Velvet Underground were not commercially successful but are now regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. Brian Eno said that everyone who heard the first VU album wanted to start a band. Reed had a deadpan voice that, for me, required forgiveness as singers go (though he did step up on occasion, particularly when he sung with The Blind Boys on THE RAVEN album). Eventually I connected with his noir fiction, transgressive “eyewitness reporting” lyrics and songcraft. He neither approved or disapproved of the subjects he sang about and, in the end, he just wanted to write catchy rock’n’roll. Over the years I’ve performed at least 6 Reed/VU songs—recording 2: “What Goes On” and “Sunday Morning,” on which I was joined by members of The Badlees (who did a splendid job in one afternoon). Reed himself commended our cover and promoted it on his website in the mid-90s. HB and RIP Lou.

TOP FAVORITE AVIATION MOVIES

1. "Airport" (1970) - Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin starred in this adaptation of Arthur Hailey's 1968 novel about the discovery of a bomber aboard a Chicago-to-Rome flight. George Seaton directed.

2. "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965) - Ken Annakin wrote and directed this all-star comedy about a 1910 air race from London to Paris. Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles and James Fox starred.

3. "Apollo 13 (1995) - Ron Howard directed this adaptation of "Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13", Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger's 1994 book about NASA's ill-fated fifth mission to the moon. Tom Hanks, Gary Sinese and Kathleen Quinlan starred.

4. "The Rocketeer" (1991) - Bill Campbell starred in this adaptation of Dave Steven's comic book about a stunt pilot-turned-costumed hero battling Nazi agents in 1938 Los Angeles. Directed by Joe Johnston, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton and Jennifer Connelly co-starred.

5. "The Right Stuff" (1983) - Philip Kaufman directed this adaptation of Tom Wolfe's 1979 book about Project Mercury, NASA's first program of test pilots-turned-astronauts. Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward and Scott Glenn starred.

6. "The Aviator" (2004) - Martin Scorsese directed this adaptation of "Howard Hughes: The Secret Life", the 1993 book about Howard Hughes' life as an aviator and film producer between 1927 and 1947. Leonardo DiCaprio starred.

7. "Death in the Clouds" (1992) - David Suchet starred as Hercule Poirot in this television adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1935 novel. Stephen Whittaker directed.

8. "Pearl Harbor" (2001) - Michael Bay directed this fictionalized account of the December 1941 attack upon the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. The movie starred Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Harnett.

There are some curiously "meta" moments in The Bigamist: At one point, Eve Graham (Joan Fontaine) says that the man who is helping arrange their adoption of a child reminds her of Santa Claus. We smile because the man is being played by Edmund Gwenn, who won an Oscar as Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street (George Seaton, 1947). And just in case we missed it, a little later in the film we are on a bus touring the homes of the stars in Beverly Hills and the driver announces that the house they're passing is the residence of "a little man who was Santa Claus to the whole world -- Edmund Gwenn." But then there's something meta about the whole movie: It was produced and its screenplay written by Collier Young, who was married to Fontaine after divorcing the film's other major female star, as well as its director, Ida Lupino. I suppose if you don't believe in divorce you might say that Young is the bigamist of the film's title. But that, of course, is Harry Graham, played by Edmond O'Brien, a character actor who never failed to give a subtle and insightful performance when it was called for. Here he's a weak man, the supposed head of the Graham household, who has found himself taking a back seat in the business to his wife, Eve, whom he refers to at one point as "a career woman" -- a pejorative of sorts in the 1950s. The thing of it is, when we see Eve she's always pleasant and loving -- we sense that she doesn't want to be emasculating Harry, but she's got too much intelligence not to do so. While he's on the road for their company, he gets more and more depressed about playing second fiddle to his wife, so he takes up with Phyllis Martin (Lupino), who's a little depressed herself about her failure to make her mark in the world. One thing leads to another and they get married because she's pregnant. Harry is really a nice guy at heart, but somehow he can't help himself. Finally, he spills the beans to Mr. Jordan (Gwenn), who stumbles onto Harry's double life while investigating the Grahams' fitness to adopt a child. Jordan speaks for the viewer when he says, "I can't figure out my feelings toward you. I despise you and I pity you. I don't even want to shake your hand, and yet I almost wish you luck." There are no villains to be found in The Bigamist, only flawed people getting themselves ensnared in situations they can't resolve. Fortunately, the film doesn't resolve things for us either. It ends with Harry in court where he receives a scolding from the judge, who says he will pronounce sentence a week later. Wisely, the film leaves it up to us to deliver that sentence.

