my family: wow you are really interested in this series. You've also read an impressive amount of books by the same author in one year.
me, pointing to the coppermind: I need you to understand that I could be less normal about this. Stormlight has been going on for 14 years, the cosmere for about 20, and I am very new. There's a whole thing about this. I don't have to go through and mine books for information because others have already done that. I could be so much worse.
my family (with the attitude of the "sure jan" gif) ... sure.
me: I could be collecting data. I could be organizing the epitaphs in order by page numbers and making timelines but others have already done that for me. I still might do it. but I don't have to. I am a casual reader in comparison to other cosmere fans.
my family: .... hmm.
#anyway once I have access to particular books that occur later in the cosmere timeline again I will be making a list of information#it will be fun data collection#to be fair- I am new. I only started reading cosmere in January. and now I've read all but 1 book. so I haven't explored the coppermind muc#y'all who work on the coppermind I salute you.#cosmere#stormlight archive

still thinking about how q and data struck up a friendship over both being outsiders to humanity looking in. something about data being the one who knew more about being human in that pair. something about q repeatedly telling data he wasn’t missing much when it came to emotions. something about data being consistently kind to q despite everything and q, despite everything, being kinder to data than he was to people around him. something very much about q giving data the gift of feeling laughter and glee as thanks before leaving.
anyway I think they stay in contact. data would 100% do space email back and forth with q and not tell anyone (see: that time he broke the prime directive because he’d befriended an alien child without telling anyone). q periodically like, sends data a rant and data replies with a picture of a cat. q asks why data is sending him a picture of a useless little creature and data says that he’d heard humans used them to cheer up. q says it’s pathetic that humans require even more pathetic creatures to be happy. data asks q if that’s why q keeps bothering the captain. q sends data a picture of a bizarre cat poster instead of answering. etc.
like I just think that them befriending each other was really sweet and want that to continue forward please tell me it turns up again,
#star trek#tng#st: tng#q star trek#data soong#WHOOPS WRONG BLOG#anyway I just. I think their friendship was really good and I want to explore it more

February 19, 2015: As someone who's directionally challenged, I relate to this deeply. You're not alone, Dan. There are dozens of us! Dozens! 😣🚇🇬🇧
#dan#daniel howell#dan howell#danisnotonfire#y:2015#via:twitter#i'm not kidding i would be so fucked without google maps#i need to go somewhere at least 10-20 times before i feel comfortable navigating without it#i actually use street view to see what the building looks like and where i should park since entrances can be so weird sometimes#it took me 4 trips to feel comfortable navigating the nyc subway system by myself#and that's because i use google maps to tell me which lines to take#ironically i love exploring new places and would feel totally comfortable living somewhere completely different#as long as my phone is charged and has a data connection i'm good#oh btw if you recognize the joke in the caption you get a gold star 🌟

raaah i hate reading what seems to be a really interesting researchh study in a different country and it ends up just being: here's what they do and why what we do in the u.s. is always good and their way is bad like. i think there can be more than one way to do things and that's okay
#reading a paper on how music is used in japanese preschools and nurseries and it's really interesting!#bc there's more emphasis on music in early childhood programs (ex: ece students required to take multiple music courses in uni)#the main difference is an emphasis on learning a variety of songs and singing w/ a group or accompaniment#whereas in the us there's more emphasis on creativity and exploration (read: teachers don't tend to be as involved w/ music)#my frustration with this study is that the author is using actual data when they talk about japanese classrooms#but vast overgeneralizations w/ no similar data to base those on when talking abt us classrooms#sure. in theory there's more freedom in music creation in us preschools but it comes at the cost of less exposure to music in the classroom#idk this study is almost 20 yrs old. i don't care. whatever#there have been many changes to approaches in ece in the us since then and i'm sure the same is true in japan. i dont care.#it was still an interesting read. whatever. the unaddressed biases in this paper don't affect me and i don't care

I'm watching Star Trek: TNG: datalore, and I see when they land on the planet that there's a circular staircase made out of stone. The music in the background is classically anxious. Data seems quite detached, well the others are very concerned about the death of the environment. After nearly 3 years of neglecting the show, I had forgotten how whimsical Star Trek could be.
#star trek#star trek the next generation#star trek tng#data#Captain picard#riker#tasha yar#geordi la forge#worf#honestly#even the colors of the slate stone have me impressed#I used to think the uniforms were dorky#but I have to remember that this is in the future#and somehow looking at those same uniforms doesn't bring me the same eye-rolling reaction#these are scientists and explorers#they aren't military officials#so while I used to make fun of their space pajamas#I failed to realize that they weren't here to impress anybody#they were simply here to learn#I have neglected this show for far too long#I am so glad I started watching this again#science fiction fucking rules

When I started my current position, basically all of my immediate coworkers were in the US. Probably over 20 or 30 of us. We added one in Europe to cover that time zone.
Then we got bought out a few years ago and slowly... Now there are me and 2 others in the US (near me), 1 in Canada. 1 in England, the rest in India.
One of the not fun things about that is logging on at 730 am and having a full inbox, and people who still can't figure out how to their job asking to talk on the phone.
#i sound arrogant or whatever there#but ive trained like 5 or 10 people that have come through my job title#they gave the ones in asia the title of senior and i have had to hand hold them more than anyone#I think it's cultural that they'd rather talk on the phone and that's fine#but they also dont take the initiative to explore the data and truly understand what they're doing#even though I've held SO many meetings about all of it and the reporting software we use#tbd#sorry someone thats been here over a year has been working on a report that took me less than two hours to build#that i kept as a backup in case they didn't bet it done before the deadline#and I've walked her through exactly what i did and have made sure she understands and goes on to work by themselves#and then comes back to check with me and it's just completely the wrong direction#and it's every person minus the one in the UK who is great#anyeay i am looking for another job but remote is hard to find#and startint at a different company after 12 years is a scary prospect

wanted to learn some r so i started doing the cs50 r course. i was on a godawful school chromebook, and they've made it so you can't install linux, so i can't use vs code. rstudio cloud to the rescue, i sign up to rstudio cloud with my school email, write my first little program and save it in rstudio cloud.
i go back today. i want to carry on with my thing. i try to sign in to rstudio cloud.

Janeway/Seven in 6.08 “One Small Step”
#voyageredit#janeway x seven#j7#voyagereditmine#those lines kathryn said them with a silent 'darling'#'lets just say im encouraging you to volunteer, darling'#'you read my mind, darling'#but also thoughts when i made this set#clearly seven is annoyed with this mission which she doesnt it as important with that borg efficiency thinking of hers#janeway haters would say 'see thats janeway forcing seven doing smth she hate!!!!! molding seven to her own view'#yada yada yada u know the usual#seven is an ex borg drone yes but she is seven!!#when she made up her mind of not doing something#no one is able to force her do it if shes not willing#not even the captain#you think she is gonna just obediently do smth just because janeway order her to do so??? are we watching the same show lol??#how many times we've seen seven actively contradicts the captain lmao#in this ep is seven willing to get out of her comfort zone to do smth janeway suggests her to do#not bc janeway order or want her to do it#hence at the end seven realizes not all exploring is about gathering useful data for the sake of efficiency#its the episode i believe that made seven considers to join starfleet because of this mission
