Neon Indian's digital psychedelia is one way of expressing hauntology in music, there are a myriad of others. One only has to check Memory Tapes' Seek Magic to hear what I mean. The disc ostensibly belongs to the genre of chillwave, yet the latter, if you ask me, remains more of a catch-all term for everything that expresses a certain detachment towards the reality, which gets refracted through the lens of nostalgia. Memory Tapes does epitomize what the term defines, because you feel like you're experiencing a beacon from a radio station that plays the tunes you should've recognized, but you also struggle to remember. Nonetheless, this doesn't result into a possible retromania, hauntology's rarely about that, because the latter deals with the notion of a future departed.

Fun bit of history: The "Otherkin Emblem" was created by Kaltezar/Dayve J. Hawking (a dragon) in 2002
Tumblr media
"The story goes as such, I was driving down the highway, and noticed on the back of a car were displayed three stickers, the 'rainbow pride' sticker, a cross, and a fish. I knew then with out really thinking the driver was gay or a supporter, Christian and a creationist. (Yes, I know, some of those are almost contradictions in themselves.) It dawned on me their was no universally accepted 'symbol' for otherkin. So. with graphic programs loaded up, I decided to try and change the situation. Recalling how the logo to the dragon sunglasses company looked, I wanted to create something as simple, but still easily recognizable. Needless to say, it proved to be a daunting task. I'm not sure there is any religion in the world which comes close to the diversity of 'otherkin' and trying to group it all together in one small symbol, proved to be nearly impossible."
For a while, items with the emblem could be purchased on teespring, but in 2003 the site's policy changed and owners would have to pay a fee to upload designs, which Kaltezar was unable to. He also couldn't find a company that would make bumper stickers of the emblem, so he resorted to making his own:

In the field, I wait for the morning When they fly, over a dream Come and call for me Boyfriend, come and play When they feel I never found the weighted bellsWe like them all, come in the morning In the sky, counting away Hope to send them now, play your winded night From the ground Reach out from the ground

I have been listening to a wide variety of music lately!
Alison's Halo - Eyedazzler 1992-1996 is very good underrated dreampop/shoegaze album that you should check out if you like rock music. They are from Arizona.  Got into glo-fi recently which was something I kinda missed out on back when it was incredibly popular in 2010. Memory Tapes - Seek Magic from 2009 is an album worth checking out. His real name is Dayve Hawk and he’s from New Jersey.  I’ve also been listening to King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s album Paper Mâché Dream Balloon. They are a psychedelic rock group from Melbourne. I like Paper Mâché Dream Balloon more than their other stuff cause it has more acoustic instruments.  There’s so much more I’ve been listening to as well. It feels nice to kinda break free from just listening to vaporwave.

“House on Fire” by Memory Tapes // Fallout / House on Fire (Out 3.31.15 via Carpark Records)
Dayve Hawk’s Memory Tapes project has always been the kind of music that accentuates the later hours. The artist’s newest single is no exception. “House on Fire” (the double A-side alongside “Fallout”) marries waves of atmospheric synths, melodic guitars, and airy, yet expressive vocals feel practically nocturnal. Not in a sleepy, or boring way - no, not at all. Just the kind of lonely lullaby that sounds special during the day, but a little extra expressive and lovely in the after hours.

"Real Love" by Memory Tapes // September (Out Now via Weird Tapes/ Bandcamp)
Looking for the perfect soundtrack for your Sunday chilldown? Something to go along with the grey, October skies? Dayve Hawk and his Memory Tapes project has you covered with his new EP, "September". The album is available for stream and purchase over at Bandcamp, but while you're hear, give the third and final track from the EP a spin. "Real Love" is a dreamy bit of ethereal electro-pop. What starts with a melancholic hang drum beat that feels like a dark and rainy evening, is immediately shifted and opened up wide when hand clap percussion and a soaring, pulsing synth line breaks into view. Soon, that initial somber wave is swallowed by a nostalgic surge of 80's inspired new wave pop. The result is a downtempo beauty that demands multiple listens and earns its space embedded in your head as ear candy, by bringing an infectious melody and swirling hypnotic beat.
