🌟 Bridging Tradition and the Digital Horizon: A New Architectural Dialogue 🌟
Our journey began with a hand-drawn image—a classical arch guarded by a soldier, symbolizing order and historical continuity. Beside him, a pile of discarded gear, a subtle metaphor for the disintegration of tradition under the lens of Deconstruction.
From this starting point, we embarked on a digital reimagining of the classical arch. The result? A symmetrical, reflective form that evokes both precision and possibility, one that could only exist at the intersection of human creativity and digital innovation.
🛠️ Why does this matter? Architecture, like life, is no longer confined to physical constraints. As we engage with both tradition and technology, we’re reminded that permanence is always in flux, and innovation is as much about reinterpreting the past as it is about embracing the future.
The dialogue between these two forms—one drawn by hand, the other digitally generated—asks a vital question: How do we, as architects and creatives, navigate the balance between heritage and progress? How do we leverage digital tools to extend and challenge the forms that have shaped us?
🚀 This is a conversation not just about architecture, but about the way we build, design, and live in a rapidly evolving world. By merging the classical with the digital, we begin to open new spaces for discussion and innovation.
Let’s embrace the future while honoring our roots. Let’s build bridges between the physical and digital, between stability and transformation.

Nicole Green Design Talk
The design talk that Nicole Green gave was very informative and will be helpful for the future, not only in this class, but for the job world.  Nicole did a really wonderful job at getting us to understand if our design questions are relevant and if people are really looking for a solution for them.  If we spend the semester putting all this effort into a business or product that doesn’t solve a real problem that people are facing, then it was a waste.  I know that I had been struggling with how I wanted to approach people with interviewing, but listening to her presentation, and giving us tips has helped me feel more comfortable.  I understand the different between a good and bad question and know that if I ask that right questions in my interviews, that I will get the answers that I am looking for.  In addition to the interview questions, I appreciated her tips on how to give an elevator pitch.  Public speaking has never been my strong suit, but I will continue to work on it and use her format to show everyone else why they should believe in me and the product I am creating.
Questions for Ilya Slootsky and Hunter Ruth
Can you explain your creative process and what major steps do you take when going through it?
What are some qualities or skills that you feel every graphic designer should have?
As a developer, do you find that you have to work with clients who aren’t strong with technology?  How do you explain to them what you are doing in a way that they can understand?

As We Speak, an exhibition of Dutch and Korean artists opened yesterday in Seoul at @puntobluseoul. Part of the exhibition is participatory and invites the audience to create collages from the source material of the artists’ work shared as posters. Friends @chris_____ro and @drchae are participating artists and I thought I would create an accidental collaboration between them by putting their works back to back and cut-out shapes from one, which gave form to the other. #PuntoBlu #ChrisRo #JamesChae #AsWeSpeak(at Punto Blu Seoul)

Jessica M. Silvaggi: Design Talk
Jessica M. Silvaggi, Ph.D., C.L.P, Senior Licensing Manager (UWM Research Foundation)
1)  Are on the fly ideas or the thoroughly thought out ideas the most successful?
2) What characteristics have you found in successful products?
3)What products do you recall have popped out in your life?
Intellectual Property:
Patents
-describe everything about it so someone can explain it
-more useful,
-generally spread from country to country,
Trademarks
-Puts peoples on notice that your trying to get it to be a registered
Trade secrets
-can last a long long time, your ability to keep it save keep it for you.
Copyrights
-It cannot be an inventions
-If you reguster it you can sue people
 Design Patent: can last 14
- the design of a a thing, how it looks
Utility Patent: 20 Years
- the size
Inventions must pass 2 bard to be patentable
Usefulness
Novelty
non-Obviousness
Jessica really gave us a great Ideas a stop how we can really move forward with our companies. I always knew it took a lot of work to make your company official and copyrighted, but these are so many different types of intellectual properties and you can’t really use all of these at once.  I learned that you can register at any time, but you can’t sue someone who is copying you until the register goes through. I think the system works great but it’s really intense. I learned that there are 3 different intellectual properties that can help keep your company safe: Patents, Trademarks, Trade secrets, copyrights.  I found that a lot of companies have Trade secrets and that trade secrets are not necessary to share with you customers.

