This is an overhaul of an old post from 5 years ago, because I've added a bunch of stuff which unfortunately does not show up correctly anywhere but ON my blog.
Denmark, Scandinavia, and the Nordic region in Danish
Areas The Nordic countries - De nordiske lande · Norden Scandinavia - Skandinavien Kingdom of Denmark · Danish Realm - Kongeriget Danmark · Danmarks Rige The Kalmar Union · Union of Kalmaris - Kalmarunionen (1397 to 1523) Countries Denmark - Danmark Sweden - Sverige Norway - Norge Finland - Finland Greenland - Grønland · Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenlandic, lit. “Greenlanders’ land") The Faroe Islands - Færøerne · Føroyar (Faroese) Iceland - Island
Languages Danish - dansk Swedish - svensk Norwegian - norsk · nynorsk · norsk bokmål Finnish - finsk (West) Greenlandic - (vest)grønlandsk · kalaallisut Faroese - færøsk · føroyskt Icelandic - islandsk Minority languages German - tysk (spoken by the German minority in North Schleswig/South Jutland) Sámi - samisk (spoken by the Sámi people in large parts of northern Finland, Norway, and Sweden; the cultural region of Sápmi)¹ Inuktun · Polar Inuit - nordgrønlandsk · avanersuarmiutut (spoken in Northern Greenland, around Qaanaaq)² East Greenlandic - østgrønlandsk · tunumiisut (spoken in Eastern Greenland/Tunu)² Romani - romani (spoken by the Romani people) Kven - kvensk (spoken by the Kven people in northern Norway)³ Sign Language - tegnsprog⁴ National demonyms⁵ Dane - dansker Swede - svensker Norwegian - nordmand (lit. “northern man”) Finn - finne · finlænder (rare) Greenlander - grønlænder · kalaaleq Faroese · Faroe islander - færing · føroyingur Icelander - islænding German - tysker Non-national ethnicities Romani - romani Sámi - same
Specifically Danish stuff
Places in Denmark⁶ Copenhagen - København Aarhus - Aarhus · Århus (unofficial, but not incorrect spelling) Jutland - Jylland · Hovedlandet (slang) Funen - Fyn Zealand - Sjælland · Djævleøen (slang, lit. “The Devil’s Island”) Major dialects/regiolects based on location Jutland - jysk Zealand - sjællandsk Funen - fynsk Bornholm - bornholmsk All islands (including Zealand + Funen, excluding Bornholm) - ømål (lit. “island language”)
Smaller areas that used to be Denmark Schleswig-Holstein - Slesvig-Holsten⁷ Scania (Skånes län) - Skåne (around 970 to 1658) Halland (Hallands län) - Halland (around 970 to 1645, legally 1658) Blekinge (Blekinge län) - Blekinge (around 970 to 1658) The Virgin Islands of the United States - Jomfruøerne · Dansk-Vestindien (outdated) · De Vestindiske Øer (outdated) (1672 to 1917) Estonia - Estland (Hertugdømmet Estland 1206 to 1346, Øsel 1560 to 1645)⁸
Notes: 1) There are many Sámi languages and dialects, too many to list here. 2) Some argue that East and West Greenlandic are dialects of the same language and that North Greenlandic (Inuktun) is a dialect of Inuktitut. 3) Some do not recognise Kven as a separate language from Finnish. 4) Obviously, there is not 1 (one) Sign Language in the entire Nordic. There are Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic Sign (which are all related), and Swedish and Finnish Sign (which are related to each other). Danish Sign is also used in Greenland and the Faroe Islands. 5) All nationalities and ethnicities fælleskøn (utrum)/common gender (uter). 6) These are just the major parts that you probably should know 7) The whole Schleswig-Holstein area has been much disputed and is hard to date. It was definitely NOT part of Denmark 1864-1920. 8) All of Estonia was never Danish, but various parts were.
If I screwed up or you have questions, feel free to shoot me a message!

Nurses and senior management in Pirkanmaa are not seeing eye to eye, according to Helsingin Sanomat, after the wellbeing services county Pirha decided to start charging for phone consultations.
Since the middle of last month, Pirha started invoicing call-backs from staff at 30 euros a piece. So far patients have only been billed for calls made by doctors.
Pirha's head physician, Eija Tomás, argued that the new system will actually save patients money.
"The clinic visit fee and the old phone fee used to be 46 euros. If the patient's matter is such that they don't necessarily need to come in person, they now pay only 30 euros for handling their matter over the phone," she said.
Nurses have raised concerns that senior citizens living on modest pensions will lose out as healthcare moves toward telemedicine.
"These people won't become digitally savvy or wealthy, no matter how much we would like them to," one nurse told HS.
Russia's visa regime
Russia is working on easing visa procedures for several countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, reports Ilta-Sanomat, citing statements by Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zaharova.
Ilta-Sanomat asked Jarno Limnéll, a National Coalition Party MP, what Russia's long-term goal is in relaxing its visa rules.
Limnéll, a cyber security expert often cited in the media, said Russia may use visa-free travel as a tool for hybrid influence.
"If this is true, it's certainly aimed at facilitating people's access to Russia, and one reason may be this hybrid influencing and directing people towards the [Finnish] border," he said.
On Thursday the Finnish government has proposed allocating an extra 86 million euros for the Border Guard this year. The majority of the funds would go towards expediting the construction of fencing along Finland's border with Russia.
Borrowers wait for relief
Relief for mortgage holders may be slower than anticipated, reports Kauppalehti, even though Eurozone inflation slowed to 2.6 percent last month.
The 12-month Euribor, the most common reference rate in Finland, is expected to gradually decrease to below three percent around the turn of the year, according to the business daily.
"At the end of last year, we were expecting this [lower rates] a bit too much. Now it's clear that the development seems slower. But interest rate cuts will happen," Danske Bank research director Heidi Schauman said.

