Introduction to Kingdoms AU - a Hermitcraft / Life Series Fantasy AU
This idea has been rotating in my brain for several days now and I thought I should actually explain some bits about the lore and such! All posts about this AU are tagged #kingdoms au on my blog :)

The Setting
A mid-high fantasy world with limited technology
Magic users (Mages) are commonplace and there are specialised universities for different kinds of magic. You can learn magic or be born knowing how to use it (Sorcerer)
Hybrids, demons, and humans co-exist
There are three main kingdoms which trade with each other but have shaky alliances
Kingdoms and Characters
The Ocean Kingdom
An underwater kingdom run by a king and queen, taking up much of the local ocean space
Home to mostly Mermaids and Sirens (fish and sealife hybrids)
The king and queen's son is Scott (a lionfish hybrid)
The king and queen enjoy tradition and keep their palace beautiful while the citizens deal with poor infrastructure that the king and queen don't want to change
The king and queen are very stuck-up and don't trust the other kingdoms despite trading with them
Mermaids and Sirens can shift into having legs rather than tails, and can breathe both in and out of water, but may be uncomfortable out of water for too long
Other residents: Lizzie (Axolotl hybrid), Joel (human, built an underwater breathing suit)
The Red Kingdom
A more traditional kingdom with a walled city and a castle in the centre
The only kingdom with guarded borders
Landscape is agricultural, surrounded by snowy mountains
Home to the best universities for technological magic, a type of magic which relies on mechanics to work and results in lots of new inventions
Controlled by Ren, the Red King, who is the first hybrid (Weredog) to become king there
Ren has a royal council to advise and help him run the kingdom, made up of great minds he scouts from universities and such
Ren is paranoid about losing the throne and therefore places a lot of focus on guarding the kingdom and catching criminals
He cares about his citizens, giving basic necessities to everyone at his own cost
Most inter-kingdom meetings are held here as it lies between Roost and The Ocean Kingdom
Other residents: Martyn (coral siren, royal council defence specialist), Doc (goat hybrid & demon, technological mage, former university professor, and royal council technology specialist), BigB (human, mind mage, royal council negotiator / kingdom ambassador)
Roost
A kingdom located in the canopies of a large forest, with wooden houses and rope bridges
Home to many Avian and Insectoid hybrids, but also some humans
Used to be ruled by a monarchy, but there was a Civil War which resulted in a democratic system being put in place
The elected government is treated the same as everyone else, and currently runs Roost as a commune, with everyone helping to gather resources and build the society up
The citizens have no need for money, but money from trades is shared just in case a citizen wants to travel
Exports a lot of fruit, nuts, wood products, clothes and woven products
Pearl (lunar moth hybrid, astrologist and animage) is a member of the government, and has a dog familiar, Tilly, who she talks to using her magic
Pearl's brother-figure, Grian (Scarlet Macaw hybrid) went missing five years ago, and she hasn't really gotten over it
Her other brother-figure, Jimmy (Canary hybrid) helps deliver exports to other kingdoms, as he used to be a traveller and is flightless, meaning he enjoys the journey- and also enjoys catching up with Scott at the Ocean Kingdom
Pearl only wears red since Grian's disappearance and is very quick to anger, holding a grudge against the other kingdoms for not helping her search efforts
Thieves Haven
A darker forest located in No Man's Land, home to demons, thieves, and the black market
Residents speak a secret code language and have a duty not to hurt each other unless necessary
Residents include: Cleo (gorgon demon, mercenary), Bdubs (human, life and soul mage), Etho (demon, mercenary), Tango (demon), Impulse (demon, thief), Skizz (human, thief)
No Man's Land
The space between kingdoms, dotted with trade routes, taverns, and guard stops
Some settlements and lone houses can be found here
Residents include: Scar (Sorcerer, necromancer, mythologised outlaw), Mumbo (human, former professor of technological magic, also an alchemist, now an outlaw of the Red Kingdom)

NSA Doval visits White House, discusses Indo-US defence ties
Doval was on a two-day visit to Washington and interacted with policymakers in the US govt and Congress on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

WASHINGTON: The discussions held during the visit of National Security Advisor Ajit K Doval form the basis for intensifying India-US cooperation in cutting-edge sectors and are truly reflective of the maturity of a comprehensive and global strategic partnership, the Indian embassy here has said.
Doval led a high-powered delegation to the US that included five secretary-level officials and members of the Indian corporate sector from the hi-tech area for the launch of the India-US initiative on critical and emerging technologies at the White House here along with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan.
"The discussions during this visit form the basis for intensifying India-US cooperation in cutting-edge sectors and are truly reflective of the maturity of the India-US comprehensive, global strategic partnership," the embassy said in a statement.
