COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND RADIATION (CMB)

- Electromagnetic radiation from the sky with no discernible source. The origin of radiation depends on the region of the spectrum that is observed.

- Thermal radiation left over from the time of recombination in Big Bang cosmology. They are red shifted photons that have freely streamed from an epoch when the Universe became transparent for the first time to radiation.

- CMB is fundamental to observational cosmology because it is the oldest light in the universe.

- With traditional optical telescopes, the space between stars and galaxies (the background) is completely dark. However, a radio telescope shows a faint glow, almost exactly the same in all directions, that is not associated with any star, galaxy or object. This glow is strongest in the microwave region of the radio spectrum.

RADIATION

- 3 main types of ionising radiation (emitted from the unstable nuclei of radioactive atoms): alpha, beta, and gamma

- Alpha Radiation: consists of alpha particles identical to the nucleus of a helium atom, two protons and two neutrons

- Beta Radiation: consists of high energy electrons emitted from the nucleus, they come from when a neutron splits into a proton and an electron. The electron shoots out of the nucleus at high speed, leaving the new proton. 

- Gamma Radiation: short wavelength, high frequency electromagnetic radiation. Similar to other types of electromagnetic radiation (visible light/X-ray), and can travel long distances.

- Radiation can be absorbed by certain substances in it’s path. The thicker the substance, the more radiation can be absorbed.

- Alpha Radiation: least penetrative, can be absorbed by a human hand/paper.

- Beta Radiation: can be absorbed by a thin sheet of aluminium.

- Gamma Radiation: most penetrative, can be absorbed only by many cm’s of lead or concrete. 

- They all become less intense as they travel further away from the radioactive material, as the rays spread out.

- Background radiation is present in: cosmic rays, rocks and soil, living things
