Từ kẻ lừa đảo siêu hạng trở thành cánh tay đắc lực của FBI

Họ là những con người từng một thời lầm lỡ với tội ác tưởng chừng khó lòng tha thứ và đã phải trá giá bằng những tháng ngày trừng phạt trong tù. Sống ở ranh giới mong manh giữa cái thiện và cái ác, họ vẫn có thể tìm được chút ánh sáng còn sót lại của lương tri để rồi khát khao làm lại cuộc đời tiếp tục trỗi dậy. Loạt bài “Con đường hoàn lương của những tội phạm khét tiếng” sẽ phần nào lột tả những câu chuyện đầy nỗi đau nhưng cũng không ít niềm hạnh phúc ấy.

Từ một luật sư, Kenneth Andrew Walton trở thành tội phạm lừa đảo sau đó lại là chuyên gia phòng chống lừa đảo của FBI.

Cách đây 11 năm, nhìn chằm chằm vào một bức tranh trừu tượng đầy màu sắc mà mình đã mua với giá 8USD, Kenneth Walton đã phải đấu tranh tư tưởng mất một lúc trước khi lấy một chiếc bút vẽ và cẩn thận thêm dòng chữ "RD52" vào góc dưới cùng bên phải bức tranh. RD là tên viết tắt của Richard Diebenkorn, một họa sĩ trừu tượng nổi tiếng thế kỷ 20.

Sau đó, anh đưa nó lên trang mua bán điện tử eBay. Trong vài ngày, bức tranh Diebenkorn giả mạo được bán với giá lên tới 100.000 USD. Vài tuần sau đó, các nhân viên Cục điều tra Liên bang Mỹ FBI đã gõ cửa nhà anh và Walton trở thành kẻ tội phạm lừa đảo siêu đẳng nhất trong lịch sử hình Tập đoàn eBay.

Từ luật sư trở thành tội phạm

Kenneth Andrew Walton sinh ngày 23/11/1967 tại thành phố Sacramento, bang California của Mỹ trong một gia đình có 3 đời hành nghề luật sư. Walton từng có hai năm phục vụ trong quân đội Mỹ trước khi theo học ngành Luật tại Đại học California.

Ở tuổi 30, Walton có một công việc đầy hứa hẹn với tư cách là luật sư của một công ty luật lớn ở Sacramento. Ngày ngày, anh dành thời gian nhìn từ cửa sổ văn phòng nằm trên tầng 28 của mình và mơ ước về một tương lai đầy sáng sủa với mức lương lúc đó được xếp vào hàng khá cao, thậm chí nếu may mắn còn trở thành chưởng lý của thành phố.

Nhưng tất cả đã thay đổi và buộc cuộc đời Walton rẽ theo hướng hoàn toàn không ngờ tới vào một ngày  năm 1998, khi anh gặp lại Ken Fetterman, một đồng đội trong đơn vị khi cả hai còn tại ngũ.

Sau vài năm không gặp mà Fetterman đã trở nên rất giàu có, Walton liền tìm hiểu và biết rằng, Fetterman là một kẻ chuyên lừa đảo bán tranh nghệ thuật giả và thu được số lợi nhuận bất chính khổng lồ.

Fetterman liền rủ Walton tham gia với lời khẳng định rằng chỉ cần lừa đảo trót lọt một vụ, Walton sẽ có thu nhập tương đương một năm tiền lương luật sư.

Walton đã suy nghĩ về lời đề nghị này rất nhiều. Nhưng lòng tham đã chiến thắng tất cả, Walton quyết định hành nghề lừa đảo bán tranh giả trên mạng cùng với Fetterman.

Thủ đoạn của Fetterman và Walton là tìm mua những bức tranh sao chép cũ hoặc thuê họa sĩ sao chép một số các bức tranh của nhiều họa sĩ đương đại người Mỹ mà giá bán một bức tranh chỉ dao động ở mức vài trăm ngàn USD.

Sau khi đã có tranh trong tay, Fetterman và Walton tìm hiểu những thông tin liên quan đến tác giả và dấu ấn riêng biệt của từng người để lại trên tranh như chữ ký, ký họa nhỏ... qua các tài liệu được lưu giữ tại các bảo tàng hay thư viện.

Để làm tăng giá trị của món hàng rao bán, Fetterman và Walton lập nhiều tên giả tham gia đấu giá tranh. Cả tin, nhiều người quyết định mua tranh và bị sập bẫy. Chỉ từ cuối năm 1998 đến cuối năm 2000, Fetterman và Walton đã thực hiện trót lọt hàng chục vụ bán tranh nghệ thuật giả trên mạng eBay và thu được hàng triệu USD.

Tuy nhiên, “đi đêm lắm có ngày gặp ma”, tháng 4/2001, FBI bắt giữ cả hai sau vụ tranh giả Richard Diebenkorn. 

Cánh tay đắc lực của FBI

Vào tháng 3/2002, sau khi được trả tự do, Walton quyết định thành lập Công ty Hammer Tap chuyên tư vấn cho các khách hàng hay mua sắm trên mạng eBay cách phòng chống các thủ đoạn lừa đảo mua bán trên mạng.

Đáng kể nhất là việc Công ty Hammer Tap cho ra đời phần mềm chống lừa đảo có tên gọi DeepAnalysis. Phần mềm DeepAnalysis sẽ tổng hợp và thiết lập ngân hàng dữ liệu về  tất cả các thông tin liên quan đến việc làm giả các tác phẩm nghệ thuật nhằm giúp các nhân viên quản lý của eBay và cả khách hàng phân biệt được thật và giả của các sản phẩm rao bán.

Phần mềm này không chỉ giúp eBay phát hiện nguồn gốc của hàng giả mà còn giúp FBI bắt giữ những kẻ lừa đảo rao bán hàng trên mạng. Nhờ sự hỗ trợ của phần mềm DeepAnalysis và nghiệp vụ của Walton mà FBI đã phá thành công nhiều vụ án lừa đảo tưởng chừng đi vào ngõ cụt.

Vào tháng 6/2005, Walton được Tập đoàn eBay mời làm cố vấn an ninh cho mạng bán hàng của mình. Cũng trong năm này, Walton còn được FBI mời làm chuyên viên chống lừa đảo trên mạng.
