Kembali Raih Digital Government Award. Kemenkumham jadi Kementerian Terbaik dalam Penerapan SPBE

Jakarta - Kementerian Hukum dan HAM (Kemenkumham) kembali meraih Digital Government Award Sistem Pemerintahan Berbasis Elektronik (SPBE) Summit tahun 2024. Kemenkumham menjadi yang terbaik dalam Penerapan Sistem Pemerintahan Berbasis Elektronik untuk kategori Kementerian.

Penghargaan ini diterima Kemenkumham atas penerapan SPBE di Kemenkumham selama tahun 2023. Penghargaan tersebut diumumkan pada kegiatan SPBE Summit 2024 yang dipimpin langsung oleh Presiden Joko Widodo, di Istana Negara, Senin (27/05/2024).

Ini menjadi kali kedua Kemenkumham mendapatkan penghargaan penerapan SPBE, setelah sebelumnya menerima penghargaan serupa pada SPBE Summit 2023.

Sekretaris Jenderal Kemenkumham, Andap Budhi Revianto, mengatakan Kemenkumham telah menerapkan pelayanan publik berbasis digital untuk memudahkan masyarakat mendapatkan berbagai pelayanan yang ada.

Ia menjelaskan, saat ini telah tersedia beragam pelayanan digital yang dapat dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat, mulai dari aplikasi paspor, pendaftaran dan pencatatan kekayaan intelektual, konsultasi hukum, pengaduan HAM, layanan administrasi hukum umum, hingga pelayanan pemasyarakatan.

“Masyarakat lebih mudah mengakses pelayanan di Kemenkumham. Pelayanan tidak lagi terbatas pada ruang kantor, tetapi bisa dimanfaatkan di mana saja masyarakat berada. Cukup dengan handphone dan akses internet,” ucap Andap.

Andap menjelaskan, setidaknya terdapat delapan aspek SPBE yang terus ditingkatkan oleh Kemenkumham, yaitu kualitas kebijakan internal, perencanaan strategis, sistem TIK, inovasi dan aplikasi, manajemen SPBE, audit TIK,  layanan publik elektronik, dan layanan administrasi pemerintahan elektronik.

Dari tahun ke tahun indeks SPBE Kemenkumham telah menunjukkan tren positif. Pada tahun 2019, indeks SPBE Kemenkumham berada di titik 3,18 dari nilai maksimal 5. Selanjutnya, pada tahun 2021 mengalami peningkatan di nilai 3,68. Dan terbaru pada GDA 2024 Kemenkumham mendapatkan indeks 4,21 dengan predikat “Memuaskan”. Kemenkumham bahkan mencatatkan nilai maksimum 5.00 poin pada aspek layanan publik berbasis elektronik dan layanan administrasi pemerintahan berbasis elektronik.

“Teknologi digital terus berkembang. Karena itu Kemenkumham juga terus memperbaiki berbagai aspek pelayanan digital agar masyarakat semakin nyaman dan percaya terhadap pelayanan Kemenkumham,” ucapnya.

Penyelenggaraan SPBE di Kemenkumham yang baik, lanjutnya, sangat ditentukan oleh komitmen pimpinan, khususnya Menteri Hukum dan Hak Asasi Manusia (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly, serta kolaborasi antar unit kerja. Andap berkomitmen mengawal SPBE Kemenkumham menjadi lebih berkualitas.

“Kesuksesan Kemenkumham meraih penghargaan DGA 2 (dua) tahun berturut-turut tidak lepas dari komitmen pimpinan, khususnya Menkumham, dan kolaborasi seluruh unit kerja untuk terus meningkatkan kepuasan layanan publik melalui optimalisasi penyelenggaraan SPBE sehingga layanan Kemenkumham menjadi lebih cepat, mudah diakses, dan lebih transparan,” ungkap Andap.

Untuk diketahui, DGA merupakan bentuk apresiasi yang diberikan oleh KemenPAN RB kepada Instansi Pusat dan Pemerintah Daerah (IPPD) yang telah menyelenggarakan SPBE. Pada tahun 2024, DGA diberikan kepada 65 (enam puluh lima) dari 621 (enam ratus dua puluh satu) IPPD.

