Without further ado —the fancast that literally none of you asked for but I’m obsessed —A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab (which, if you haven’t read it, I recommend you do. If you have, FUCKIN TALK TO ME ABOUT IT).

Mild spoilers?? I guess??

First up, Kell Maresh:

Alex Saxon. Idk man, he’s got the withered, sad boy energy that Kell exudes. I think it’s the eyes.

Next, Rhy Maresh

LISTEN TO ME. JORDAN FISHER? LOOK AT HIM AND TELL ME IM WRONG. I fucking love Jordan Fisher and even before I was obsessed with the book, this is who I saw as Rhy. I love him.

Okay okay. Now Lila Bard:

Willa Holland. Idk man, I loved her in Arrow. She’s snarky, she’s got the vibe. Lila needs someone whose a bit more wiry because of the way she’s lived, and Willa just works imo

BUT WAIT THERES MORE

Holland Vosijk

Cillian Murphy. Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me that this man does not EXUDE the fucking self loathing, complicated, morally grey man Holland is. Tell me. I fucking love Holland and his story and CILLIAN MURPHY IS PERFECT.

And then there’s Alucard Emery.

Avan Jogia is just. He’s so fine. So fine. Pirate vibes? Royal pirate vibes? Yes absolutely. Him and Jordan Fisher together?? YES.

The Dane Twins

Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevingne. Hear me out. Hear me out. They look way too much alike (remember when they played love interests? Yeah I also repress the shit outta that). Dane does an excellent job being an awful person. And he gives the vibe. And while Cara isn’t the worlds best actress —she looks like Astrid. Which ehh isn’t a compliment necessarily because Astrid is creepy as fuck but STILL.

King Maxim and Queen Emira

Michael Beach and Kerry Washington. While I don’t particularly like Rhy’s parents because they’re kind of dicks to Kell, they’re important. Michael Beach is a fantastic actor; like everything he is in, I’m always so taken by his performance. And Kerry Washington?? She literally. She fits Emira’s description to a fucking tee. And she’s a great fucking actress.

Representatives of the Four Londons:

I was excited for this one because I adore Shades of Magic AND the amazing @veschwab is officially working on Threads of Power, plus I will soon get to read Steel Prince so why not celebrate it with a fancast?

Giancarlo Esposito as Osaron:

A voice more than a physical presence, to pick someone for Osaron I needed to find an actor with an powerful voice and it was with that in mind that I got to Giancarlo, who, as a plus, has worked with voice acting before. I might be a little biased in this since he is one of my favorite actors, but Esposito has this voice that it’s impossible not to pay attention to, it’s calm, but threatening which makes him perfect for The Shadow King. Moreover, if you have seen "Better Call Saul" or "The Boys" you know how good of a villain he can be.

Nikolaj Lie Kaas as Holland Vosijk:

In White London we have strong Scandinavian influence (“Makt” is literally Swedish for “power”) and when Schwab was asked who she would pick for Holland, she mentioned Mads Mikkelsen aka a Danish actor. So, as a little challenge to myself, I decided to look for a Danish actor as well (Mads is a popular fancast, but I personally don’t see it, though obviously he would be a good choice since even Victoria herself choose him) and that’s how I got to Nikolaj who, coincidently, has worked with Mads. He’s a little older than Holland is supposed to be, but I think his acting chops compensate that. As an award winning actor, he can definitely pull out every layer of Holland’s character, all his sadness, anger and hopes.

Harrison Osterfield as Kell Maresh/ K. L.:

For Kell, Schwab picked British actor, Eddie Redmayne, but now he is a bit too old (Kell is supposed to be 21 and Eddie is almost 40 now). Gotta be honest here, this one took me the longest to decide, what sold me was seeing Harrison on "The Irregulars of Baker Street", especially when he showed up with a red fancy coat. Osterfield is only a bit older than Kell (25) and has shown good acting skills, my only problem with him now is his height, Kell is supposed to be 6’0 ft. according to Schwab, meanwhile, Harrison is 5’10 ft., which would be Rhy’s height.

Sivan Alyra Rose as Delilah Bard:

Now, Victoria choose an American actress for Lila (Lizzy Caplan) and my little personal challenge was still on so I decided for an American actress as well. Now, the most important thing for me when looking for an actress for Delilah (outside acting, of course) was to find someone who is genderfluid (for those who don’t know, Schawb confirmed Delilah is genderfluid) and tumblr introduced me to Sivan (bless all you rp blogs). Not only a solid actress, but going through their Instagram I saw this very chaotic person that fits so well with Lila. I know the actor’s personality should not matter here, but it only helps when it comes to relating to the character so that was an unexpected plus. Like, seriously, there is a photo of them with short hair looking completely unbothered meanwhile behind them everything is on fire and there is also this post that I don’t think I even need to explain (the day a photo with short hair and this eye contact comes up I might combust) . I’m almost convinced that she IS Delilah Bard at this point.

