I’m so sorry if you’ve already answered this somewhere, but how do you design your characters?
I’ve been trying to make an OC from the prohibition era and it turns out there’s basically nothing to work with for men’s outfits, so I’m curious how you made this many that look unique and fitting to the characters
There is so much to work with, though! You will tend to find more of a focus on variety in women's fashion, but there is still quite a lot of menswear to ogle too. I suppose it's just a matter of searching out ideas and inspiration in the rights corners. Here are a few suggestions:
Old Clothing Catalogues -
Collections from Sears-Roebuck and other popular clothing retailers are pretty easy to find compiled into relatively inexpensive books, or just floating online.
Tumblr media
A fair bit of it is in the public domain now.
--Here's an entire 1922 catalogue of stuff to flip through.
-----------------
Contemporary Artwork -
Some phenomenal illustrators were working in this field amidst the "Golden Age of Illustration" and featured prominently on the covers of magazines and on the ads inside. There was a lot of emphasis on fashion.
Tumblr media
Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post are a couple of the more prominent and easily searchable resources. The costuming on the cover art always has a lot of personality.
Tumblr media
There's Rockwell, of course, and it's almost impossible to go wrong with J. C. Leyendecker. He's probably best known for his Arrow Collar ad art, but even his sock ads are like…
Tumblr media
There were numerous other amazing and influential illustrators working at the time too. Here's a list of some of them. Here's a bonus Henry Raleigh featuring some of his fabulously-dressed people.
Tumblr media
-----------------
Blogs and Articles -
There are so many of them! If you want historical accuracy, be wary of write-ups pulling all of their references from film and television. There's nothing wrong with using those for inspiration if you aren't too concerned with historicity, but there are some pretty comprehensive and well-researched things out there with more of an eye on actual fashion history too:
--Gentleman's Gazette - What Men Really Wore in the 1920s
--The Fashionisto - 1920s Men's Fashion
-----------------
Digital Collections -
There are numerous digital historic image collections stemming from universities, museums, libraries, and the government that are free to peruse too.
--The Metropolitan Museum has a searchable catalog of exhibits that includes fashion and photos
--Here's some things from the New York Public Library
-----------------
Photos at Large -
If you aren't sure where to start, image searching for any of Hollywood's early celebrities will typically turn up a bevy of production stills and promotional photography featuring a variety of fashions. Here's a random Getty images search for Harold Lloyd. A lot of standard 3 piece suits, but a lot of stuff with added character too.
Tumblr media
Photography was generally quite accessible by the 1920s, though, and you can find a lot of authentic photos of people from all walks of life, out in the wild wearing all sorts of clothes.
Tumblr media
This is by no means the limit to the resources available, but hopefully it'll provide some leaping-off points for designing looks for your characters!

Elena Dawson: The Art of Artisanal Fashion
Today's blog post marks a special moment for me. Not only because it's my first on Shifting Patterns, but also because I deeply admire and enjoy the work of this designer. So much so that my wife and I even got married in her garments. Today, I want to introduce you to Elena Dawson.
Tumblr media
Elena Dawson, a London-born fashion designer for menswear and womenswear, keeps much of her personal life under wraps. There's no existing website anymore, and her former blog is no longer accessible. Only a Instagram account with a couple of posts and a contact email serves as a point of contact. It all somewhat reminds of the enigmatic Paul Harnden, doesn't it? But we'll get to that later. She studied Art and Fashion Design at the University of Brighton and worked as a seamstress after completing her degree. At that time, she said, "I draw on the knowledge I learned at the tailors still now in the way I make clothing."
In 2000, she co-founded the clothing line "Paul Harnden Clothiers" with her ex-partner Paul Harnden. She was an integral part of the design, concept, and business until 2009 with Paul Harnden, who was primarily known under the name "Paul Harnden Shoemakers" until then, when she decided to establish her own clothing and shoe label in East Sussex. Her studio is located there as well. Despite Dawson's departure, Paul Harnden's ready-to-wear collections continue to this day. Since 2009, the brand has naturally grown, but Dawson still produces her clothes and shoes herself, supported by a small team. Everything is produced in-house in multiple studio spaces, but all is handmade.
Tumblr media
The aesthetic of Dawson's work at Paul Harnden and her own brand has definitely evolved over the years. Paul Harnden, who is now known not only for his shoes but also for his blazers/jackets, coats, trousers, and shirts, has a rather clean cut and neatly sewn edges. On the other hand, Elena Dawson has a rather rough look and is known for her unfinished seams with dangling fabric scraps. It's sometimes hard to describe, but she has a very romantic, poetic, Victorian look that partly reminds me of Tim Burton movies.