House Intelligence Asks Why Russia-linked Austrian Bank Funded Trump Tower Project and Never Sought Repayment
An Austrian bank implicated in various money laundering scandals became the subject of a House Intelligence Committee hearing this week when Democratic Representative Jackie Speier of California asked about its connections to Russia and the financing of a failed Trump real estate project.
"I'm curious about the Raiffeisen bank in Austria," Speier said to Heather Conley, an expert on Europe and Eurasia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and author of the Kremlin's Playbook, which looks at Russian economic influence in Europe. "You spend a whole chapter [of your book] on Austria and the banks. Can you express to us the relationship between Russia and the Raiffeisen Bank?"
The Austrian bank is just one in a handful of European banks, including Danske Bank and Deutsche Bank, that have received increased scrutiny over the past several years following allegations of money laundering and Russian influence. Raiffeisen was named in a Hermitage Fund report submitted to prosecutors in Austria this month that contained allegations of money laundering. The bank also helped finance a 2007 Trump Tower project in Canada.
"What we're seeing in the banking structures is really Austria's ability to amplify that Russian funding and take it elsewhere within Europe. So Austria is very powerfully placed, their banking system, across Central Europe, in the Western Balkans," Conley told the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday. "Raiffeisen bank, because of its size and great importance to the region, amplifies non-transparency."
Speier, meanwhile, highlighted that the bank, which was also named in an extensive investigation into Russian money laundering published by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project this month, was involved in a Trump real estate project in 2007.
"The Raiffeisen Bank actually funded a Toronto Trump Project for $300 million, and never came back after that project went bankrupt, to secure what it could in bankruptcy, in terms of the return of their funds," Speier added.
The exchange highlighted Congress's focus on President Trump's past business practices, as the Democrat-held House continues to investigate the president's ties to Russia.
"In the case of Toronto, in 2001 the Trump Organization licensed the Trump name to businessmen with links to Eastern Europe who reportedly sold a stake in a Ukrainian steel mill in 2010 to individuals linked to the Russian government. Questions have been raised about whether Kremlin money was used to finance parts of the Trump Toronto project. The question of why Raiffeisen never reclaimed the millions it lost in the tower also remains.
"From 2007 to 2014, money flowed out of Russia like wine from a broken bottle. In short order, between 2007 and 2014 there were two boom and busts. Anyone with an ounce of sense was trying to get money out of Russia and into a western currency. The wealthy were concerned with potential additional sanctions as well as the value of the ruble when the Russian government would eventually have to quit supporting.

Savon Sanomat was among the papers carrying an STT news agency report that one in two Finnish mortgage borrowers has reduced spending on daily expenses or switched to buying more affordable products due to rising prices and interest rates.
The figure is from a survey released by Danske Bank which also showed that about half have had to reduce expenditure on non-essential consumption, such as clothing purchases and restaurant meals.
"Some households have been disproportionately affected by the rise in prices and interest rates. In the big picture, however, Finnish mortgage borrowers are doing well. Although reducing everyday expenses is currently a common topic of conversation, according to the study, it affects only every second Finnish mortgage debtor," Sari Takala, Danske Bank's head of personal loan services is quoted as saying in a release.
Conducted by YouGov Finland, the survey asked respondents how they had adjusted their spending.
A quarter said that they have not had to make any changes in their finances due to rising interest rates or prices. Ten percent said that they have had to postpone the payment of some other bills. Eight percent answered that they had to rely on financial help from family members. Six percent had had to take out a new loan.
"It's good to remember that everyone has their own, personal level of inflation. If there is no room for manoeuvre in your own finances, you should find out from your bank whether, for example, an extension of the loan period or a repayment holiday would help the situation," Takala said.
Hypermarkets to the rescue?
Helsingin Sanomat looks at the possibility of hypermarkets revitalising the capital's city centre.
It notes that the idea has proven to be successful in Tampere where a Prisma hypermarket is doing well after replacing a downtown department store.
Mika Sivula, the southern Finland regional manager for Kesko, a company with about 1,800 stores in Finland and abroad, told the paper that he believes that there would be sufficient demand for a selection of hypermarkets in the centre of Helsinki.
"But the problem is that it is very challenging to find large enough business premises in the densely built-up centre," he pointed out.
One of Kesko's K-citymarkets would require nearly 10,000 square metres of retail space, preferably all under one roof. In addition, transportation connections, and access by private car, would be a key factor. In this context, HS notes the issue of frequent street works in the city centre.
City officials do not object to the idea. Helsinki's director for urban environment, Ville Lehmuskoski, told the paper, "If there's a demand for it and it's a service that's wanted, the city will try to make it easier."

