the joy of doing simple admin tasks as part of a big research project is unmatched...
#spent a very happy six hours finding some 18th century newspapers i can sample for my dissertation#ended up having a big list of all the newspapers that could be relevant#w start and end dates for two thirds of them#also identified lots of the editors/publishers and the frequency with which they were published#and found which ones covered the dates i’m including in my sample#as well as tracking down which ones were available in the archives i have access to#literally soooooo fun. so fun#i WAS going to then read some of the newspapers and get started on the sampling process#but the admin took up too much time… i am not complaining though#another activity i love is compiling my bibliography and footnotes.#a fair few ppl in my cohort use stuff like endnote and easy bib but i always want to do it myself bc i am very particular about my footnotes#and i enjoy it so win/win#sorry ramble over.😎

it's a good thing conclave didn't waste any time on making the stories about catholic orders and their in-fighting. and probably i shouldn't either because i am not informed enough about it to go on at length. pls take all of this w a grain of salt.
but i know in my heart of hearts that aldo bellini is a progressive liberal jesuit, the holy father's specialest most progressive liberal italian-american jesuit.
look at him. look at his glasses. those are the glasses of a man who did his dissertation on reinterpreting loyola through a contemporary reformist lens. academic wunderkid. has sooo much beef w the editors of american jesuit weekly. possibly the events of conclave are occurring in a better more beautiful world where aldo bellini is the editor of american jesuit weekly.
the late holy father for sure was a progressive jesuit also. vr pope francis coded. and low-key set him up as a successor. for a while, that seemed nearly a sure thing in some circles.
but there is the fact. well. the fact that everyone is tired, done and tired of jesuits, progressive or otherwise.
this among other factors meant he couldn't consider him the best option, besides whatever character judgement and uncanny machievallien prediction he came up with.
adeyemi has that benedictine swag which makes his potential election particularly seem like a breath of fresh air + reliable + lots of influence. tremblay is giving dominican drip and dominican corruption. and dominican flop. his nespresso machine? it's giving dominican also.
tedesco has to be an italian-founded order member. most hypocrital salesian of all times maybe?? this is unrelated to the fact that i was nearly enrolled in a salesian primary school and the weirdly panopticon-ish playground didn't pass the vibe check. and also because: consider tedesco rising in the ranks of an order created to help migrant workers...someone kick him in the head for me pls.
who even knows about benítez. i want to say franciscan but that might be just too on the nose. cistercian?? honestly it would work well if he is also without affiliation.
this lens does make lawrence's homily being interpreted as a campaign speech more understandable (and particularly funny).
because, as far as anyone can tell, he's fully running as an independent candidate. zero platform besides - if i fuck up i'll apologize and do better and be held accountable, which is more than any of you probably would.
and because he stands alone, he can be held accountable. he can belong to all, and not one faction only. as far as anyone can tell, he's burning bridges with bellini and rocking the status quo.
he is speaking to/from a place of frustration with institutional inertia and factionalism, he is using his position as dean to bravely promote a platform for internal change in the curia, he is offering doubt as an alternative to certainty, he is pulling an absolute wildcard move.
pity he didn't mean it.
pity the the only order lawrence is interested in joining is the most hardcore discalced carmelite experience possible.
you know how some people look into luxurious real estate listings like it's porn? that's lawrence w tiny monasteries. the sort of minuscule organization with not enough people for management to be necessary. too small for politics. as close to erasure as you can get in this world: no need to be useful.
serving god by existing only to meditate on him. a narrow slant of a life, at that. barely taking up space, barely casting a shadow.
his favorite is a decrepit wreck of a place in the middle of southern spain, nowhere. no wifi no speaking aloud no possessions. no shoes no food. no nothing, only prayer. and a big big sky overhead.
maybe that will fix his issues with reaching god. if that doesn't work he'll probably just wander into the tabernas desert and become an hermit. works for some people, supposedly; plenty of order founders seem to believe so, anyway.