Design Talks with Steve Kodis/Mark and Margaret Fairbanks
Design For good:
One thing I definitely took away from the lecture Design For Good was how to go about making and designing a flag. Regardless I found that this wasn’t the point of the lecture. The more important information that I was noticing was they why and how things happen. The most important thing I took away from this lecture was “Think about something in a new and meaningful way”. This resonates with me because of the projects we are doing. Finding information or maybe even products and generating new ideas that create meaning in the way they are designed but also because you think it’s meaningful. This quality is important in my design process because I want my audience to care as much as I do about food waste. If I can think and create something in a meaningful way I think this step will be much easier to achieve.
Islands of Brilliance:
Something that I really thought was very powerful was Islands of Brilliance’s use of data and number to create such a powerful and thought provoking message. The range of data that was presented was incredible because it showed all the negative data that they were finding (which is very disheartening) but then they use their own generated data from their business that is incredibly positive and uplifting. This was very important to me because of the way they used data to evoke emotion and concern in a visually striking way. I hope to use data in this way throughout the semester to show that there is a high level of concern about food waste that ends up in landfills. This will hopefully set up the scene for things such as my pitch.
Brian Thomson Questions:
1. What do you do when you run into a research block?
2. How do you find new information and generate new ideas when this occurs?
3. What do you think is the most important type of research?

After enriching intruduction key note by Jie Shen, Associate Professor, School of Design, Jiangnan University students got into international teams and started to explore intensively on the topic. Defining different fields using common design research methods they tried to reflect and answer on following questions:
What about the connection between elderly and the young?
What about the emerging active aging?
What about roles of elderly in families, communities and society?
What about to perceive being elder of yourselves?
What about elderly in the eyes of the young as you?
What about the interaction between the young and elderly in families?
What about the life of multigenerational family household?

Participatory Design for Serious Games
Hi! I am co-editing a special issue for IJHCS on participatory design for serious games:
International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS): Special issue on Participatory Design for Serious Games
Guest editors:
Rilla Khaled, University of Malta Vero Vanden Abeele, KU Leuven Maarten Van Mechelen, KU Leuven Mina Vasalou, Institute of Education
Topic
Participatory design (PD) approaches are gaining traction across the field of HCI. However, their use in serious game design remains less frequent. While the application of PD is a situated phenomenon, it is still possible to distil some shared causes for this that apply across contexts, including historically "designer-led" game design processes, difficulties reaching common ground within interdisciplinary teams involved in serious games design, and end users' lack of domain expertise. The aim of this special issue is to make progress in advancing epistemological and related methodological developments. We seek case studies of how PD has been used in different stages of serious game design processes, specific methods appropriated or developed for doing so, and details of (problematic) dynamics between PD processes and serious game design. Authors are asked to engage in critical reflections with a particular focus on the complex interaction between the values of PD, the pedagogical and entertainment requirements of serious games, and the multi-faceted perspectives that design stakeholders often introduce. The special issue is expected to be of interest to both researchers and practitioners of the games, educational technologies and PD communities.
Case studies will be encouraged to address, while not being limited to, the following questions:
How does expertise influence power dynamics between different stakeholders? How should future players be involved in the design of game systems if they do not understand how game systems work, or equally if they don’t possess domain expertise?
How should we build on the perspectives, values, and ideas of players if, as politically incorrect as it sounds, these are not game-friendly, clash with the design aesthetics of game designers or contravene evidence from learning theories?
Given the type of stakeholders involved in serious games design, what are the value dilemmas that can occur and how can these be overcome by fostering intragroup or co-design dynamics?
What do researchers and users expect from PD and are these expectations realized in PD projects?
In light of the empowerment focus of PD, how can we use game design processes to empower users, and what do we do when users do not want to be empowered?
How might we use PD to foster an accountability culture in relation to the promise of serious games? How do we identify and address tokenism?
Submission instructions
Manuscripts should generally not exceed 8000 words (excluding references). Papers should be prepared according to the IJHCS Guide for authors, and should be submitted online according to the journal’s instructions. The IJHCS Guide for authors and online submission are available at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ijhcs. Papers will be desk reviewed at a first stage by the visiting journal editors to establish their relevance for the special issue.
Submission deadline: March 1, 2015 First round of notifications: May 15, 2015 Final round of notifications: September 30, 2015
