I have physical media, period. I listen to it 24/7. I hot-rodded an iPod (the one with the better audio processor, 5th Gen original iPod) with an SD card reader instead of a hard drive. In it is a 256GB SD card with everything I have in digital form, music-wise, which includes my tube-flavored turntable rips of LPs and 45s. It plays 24/7 through an AM-Radio Transmitter, as my own little radio station. I soldered the transmitter together in an afternoon from a kit. It has up to 5 mile range, in an ideal setting.

There are myriad ways of preserving physical media, and transferring it into digital form is a great way to keep vinyl in good shape. Vinyl degrades with each play, it is imperceptible in the moment, but over time, playing a record too many times will literally wear-out the grooves. Ask me how I know.

I have also hung onto all those Maxell UDXL-II cassette MIX TAPES I made from 1982 on into the early 2000s. They still sound great! I'm transferring them to digital as well, so even my mixtapes from forever ago will still be accessible.

I've already ripped and let go of most of the CDs I bought, I'm holding onto a few choice audiophile ones, the series of RCA Living Stereo classical CDs where they actually REBUILT the ORIGINAL TAPE MACHINES to make the transfers. My vinyl transfers sound like vinyl. I tweak the input volume in Audacity to the hotter side, which yields the right presence when you're listening to the digital file. My transfer of Zep IV knocks the shit outa the official digital file...the vocals and drums especially have more presence in the vinyl transfer.

I still have all the 45s I bought as a kid and early teen. They're getting digitized as well. When some of them play over the AM transmitter, it's 50 years ago again. Something about that sound hits me harder than anything else.

There's lots of ways to keep and have physical media! It's up to you to seek it out! There are still countless records for sale on eBay. Hang onto whatever your particular preferred media is. Digitize it and copy it so you have backup.

Have fun with it. That's really part of it...it gives your OCD kid something to do and obsess on. lulz. I'm really stoked that when I get to Berkeley, there is Amoeba Records and Rasputin, both on Telegraph. Short drive, park in public garage.