When I put on one of her beloved blazers, I often feel like a part of Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, almost like a wardrobe from the 19th century. I own 2 blazers (linen and wool), 1 linen shirt, 2 pants (linen and cotton), and silk accessories from Dawson. My wife has a mix of a coat and dress. All her clothes are labelled with the classic "Elena Dawson - Made In England" label and the washing/material information written in her really unreadable handwriting with a Sharpie.
Tumblr media
The coats and blazers (mostly) feature beige/white cotton lining, and the classic look, often seen online, is achieved by rolling the sleeves backward, exposing the lining through the open seams. She works with a dress form, sculpturing everything, and only uses natural materials. Her favorites are English wool, Indian cotton, Irish linen, and Chinese silk. She describes her work as follows: "When you work on alterations you are really tearing the guts out of the garment, performing a sort of autopsy—you really get to see a garment at its most vulnerable point. Observing this state of semi-deconstruction in the making of a garment or shoe is what I like to retain in my finished work."
You'll rarely get the chance to buy her pieces online, as there are hardly any retailers offering her items online. She mentioned: "We don't do much press or social media work and we don't sell online at all. I'm not against that. It's just not the brand's main job." Elena Dawson limits the maximum order quantity and carefully chooses her retailers. She prefers to keep the brand small, and even on classic online platforms like Grailed, Vestiaire Collective, or eBay, you won't find many of her items used.
Tumblr media
I highly recommend visiting a retailer near you for the experience alone and trying on the clothes in-store. In my case, it's Harvey's in Berlin. However, the most well-known point of sale is probably Dover Street Market in London, with whom she has a strong relationship, as Dover Street Market has actively supported her brand from the beginning, granting her a significant presence there. In Tokyo, I was also able to find her pieces at DSM and at the Comme des Garcons Pocket Store.
The result is garments full of personality that evolve over time alongside one's own personality, incomparable to any other looks consumed and worn nowadays. Each piece, crafted by her hands, is unique, and I'll tell you, the first time I wore an Elena Dawson blazer at Harvey's in Berlin, it resonated with me. The look, the weight, the fit… it felt like a second skin, and over the course of 2 years, seeing how it aged with me, it became more like an extension of myself each day.
Tumblr media
Here's to Elena — may your artistic journey continue to inspire and captivate for years to come!

Lewis Hamilton's style statement ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix has fans comparing him to 'SHREK'
Lewis Hamilton’s bold statement look in Baku ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has some fans comparing the seven-time world champion to 'SHREK'… whilst others hail the return of ‘Lewis Hamilton Fashion Week’! By Tamara Prenn For Mailonline Published: 13:24 EDT, 27 April 2023 | Updated: 13:24 EDT, 27 April 2023 Lewis Hamilton stepped out in an eye-catching look ahead of this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix that had fans taking to Twitter to discuss his fashion statement.  The seven-time world champion donned a head-to-toe Louis Vuitton outfit from the French fashion house's Fall/Winter 2023 collection as he made his way through the paddock in Baku for media duties before race weekend gets underway with tomorrow's opening practice session.  Hamilton has long enjoyed a relationship with the LVMH cornerstone brand, burnished by his friendship with the house's former menswear designer Virgil Abloh.  When Abloh died in November 2021 after privately battling cancer, Hamilton penned an emotional tribute to his friend and collaborator, calling him an 'icon and legend' and saying that he would 'never forget' Abloh's unwavering support.  But whilst fans poked fun at the striking combination on the social media platform, they also praised Hamilton for once again making the paddock his runway.  Lewis Hamilton sported an eye-catching green outfit in Baku ahead of race weekend The seven-time world champion completed the look with Louis Vuitton trainers, matching green sunglasses and an array of jewellery One fan said: 'The Lewis Hamilton fashion week is back, ladies and gentlemen, today it looks like he was attacked by Shrek but anyway I like it'.  Another agreed, saying: 'love the jacket'.  A third queried the practicality of the outfit, adding: 'Bro decided to be a plant today. Seriously how this man manages to wear such heavy looking clothes in a weather like that'.  But another dubbed the Mercedes driver 'cool as ever'.  Fans took to Twitter to praise the drivers' wardrobe choice but not without some gentle teasing Hamilton will hope that Mercedes' pre-hiatus form continues after the break in Baku, following the driver's second place finish at the Australian Grand Prix in March.  