During the visit from January 30 to February 1, National Security Advisor Doval interacted with US policymakers and stakeholders across the Government, Congress, business, academic and research communities on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Apart from his meeting with Sullivan, Doval also met Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, Acting Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, key Senators and industry leaders.
He is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Anthony Blinken later during the visit.
Doval and Sullivan co-chaired the inaugural iCET meeting at the White House on Tuesday, translating into action the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joseph Biden during their meeting in Tokyo in May 2022.
"iCET aims to position the two countries as trusted technology partners by building technology value chains and supporting the co-development and co-production of items. It also aims to address regulatory restrictions, export controls and mobility barriers through a standing mechanism," the embassy said.
During the meeting, the US side also assured support to ease export barriers to India in a few critical areas, including through efforts towards legislative changes.
Emphasis was placed on strengthening linkages between the startup ecosystems and building innovation bridges in key sectors between the two countries, through expos, hackathons and pitching sessions, according to the statement.
Doval was joined at the launch by the Ambassador of India to the United States, Principal Scientific Advisor, Department of Telecommunications Secretary, ISRO Chairman, Scientific Advisor to the Defense Minister, DRDO Director General, and other senior officials from the National Security Council Secretariat and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
On the US side, the administrator of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), director of the National Science Foundation, and deputy national security advisor, amongst others participated.
Recognising the importance of quantum technologies, both sides established a quantum coordination mechanism with participation from industry and academia.
In the field of semiconductors, the US supported the development of a fabrication ecosystem in India and encouraged joint ventures and partnerships for mature technology nodes and advanced packaging.
During the meeting, the embassy said, it was agreed to constitute a task force involving India's Semiconductor Mission, India Electronics Semiconductor Association (IESA) and the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) to develop a "readiness assessment" to identify near-term opportunities and facilitate longer-term development of semiconductor ecosystems.
In the field of defence manufacturing, the two sides agreed to focus on the joint production of key items of mutual interest.
The US committed to an expeditious review of the license application submitted by General Electric to produce jet engines in India for the indigenously manufactured Light Combat Aircraft. A new Innovation Bridge will be created to connect defence startups on both sides, it said.
"In the field of space, there was an appreciation of the opportunities offered by the opening up of India's space sector and the contribution of India's space tech companies in the US. It was agreed that ISRO would work with NASA on human space flight opportunities, NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) project, and STEM talent exchanges," according to the statement.
"In next-generation telecommunications, given India's cost-competitiveness and scale, both sides agreed to launch a public-private dialogue covering 5G/6G and ORAN using trusted sources," it said.
During the iCET launch, a new implementation arrangement between the Department of Science and Technology of India and the National Science Foundation of the US was signed by the ambassador and NSF Director. This will expand joint research in CET, it said.
On January 30, 2023, an iCET Roundtable with the US and Indian industry at the US Chamber of Commerce was held. It provided an opportunity for sharing ideas for bolstering high-technology partnerships between government, industry and academia.
India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Sandhu hosted a reception for NSA at India House during which US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, NSA Jake Sullivan, Acting Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, several high officials from the US Administration, and CEOs of advanced technology companies and funds, heads of leading US universities were present.

Technology transfer - lesson from Sony's success
Sony is not as well-known as Apple to the youths of the 21st century, but Sony used to be recognised as innovation wonder for the most part of the 2nd half of the 20th century. In war-devastated Japan, Sony was born just after the World War II. Although Japan is not known to be the inventor of basic technology, Sony prospered in creating innovation successes stories out of emerging technology cores. Sony single-handedly changed the image of 'Made in Japan' from cheap imitation to high quality innovation.
In its journey to creating a remarkable success story, Sony relied on technology transfer through licensing from American companies. But, did Sony triumph just by replicating licensed technology? How did Sony succeed to cause disruption to American iconic innovation companies like RCA or Kodak by licensing technology from America? How did Sony overcome the limitation of distance and lack of close cooperation with inventors to outperform American firms in American market? It appears that Sony's journey of creating the astonishingly wining story out of licensed technology has many valuable lessons for us.      
Upon giving up the war-time research job with Imperial Navy, in 1945, Masaru Ibuka founded a radio repair shop in the bombed Shirokiya Department Store in Tokyo. Just after one year, Akio Morita, a fellow wartime researcher, chose to join him. With funding from Morita's father, the duo co-founded Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, which became known as Sony Corporation in 1958. Unlike other radio repair men, both of them had sound university education in Science, Physics and Mathematics. Due to their background in science education and wartime research, they became intrigued with the news of the Nobel Prize winning invention of Transistor at the Bell laboratories in the USA in 1947. Unlike others, they envisioned the emergence of a new wave of innovation in electronics out of transistor. It's worth mentioning that this transistor technology has been the underlying technology core driving the information and communication technology age. In 1954, under the leadership of Masaru Ibuka, Sony secured the licence of production and further improvement of transistor technology from Bell Labs. Due to weak financial position of Sony and Japan as a whole, Sony had to take special permission to pay $50,000 licensing fees.
