Packaging design goes beyond mere aesthetics; it plays a crucial role in brand differentiation and consumer perception. A well-designed package not only protects the product but also communicates brand identity, values, and product attributes. From structural design to graphics and materials selection, packaging designers ensure that every aspect aligns with the brand’s overarching strategy.

CRUSH CUP - THE REVIVAL OF TERRACOTTA
Introduction: The UK faces a pressing issue with over 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups discarded annually, with limited recycling. These cups, made from paper and plastic, are challenging to recycle due to their waterproof coating. Their disposal contributes to landfill waste, emitting potent greenhouse gas methane. This situation offers research opportunities in areas like public perception, coffee consumption practices, and the takeaway coffee culture.
The concept: The concept revolves around introducing terracotta cups as an environmentally conscious substitute for disposable coffee cups. Drawing inspiration from India's traditional tea culture, specifically the kullads and Bhar cups, this proposal aims to establish a sustainable service paradigm for daily coffee consumers. The use of terracotta cups as an alternative to disposable coffee cups.
Inspiration from India: In stark contrast to the ubiquity of plastic-laden counterparts, these meticulously handcrafted terracotta clay cups, reminiscent of their historical prominence at India's bustling railway stations and vibrant street corners, emerge as a formidable and biodegradable contender.
Renowned for their ability to accumulate the nuanced flavours of the tea, these cups embrace a ceremonial closure to each libation, a finality encapsulated by the concluding of each beverage ceremoniously, with a customary crushing post-use, a subtle yet profound ritual.
Why in the UK? In a departure from a well-established tapestry of generational pottery craftsmanship that graces the Indian landscape, the United Kingdom finds itself at a juncture where technology assumes a pivotal role. Clay 3D printing technology emerges as a potent force, seamlessly bridging the gap between tradition and innovation. The cutting-edge production techniques empower the creation of customisable cups that adhere to the most discerning industry standards and measurements. Each cup caters adeptly to the myriad preferences of coffee consumers- be it the embrace of piping hot espresso or the cool iced latte.
Personal take and putting value to the project: I feel that this is a hidden issue that I identified. As a coffee lover, I know how convenient it is to get a takeaway coffee but I also realise it is a major source of waste. Design can help materialise hidden facts and less recognised problem areas of a system. Small progress is still progress. Though the impact is hard to put a value on, the aim of the project is very ambitious, its impact would be a ground-breaking innovation revolutionising the way of coffee completely. It might seem like 'one cup' to you, but we also must look beyond the physical value and take the responsibilities we all carry with a tinge of seriousness.

Visual Diary 4 - Serving vs. Helping Designs
As I examine how design impacts the audiences we design for, I also look at the purpose of our designs. It's usually thought that human-centered design is serving those that we design for but what is in the distinction between designing with the intent to serve and designing with the intent to help. Many people will think "Well, if I design to serve, isn't that helping?" When we look at the distinctions between the definitions of "serve" and "help", we have a better view of the purpose, audience, and intent of our designs.
To me, an example of a service design is a design for a soup kitchen that will provide the service of feeding those in need. Most times there is no ask or reciprocity expected for those who need this service. It's a basic human need to have food and this service often fulfills that need for the good of those in need. Those who are hungry and are fed are not told that they have to repay the service. Yes, it helps but overall, feeding those without food is a necessary service.
The UPO - United Planning Organization, which has several offices in Washington, DC is an organization that provides help services for residents of the District who are in need. Some programs have requirements where to receive certain help services, you may be required to participate in a training program or adhere to other stipulations. There is a give and take in the design of the help programs vs. providing a service/product where there is no expectation for any repayment. Service design sees a need to fill and designs a plan to fulfill that need. It also considers the audience, impact, timeline, and other factors that correlate with the needs of the audience. The helping service often looks at an audience and sees how they can be helped to obtain the things that they need to survive. A helping service like those at the UPO may come with guidelines that could be considered returns on the investment of helping. Maybe the help for the audience is job training. The return may be that after the program concludes, the trainee has to work at an organization for a period of time (fulfilling a service).

Week 8:
On Monday we had an introduction course in visual identity. It included two lectures and a task in which we were to help each other name the different class projects. Lecturing was a great way to jumpstart the graphical engine. The task proved helpful in ideating around names and associations. Later in the afternoon we decided that we would call our service "Utenfor Allfarvei", translated; "Off the beaten track" - something that is out of the ordinary, innovative and original, with a natural connotation to the road.
Tuesday was a day of gathering visual insight in our theory heavy project. We sat down in front of our computers, gathering relevant photos from all over the internet. When we started to categorize them, we saw that we could form three interesting conceptual paths for our visual identity. The first was called "Mellom bakkar og berg", which pointed to the Norwegian people. The second we called "Den mystiske skogen", which translates to "The mystical forest", entailing nature and Norwegian art. The third concept was called "Emblemer og ornamenter", "Emblems and ornaments", which included Norwegian logos and historical royal emblems. We had a chat with our supervisor, Vera, who was pleased and told us to continue the work. Later in the afternoon we carefully initiated the logo creation process.
Wednesday was a continuation of what we explored on Tuesday. We pushed forward in our search for a logo fitting our project. We created different logos within the three concepts, dipping into many different styles. We also explored audio and the possibilities in visuals through sound. Quickly discussing different surfaces also made it easier to envision scale and important logo characteristics.
Thursday morning included a visit to the Norwegian folk museum at Bygdøy. We got off to a slow start this day as Bjørn came directly from a job interview and Benjamin experienced some annoying bicycle malfunctions on the way to the destination. At the museum we got good insight into Norwegian history, displayed though artifacts, historical architecture and interactive storytelling. Especially interesting were ornamental details and hand done detailing on different objects. The most interesting details were photographed for later inspection and possible inspiration into further graphic development. The Sámi exhibitions were eye opening and shed light on an important part of Norwegian history. After a day at the museum, we had gathered tons of material for further use. The evening was spent at the annual school flea market - an excellent ending to a great day!
Friday we continued our logo creation process. Exploring further into emblems and monograms, our logo quantity grew rapidly. The increasing vastness in logos showed us how much room there is for creative freedom in a project like this. The gatherings from Thursday's visit at the Norwegian folk museum added some new qualities to the process, and was great for understanding scale and graphic possibilities on objects. Afterwards, Benjamin packed his bags and headed for Bergen, while Bjørn celebrated the arrival of spring.
To summarize the week, we began developing our project's visual identity. We both found it fun to start the production of graphical content, as it had been something we had looked forward to. Developing three main categories for logos broadened the creative space and made it possible to explore a lot at once. With a good introductory production and exploration, we look forward to the coming week.

Introduction to My Field Research Collection Diary.
I am going to be taking you through my field research collection diary.
Starting with an introduction. In one of my Post Grad subjects, Service Design, we were assigned to form a group, and within this group, we had to select and agree on a nonprofit organization we wanted to help. Once the selection process was complete, we needed to investigate further whether they needed our help to solve a problem that they faced. Once the problem was found, the group put together a research plan that will help us solve the problem the nonprofit organisation is facing. The processes will be explained further in the posts that will follow this one. The process of putting the research plan together has been completed. The following posts on this Tumblr account will explain the process of what research was collected and why. Image References: Brief Icon PNG Transparent Background. [Online image]. (n.d.).