Having had a less-than impressive start to the season – which saw concern grow that the constructor had been unable to banish the demons that haunted the team last season – team principal Toto Wolff had warned fans that they might not see improvements in the W14 until at least the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.  But a strong showing in Melbourne hinted that Hamilton and his team-mate George Russell might yet be competitive, if not at the front of the pack, then in the fight for second place in the constructor's championship.  One fan wondered jokingly if Hamilton's sartorial statement was more loaded than it seemed The Briton returns to Azerbaijan and a race circuit where he has won once before with an eye to ramping up his W14's ability to compete at the front of the pack One fan on Twitter wondered Hamilton was sending a message with his green outfit choice, stating tongue-in-cheek: 'Lewis to Aston Martin confirmed'.  Hamilton's future has been a talking point from the first race of the season, with rumours swirling that if the Briton feels he is unable to realistically challenge for a historic eighth world championship, he may move teams.  Whisperings that Ferrari might be the best option should Hamilton make a shock move away from Mercedes led to questions posed for the Italian team's star driver Charles Leclerc.  On Thursday, Leclerc refused to rule out a future move to Mercedes should the constructors set up a swap, but said that for now, he is 'fully focused' on winning with Ferrari.  Share or comment on this article: Lewis Hamilton's style statement ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix has fans comparing him to 'SHREK' via Formula One | Mail Online https://www.dailymail.co.uk?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

The State of American Fashion
Tumblr media
(DISCLAIMER: This article was originally published 1/11/21 on Medium.com, prior to the creation of venustadt.com. As such, my opinions may or may not have altered since the text below was originally written. This article has been re-published here to track my growth as a writer.)
Amid the final days of terrible 2020, there was a row on Twitter about the value of well-known American fashion brand Michael Kors.
“Someone posted a MK purse for Christmas talking about shes spoiled,” Twitter user @Lanazattitude posted Christmas Day. “1st of all MK been played out and thats not being spoiled.”
The lone tweet received around 1,000 replies and over 9,000 quote tweets, sparking a Black Twitter debate about luxury fashion and elitism. But no matter one’s personal opinions on Michael Kors, it is easy to see how quickly people are to undervalue American fashion brands compared to foreign titans like Chanel, Dior, or Balenciaga, to name a few.
The New York fashion scene has never enjoyed the grandeur of its sister fashion hubs London, Milan, or Paris. Many believe that this is due to New York’s lack of large heritage brands. According to former Wall Street Journal fashion and style columnist Christina Binkley, European fashion brands have historical roots in the luxury business due to their origins as artisanal houses. For example, the current French luxury industry owes much to King Louis XIV, who supported French luxury systems until his death in 1715, 61 years before the United States was founded.
This isn’t to say that the U.S. lacks a fashion heritage altogether. Since New York first established itself as a major international fashion force at the 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show, the American fashion identity has been characterized by its free-spiritedness, prioritizing casual-chic practicality and comfort.
“Americans have a tendency to dress toward the middle,” Deirdre Clemente, fashion historian and curator, told Fashionista’s Maria Bobilo in 2017. “Starting at about the 1930s, dressing like you had money became uncool.”
This American way of “dressing towards the middle” helped make brands like Halston, Donna Karan, and Ralph Lauren influential. This free-spirited attitude can still be seen in American fashion brands today with the rise of athleisure, activewear, and streetwear, which are becoming increasingly popular among international markets. In particular, streetwear has become a powerful force within the industry, as seen with the appointment of Off-White founder Virgil Abloh to artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear in 2018 within the collections of luxury brands like Céline. Brands like Supreme have transformed the way consumers view luxury, reflecting a “bottom-up” trickle of influence in which consumers dictate trends rather than celebrities or traditional fashion industry authorities.
Still, it occasionally feels as if America’s fashion industry is on shaky ground. Even before the pandemic, which forced designers to move shows online or cancel altogether, New York Fashion Week had been labeled a relic that no longer aligned with the way Americans purchased clothing. As fashion trends came and went due to the influence of fast fashion, designers were drained creatively because of the excessive amount of collections produced each year. Foreign buyers and magazine editors often considered skipping New York to avoid the resulting tedious collection from overworked designers.