#conclave#sabbadin also gives jesuit. imo#i can't begin to guess at ray o'malley. some really niche order no one's heard about or he's also unaffiliated#i do think that. perhaps. unfortunately. everyone thinks lawrence is pulling another curve ball of a political move.#so even if he does join an order post canon#that reputation will proceed him. no abbot will believe this political mastermind if he says he wants to set aside wordly matters#he just won't get that spiritual job interview acceptance.#guy who is cursed to remain orderless. to answer to his own discernment and be an agent in the world. forced to try and try again#thomas lawrence#aldo bellini#vincent benítez#goffredo tedesco#joseph tremblay#conclave spoilers

Why In The World Online Dissertation Editing Services Are Valuable?

Completing a dissertation is a significant milestone in an academic journey, marking the culmination of years of research and hard work. However, to make sure that your dissertation reaches its full potential and meets the highest standards of academic excellence, the editing process plays a crucial role. Dissertation editing involves thorough review, refinement, and enhancement of the content, structure, and language of the paper. While some students may attempt to self-edit their work, it is often advantageous to seek professional assistance from online dissertation editing services. In this article, we will explore the value of utilizing online dissertation editing services, with a specific focus on BookMyEssay Dissertation Editing Service and its team of expert Dissertation Editors.
Specialized Expertise
One of the primary reasons why online dissertation editing services, like BookMyEssay's, are invaluable is the access to specialized expertise. Dissertation Editors at BookMyEssay possess advanced degrees in various disciplines, making them well-equipped to understand the intricacies of academic writing. Their expertise enables them to identify gaps in the research, enhance the logical flow of the content, and ensure adherence to the specific guidelines of the respective educational institutions. Having a professional with an objective perspective scrutinize your dissertation can significantly improve its overall quality.
Language Proficiency
For many students, English may not be their first language, and crafting a dissertation with flawless English can be challenging. Grammatical errors, improper sentence structure, and punctuation mistakes can hinder the communication of ideas effectively. Online dissertation editing services, such as BookMyEssay's, provide assistance from native English speakers who are adept at refining the language to ensure clarity and coherence. By availing of these services, non-native English speakers can present their research with confidence and avoid any language-related shortcomings.
Plagiarism Check
Plagiarism is a serious academic offense that can lead to severe consequences. It is essential to ensure that your dissertation is entirely original and properly cited. Online dissertation editing writing services often include plagiarism checks to identify any unintentional instances of plagiarism and provide suggestions to rectify them. BookMyEssay's Dissertation Editing Service employs sophisticated plagiarism detection tools to guarantee the authenticity of your work, ensuring that your dissertation is entirely plagiarism-free.
Time-Saving and Efficiency
The dissertation writing process is time-consuming, and editing can be even more demanding. By outsourcing the editing task to professionals, students can save valuable time and focus on other aspects of their academic and personal life. Online services like BookMyEssay offer prompt turnaround times, allowing students to meet tight submission deadlines without compromising the quality of their work.
Confidentiality and Privacy
Online dissertation editing services prioritize the confidentiality and privacy of their clients. Reputed services, such as BookMyEssay, follow strict data protection protocols, ensuring that your dissertation and personal information remain secure. This provides students with peace of mind, knowing that their work is in safe hands.
Conclusion
In conclusion, online dissertation editing services, particularly BookMyEssay Dissertation Editing Service, offer substantial value to students pursuing higher education. The specialized expertise, language proficiency, plagiarism checks, time-saving efficiency, and commitment to confidentiality make these services indispensable in the journey towards producing a top-notch dissertation. So, if you are on the path to completing your dissertation, consider harnessing the advantages of professional editing to elevate your work to the next level.

We're binging Stargate: Atlantis and I'm obsessed by how this mission must be the worst kept secret in certain circles of academia. Like, dozens of the most prominent people in fields that start with xeno- and astro- have simultaneously vacated their positions.
And this is no sabbatical! Labs are being shut down, grad students farmed out to other advisors. Co-authors are getting terse emails like "I can't finish the revisions on this. You do it. Go ahead and take first author too."
And then six months later it happens to another bunch of scientists? This is like when the editor of Astounding magazine found out about the Manhattan Project because of all the readers changing their addresses to Los Alamos.
