September 2023 Book Club Picks
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith: Cassandra Mortmain lives in a crumbling Suffolk castle with her penniless and eccentric family - her wild-tempered author father, her precocious younger brother, and her sensible older sister - recording their various misadventures in her diary. When two wealthy American brothers become their new landlords, Cassandra and her sister are immediately drawn to them, wondering if perhaps they've finally found an escape from their mundane lives.
Deborah Goes to Dover by Marion Chesney: Hannah Pym sets out once more for a glorious adventure, this time destined for Dover. Of course, what's an adventure with the infamous Traveling Matchmaker without matches to make? First, there's poor Abigail Cunningham, accompanied by her mother to be shuffled into a loveless marriage. Then there's tomboyish Deborah Western, encouraged to a life of lazy excess by her unruly twin brother William. Hannah isn't about to let two eligible ladies go astray, not when there are handsome eligible bachelors to pair them with!
The Only One Left by Riley Sager: Everyone knows the story of the Hope's End massacre - on a stormy, cold night in 1929, Lenora Hope systematically killed her whole family, stabbing her father and mother, and hanging her sister from the chandelier. Lenora swore she didn't do it and was never formally charged, but it had to be her. After all, she was the only one left. Fifty-four years later, Kit McDeere has been assigned to Hope's End as a caregiver after a series of strokes leaves Lenora almost totally immobilized, save her left hand. And one night, Lenora uses that left hand to plunk out a simple sentence on an old typewriter - I want to tell you everything. As Lenora tells Kit her story, it's clear that there's more to the story than anyone knows, and Kit begins to wonder how much she can trust this seemingly harmless woman.
Mary, Bloody Mary by Carolyn Meyer: Mary Tudor - Princess of Wales, only surviving child of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon - leads a life full of riches and admiration, destined to rule all of England one day. But vicious rumors begin to circulate through the court - King Henry's eyes have begun to wander, vexed that Catherine never provided him with a proper male heir. His sights land on the beautiful and ambitious Anne Boleyn, and turns his kingdom upside down to be allowed to marry her. Mary, only a child, is thrown into a dangerous world of political intrigue, spies, and love gone mad as her once-beloved father tears her life apart, strips her of her title, her home, and her mother, and declares her a bastard, unfit to inherit the throne. But Mary endures. After all, it is her destiny to rule one day.
Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte: When her father loses the family savings on a risky investment, young Agnes Grey decides to easy her family's financial burden by taking a position as a governess to a wealthy family. Ecstatic at the thought that she has finally gained control and freedom over her own life, Agnes arrives at the Bloomfield mansion armed with confidence and purpose. The cruelty with which the family treat her however, slowly but surely strips the heroine of all dignity and belief in humanity.

On Friday, the Supreme Court heard two-and-a-half hours of arguments on whether TikTok can be banned in the United States within the next week. By the end of the session, the justices appeared inclined to permit the U.S. government to force TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or cease operations in the country

âSay it Loud:â James Brown Doc Hits Small Screen Feb. 19 and 20
- âHe showed me what was possible,â Mick Jagger says
The Hardest Working Man in Show Business always knew he had off-stage work to do as well.
âIâm a black man,â James Brown says in the trailer for âSay it Loud,â which airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Feb. 19 and 20 on A&E.
âI gotta take part in my cause. I gotta take part in my fight for freedom, for equality. And take a stand where itâs needed.â
The four-hour, two-night documentary is based on previously unseen interviews and performances and features commentary from Questlove, Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, Chuck D, Mick Jagger and others. Deborah Riley Draper directs.
âHe showed me what was possible,â Jagger, who is one of the executive producers, says of Brown. âNot that I could do it, but I could dream of it.â
The title track - âSay it Loudâ - was âthe original Black Lives Matter,â Questlove says in the trailer. He and his Roots bandmate Black Thought also co-executive produced the film.
âThe life of James Brown is significant not only to understand his immense musical impact, which inspires us and other artists to this day, but also for the deep and lasting impression he has had on American culture,â they said in a statement.
âBrownâs life is a crucial and timely story of struggle, redemption and self-identity and we are honored to have the chance to share it.â

