MeloMap – Where Music Meets Maps
For a recent college design assignment called "Mashup", we were asked to combine a profession and an object into a fictional brand with a visual identity. My group was given the words:
Profession: Musician Object: Location
We created MeloMap – a mobile app concept similar to Google Maps, but specifically for music lovers. It helps users discover live music concerts, festivals, and gigs happening around them, complete with real-time directions and schedules.
Our brand name "MeloMap" is a blend of "Melody" and "Map", representing how the app bridges the world of music and navigation.
Here's a preview of our logo and design work for MeloMap:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the Logo:
The logo for MeloMap reflects the fusion of sound and space. We combined visual elements inspired by:
A location pin, representing direction and discovery
A musical note, symbolizing sound, rhythm, and concerts
The design is clean and modern, using curves and minimalist shapes to keep the logo versatile across app icons, banners, and marketing. We chose a harmonious color palette that reflects creativity and movement, mirroring the dynamic experience of live music exploration.
What We Learned:
This assignment taught us the power of creative thinking and collaboration. We learned how to:
Combine two unrelated ideas into one cohesive brand concept
Develop a visual identity that communicates a clear message
Think like brand creators and not just designers
Pitch and present an idea with both logic and imagination
It was a fun and insightful experience that showed how design can turn abstract ideas into something that feels real and usable.
Let us know what you think in the comments! Would you use an app like MeloMap?

More hot design pedagogy news! 'Taking a Line for a Walk: Assignments in Design Education' is back in stock from @spectorbooks Assignments can give instructions, describe an exercise, present a problem, set out rules, propose a game, stimulate a process, or simply throw out questions. 'Taking a Line for a Walk' brings attention to something that is often neglected: the assignment as a pedagogical element and verbal artefact of design education. This book is a compendium of 224 assignments, edited by @paimnina and coedited by @emiliabergmark A reference book for educators, researchers, and students alike, it includes both contemporary and historical examples and offers a space for different lines of design pedagogy to converge and converse. An accompanying essay by Corinne Gisel takes a closer look at the various forms assignments can take and the educational contexts they exist within. 'Taking a Line for a Walk' derived from an exhibition of the same name at the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014. Assignments include: Drawing the story of Adam and Eve using only close-ups of hands; Designing and making a boxed printing kit; Type gymnastics; Developing an elevator pitch; Designing stationery for your own graphic design office; Staging and documenting a mock crime scene… and many more! #takingalineforawalk #designpedagogy #designassignments #designthinking #design https://www.instagram.com/p/CTAaI1JF7OE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Need a Little Motivation? This one was fun. I had to find an image that conveys a feeling and then create a quote that conveys the complete opposite.

Keeping Up With The Cast of The Wire
Hi there! Since this week is Design, I thought I would go ahead and make my own assignment. I was looking through other assignments and saw one called Where are They Now? This assignment takes the cast of the Wire and looks to see what other works they did before/after their time on the Wire. The other assignment I mixed it with was through and inforgraph. Infographs are great for keeping all the…

C&P #1: Common Fate - Blog Writing
Priscilla Navarro’s ( @pnavarr3design )  C&P#1
Priscilla used shape to make the common fates more recognizable. Color is also a big factor in her piece. Each shape has a different hue of purple, making them more cohesive to their patterns. She allows the circles to overlap the triangles which give them a more 3D aspect to their positioning. The more rectangular shapes follow a parallel form while the other two shapes follow a more curved direction. The title “Words Mean Nothing” most likely means that there is no need to speak when visual aid is given. Sometimes actions do speak more than words. The overall amount of movement without actual illustration of it happening does well to communicate her ideas. overall an amazing piece of art that cohesively shows movement and common fate.
Martin Alanis’s ( @zepvy ) C&P#1
Martin used both shape and negative space to show the common fate in his composition. The use of empty space allows the viewer to see the direction of the shapes. Color was also another main factor for his composition, it helps differentiate and locate the rectangular shapes. Having three differentiating colors gave it a nice appeal to the eye. The singular geometric shapes also make it easy to recognize the direction in which the shapes are going. The lack of title also allows the person viewing the piece to decide what it means to it. Great job conveying common fate.

Wax Ain't Cheap, you know
I completed the Big Caption today for another design assignment. The idea behind this one is that you take a photo from the Big Picture Web site and you recaption it so that you completely change the original meaning of the shot.
The original caption on this photo:
A worshipper lights a candle as she attends Sunday Mass led by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim in Alexander Nevski cathedral in Sofia on April 29, 2012.
I actually played with the styling of the thought bubble quite a bit to try and reduce the cheesiness factor of putting the words in an actual thought bubble.
In any case, I'm pleased with it. It makes me giggle.

This is probably the easiest-to-decipher of these submitted yet, but I had to start somewhere. I found an iPad app for drawing that was very fun to use, so I decided to put it to great use for this simple assignment between web programming and helping the kids with their snowboots.

Wish You Were Here!
For this assignment, I had to basically create my own postcard for anywhere I chose. I knew immediately that I wanted to do a postcard with Italy as the destination because it is some place I have ALWAYS wanted to visit!. I’ve never been there so I didn’t have any of my own photos to use so I used Google to find a picture I liked. There are a ton of pictures of Italy on Google images but I chose…