(I also feel bad for the poor schmuck just trying to finish their doctoral dissertation who's had two advisors up and disappear on them already. They're practically sleeping at the foot of their third advisor's bed like a dog with abandonment issues.)

You have questions! We might have answers.
What is this collection?
As Maria puts it: this collection is a critical look at some of the things that we, the editors, think have made CQL such a hit around the world. Of course, part of that success comes from the webnovel MDZS and the show CQL themselves—we love the characters, the mystery, and the drama, who doesn’t?! However, the authors in our book also look at topics like translating danmei (both officially and unofficially), adapting danmei for new audiences, and interacting with fandoms and fanworks. The larger argument of the book is that all of these things played a huge role in CQL’s visibility and success, and we wanted to start making those moving pieces visible, especially for audiences who mainly watched CQL in translation.
You keep using the word “academic”—what does that mean, exactly?
Maria: Ok, not to get pedantic here, but this actually touches on some things that I’m really excited about for the book. Traditionally, academic work is written by people who have a deep expertise in the subject (signified by having a PhD and doing specific kinds of research), and then the work itself is peer-reviewed (i.e., sent to other experts in the field for them to evaluate whether it’s sound, original, and interesting enough to publish, without knowing who wrote it). And both of these things are true about our book—our authors have deep knowledge and the book was peer reviewed—but also. We specifically asked for chapters from younger scholars and from fans who also have deep knowledge about topics that academia doesn’t always know or value enough, and we include an interview from the fan-translator K. who did the Exiled Rebels translation. So the hope is that: this book is academic, and also—more!
Who are you?
Yue studies adaptation, fantasy, and popular culture texts using a feminist lens. She wrote an early, influential article about danmei adaptations and also has a book about feminist adaptations of Chinese fantasy.
Maria studies fanworks, contemporary fantasy, and genre literature. She’s scrambling to finish her dissertation right now.
How were the chapter spotlights chosen?
Voluntarily! The concept of a small social media promo was kicked around by some of the contributors and those interested in the idea filled out a short interview with what they wanted to share. We'll be posting about 2 introductions and 2 spotlights a day for the next week or so!
Who's running this social media campaign anyway?
Not the publishers! A few enthusiastic collection contributors got together and, with the assistance of the editors, have put this promotion together. We do not in any way represent Peter Lang in an official capacity! We just worked hard and wanted to share. :)
Are you making any money off of royalties from this book?
LOL not even remotely
What about this promotion?
also no. alas
Where can I find this book?
You can find our listing on Peter Lang’s website here. As for other retailers, a quick search should turn us up!
How can I access this book if I cannot buy it from Peter Lang / [book retailer of choice]?
As collection editors and contributors who signed a legal agreement with Peter Lang, we have granted Peter Lang exclusive right and license to edit, adapt, publish, reproduce, distribute, display, and store our contributions, and we must cooperate fully with the Publisher if the Publisher believes a third party is infringing or is likely to infringe copyright in the contribution.
That being said, these are academic papers, which means that contributors may make copies of the contribution for classroom teaching use! (These copies may not be included in course pack material for onward sale by libraries and institutions). Of course, any linking, collection or aggregation of chapters from the same volume is strictly prohibited.

“Episode Seventeen - Memoirs of a Mini Mob Boss” – Life According to Spencer Robinavitch
Michael Robinavitch x wife reader x kids
Warning ⚠️: Spencer
Back from Hawaii, most kids were catching up on schoolwork, sleep, and screens.
Not Spencer.
At five years old, she had declared:
“It’s time to write my memoirs.”
---
Chapter One: Birth of a Legend
She set up shop at the kitchen table with her pink glitter notebook, six crayons, a juice box, and Kojo curled up at her feet like a loyal henchman.
“Grandma Diana,” she said seriously, “I need to borrow your typewriter.”
Diana blinked. “Sweetie, I haven’t owned one since 1995.”
“Ugh. Fine. I’ll write it the old-fashioned way—with scented markers.”
Her working title?
“The Doctor, The Dog, and The Dad Who Can’t Catch Me.”