Like many other great technologies, transistor in those early days was in primitive form--bulky, noisy, and highly fragile--and also expensive to manufacture. Signal amplified by transistor used to be of very low power and highly noisy. What to innovate out of it was a great challenge for Mr. Morita and Mr. Ibuka. In those days, the military used to be the major customer for electronics. But, due to the post-war settlement condition, Sony being a Japanese company was not allowed to pursue innovation for the purpose of defence market, leaving consumer electronics as the only option. Instead of pursuing the mission of imitating mainstream consumer electronic products like large-sized radio or TV produced by American companies like RCA or GE, Sony preferred to pursue disruptive innovation. As opposed to targeting existing family customers of RCA or GE, Sony embarked on innovating pocket radio out of the licensed transistor technology targeting the American college students. These college students found Sony's radio a better alternative to cabinet top vacuumed tube-based ones producing high quality sound, as they were portable for enjoying music in neighbourhood hangouts.  Sony, however, did not stop with the success of producing and selling pocket radios. It embarked on the journey of improving the underlying transistor technology, making the radio better as well as cheaper. Among several others, Leo Esaki joined Sony's R&D team for pursuing relentless journey of perfecting the transistor technology, licensed from Bell.
In course of time, Sony's transistor radio became better alternative to the incumbent vacuumed tube-based radios, both in quality and cost. Sony also leveraged this technology advancement to succeed in TVs, audio as well as video recorders, and also in innovating Walkman. The journey of perfecting licensed technology led to Sony's success of causing disruption to radio as well as TV making business of American giants like RCA, and GE. Moreover, scientific discoveries driving technology progress made in the relentless journey of refinement of transistor for making radios and TVs better as well as cheaper also brought Nobel Prize to Sony's R&D team member Leo Esaka in 1973.
There is another such example in Sony's history. In 1960s, Sony's management was observing the progress of electronic image sensor technology leading to the invention of charge coupled device (CCD). Like in the past, Sony licensed electronic image sensor technology producing 8x8 noisy images from Bell laboratory in 1970. Sony kept refining it over a period of 15 years leading to the innovation of portable video camera - camcorder. This innovation journey caused disruption to the film-based imaging industry, making American icon Kodak bankrupt. Here are some important lessons from Sony's such triumphs from technology transfer.
VISION OF SEEING THROUGH THE FOG: Like transistor and CCD, every technology having high underlying potential invariably begins the journey in primitive form, showing faint possibility. Despite having disruptive potential, often such technologies at the initial stage do not support innovations causing substitution effect to incumbent ones. As a result, managers of incumbent firms having successful innovation around previous technology core faces innovation dilemma-as observed by Prof. Clayton Christenson. Business acumen complemented with deep science and technology insights often becomes indispensable requirement to succeed to spot and nurture such potential. Unlike managers of American firms like RCA or Kodak, Sony's two founders had this invaluable capacity.
TECHNOLOGY ASSIMILATION AND REFINEMENT: Replication of licensed technology alone does not support the creation of successes. It's about the capacity of technology recipient for assimilation and continued refinement, which is vital to create the success out of transferred technology. Due to the absence of this capability, technology-transfer-led industrial development agenda of developing countries invariably failed in the past, and runs the risk of facing similar propect in the future.
PRODUCT FOCUS: Although one of the Sony's R&D team members, Leo Esaki, won Nobel Prize for the work of advancing transistor technology, Sony did not sponsor that research for the sake of scientific discovery and technology invention to be followed by commercial innovations. Rather, the reality was other way around. To pursue the mission of offering better radio at lower cost, Sony was pursuing relentless journey of transistor technology refinement, out of scientific discoveries leading to technology inventions and innovation of better performing, less costly transistor.
PURSUING WELL-CRAFTED STRATEGY: Mr. Murita and Mr. Ibuka also pursued a smart strategy, which has been researched and theorised by Prof. Clayton as the theory of Disruptive innovation. In the absence of this strategy, it would have been impossible for Sony to create such success out of licensed technology, causing even disruption to the iconic firms of the technology providing countries.
Sony's success from technology transfer appears to offer highly valuable lessons to interpret the past failures of many developing countries' initiatives in developing industrial economy-either for import substitution and/or export. Lesson should be drawn in crafting the journey of acquiring technology competence, often through licensing, in building sustainable as well as innovation-centric industrial economy.

