Imagine a scenario where Itachi is so happy to get away from his terrible home that he becomes the pre-massacre Sasuke version of himself for anyone who'll put a warm hand on his shoulder. A version that is cheerful and expressive and clings to people who give him validation. And he saw a golden goose of validation in Danzo a mile away. Itachi knows Danzo is scum and it's not that he likes him... he just likes feeling seen and understood, even if that understanding is weaponized to groom him and sic him on his own family later.

And Danzo love-hates every second of it. There's something annoyingly endearing about that little shit blooming the moment he walks through Danzo's doors and makes himself right the fuck at home, but he's still an Uchiha and an arrogant, over-praised, under-parented little shit.
