So despite the fact that I'm not really a fighting game fan, for a long time I've been enamored with Arc System Works' animation work in their games, and between that and the interesting stuff I was seeing with their characters, I eventually decided to follow up on the story (first by reading a few comics, then watching a few lore explanation videos, then watching the Arcades + Story Modes of -SIGN-, -REVELATOR- 1 + 2, and now -STRIVE-.

I've been enjoying myself well enough (even if I am technically the fakest of fans, considering I don't actually play the games), but so far the most bewildering part of this whole experience has been watching -STRIVE-'s story mode and discovering that, of all the characters to pronounce Tír na nÓg correctly, it's fucking Sol Badguy.

Sometimes the English Dub Sol just hits the ears really well. I don’t care what the haters (I don’t know if they exist) say, I think he does a really good job. Or at least, I think he does a fun job

David Forseth did a really good job, yeah. We wouldn't have SLOPPY.mp3 without him <3 Idk if it was on the voice director or Forseth's end, but I'm glad they didn't have him try to sound exactly like Jouji Nakata's Sol because I think it would've ended up like Forseth's Xrd Sign Sol dub where he got a little too gravely for some lines. He got it just right in Strive

I really like Jouji Nakata's Sol too though, and the Strive Korean VA, Han Choi, is also SUPER good. Troy Baker did alright in Overture but I don't think he really got the energy down 100%...

Annon-Guy: Saw this video today for River City Girls 2 and it has BOTH Sol Badguy (reprised by David Forseth) and Jam Kuradoberi (voiced by Xanthe Huynh) as Assist Characters you can recruit. I know Kunio-Kun/River City Girls is owned by ARC System Works now, but I have to say that I didn't expect that.

Well, it's definitely an interesting plug... also if Xanthe Huynh ends up doing the dub voice for Jam in the future, that'd be NEAT.

I'm actually falling behind on my beatemup games...

What do you think of the dub for Sol (Strive)? Not necessarily in a preference way, but just the tone and delivery and stuff. I like his speech when Jack-O is motorboating the divinity out of I-No (rough description)

I like it!! The EN dub is actually the one I usually have on for Strive, though I still really like Jouji's JP dub and honestly people are sleeping on Han Choi's Korean dub for Strive Sol, he nailed it. I love how deep his voice is, it makes me wish I knew more Korean to get a better impression of it.

David Forseth's EN dub for Xrd Sign Sol is kinda... rough... but whether it was just a change in voice direction or a general skill improvement on Forseth's end, he did WAY better for Strive and it's cool they were able to bring him back. And, of course, we wouldn't have S L O P P Y.mp3 without him. I think (for Strive) he did a good job balancing the line between being serious/gruff when it was needed, but then being a little goofy when it made sense too, like the hose-on-full-blast-directly-into-the-mouth gurgling noise he makes getting annihilated by Ram's laser super lol

I never really paid attention to this, but does Sol's voice sounds distinct from Frederick's in SIGN, at least in the Japanese version? In GG Begin, when Frederick completes his metamorphosis into a Gear, it's mentioned that his voice becomes much deeper and gruffer than when he was human.

I'm not gonna say it's 100% consistent.

The times in-game when Sol chants "Dragon Install", prior to the first time we actually saw a change in his appearance (post-XX games, GG2 Overture) there was only ONE instance where his voice "might" have changed and that was in the Golden Disc Drama CD (Crime and Justice, Chapter 7, Volume 2).  Otherwise GGX and GGXX didn't put much emphasis on the change for Dragon Install.

A similar moment happened in Chapter 10 of Side Black when Sol faced off against Dizzy and used Dragon Install... but the change in his voice never occurred (no echo/audio distortion).

GG2 Overture (when Johji Nakata took over the role) was the first time they made an effort to put a change in his voice during Dragon Install as a transformation.

And actually, this cannot be observed in the English dub (Troy Baker's voice)... you can only hear it in Sol's voice in the Japanese dub in GG2.

Then of course, we saw Dragon Install change dramatically for the first time in Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign.

I can't say for certain if David Forseth was given vocal direction to make his voice "different" for Dragon Install or not (or if his gruff voice was chosen for that part of the role), but in the case of Johji Nakata, it was definitely more guttural and beast-like.

Based on the evidence I’ve shown, it appears that after GG2 Overture, they made a lot of directional changes with Sol’s voicework, so it mostly only applies to the Xrd Series and Sign (though GG Begin was written after Xrd).

This was never mentioned in the older novels, either, I’m afraid.