MISSION: The mission was set up to provide the country with supercomputing infrastructure to meet the increasing computational demands of academia, researchers, MSMEs, and startups by creating the capability design, manufacturing, of supercomputers indigenously in India. COORDINATORS: National Super Computing Mission is steered jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) and implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. AIM: The target of the mission was set to establish a network of supercomputers ranging from a few Tera Flops (TF) to Hundreds of Tera Flops (TF) and three systems with greater than or equal to 3 Peta Flops (PF) in academic and research institutions of National importance across the country by 2022. FEATURES This network of Supercomputers envisaging a total of 15-20 PF  was approved in 2015 and was later revised to a total of 45 PF (45000 TFs), a jump of 6 times more compute power within the same cost and capable of solving large and complex computational problems. First supercomputer assembled indigenously, called Param Shivay, was installed in IIT (BHU) and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Similar systems Param Shakti and Param Brahma were installed at IIT-Kharagpur and IISER, Pune. They are equipped with applications from domains like Weather and Climate, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bioinformatics, and Material science.

  11 new systems are likely to be set up in different IITs, NITs, National Labs, and IISERs across India by December this year, which will have many sub-systems manufactured and microprocessors designed in India which will bring in a cumulative capacity of 10.4 petaflops. Geared to provide Supercomputing facility to about 60-70 institutions Nation-wide and more than thousands of active Researchers, Academicians, and so on, NSM has gathered momentum and is moving fast not only towards creating a computer infrastructure for the country but also to build capacity of the country to develop the next generation of supercomputer experts.       IASbhai WINDUP:  Spreading out the reach to the North-East region of the country, 8 systems with a total Compute Power of 16 PF are being commissioned. 5 indigenously designed systems with three 3 PF computing power will be installed at IIT-Mumbai, IIT-Chennai and Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) at Delhi with NKN as its backbone. It also includes an indigenously build 20 PF system at C-DAC, Pune, and a 100 PF Artificial Intelligence supercomputing system. On a song: A Yakshagana performance in progress at Jeppu in Mangaluru on Monday. Yakshagana is one of the most popular folk theatre forms of Karnataka. It is noted for its music, colourful costumes, vigorous dance movements, subtle expressions and extempore dialogues. Yakshagana has two main variations, each of which has many variations: Moodalapaya (the eastern form which is popular in north Karnataka) and Paduvalapaya (western style also known as coastal Yakshagana). Of the two, the coastal Yakshagana is more popular for the great sophistication that it has achieved over the years by the efforts of artistes, thinkers and researchers. Paduvalapaya is performed in three coastal districts of Karnataka‒Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.  TRADITIONAL STAGE  Regardless of where the Yakshagana is performed, at the back of the stage there is always a raised bench or table on which two persons (bhagavata or the playback singer and maddalegara, the artist who plays the percussion instrument maddale) can sit. In a meeting among judges, lawyers and the government through the Solicitor General held on Monday, it was decided that only extremely urgent cases would be taken up by a Bench(es) through a video app. The link would lapse automatically by default shortly after the hearing. If the case is not listed for hearing via videoconferencing, the advocate-on-record concerned would be provided with a telephone number by the registry. The lawyer is free to call the judge between 10.30 and 11 a.m. the following day and directly press his case for urgent hearing. The lawyer concerned would be mailed a video link and he or she can use it to present his case via videoconferencing at an allotted time. ARTICLE 142: The Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde used its extraordinary powers under Article 142 to lift the limitation period for all cases across tribunals and courts in the country until further notice. A researcher working on a vaccine against COVID-19 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Some of the medications are already used to treat other diseases, and repurposing them to treat COVID-19 may be faster than trying to invent a new anti-viral from scratch. To come up with the list, hundreds of researchers embarked on an unusual study of the genes of the coronavirus, also called SARS-CoV-2. To infect a lung cell, the virus must insert its genes, co-opting the cell’s own genetic machinery. The cell begins to produce viral proteins, which are used to produce millions of new viruses. Each of those viral proteins must be able to latch onto the necessary human proteins for the process to work. FINDING: In the new study, the scientists investigated 26 of the virus’s 29 genes, which direct production of the viral proteins. Researchers found 332 human proteins targeted by the virus. Some viral proteins seemed to target just one human protein; other viral proteins are capable of targeting a dozen human cellular proteins. Researchers sought drugs that also latch onto the human proteins that the virus seems to need to enter and replicate in human cells. Intriguingly, some of the possible treatments are drugs used to attack parasites. And the list includes antibiotics that kill bacteria by gumming up the cellular machinery they use to build proteins. But some of those drugs also attach to human proteins. The new study raises the possibility that this side effect might turn out to be an anti-viral treatment. One drug on the list: CHLOROQUINE: kills the single-celled parasite that causes malaria. Scientists have long known that it can also attach to a human cellular protein called the sigma-1 receptor. In other words, when the House is suspended without naming a day for reassembly, it is known as adjournment sine die. The ultimate authority of adjournment sine die lies with the presiding officer of the House(Speaker).
