(1/2) Shown here: a frame with decorative elements being built in our LIC shop. This specific profile style – with an inner panel in the middle and decorative elements to either side of the panel -- is known to us as the Havemeyer style. This is because Louisine Havemeyer (1855-1929), an early feminist, suffragist, and art collector, used variations of this frame shape for many of the impressionist paintings she collected. To create the frame, composition moulding is added to the milled maple frame, before bole (clay) is applied and the frame is gilded. Compo moulding, as it's called, is made from chalk, linseed oil, and rabbit skin glue which is then made into a dough, and pressed into form.