All About E
More self-torture. I donât know why I do this.
Oh wait.
Yes I do.
Itâs because the person Iâm writing about is being praised and supported when she shouldnât be. Shall we begin?
-
Elta Danneel Graul was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, and raised in the small town of Eunice. Her father, Edward, is a practicing ophthalmologist, and her mother, Deborah, is an interior designer. She was named after her great-grandmother. Legally her name is still Elta, but she professionally and personally goes by Danneel. Supposedly she was given the middle name, Danneel, after a street in New Orleans.
She moved to Los Angeles because, according to her, she knew she wanted to live in California. She moved there and lucked out with modeling. How did she luck out? Her now-ex-boyfriend, Riley Smith. His mother was a modeling agent in Chicago. She flew home with him for Thanksgiving and his mother made the phone call with the agency.
(How did Elta afford to live in Los Angeles without much work? Her parents paid her way, so she basically lived in an apartment on her own, didnât share with anyone, and got to be lazy.)
Supposedly Rileyâs mother also helped Elta with a nose job and breast implants (the first time around).
Elta liked to claim she worked and supported herself, but her beginning modeling jobs didnât pay very well. She also didnât get nearly as much work, so her parents supported her.
Elta proceeded to segue into television with the help of Riley to do auditions. She had a few guest spots on MadTV, Amanda Bynesâ What I Like About You. Then she had the audition with One Life To Live.
Because One Life To Live was filmed in New York, Elta had to move there. Again⊠her parents helped, because a starting actress on a soap did not pay well. She also had bit parts in Love House.
Eventually One Life To Live ended and Elta got guest spots on One Tree Hill, Joey, JAG, Charmed. Supposedly it was because she did well in auditions, but those rumors of her doing the casting couch with Mark Schwan persist.
After One Tree Hill, she had more guest spots on How I Met Your Mother, NCIS, and other shows.
She appeared in a few small roles in movies as well.
Supposedly, Elta is skilled in gymnastics, can sing and play piano.
Given how badly she moved as Rachel in One Tree Hill, I call false in the gymnastics claim. Weâve heard her singâshe canât sing, period. Never seen her play the piano.
There have been claims that she has a degree in beat-poetry from University of Louisiana. She is not listed as an alumni and the timing does not work. I also call false that.
Elta has tried to create a jewelry line with Limbo Jewelry to create a line called Link. Near as I can tell, that jewelry line has never sold out and has not sold well. Supposedly it was meant as a benefit for Creative Action, an Austin-based charity aimed at foster youth-development projects. It has barely raised much, only $30,000.
Elta has four tattoos. A matching tattoo with Hilarie, which says âMischiefâ, that she got at Hilarieâs wedding. A shark tattoo on her butt. An arrow on her left arm in honor of her children, and some kind of ârobe-womanâ who resembles a muse on her right arm.
She photographed for Maximâs âHot 100â list several times.
Supposedly, she is still friends with Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bevin Price.
She claimed she fell in love with Jensen during filming of Ten Inch Hero. They apparently drove back and forth, car pooled, really, to and from set and struck up a deeper conversation. Jensen once claimed he gave her a note that said âNot now, somedayâ as by that time, Elta was engaged to Riley Smith, Jensenâs friend.
Evidently, she didnât even tell Riley what happened. She just packed up her things and moved out from their shared apartment, no break-up talk, nothing. Riley is now very happy she did that, given the crappy way she broke up with him. The best thing he got out of that relationship, he once claimed, was the guitar he was gifted with.
Jensen kept mum on the relationship for a long while. He had dated Joanna Krupa at one point, and Tania Saulnier. He was rumored, at one point, to have been with LeAnn Rimes (she herself said that was false) and Jessica Simpson (never been mentioned).
His revelation that he was dating came as a surpriseâand almost no one knew who she was. When his engagement was announced on JustJared, no one knew he was dating or still dating her. The timing of said engagement had always been suspicious, given it was practically a week after Jared proposed to Genevieve.
Jensen claimed later that Elta gave him an ultimatum and that she hadnât known he was going to propose.
I believe it was because seeing Jared get engaged meant the gay rumors would focus solely on him and he didnât want to deal with that. Plus, suspected he had to âsettle downâ, so Elta was his âOkay, I guess sheâll doâ girl. Not the girl of his dreams.
She likely tailored herself to what he wanted as she knew him for years prior to that.
Not to mention a rather quick engagement to wedding (six months; most usually do a year! Perhaps because Jaredâs was set and they wanted to competeâor rather, Elta did).
Oh, Eltaâs career kept puttering along. Some attempts were made, and all failed. No, I donât think itâs because she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom either. Her career just didnât take off; sheâs a horrible actress with a childish voice that is clearly faked.
Her most recent role was a âgiftâ from Hilarie. A pity gift.
And honestly, sheâs not even a stay-at-home mom. She has nannies, a housekeepr, a gardener, possibly more help than most single parents or stay-at-home parents have. Sheâs unrelatable. Sheâs achieved nothing beyond being Jensen Acklesâ wife.
Iâd pity her, if it werenât obvious Jensen is scared of her. (Heâs said: âIâm not suicidal, Iâm getting out of her wayâ; called her âScary Spiceâ; has stated more than once that he defers to her because he has to; said their marriage works better when theyâre apart.)