W&H, Miraclon, Apex International & Tesa organize packaging summit

Four prominent players in the packaging printing domain – Windmoller & Holscher (W&H), Miraclon, Apex International, and Tesa – joined forces to organize a conference on packaging, with a special emphasis on flexographic printing. The event at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ahmedabad on May 3 drew stakeholders from across the flexible packaging value chain and addressed key themes, including cost integration, efficiency, and sustainability in packaging.

Anuj Sahni, sales & marketing director at W&H, commenced the proceedings with a welcome address, emphasizing the industry's focus on sustainability and the complementary nature of flexographic and gravure printing technologies. Sahni stressed the importance of flexible packaging converters adapting to customer demands, advocating for a versatile approach that incorporates both flexo and gravure technologies.

Sunil Kumar, technical sales consultant at W&H, delved into the integration of efficiencies with sustainability, highlighting technical aspects such as barrier films and varnishes. Kumar showcased W&H's solutions, including EASY-COL, a fully integrated on-press color management system, and Vision, an integrated web monitoring and inspection system.

Mahesh Mense, sales manager – Indian Peninsula, Apex International, discussed trends and innovations in flexographic printing, emphasizing advancements in press technology, plates, aniloxes, tapes, and inks. Mense talked about the evolution of Apex International’s GTT anilox technology, which was launched 12 years ago. He touched upon the advantage that GTT has over conventional anilox. GTT offers advantages such as consistency and cost efficiencies. A major advantage of GTT technology is in the form of ink wastage and longevity of doctor blades, he said.

Hersh Lulla, marketing manager - Asia Pacific Region at Miraclon, provided insights into developments in flexo printing, emphasizing the importance of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Lulla also highlighted Miraclon's Flexcel NX digital platemaking system.

Stephanie Lee of Tesa discussed Tesa Softprint plate mounting tapes for flexographic printing, outlining their benefits such as fast job preparation, easy demounting, and adaptability to different climate conditions. Lee shared about Tesa's participation in drupa 2024, a leading trade fair for printing technologies.

The summit provided a platform for industry leaders to exchange insights and strategies aimed at advancing efficiency and sustainability in packaging, reaffirming the commitment of W&H, Miraclon, Apex International, and Tesa to driving innovation in the flexographic printing ecosystem.

Exploring Generation Z Consumers’ Attitudes towards Sustainable Fashion and Marketing Activities regarding Sustainable Fashion - Younan Liu & Ye Hei

Recently, the fashion industry has demonstrated a strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues. The sustainable fashion industry has enormous potential, and practical products are attracting Generation Z's environmentally conscious buyers. In the meantime, Gen Z customers have intrigued researchers' interest due to their enormous utilization potential.

In recent years, one of the primary key words in the fashion industry's development has been "sustainable development." According to Vogue Business's analysis of ten fashion industry behemoths' annual reports, the words "sustainable", "sustainable", "environment", and "environmental" appear on at least every four pages in the company's 2018 annual report. It is more than six times what it was twelve years ago.

The findings indicate that Gen Z consumers prefer products designed by brands with a distinct brand identity and distinctive highlights that are both practical and sustainable. For sustainable fashion brands to reach Gen Z consumers, branded digital marketing and branded content advertising are pivotal.

From a corporate standpoint, sustainable consumption is still very beneficial for society and presents lucrative economic opportunities. According to current estimates, the fashion industry is worth around $2.4 trillion. There is a prediction that the industry will see continued growth in the next years.  On August 23, 2019, at the G7 Summit, 32 global fashion and textile giants, including Kering, Chanel, Hermès, H&M, and Zara, signed a historic "Fashion Pact" that would ensure that sustainable development is strongly supported in the chain's and firms' everyday operations ("The Fashion Pact-The Fashion Pact", 2021). As a result, sustainable fashion marketing has gained prominence. 

Sustainable fashion is referred to as a subset of the slow fashion movement. Sustainable fashion is not the opposite of fast fashion, as the slow fashion ideology is oriented on environmental concerns.  In the 1960s, sustainable fashion made its first appearance. At that time, customers became aware of the clothes manufacturing industry's environmental impact and pressured the industry to improve its operations. 

Another issue is that sustainable fashion brands are more expensive than fast fashion brands (Henninger, Alevizou & Oates, 2016). Environmentally friendly materials are the decisive criteria. Even if consumers have a favorable attitude toward sustainability, they may not accept the price premium connected with apparel.

