Looking back to what have past, to find me filled with endless gratefulness for all the revolutionary events I have been through, owing it the durable human being I am right now.

I admit to all the mistakes I made; especially those huge and terrible ones that almost ended my life. I admit to all my missteps, setbacks and clumsiness. I admit to being lost, and completely directionales; spending years trying to find who the hell I am and navigate through life.

The upper image is based off of an ink painting of Titan 1 done by Martin Smith, an Architect, who would later create art for the Wizard of Oz. I chose to create one of my images based off of Smith’s ink portrait because I love the beautiful flowing painterly quality of his piece especially as it is used to portray something very industrial in nature. Smith uses negative space and value to highlight the forms. He also uses certain values in particular areas and proportions to create balance and visual movement drawing the viewers eye throughout the piece. Smith uses a large amount of dark in the lower section of the drawing to indicate the underground portions. He designs the actual forms of the underground structure to be overall light in value thus the darkness highlights their forms. Smith creates the edges of this dark void very consciously using organic strokes. This creates an interesting softer shape contrasting with the geometric nature of some of the forms. Most of the upper portion of the piece being light balances the darkness of the void.  He brings in a similar value at the very top of the painting and in whisps around the vertical structure and in its shadow moving the viewers eye around the piece via the dark hue.

Smith surrounds the vertical structure with curved whisps of a value slightly darker than the surrounding clouds. This highlights the missile. The directionallity of the strokes emphasizes its relative height and creates a sense of power, while the organic shapes prevent it from feeling menacing or morally incorrect.

My second diagram is based off an image of DMJM’s One Park Plaza office that Cayer shared. The image uses value and negative space to create power. The building’s dark value, particularly near the top contrasts starkly with the light of the sky. The perspective creates a nearly mirrored shape between the light of the sidewalk contrasting with the dark of the building and the sky’s contrast with the dark of the building. This places the building sharply in the foreground of the image. Overall, the combined contrasting values, and sharply delineated space gives the building a somewhat overbearing sense of power. This was likely very intentional in both the design of the building and the composition of the picture. DMJM likely wanted to have a powerful, modern presence in the city, demonstrating their capabilities with a very simple form to potential clients and threatening potential competitors.
