My June 2023 books read. I continued my efforts to finish out some series such as #AaronElkins #GideonOliver forensic anthology series. I have most of #ElizabethPeters #AmeliaPeabody detective series, so started it from book one. I’m also continuing my efforts to read Larry McMurtry’s entire works. I enjoyed Star y Abrams new detective series situated in the Supreme Court as well.

$100M bribe for China

I follow with interest the process over the former head of the FTX crypto exchange Sam Bankman-Fried. It’s like watching an interesting detective series.

Sam’s former girlfriend Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, which is the company receiving billions from FTX, was heard in court.

Caroline claims Sam paid a $100M bribe to the Chinese government for releasing frozen assets.

And I’m faced with a moral rather than legal dilemma.

Imagine, you have a billion dollars frozen in China. The funds belong to the customers. And then there’s the opportunity to release them by paying a huge bribe. Legally, it is certainly a crime. To give or take bribes are immoral and punishable.

I don’t know what I’d do if I was Sam.

The easiest thing to say is, "I always follow the law". It really is. But what to do in this particular situation? On the one hand there is the violation of the law, and the related problems, on the other hand there is the money of the clients who have trusted you. What will you choose?

I can’t answer that.

However, in any case, a bribe given for the best of moral reasons is still a bribe in this particular episode, it is left to Sam to feel sympathy for his decision.

I hope none of us have that dilemma.

My May 2023 books read. I’ve been trying to finish up a few series I’ve started, mostly detective series like Craig Johnson’s Longmire books, now caught up except for the one due out this fall; Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael series which I started eons ago and finally finished; and Elizabeth Peters’ Vicky Bliss series which was new to me, but I liked Peters’ Amelia Peabody Egyptologist/detective series; and Aaron Elkins’ Gideon Oliver forensic anthropologist series. Most thought-provoking was. Umberto Eco’s The Island of the Day Before.