Looking at this last point made in this dissertation - A lot of new sustainable and slow fashion brands do come at a higher price tag. But much of Gen Z want to shop sustainably but cannot afford these brands, therefore, second hand clothing from charity shops and second hand online websites.

ShinMaywa announces inaugural flight of the unmanned amphibious 'XU-M' aircraft

On September 5, ShinMaywa Industries of Japan announced the inaugural flight of its XU-M unmanned seaplane. The company stated that the inaugural flight took place on August 26.

The XU-M (EXperimental Unmanned - Marine type) is a unmanned aerial vehicle based on amphibious technology developed by ShinMaywa. It was developed with the objective of promoting research related to the sensing and control of remotely operated amphibious aircraft. The fixed-wing drone is driven by two electric motors and has a cruising speed of 60 km/h. The aircraft is 3m long, 4m wide and 0.9m high. The aircraft built with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has an operating weight of less than 25kg.

While the XU-M is a test aircraft, ShinMaywa will design the aircraft and provide services according to customer requirements, with the XU-M being able to form the basis for larger projects of unmanned amphibious aircraft.

ShinMaywa also developed an XU-S unmanned fixed-wing aerial vehicle, which has long-lasting flight capacity. Over the years it has been used for radio propagation tests, environmental observation and marine litter survey. This battery-powered drone is driven by two propellers in the tail.

The Japanese manufacturer ShinMaywa produces the large manned amphibious aircraft US-2, currently operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The aircraft was previously considered by the Indian Navy, for which ShinMaywa partnered with Mahindra Defence. ShinMaywa also expressed its willingness to offer US-2 for a U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) requirement for an amphibious aircraft.

XU-M combines the technologies used in US-2 and XU-S. On September 2, the XU-M was presented during the "1st Drone Summit" held in the city of Kobe. The drone took off from the water and performed a four-minute flight demonstration. The XU-M made two automatic curves in eight before landing on the water.

On Healing and Of Time

In general, recovery was never a linear thing. There were ups and downs like mountain ranges, spikes of growth followed by plummeting pitfalls of fear and relapse. Eventually, these ranges smoothed to foothills, to rolling waves of general trends of ups and downs. Over time, they would be eroded down to a general plateau. There would always be small ridges, things could shift and change that opened up a chasm one wasn’t aware had always been lurking beneath, but generally, time healed all things.

Red was a firm believer in that fact, actually. Both in time’s place as a panacea for all that could be healed, and in its inerrant nonliniarity. Recovery, and time itself, actually, now that he had been thrown back into a place he recognized in the faint edges of his memory as paper-and-ink instead of rock and stone, blood and breath.

Red couldn’t remember what it was he was healing from, exactly. He knew that his chest ached on lonely nights, that despite its almost loving call upward the summit of Coronet had winds that bit him deeper than others on snowy days. That his body fully rejected foods for the first six months that he was here that had even trace amounts of meat. Grief, he knew he carried grief. But he didn’t know who or what he was mourning. If it had anything to do with his companion’s rough shape, or his missing digits on either hand, the scarring of frostbite along his body. But as certain as time’s continual march on, the jagged edges of those empty holes in his memories gradually smoothed over, easing their fangs out of the flesh of his heart. And while the holes did not close, the mothim-eaten fabric of his own history, it didn’t hurt as badly as it did when he woke up in the dry grasses of the Highlands.

Those first few nights ducking and weaving out of pokemon’s sights, protecting his and his partners battered and bruised bodies from further attacks were distant to him now. No longer out and alone, screaming out over things he couldn’t even start to understand or piece together. That ache, that emptiness, felt ever distant as the year marched on, and as he thought on the prospect of facing another after another.

Home, he felt like, was a concept he hadn’t known before he came here. Red couldn’t say for certain, had no way of knowing that before he was cast into Hisui’s grasp that he had been drifting yet again from the ones he loved. He couldn’t recall that he hadn’t felt like Pallet Town was home in well over a decade. Or that the Ursaringtrap of Mount Silver no longer carried its sickening siren song that dragged him up to the summit to hide away, no longer a home in its own twisted way. But now, among friends, among some he would tentatively call family, he felt at ease. Like some wound almost a lifetime in the making was finally turning from a gaping maw in his flesh to a gnarled and knotted scar, the origins of which he could no longer place.