Are there any other astrology books besides the ones you mention in your master list that you would recommend to read?
Oh, I should make a list, thank you for asking. I'll first give you these few ones that I use the most, but I'll try to update it regularly, I have many more recommendations than this. If anyone thinks it's hard to find a good version of any of these you can talk to me through chat and I can send you a link ;)
Beginner's books:
On the heavenly spheres/Tratado das Esferas by Helena Avelar and Luis Ribeiro is the ultimate beginner book, that's used as main bibliography in my school, SaturnĂĄlia. It covers a bit of everything, except predictive techniques. The authors are also historians who have great academic research on astrology. You should definitely take a look at the Astra Project website and follow their youtube channel. In fact, I met Luis Ribeiro two weeks ago at a conference at my university (coincidentally my university is the only one in Brazil that has a research group that brings together researchers in astrology, called Academia Celeste), where he gave a mini-course and I was impressed above all by his rare way of valuing astrology as an object of academic research, emphasizing the history of its techniques as well, and the ease with which he can teach about its epistemological debates and fundamentals etc.
Deborah Houlding's Houses: Temples of the sky is the best book on the subject of houses. I believe you have to go to a book that's specific about houses, because the topic really deserves the depth and it's probably the most important thing to understand in astrology.
Demetra George's Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice volumes I and II.
Predictive techniques:
The Seven Stars Astrology blog was actually my first source on this subject, it's easy but very well researched and it was very important for me to find. Anthony does a pretty good job at gathering the hellenistic sources and explaining what's important to understand about them, it's the best to have someone to hold your hand through things before you dive into the primary sources.
AstrologĂa HermĂ©tica by Eduardo Gramaglia. I'm not sure if there's an english translation of this one, it's one of the best introductory books too, complete and concise.
Astrologia Gallica book 23 by Jean-Baptiste Morin, which is about Revolutions. I always go back to chapter 18 as recommended by my teachers, where he gives universal rules for solar returns that you can adopt (or not).
FirdĂŁriĂŁ: Periods of Life - Aswin Subramanyan. I've been getting into the Firdaria system just recently and this is a great book for it. Firdaria is one of those things that easily remind you of the deeply syncretic history of Astrology, with strong Hindu, Persian and Hellenistic influences.
Ancient sources (from I to IV AD):
Marcus Manilius' Astronomica is just beautiful on a lot of points, you should go to it for the poetry, just to have the delight. And his poetry also gives the best and concise insights on the fixed stars and the signs.
Dorotheus of Sidon's Carmen Astrologicum is probably the first most technical book of the ancients that you should go to. It's the most influential and easiest to find. Dorotheus was a contemporary of Manilius, but the versions we have of his book are influenced by later Arabic translations.
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos. Even though astrologers are right to be ingrates to daddy Ptolemy we should still read him.
Vettius Valens' Anthologies is everybody's favorite hellenistic source. I used to have a hard time with getting through this book, even though I love Valens' perspectives, because the versions of it online weren't that great, but now I found out that someone took Mark T. Riley translation that he generously put on his website and formated it and made the nicest pdf ever. There's just some layout errors in some of the example charts, but it's amazing.
Firmicus Maternus' Mathesis is a bummer of a book, his delineations are super dramatic, but it's great to read from the beginning to understand Firmicus' logic and you'll start getting how he thinks and predicting what he's going to say next, which then means you learned something.
On Mundane Astrology:
The Meio do CĂ©u newsletter is my first and main source on mundane astrology. The writer Ăsis is one of my teachers. I participate in her workshops, where we contribute collectively to the predictions and learn a lot. It's in portuguese, but it's pretty understandable with the translation option on your browser. It's free with special editions for paying subscribers. I recommend starting with edition 72.
Bonatti on Mundane Astrology, by Benjamin Dykes. This is one of our favorite sources with Ăsis on the workshops.
Tetrabiblos book 2, Ptolemy.
On philosophy, history, important topics etc:
The Daimon in Hellenistic Astrology: Origins and Influence, by Dorian Greenbaum. This is one of my favorites and I can't recommend it enough, because very few astrologers take much time to understand before talking about the daimon. And it's impossible for you to avoid the daimon in your practice, because it's very ingrained in Hellenistic astrology.
On Horary:
William Lilly's Christian Astrology. There's a reason we all go back to him, it's the fact that is such a didactical book, you can always use it as an instruction manual basically. He gives instructions on how to approach any kind of question and gives so many examples, it's a hit.
On the fixed stars:
The Constellations of Words website is still the easiest source for learning about fixed stars, but here are their most cited books:
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos book I chapter 9-11, of course, because he's the earliest source and it's important to see the difference between how the hellenistics called and understood the fixed stars and how things changed after the persians.
Vivian E. Robson's The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology (XX AD) is a must have. It's another one that's strictly astrological and plus gives a method on how to interpret fixed stars, though you don't need to follow it necessarily.
Marcus Manilius' Astronomica book 5. I always make sure to read attentively Manilius' poetry about the constellation I'm researching. It's always incredibly useful, never disappointing.
William Tyler Olcott's Star Lore: Myths, Legends and Facts (XIX AD). This is a great one to get a lot of the different stories and histories of the stars. It really helps you to understand the constellations in depth.

Helena is completely incapable of conceiving a child, and sheâs long come to accept that. She doesnât want to bring a child into this world and possibly leave them with a permanent mutation because of her infection- even if she could conceive, she knows she shouldnât.
She is, however, more then happy to potentially adopt a child once theres a bit more stability, and sheâs finally opted to settle down and retire. Being an orphan herself and raising Deborah on her own, its the only logical step, in her eyes.
Right now sheâs taking care of Riley- a mutant Tyrant teenager they picked up in Atlanta- until Hunnigan can find a good place for her to live on her own where sheâll be protected.