Finland's high Covid death rate
Ilta-Sanomat reports that WHO figures show Finland to have registered the largest number of Covid deaths per one million inhabitants in Europe over the past 12 months.
Lasse Lehtonen, director of diagnostics at the Helsinki Universitry Hospital HUS, pointed out that the WHO collects statistical data from every country in the same way, with all persons who tested positive for coronavirus infections who have died within 30 days of infection being counted as Covid deaths.
Lehtonen considers WHO's statistical method "rough and simple", but the best available to make global comparisons.
"It is not the truth, above all it describes variations among the countries," Lehtonen said. "It does not measure the absolute number of coronavirus deaths, but how different countries rank in relation to each other."
The method used by Finland's Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) is based on a screening of death certificates which specify the coronavirus as the actual cause of death, or when it is recorded as a contributing factor.
Over the past year, more than 3,000 deaths from coronavirus infections have been recorded in Finland, which put the country at the top of the per capita list in Europe.
The overall total number of deaths attributed to coronavirus in Finland exceeded 10,000 at the beginning of July 2023. The total number in Finland is now clearly higher than in Norway and Denmark, which are roughly the same size in terms of population, but also clearly more densely populated.
Still cold, still wet
Iltalehti told readers that the latest monthly weather forecast calls for colder than usual weather for the first two full weeks of November.
Temperatures are expected to be about 1 to 3 degrees Celsius cooler than usual in large parts of the country. In southern Finland, temperatures will be more or less normal for the time of year.
Next week, starting 6 November, more rain than usual is likely to be seen in the south and in areas in the east.
"Unusually rainy weather can be expected in the southern and eastern parts of the country, while in the north precipitation should be less than average," the paper quotes Foreca meteorologist Joonas Koskela as saying.
The week starting 13 November, almost the entire country will see more precipitation than usual. The weather during the week starting 20 November is expected to bring average seasonal temperatures and precipitation.
There are signs that the final week of the month will again be warmer than average.

🇩🇰Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark
Friday, February 24, 2023
🇺🇦 Several Ukrainian soldiers who have been seriously injured have come to Denmark since the beginning of the war - exactly one year ago - to receive treatment at a Danish hospital or hospital. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince visited the State Hospital for dinner, where three Ukrainian war veterans, who have been medically evacuated to Denmark, are undergoing rehabilitation.
The EU's first medical evacuation was introduced back in March 2022. Since then, more than a thousand Ukrainian patients in need of continuous treatment or urgent medical care have been transferred to European hospitals. In Denmark, it is the Health Board that, in cooperation with the regions, distributes patients to the country's hospitals.

2001 Copenhagen - Number 7 - Rollo & King - "Never Ever Let You Go"
youtube
Neither Rollo nor King were called Rollo or King. They are Søren Poppe and Stefan Nielsen, both teachers who, unsurprisingly, met at school. Not even included in the name of the band is Signe Svendsen who got the job of singing after another singer refused to sing the line 'Take off your pants' in one of Rollo & King's previous hits.
It's not that enlightening looking back at it. However Never Ever Let You Go (Der står et billede af dig på mit bord originally) is the crowd-pleasing, show-closer of Eurovision 2001. The song the home fans were waiting for and boy can't you tell it. This might be one of the first songs at Eurovision throughout which you can hear the crowd through the singers' mics throughout the duration of the song. And that cheer as Signe takes the stage, wow.
It's jaunty, happy totally inoffensive and it almost did the double for Denmark. The harmonica adds character, the two lead singers compliment each other well and there's a ukelele too. It's simply a song that makes you smile. The perfect song for the final slot in the running order.
Also featured is Lei Moe on backing vocals. She was there for my 2000 winner Uden dig, has sung backing on Danish Eurovision entries throughout the 1990s as well as finishing 1997 in my top 48 for the year in her own DMGP song (even if she didn't quite make the cut for the top 26).
Never Ever Let You Go romped home in Dansk MGP, winning every region of the regionalised televote as well as finishing second with the juries. It was only just beaten for the Eurovision win as well.
After their almost triumph, Rollo & King went their separate ways the year after with only two albums in their back catalogue. Both Stefan and Søren tried for solo success afterwards, but ultimately couldn't achieve the success of Rollo & King in 2001. Sadly singer Søren had to step back from a musical career in 2006 as his mental health declined. More positively Signe's career took off, albeit slowly. Throughout the 2010s she had a number of albums out, including Hvem Vil Ikke Elskes Igen (Who Doesn't Want to be Loved Again) released in 2022, voted one of the ten best Danish language albums of the year.
For such a happy, successful Eurovision song, this feels as though there's a darkness at the centre of it. I treasure it all the more for that.
Here's Signe Svendsen singing the title song from her last album at the 2023 New Year's Show with Danmarks Underholdningsorkester