Red thumbed over the space where his left ring finger would be, that raised and twisted skin, and didn’t resent its absence. This body was his, and this land was his home. Among the people of Hisui, of the Diamond Clan, he had forged a home by choice, and for the first time in his life (though he didn’t know it), he truly felt like he belonged.

Sometimes, there are things that the body remembers but the mind does not. The way it rejected his meals containing meat for the first half of the year he was here was an example. But so was the weight of whatever it was that had been eating away at him. But here, and now, Red’s body felt lighter. Not in weight, but in burden. A tension had begun to leave him as he found his place, as he and Pikachu both found their places in the world. Against the backdrop of Coronet, they felt so small, but like the world was built for them and them alone. And for the first time both in working memory and in non-working memory, the march of time felt not like a race, but a reward.

There was nothing to fight against, no great horror to outrun. His past was ahead of him and his future behind, and he had made peace in that fact. The idea of facing a future, an entire life here? Among people who he had grown to love, a land he was always passionate for even in the burnt edges of what was left of his memory? It felt like a blessing. Like he had been trapped as a caged animal and was finally set free. Up here, not far from the domain of Lord Electrode, he felt like he was here on purpose, by choice.

It all really came down to choice, didn’t it? He chose to stay with the Diamond Clan when the offer was extended to him. He chose to continue on day by day. Chose to ambassador with the Galaxy Team, as strange as they were. It came down to choice, to healing, and to growth.

Red reached into his satchel, retrieving a faintly glowing green stone that sat comfortably in his palm. It was about choice, and growth. Choosing when and how to grow, and change. Embracing the change that you wanted, that came along with the march of time. He turned the stone over in his hand a few times, watching the way the dying sunlight shone through its translucent surface, catching in a way that made its inner thunderbolt shine just a little more vibrantly. Choice and growth.

Beside him, Pikachu dozed. The partner he’d been through all of this with, all that he remembered and all that he didn’t. Time marched on, and they would be carried by it together, in the end. He placed the stone upon a bare patch of earth in front of his companion, who sleepily opened his eyes. Pikachu looked, after stretching lazily, from the stone before him, and back up to his partner.

It was all about choice, and growth.

25 - Trap

Summary: A week after Y/n almost brought Clarke home, her father and Abby head to Polis for a Summit Delegation, and send her and the group to Mount Weather, where the rest of Farm Station are being held. Azgeda attacks the mountain, leading to the deaths of 37 people.

In the week since you almost found Clarke, you were stuck with inventory checks. Of course, when that wasn’t happening you were arguing the recent decision to put the people of farm station who didn’t fit into Arkadia into Mount Weather. It was a stupid decision in itself, but apparently only you and Bellamy could see that.

Today, however, was the day that you would be travelling to Mount Weather with the others, a list of things to fix and do from Abby. You spent the ride lost in your thoughts about the outcome of the Summit. Clarke was there, in Polis, and you knew you could help with the delegation. It barely registered for you that you had arrived, only noticing when you heard the metal creaking open.

You stepped out, noticing Bellamy staring off into the forest. Walking up to him, you put a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. “Hey,” You said. “What’s going on up in that pretty little brain of yours?”

“The delegation; I should be there. We both should.”

“I know, Bell. But I’m sure everything will be fine by the time they get back, and maybe Clarke will be with them when they do.” You assured him. “It just sucks that my dad thinks he can teach me a lesson by benching me. Him of all people should know that it won’t work,”

You smiled at your boyfriend, who was chuckling at your words. He moved past you to grab one of the bags filled with gear to fix up Mount Weather, handing it to you with a kiss to the cheek before grabbing his own. As you walked up to the doors of Mount Weather with Bellamy and Octavia on either side of you, Raven told Gina about how she saved Sinclair back on the Ark, although you weren’t really listening.

Hers and Gina’s words faded as you closed in on the mess hall, hearing the music, chatter, and clanging of utensils against plates. You tensed, the familiarity of it all reminding you of the previous inhabitants of the mountain and what they did to get to the ground. Pike welcomed you, inviting you to join him and the others. You knew you would never live comfortably in these halls, not like them.

“Someone’s made themselves at home,” Raven commented.

