In this #DesignBootcamp assignment we created boards for a horror film trailer, incorporating a few stills from the trailer footage. Here’s my take. The drips are supposed to evoke this substance that’s apparently been unearthed in the film. Not 100% sure how I feel about them. @schoolofmotion #design #graphicdesign #graphicdesigner #motiondesign #motiondesigner #schoolifmotion #film #horror (at Rincón, Puerto Rico) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1IC7qyhMU0/?igshid=1kk8qnidrm03d

Finally decided to bite the bullet and buff up my Design skills through 'School of Motion.' Been eyeing this course for the last few years, and I finally have the money and TIME to do it. We don't know how long this quarantine will last, so might as well live like tomorrow's the end. Plus discounts are all over the place so might as well take advantage. It's gonna be 13 weeks of grueling design training. School doesn't stop, but I'm starving for an art challenge. I'll try to post what I can while on this journey. Starts tomorrow, so wish me luck! šŸ˜…šŸ˜µšŸ‘ #schoolofmotion #designbootcamp #design #motiongraphics https://www.instagram.com/p/B-n0QzJJHH9/?igshid=1vjswlibfattw

I got together some blankets, some guac, and paint supplies (acrylic and watercolor) and sat myself in the Lang courtyard to hopefully get passersby to come and create something of their own. First to join were friends that I had invited beforehand. Before handing out materials, I asked those wishing to join these questions and received the following answers:
What should you like to see more of in TNS community?
- Couches
- Spaces deemed ā€œcommunity spaceā€ that aren’t centered on studying/researching etc. The spaces we have now are not comfortable and are spread out between campuses around the cite and, in turn, the community is spread out
- Apparel
- Platforms for community building i.e. art space
What do you think of using art to connect people?
- Great because relaxing and encourages conversation
- Condones a safe space where people can be respectful and share energy
Meeting strangers by offering free art supplies in exchange for their thoughts on community was gratifying, and I found that younger students (Sophomores, Juniors) had more to say about prospective improvements at TNS than older students (Seniors, Grad Students). Juniors, seniors and grad students mostly commented that they had a solid sense of community at TNS, and the varying majors allowed for a well-rounded environment. One participant shared that there was a deeper level of community that most people don’t know about. Another shared that Lang (particularly, the courtyard) is a great place to take refuge from the craziness of the city. Most shared that their favorite space to meet with friends and relax was the Lang courtyard.

Design Bootcamp
To create a greater sense of community at the New School I think it is of vital importance to forge bonds. Being in a new city, and new school can be scary, but you don’t have to do it alone. For this project I would like to set up a table in the university center where individuals would be able to fill out a short questionnaire in which they would write down something in the city that they have either never seen or done before, along with their email. With this information I would then create groups of 3 or 4 and send them out for an adventure. It would bring together students who may never have met before to do something that hopefully is new to all. Experience can forge those bonds, and by sharing this communal event it can bring people closer. Even if real friendship never blooms from this, at least you have 3 more people to say hi to. That in itself can be a big first step towards feeling a part of The New School. The simple act of inclusion is so valuable in not feeling alone.Ā
The questionnaire might look like this:
Name:
Major:
Favorite thing about NYC:
Something you have always wanted to experience in NYC:
Something you have never seen but wanted to in NYC:
Do you feel a sense of community at the TNS, if so explain. If not, what do you think can be done to combat this?:

Design Bootcamp
My plan is to design a poster to put up on each floor of my building. It will have two sections: a section asking people about what is means to be apart of a community and a second section asking about their interests and hobbies. There will be a small box next to the the poster for people to submit (anonymously) their experience with community at the New School (i.e. an experience where they felt a sense of community at the New School or a moment where they felt most disconnected from a sense of community.) The objective of the poster is to get people thinking about the idea of community at our school and to have them learn new things about the people on their floor (as well as advertise for the meeting). Maybe they have things in common with these people that they never knew about. The last part of my project is to hold a fun gathering in the lounge where people can come to discuss the sense of community at our school and share their experience with it, good or bad. I’m still working on an incentive to make people want to come.