Chapter topics included:
“The Time I Stole Daddy’s Pager”
“Kojo’s Belly Rub Schedule”
“That Day I Faked a Limp for Popsicles”
“Why Jake is Still on My Blacklist: A Dissertation”
Y/N read a few lines and nearly cried laughing. Michael looked over her shoulder and muttered, “I’m going to be roasted in crayon for eternity.”
---
Meanwhile: Alex the Mad Genius
At the local Science Fair, Alex was in his element. He wore his lab coat, goggles, and the kind of grin that meant: something might explode.
His project?
“Volcano Pressure and Lava Flow Under Simulated Stress: A Kid-Safe Demonstration.”
Narrator: It was not kid-safe.
By the time the judges arrived, he had accidentally launched part of the volcano model onto the ceiling tiles.
Y/N arrived mid-cleanup.
“Did it at least work?” she asked calmly.
Alex beamed. “It really worked.”
She just high-fived him. “You’re grounded, but I’m proud.”
---
Sawyer and the School Dance Plotline
Sawyer wasn’t thinking about boys or dresses. She was focused on recovering from her ankle injury and not falling behind in school.
Then one of the awkward beach boys from Hawaii, who somehow went to her school (because fate is petty), showed up at her locker with a carnation and stammered through an invite to the dance.
Sawyer was about to politely decline—until Spencer appeared out of nowhere, holding a clipboard and whispering, “Accept. It’ll make for a spicy chapter in my book.”
Sawyer rolled her eyes and said yes. The boy fainted (sort of). Spencer called it “good drama.”
---
Later That Week: Chaos as Usual
Spencer invited Dana, Princess, Dr. Langdon, and even Intern Vanessa over to the house under the guise of “book editors.”
She had a dramatic reading of her introduction while Kojo sat wearing reading glasses.
Michael walked into the living room just as she said, “My father was a brilliant doctor. But more importantly, he never found my secret cookie stash.”
Michael: “I knew it was you.”
Y/N? On the floor, crying laughing.
---
Final Scene: Bedtime Confession
That night, Michael tucked Spencer in. She curled into his side and looked up.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“Do you think my book will win an award?”
He smiled, brushing hair from her face. “It already has. Best comedy, best drama, and best daughter award—goes to you.”
Kojo barked once in agreement.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Peter Green, giant in Classics. He died this last Monday morning (9/16/24) at the ripe old age of 99. He was born the same year as both my parents.
Peter was not only a very fine scholar, but also a damn good writer--which isn't always true of historians. He wrote historical fiction (no, really, he did: The Laughter of Aphrodite, about Sappho, and Achilles, His Armor, about Alkibiades). And he wrote some quite excellent collections of essays: In the Shadow of the Parthenon and Classical Bearings. His Alexander to Actium--a monster book about the Hellenistic Age big enough to choke a mule--actually made money for U-Cal Press. Not common for academic books, especially of that size!
I have issues with Peter's take on Alexander, I'll be honest. In fact, it was his cheeky summary of Hephaistion as "Tall, handsome, spoilt, spiteful, overbearing and fundamentally stupid" that made the little Hephaistion sit up in my head and object: "I wasn't like that!"
And that launched a dissertation. So in a backhanded way, you can thank Peter for my work on Hephaistion.
But I want to tell you about the other Peter I knew, a genuinely helpful, friendly, and likable guy. He and his wife (Classicist) Carin Green were long-time friends of Gene Borza (my academic father) and Kathleen Pavelko (Gene's now-widow). Born in the UK, he had mid-century British Classicist training mixed with some very progressive politics that might surprise.
He also gave me the best (academic) edit job I've ever received, in now 25 years of publishing. Together with Gene, I gave a paper at the then-APA (now-SCS), which ended up becoming my first (co-authored) publication, "Some New Thoughts on the Death of Alexander the Great." Peter was there to hear, and came up after to congratulate us then quiz me about my psych background and the info I'd brought on grieving. Gene told him about the chapter in my dissertation on Alexander's mourning, and Peter said, "Send me that chapter" for Selecta Classica, of which he was editor. I warned it was long. (To the tune of 60 pages in manuscript!)