Today is such a great day to

-draw Alucard Emery with his canonically dark skin and not draw him as a white person

-fancast actors of color as Alucard Emery and not use pictures of white people in your character boards

-cosplay as Lila if you are white and want to cosplay as a pirate and not cosplay as Alucard Emery if you are a white person

-literally just stop whitewashing Alucard Emery. Today is a great day to to that. C’mon guys.

So @sapphirealucard suggested Renan Pacheco be cast as Alucard and I just really want to draw EVERYONE'S attention to this option because if his acting is as good as his smolder, there is literally no one better suited to playing Alucard Emery. (In my opinion.)

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC - FANCAST - BY: MAGIUNIFIC

Hello there!

I am sure you don’t know me, but that is no issue at all.

So, I am a HUGE fan of the Shades Of Magic Trilogy, (SOM - ADSOM), that being said, I am still hyped that we are getting a movie! But the thing is, it’s being a while since V talked about this at all, and she can’t say much, I suppose. So, here I am with a fancast of what would make me happy to see in the movies (or at least in the first one).

I went through a bunch of fancasts, back to 2017, up until 2020, and I feel like I agreed with a part of them, but not completely, so I made my own fancast. I have to admit it is quite fun!

So, the characters and their actors:

Talking first about Kell and Lila, I feel like Cameron Monaghan would do great because his acting is really good, he’s versatile and handsome, also he has that “no friends” face that gives me Kell vibes. Zendaya as Lila I think would work really well because she is tall and slim, she is talented, and besides that, she has that kind of sharp voice and manners that I can only see in Lila so it works just right.

Rhy was really hard to find an actor that could channel his happy face and smile, he just has this vibrant sparkly face and I think Keith Powers has that too. Cillian Murphy as Holland was something I had in my mind even before I finished the first book, years ago. When I read his description, I could see clearly in my head Cillian Murphy, he has that mad, angry but charming eyes, annoyed expressions, I had no doubt on this one.

I didn’t have one specific actor in mind for Master Tieren, but Richard Gere has this calmness to him and that is exactly what Tieren is supposed to be, therefore I think it’s a good call. Naomie Harris is one of those that most people seem to agree on, and also Idris Elba, I think that, for Maxim and Emira what matters the most is that they both need that good established King and Queen relationship.

Moving on to Alucard, it was tough, to say the least. Alucard is my favorite character in the books, so I had this perfect idea of him, long-ish brown hair, tanned skin, dark blue eyes, all that royalty goodness, but that isn’t realistic, I did look into Renan Pacheco, since he is a common fancast for Alucard, but I wanted to just put people who are actors and actresses, and since Avan Jogia has a Pirate vibe, plus his long hair, I think it would be fine, maybe not perfect, but good enough.

Now, Athos and Astrid, Dane DeHaan has this smug, but cool face, he is very white, just like Athos, and he looks like he is always annoyed so I feel good about him playing Athos. Natalie Dormer just SCREAMS Astrid to me, so it was no trouble at all, she just looks like THAT villain.

For Osaron, there are a bunch of things to be adressed, he is that kind of guy who is handsome and scary in the same way, I like Rodrigo Santoro, he seems like a good pick, also because Osaron has a charisma that somehow, in my head, reminds me of some of Rodrigo Santoro’s movies. Lastly, Ojka was not that hard, I had this vison in my mind, it didn’t make much sense, but after some  research, I see that Saoirse Ronan has this innocent face, and I just happened to wonder if she could play Ojka, maybe it is a odd choice for Ojka, but I think it fits just right.

Finally, I gave my shot at this fancast, faceclaim, kind of thing with my favorite book series, I am happy with my choices and I hope you like it as well!

That would be awesome! I know a lot of people fancast him as Holland (lol I know) from the Darker Shade of Magic book series. I would love to see him tackle that role.

♡ THG Reread, Week Six: Fandom Swag

As I am not a Lionsgate fan, my fandom swag is a little…different. :)

While When the Moon is a massive part of my life, I’ve tried not to make this post too WtM-centric, though the influence is certainly apparent even in these few select pics, in which we have: 

1. My “Katniss” Funko - actually, the Snow White Funko from Once Upon a Time, but when I saw her in the store she looked so much more like Katniss than any of the movie!Katniss Funkos - she even has a little “rabbit-skin” muffler (which is from the WtMiverse and Peeta’s to boot, but still!) - that I had to take her home. I mean, she’s got long black hair (with teeny little side-braids!), hunting boots, a bow with an arrow at the string - and she’s at least one shade darker than -

2. The Lionsgate Peeta Funko, for whom I ultimately caved, in part to give fierce, lonely little Katniss her helpmate but also because he’s more consistently blonde than Josh!Peeta and he has the spear (for WtMiverse purposes :D). By the bye, Katniss is only taller than him here because she’s anchored on a base - her teeny-tiny feet can’t free-stand!

