Moonchildren is one of a few aliases that have been used by Chris Gray, a house music veteran who’s been releasing tunes for a quarter century now. Originally from Mississippi, Gray moved to Chicago after becoming infatuated with the city’s underground house music craze and culture. In 1990, he started the Deep House Projekt, an initiative that sought to trace house music’s history and its roots. In 1995, his first productions were released on wax, and by 1999, he launched his own record label, Deep4Life, which served as an engine for his own releases and prided itself on providing lesser-known artists a platform, too.

In 2000, under his Moonchildren moniker, Gray released the Moonchildren EP, which leads with a great deep house track called “Ran Away.” That same year, the song was included on a mix by Sweden’s Jesper Dahlbäck called Stockholm Mix Sessions 2, released by Canadian dance label, Turbo Recordings.

“Ran Away” is that creamy, dreamy, wavy brand of deep house; that type of shit that you can just close your eyes to and float on. A steady groove with soft, bunny-hill peaks, the track’s leads prove to be just as potent as the backbeat that undergirds them. Hypnotically hushed vocals courtesy of a singer named Kory, whose only credits appear to be from Gray releases, alternate with super rich and intimately jazzy piano melodies, as a 4/4 kick drum, scratchy, clapping hi-hats, and spinning bits of distortion are placed in an aquatic bed of deep and tranquil synths that manage to hold the whole track up.

Early 2000s daze-inducing, lose-yourself deep house from this great, veteran Windy City talent.

Nate De Yonker - “Your Approval” Deep South Experience 2000 Deep House / IDM

When Chicago deep house extraordinaire Chris Gray launched his own record label, he had two things in mind: creating an outlet to release his own music and doing his best to give a platform to lesser-known talents. Disillusioned by the fact that money all too often corrupts art, he sought to provide a safe space for artists to create house music that strayed off the beaten path. The result was Deep4Life, a label that lasted somewhere around 15 years.

In 2000, Deep4Life released a compilation called Deep South Experience. Its goal was to highlight unconventional deep house tunes made by virtually unknown artists. One of those artists was Nate de Yonker. According to the Deep4Life website, de Yonker is "a Michigan yankee now soaking up the hot sun in the deep south." That's it. That's all we know about him.

De Yonker's only song is "Your Approval," and it's quite weird. Mixing IDM sounds with a sparse house backbeat, he answers the question of "what if you had a music box that was also a sentient alcoholic?" It's a song that manages to simultaneously sound both mechanical and sloppy at the same time; like the errant ways of man are trapped inside and are trying to bust loose from their rigid framework. The awkwardly clashing chime melodies naturally give the song its music box quality and de Yonker underlies them with a layer of softer, mellower synths to complicate the sound even further. Shards of distorted and crunchy static plus a simple 4/4 kick drum provide the percussion.

Probably one of the strangest house tracks ever recorded. Kudos to Nate de Yonker for pulling it off.