Winners announced for the 2019 Eisner Awards

The winners were announced last night for the 2019 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.

Tom King and Mitch Gerads, partners on the Mister Miracle series from DC, took home five awards between them. John Allison’s Giant Days and The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang also took home multiple awards.

The Eisner Awards also inducted 10 people into the Hall of Fame last night: the judges chose Jim Aparo, June Tarpé Mills, Dave Stevens and Morrie Turner, while voters chose José Luis García-López, Jenette Kahn, Paul Levitz, Wendy and Richard Pini, and Bill Sienkiewicz to join the class of 2019.

Other awards given out last night included the The Bill Finger Excellence In Comic Book Writing Award, which was presented to Mike Friedrich and the late E. Nelson Bridwell, and the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award, which went to Lorena Alvarez.

The 2019 recipients of the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award were Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, for his work on Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico, and comic artist Tula Lotay, AKA Lisa Wood, for creating the UK-based Thought Bubble Festival. And La Revisteria Comics in Argentina won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

Velvet Underground were not commercially successful but are now regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. Brian Eno said that everyone who heard the first VU album wanted to start a band. Reed had a deadpan voice that, for me, required forgiveness as singers go (though he did step up on occasion, particularly when he sung with The Blind Boys on THE RAVEN album). Eventually I connected with his noir fiction, transgressive “eyewitness reporting” lyrics and songcraft. He neither approved or disapproved of the subjects he sang about and, in the end, he just wanted to write catchy rock’n’roll. Over the years I’ve performed at least 6 Reed/VU songs—recording 2: “What Goes On” and “Sunday Morning,” on which I was joined by members of The Badlees (who did a splendid job in one afternoon). Reed himself commended our cover and promoted it on his website in the mid-90s. HB and RIP Lou.

At around ten o'clock in the evening of July 6th 1988 the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea was rocked by a huge explosion.

The 30th anniversary of the disaster will be remembered at a special memorial service tonight in Aberdeen at the Piper Alpha Memorial Garden in Hazlehead Park. The names of all 167 men who lost their lives on July 6 1988 will be read out during the ceremony to be attended by their relatives, friends and representatives from the oil and gas sector.

The vast human tragedy of that day sent shockwaves around the world and forced the industry to take a painstaking look at its practices. On that night, there were more than 220 men on board Piper Alpha, with most in the accommodation section and more than 60 working on the night shift.

After a gas leak on the North Sea platform a series of explosions followed and, minutes later, it was engulfed in a fireball. By the time the rescue helicopters arrived, flames were reaching 300ft and could be seen from 70 miles away. The smoke and fire made evacuation by helicopter or lifeboat impossible, and many people gathered in the accommodation area. Remaining there meant certain death. With the platform ablaze and exploding, some men jumped off from 175ft above the North Sea. Others plunged from lower levels or clambered down ropes and hoses before plummeting into the water. There were only 62 survivors that night in what remains the world’s worst offshore disaster. An inquiry led by Lord Cullen opened in Aberdeen in January 1989, ended in February the following year, and published its report of several hundred pages nine months after that. It led to North Sea safety being shifted from the Department of Energy to the Health and Safety Executive, and meant that automatic shut-down valves were made mandatory on rigs to starve a fire of fuel.

It's not often I would name all those that perished, but on the 3oth anniversary I think it is only fitting to do so, RIP to the 167......

[ Bachelor Party 2017 Chapter 1: Chasing Clouds ] For this first chapter, we explored all that Cloudchaser, Mt. Bachelor's newest lift that services a vast amount of new terrain, has to offer. We have been lucky with all the recent snowfall to be able to test the limits of what is possible on this new terrain. While this edit was filmed all over the mountain, the hallmark runs so far this season have been from Summit Chair to Cloudchaser, an incredibly long and diverse lap that holds new, untapped cornice lines, windlips, and pillow drops. The final feature hit in this first chapter is a gap that is right next to Cloudchaser and was roughly 50ft to the knuckle with a pretty gnarly in-run that requires regular footers to be on their heels practically to the takeoff. We tentatively named the gap Darrell's gap due to the fact that its proximity to the lift attracts many a Joey, Darrell, and Sherell. Stratton Matteson was the first to make it over the gap on his feet followed by Destry Serna who put down the fs1. This season has been killer, so much snow that we have at times posed the question--is this too much snow? The answer is never yes, there is always something to be had...
