one-time thing.  

Most interesting about the new Dalek, however, isn’t its new shell.  It’s the new Nicholas Briggs performance of the character.  Briggs has given voice to the Daleks since the show’s 2005 return, so it is hard to imagine 14 years later anyone else trying that part on for size.   I guess this would have been the moment and I’m sure it’s something that Chris Chibnall toyed with among all of the other changes he’s made to the series.  For the first time though, we get a Dalek that actually seems in control of the situation around it. 

The Daleks in the new series have mostly seemed like insane and incapable creatures that like to kill the things they can reach but are otherwise completely ineffective at achieving their domination goals.  Briggs’ performance has, for me at least, only really added to that characterization.  Shrill, demanding, and piercing, the Daleks have mostly just caused me to turn the volume down a bit in their previous appearances.  Here though we are given a Dalek that takes its time, thinks about its decisions, and is calm and motivated to complete its goal.  It’s this Dalek, outside of its casing, that is the most terrifying Dalek we’ve been presented with so far.  I’m not really sure how I feel about the ‘Alien’ aspect of the rebirth, but a squids gotta move, right?  It’s the absolutely unyielding way that this Dalek goes about achieving the mission that makes it so scary.  I hope that we can examine this side of the Daleks more in the future.

‘Resolution’ provides a mostly satisfactory wrap up to series 11.  The internal conflict of the series, the relationship between Graham and Ryan, is left in a good place even if we aren’t entirely sure how or when we got there.  The show has taken a look at its own history and marched forward, opening itself to new fans while inviting old along.  It would be nice if we could deal away with a press that insists on telling us that ‘fans are clamoring over female Doctor’ or ‘fans outraged that show has completely changed Daleks’ or whatever they decide to tell us fans are upset about this week.  It has me at least to a point where I don’t want to be a ‘fan’, I just want to watch the show.