The ongoing crisis has only made things more uncertain. While stores like Neiman Marcus and J. C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, other brands were forced to contact suppliers to cancel orders, creating financial uncertainty among overseas garment workers. But while specific categories have suffered because of government-mandated lockdowns, others — namely streetwear and athleisure — have only grown stronger. Though the money spent by Americans on clothing has steadily declined since 2018, online sales of leggings, hoodies, and sweatpants have boomed since March, according to Quartz.
Like any other industry, American fashion exists in a constant flux state due to internal and external forces. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the fashion industry must brace itself for more inevitable changes and perhaps some much-needed evolution. Perhaps Business of Fashion’s Lauren Sherman said it best in 2019:
“…let’s stop pushing an outmoded model of what an American fashion model should look like and embrace the entrepreneurial, outside spirit at the heart of Americanness, inspiring a new generation to shake things up.”

Cristobal Balenciaga
Cristobal Balenciaga was born in 1885  in Getaria which was a small fishing village in northern Spain.  His mother was a stream stress which is how he ended up getting into fashion. He watched her and her clients which where the most fashionable and glamourous women in the village.  At the age of only 12 he begin an tailoring apprenticeship in the neighbouring fashionable resort of stan Sebastian. This is where it all started for him as his first fashion house in 1917 named after a shortening of his mothers maiden name- Eisa. Balenciaga opened fashion houses in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Paris in 1937  the fashion houses (Avenue Georges V) quickly became the cities most popular, most expensive and exclusive couturier.  With the apprenticeships and his mother being a seamstress this training help set him  apart from the other big designers of his time. With Cristóbal Balenciaga the design process for him started with the fabric not the sketch “it’s the fabric that decides” he stated, showing he could manipulate the materials to show there very best effect. Balenciaga knew the craft inside out and was adept at every stage of the making process. Balenciaga's Spanish heritage influenced a lot of the iconic designs. The wide hipped ‘infanta’ dress from his 1930s collection drew inspiration from the 17th century Spanish artist Diego Velázquez.  In the later phase of his career, in the 1950s Balenciaga was pioneering with new shapes never seen before in the women's fashion industry.  The radical designs developed season by season as he redefined and reworked at the looks created his style and a name for himself and his fashion house. In 1957 he shocked the fashion world with the introduction of the 'sack dress', a straight up and down shift dress which completely eliminated the waist. At a time when Christian Dior's hour-glass shaped New Look was still dominant, the 'sack' was initially met with hostility from both clients and press. "It's hard to be sexy in a sack!" cried the Daily Mirror. Like many of Balenciaga's most radical designs, this look eventually filtered into the mainstream. The sack dress was the forerunner of the ubiquitous mini-dress of the 1960s and remains a fashion staple today. He then retired and past on the fashion house, however Balenciaga came out of retirement in 1972 to create the wedding dress of Spanish aristocrat and socialite María del Carmen Martínez-Bordiú , he sadly passed two weeks after this.
youtube
youtube
Product- Balenciaga has had many collection over the year all by different designers but all the product and innovative designs and one on there own, they have women and menswear, something for everyone with each collection they bring out. The brand has ready to wear items, leather goods, shoes, bags and apparel for men and women
Price- Balenciaga's is a brand based on luxury items meaning their prices are very expensive so there have a small group in their target market and very few people can afford to pay the extreme amount of money for just one items.
Place- Balenciaga sell they product online and in store however their main source for purchasing their items is probably online as everyone can access this and is the most relevant way to buy anything now and will be for a long period of time. The items in store are very limited as not a lot of store carry items like these as such as luxurious at Balenciaga's products.
Promotion- Balenciaga advertise in big cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi and  Chandigarh just a few examples, they do a lot of celebrity marketing this is such a clever idea to promote a brand as when people see big celebrities wearing the brand, they immediately want to own that, Balenciaga did this with Kim Kardashian she wore a lot of Balenciaga recently which was such a smart idea as Kim is so relevant and on trend now. They also use a lot of social media which is probably the most relevant way of promoting  these day as everyoneis using social media and doing campaigns on social media you know everyone will be seeing this and if people are liking and sharing this they can use this of a way of feedback for the company.
youtube
Nicolas Ghesquiere took a freelance job that took him to Balenciaga in 1995, when the Balenciaga creative director Josephus Thimister however he was fired two year later, and Nicolas tapped in and it was the start of his 15-year run at  Balenciaga.  Nicolas reportedly doubled the income of Balenciaga's sale when arriving. Whilst at Balenciaga he delivered us the 1980s inspired fashion and the iconic lariat handbag, he went on to expand the number of collection for Balenciaga and continued to produce innovative design such as the short gladiator style skirt and the toga dresses, knee high gladiator sandals and so much more like collections inspired by some of Balenciaga's original designs.