Octavia swept her eyes across the room before speaking. “There must be 30 of them in here,”

“36, but the more, the merrier,” Pike said, shaking Bellamy’s hand.

“36? Wow, the grounders are gonna think we moved in,” You commented sardonically. The thought alone of them living here permanently scared you, knowing that it could possibly cause a war in itself with the grounders. Again.

Bellamy gave you a pointed look as Pike spoke. “Well, there was no room at the inn.”

Octavia spoke once again and Bellamy cut her off with a stern look, leading her to hand ehr bag to Raven and leave the mountain. You were tempted to follow her, but Sinclair came through one of the doors and caught your attention.

“Reyes, you’re 3 hours late,” Sinclair reprimanded. “We’ve got no power to medical, fluctuations on levels 2 and 3, and blown fuses all over the place. Get on it.”

“You can do no wrong, huh?” Gina commented lightly as Raven walked away, you and Gina following after her to help with the electrical issues. You could barely fix a few of the blown fuses when Pike radioed Sinclair and called off fixing the power, saying they were needed back in the mess hall.

“Why the hell are they calling us off?” Raven asked. “I’ve got tripped circuits all over the grid.”

“Oh, whatever it is, it supersedes fixing the power problem.”

As soon as you were in the mess hall with the others, Bellamy spoke. “Alright, listen up. If we want to get to Polis before the attack, we have to move.”

“I’m sorry, attack?” You shook your head, not believing what you were hearing.

“Attack? Do we have confirmation of that?” Sinclair asked.

“We radioed, but no answer.”

“They may already be dead, for all we know,” Pike said, striking a chord. “And if they are, we need to be ready to respond.”

“Don’t make this about the missiles,” Sinclair told him.

“This is about survival,” Pike argued. “We don’t have the numbers, but the missiles in this mountain even the playing field, and you know I’m right.”

“Even if I did agree with you, we still don’t have the launch codes.”

“No, but we have me,” Raven spoke up.

At that point you didn’t bother to listen anymore, instead turning to Bellamy to see what he thought about using the missiles. He was looking at Raven, however, and you couldn’t read his face. He almost seemed okay with using the missiles, as if they didn’t almost kill his sister. Raven and Sinclair walked over to the entrance with Gina, waiting for you to join them.

Bellamy moved over to you and spoke. “You should stay here with them,”

“Bellamy, I’ve already decided. I’m going.” You told him, watching as he formed a response.

“No, you’re not.”

“Yes, I am, Bellamy! My dad is in Polis, if he gets hurt because of this, I need to be there.” You persisted. “And if you get hurt, then what am I gonna do?”

“That’s exactly why you can’t go. I need to keep you safe,” Bellamy’s eyes showed you that he wouldn’t be giving up any time soon. You weren’t either, but you knew this would get you both nowhere.

“Fine, I’ll stay. But I will be groveling and complaining that I didn’t go the entire time.” Bellamy laughed and pulled you into his arms, giving you a kiss. “Just, don’t do anything too stupidly heroic, please.”

“Got it, averagely stupid heroic.” You laughed and pulled him into a tight hug before parting ways. You towards Sinclair, Raven, and Gina, Bellamy in the opposite direction. You followed the trio to level 7, where the command center is, hoping to find the codes in there. After hours of you trying to make sense of the coding in the silent comms room, Raven spoke to herself.

“Damn it,”

“What happened to that Raven Reyes confidence?” Sinclair asked from behind her, eyes glued to the screen.

“It’s a 12-digit code, there are a trillion combinations.” Raven said frustratedly. “It’s gonna take me a minute.”

You looked up from your screen across from Gina as she did, glancing at the angry woman and thinking over a few different ways you could find the code. “Gina, Y/n, what do you got?”

“Don’t look at us, we’re just grunts.”

“Oh, come one, guys. It’s gonna be dark soon.” Sinclair said, pacing lightly. “We’re working analog, we’re working digital. What are we missing?”

“How is the president going to remember a number that long?” Gina questioned.

You thought about Dante and how old he was, knowing that there was no possible way for him to remember that long of a number for too long. “Not that well, he was old.”

“Wanna bet he wrote it down somewhere?”

“Oh, come on.” Raven turned around. “That’s like setting the launch codes to all zeros.”

“And yet, it’s better than anything we’ve come up with.” Sinclair countered.