3. My “Mr. Everdeen” Funko - and yes, he’s the Bodhi Rook Funko from Rogue One. :D My roommate and I both love Bodhi and Funko finally made a special, after-the-fact POP for him, which she bought me as a surprise. I was going to keep him in the box but the more I looked at him, the more I realized he’d make an awesome Jack Everdeen (tell me his little flight suit and goggles couldn’t be mining gear if you squint!). So now he’s looking out for his little girl in -

4. My When the Mooniverse tableau. This is by no means the sum total of WtMesque stuff I own (lol!!) - this is just the “concise” display. ;) There’s a Father Christmas (with real rabbit-skin trim on his robe!), several white bears, a doe and a fawn, foxes, and a sleigh, just to name a few things. The little cabin behind Peeta was made by @ghtlovesthg, who also gave me the glass mourning dove, @reylo-the-jedi crocheted the blue-eyed white bear (with a “prosthetic” hind paw!) and gave me the teeny white bear and the red handkerchief as well, and @findingxeno sent me the teeny-tiny fox and deer figurines. ♡ (And the feather lying in front of Jack and Katniss was a present from a real mourning dove, just this past week! She was sitting in the driveway as Lucky and I were coming back from a walk and she waited till we were quite close before flying away and leaving us one perfect feather! ♡)

P.S. The Krennic Funko does correlate with someone in the WtMiverse (and no, he’s not my fancast President Snow!), but it’s somewhat spoilery at present… And yes, the tableau currently resides atop my bookshelf of fairy tales. Peeta, the isbjørn, and the cabin sit atop my stack of retellings of “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” and the Katie Thamer-illustrated The Song of Songs, Which is Solomon’s... For, y’know, no reason in particular. :D

On a sidenote: I have a wishlist of additional “fancast” Funkos that I want to get someday for my WtM tableau. As/if I manage to pick them up, I’ll add them to the display and post pics. :)

5. A few Christmases ago Target had these awesome little doll ornaments and I found a pair that look just like a festive wintertime Katniss and Prim. :) They’re usually displayed with their respective bear-princes (see Photo #4), but I was trying to keep this post small and focused. ;)

6-7. My friendship with Shannon of False Nostalgia - Shiny Scents & Sundries began shortly after I finished reading MJ and started seeking out fandom stuff on Etsy - here particularly, handcrafted fragrances. The jar labeled “Real or Not Real” contains the priceless dregs of a Peeta-scented candle (notes of bread and dandelions! ♡ I don’t think she makes these any longer so I’ve been rationing it over the past six years), and the little tins in the next pic are solid perfumes. The Katniss scent was ultimately relabeled “The Mockingjay” and has lovely earth-and-leather notes (I had to dab some on after taking the picture - I haven’t worn it in so long and it’s heavenly!), and Hey Catnip is woodsmoke and toasted marshmallow, I believe (I love woodsmoke scents and opted to give it a try, in spite of the Gale ;D). 

Shortly after discovering the magic workshop that is False Nostalgia, I threw a Hunger Games bachelorette party for a friend (I may be making a post about that later - lots of silliness and fangirling and no classic “bachelorette party” stuff whatsoever) and Shannon made a fabulous batch of customized goody bags for the attendees - oh, and did I mention? She created a fragrance called Tribute Train, based on my latte creation of the same name (rich hot chocolate + honey, spices, and toast! ♡), that I believe she still sells in a soap. Her shop is on vacation at the moment so I can’t tell you how many of these scents are currently available, alas, but they’re absolutely as awesome as you would imagine. Go favorite her shop - you won’t regret it!

8. While shopping for the aforementioned Hunger Games bachelorette party, I discovered that Bad Bitch Cosmetics had a Hunger Games line so I had to order little samples for all of the attendees. :D Unfortunately, these are no longer available (possibly for the same reason as our next item :/), but you’re more than welcome to borrow mine if you like!

9-10. No bridal party is complete without flowers, and in my bachelorette planning I was over the moon to learn that Greencycledesigns carried paper flowers made from repurposed copies of THG. I ordered a set of five (one each for the bride, we three bridesmaids, and my sister, who helped host the party) and made sure to keep an awesome one for myself (Peeta’s reaping and the bread scene flashback!). :) But the sad end of this story is that a year or so ago, I went back to Greencycle to buy another round of THG flowers, this time for a good fandom friend, but they were nowhere to be found. So I sent the shop owner a message and learned that she got a C&D notice from Lionsgate, telling her not to make flowers with “their” books anymore. (I don’t even know where to start with that!) Which I guess makes this last item a particular rarity! :(

I’m sure as soon as I post this I’ll think of something I missed! What’s in your fandom swag collection?