youtube
Balenciaga’s target audience is men and women who live a luxury lifestyle and prefer a different side of sophisticated, however now the time and generation has changed the new target audience is the new generation of fashion enthusiasts. All the customers that buy Balenciaga's products are aware of  the trends in fashion and the fashion world of this generation. The target market for Balenciaga is a very wealthy group of people due to the high prices of all the products and especially if they are buying straight of the runway and the ready to wear collection.
Spring 2016 ready to wear runway is my favorite collection. The collection was designed by Alexander Wang just before he left. His final runway called swan song was said to be the freest collection he did for the house. All this collections was made entirely from shade of ivory, all in soft natural fabrics like linen cotton. All the designs looked effortless . The work for this collection started after the announcement that Wang would not be renewing his contract to the Balenciaga fashion house. His las collection was his best collection, some people believe this was because he let his guard down due to it being his last and wanting to focus on creating a signature label of his own. Although the vibes around this collection is very relaxed a lot of smocking, ruching and ladder stitching went into creating this collection while remaining light. I think the entire collection is so beautiful and elegant with also a bit of edge thrown into the mix which make it so interesting and caught my attention when looking through all the collection of Balenciaga throughout the year, this is with out a doubt my favorite, due to the effortlessly pretty vibes it has and all the shapes within the collection.

It's weird to say that a high-street fast fashion collaboration is a highlight for a brand, but as a long time customer (since I think their second menswear season) I really loved this Zara x Studio Nicholson collaboration that came out late last year.
As Studio Nicholson has become bigger, with multiple drops a year and sprawling out into more categories I feel like some of the brilliant simplicity and wearability of those earlier collections has been diluted recent collections haven't always felt cohesive. Which is not to say there aren't great clothes, just that they don't always hang together as well as they could.
The first Zara x Studio Nicholson collaboration took this even farther, it was as if given the buying power of reach of Zara they decided to push it as far as it could go. The resulting collection felt messy, overworked, and seemed to flood reselling sites not long after it launched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By contrast the more recent collaboration feels much more confident: super focused, luxurious and modular. It feels in the best possible way like a the uniform of a fashion buyer in the mid-90s. It has a pair of denim sets (Black, washed blue), some black and grey Italian wool suiting, rich, substantial knitwear and some Japanese tech-sportswear influences sprinkled throughout. There are the usual hints of the Row and Phoebe Philo thats often there in Studio Nicholson but also nods to Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Jil Sander and prime 80s and 90s-era Calvin Klein and Donna Karan.
Having lived with the few pieces I picked up when it launched for a few months now I can also say the quality compares well with the mainline which is impressive considering the price. I doubt anyone is making any margin on this. There is a whole piece you can get into about the ethics of working with Zara but putting that aside, looking at the short list of successful premium/high street collaborations (Lemaire x Uniqlo, Jil Sander x Uniqlo... that's about it) it's great to see a brand make something this good at this level of quality, that's this accessible.
What this actually feels like is something along the lines of what DKNY for Donna Karan or CK for Calvin Klein was doing in the mid 90s when there was a need for high-quality diffusion lines for department stores and boutiques, where the designers would tone down the trend-led pieces so that an average person on a decent income could invest in a nice coat or suit and younger people could get jeans and sportswear. Those lines died off in the early 00's as the department stores and boutiques that supported them started to disappear and online sales made brand dilution a risk but I think this is the spirit of this collection and it's all the better for it.

Snyder's reimagination of the silhouette arrives just in time for a summer defined by understated luxury. Plus, with non-marking Vibram® outsoles, complete with Sperry's signature razor-cut Wave-SipingTM technology, these shoes promise both traction and durability. Each pair is meticulously handsewn in traditional moccasin style, a testament to the dedication to craftsmanship shared by both brands.
Snyder himself reflects on the collaboration, expressing his lifelong admiration for American heritage brands and his desire to infuse his signature design touches into this iconic silhouette while honoring Sperry's legacy.
Jonathan Frankel, President of Sperry, echoes this sentiment, highlighting how Snyder's classic yet modern approach perfectly complements Sperry's timeless appeal, resulting in an instant classic.