“Y/n and I will check the president’s office.” You stood and grabbed a walkie from beside you as Sinclair tossed one to Gina.

“We’ll keep working the tech angle. Hopefully one of us will get lucky.”

As you walked down the hall to the president’s office with Gina, you spotted something on the end of the hall. A sign, with an arrow pointing to the left that read ‘record’s room’.

“Hey, Gina, there’s a records room down the hall. I think I’m gonna check it out, see what I can find.” You told her as you stopped at the president’s office door.

“Sure, I’ll see what I can find in here,” She nodded towards the office. “Just keep your radio on channel 5, holler if you need me.”

You nodded and continued down the hall, following the path to the record room, pulling open the door to reveal floor to ceiling filing cabinets, lining the walls and in the middle. You studied them, seeing that each drawer was dated with the year. You went to the first cabinet to your left, near the door, seeing it was dated 2188, which was last year.

Pulling the drawer open, you took the files from it and placed them on the ground, sitting with them to get a little more comfortable. You flipped through each file carefully, and when it didn’t give you any useful information, you put it on the other side of you and started with a new one. Your radio was sitting right in front of the filing cabinet you were sitting in front of, for easier access.

By the time you’d poured over most of the thick files in the first drawer, your radio cut in. “Gina to Raven, come in.”

“Go for Raven,”

“I’ve got nothing.” Gina sighed. “No launch codes. I guess our luck is still holding.”

“Same here,” You sighed. “You’d think a records room would keep track of the launch code, but it’s all just population count and radiation tolerance.”

Your radio crackled and Raven’s voice came through. “Okay. Keep looking, we’ll do the same.”

You set your radio back where it was when it crackled again, a muffled scream passing through it. Raven called out for Gina and you did, too. When Gina didn’t respond, you pushed the heavy file off of your laps and got up from your position, hurrying back down the hall to the president’s office. The hallway had never felt as long as it did now, feeling like centuries had passed before you reached the glass doors.

As soon as you were in front of them, you made eye contact with a grounder in white war paint, making the connection in your head moments before he attacked you. Ice Nation’s attack. It wasn’t Polis they were going after, it was Mount Weather. Once you finished your thought, he charged at you with a bloody knife.

You attempted to block his hit as best as you could without taking the time to pull out your sword, and he missed his target, hitting your left shoulder instead. You screamed in pain, but that fueled your will to fight even further. He removed the blade from you and you fell to the floor, but as he leant over you to finish you off, he left himself open for an attack.

You pulled your leg up and smashed it into his groin, watching him fall as you struggled to sit up. You pulled your dagger from your holder and got his shoulder as well, pulling it out and leaning forward to hit him in the side of the head with your elbow. He takes the blow and stands after a few moments, looking over at the desk and taking off down the hall. You followed his line of sight and gasped, seeing Gina slumped onto the desk with blood pouring from her mouth.

“Gina!” You rush over to your friend, pulling her up to see her shirt stained red. “Oh my God, Gina. What the hell happened?”

“The code, it’s on his arm.” She said slowly. You knew what she was talking about, but only gained a full perspective when you looked at the timer on the desk.

Today’s train is the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, the “World’s First Rollercoaster”, seen here in a ca. 1895 photograph by William H. Rau (1855-1920). This railway was originally built in 1828 by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company to transport coal between the company’s mines in Summit Hill and their transport center in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. 

This railway operated between two mountain summits, Mount Pisgah and Mount Jefferson, and relied on a combination of animal power and gravity to transport cars and freight between these two terminals. In 1846, animal power was replaced by two two steam-powered funicular systems to haul the cars uphill, but travel downhill continued to rely on the power of gravity.

In 1872, the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company completed a tunnel that allowed for a faster, more efficient line of railway travel. But the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway continued to operate for thrill-seeking human cargo, who had begun riding this route as early as 1827 (making this not just the first rollercoaster, but the first operational U.S. railway of any substantial length to carry paying passengers).  By 1874, the railway was being operated by the Central Railroad of New Jersey as a tourist attraction, selling 80-minute, 18-mile rides to approximately 35,000 tourists each year for the cost of $1. The thrill ride was sold to the newly formed Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway Company in 1929, who operated it until 1932, when it was closed due to financial strain caused by the Great Depression.