But I sent it. And he took it. Then did the edits (both academic and literary) himself. It was fantastic. I quibbled on two things. First, commas. Ha. But second, he insisted everything go back into Greek without some translations, contending anybody reading it would know the Greek. I objected. I lost. I still think that was a mistake, but it was also evidence of that mid-century Brit Classicist that assumed the only people reading it would be other Classicists.
But folks, he made that first (solo) article of mine so much better, forcing me to clarify problematic phrasing, elaborate where I'd been too brief, etc. And he did it with a light hand that allowed my own voice to come through. He became my model of How to Be A Good Academic Editor. When I edit today, I have him in mind.
Peter, thank you for all you've done, not just in print, but as a human being and mentor to young scholars, like me. I'll pour a little libation of good red wine in your memory.
With his passing goes the last of that generation of Macedoniasts.

GAYEST ARTHURIAN TEXT BRACKET ROUND 2:
propaganda:
Bisclavret:
- “Honestly if you don't know Bisclavret I don't know what you're doing here; it was literally taught on my university course as an example of potentail overlap between medieval studies and queer theory, it is spectacularly resonant in its themes of identity, personhood, situation of self in class and romantic-dynastic-sexual systems. The devotion of the knight to his king expressed without any of the trappings of knighthood or even a human voice. It is about yearning, it is about love, it is about love-as-loyalty, it is the literal 'let me be your hound', it is the werewolf as the outsider as the lover. When the knight awakes in the king's bed, returned to himself through love, he is greeted with rapturous joy and kisses and embraces. I really don't know what else I can say.”
- “the king…. the werewolf… I thought they were…. no, it couldn’t be….”
- “gay werewolves. need i say more???”
- “he gave him over 100 kisses <3”
- as someone who literally did my ma dissertation on werewolves i can confirm they have historically been inherently queercoded
Prose Lancelot:
- “this is the one where Galehaut gives up fighting Arthur because Lancelot bats his eyelashes at him. He spends a solid chunk of time living in chaste polyamory with Guinevere AND Lancelot. later they get separated and Galehaut dies for love because he thinks Lancelot is dead. Lancelot buries him with his own hands and tries to die by his side. This is Also the one where Gauvain says he wishes he was a woman just so he could bang Lancelot and Guinevere goes "same".”
- “GALEHAUT. Galehaut “had given [Lancelot] his heart with a love greater than loyal companionship alone could make a man feel for someone outside his family”, surrendered to Arthur for Lancelot, stepped over his own broken heart to help him be together with Guinevere, and then died of grief when he thought Lancelot had perished. Also, the remarkable bond of Lancelot and Gawain + Gawain saying he’d turn into a beautiful lady for Lancelot.”
- “Giving up on conquering the enrite kingdom because you want to be besties with Lancelot is pretty gay ngl”
- “Then Sir Gawain thought a little, like a man who believe he would never be well again. “If God were to grant me my health,” he said, “I'd immediately wish to be the most beautiful maiden in the world, happy and healthy, on condition that he would love me above all others, all his life and mine.” (Lancelot-Grail The Old French Arthurian Vulgate and Post-Vulgate in Translation, volume III, General Editor Norris J. Lacy, p.270)”
- “Going for sheer volume & variety here. Galehaut alone is worth the vote but Gawain's "I wish I was a woman so Lancelot would love me" line is just unparalleled. There's also a character named Drian the Gay rescued from a cursed coffin & as we all know, goths are queer on every axis. I rest my case.”
- “many reasons (galehauts whole thing…) but in particular remarkable reasons. that thing gawain says about wishing he was turned into a maiden on the condition that lancelot loves him for his whole life is a lot to me in particular in a multitude of queer ways”

Hello! This post will probably seem out of place on my blog but I am offering free proofreading and copy editing services in order to build a portfolio! Freelancing is a hard thing to get started in, especially when most of one's recent job experience has been in the service industry, but I love editing for folks and I'm really trying to make this the year I get it up and running, even if only as a side hustle. If you have any projects you'd like to have copy edited or proofread, please keep reading to see if we can help each other!
My qualifications:
Studied English at the University of Dallas
Worked as a copy editor at the student newspaper
Did a summer internship in the corporate communications dept for a global company which involved, among other things, independently editing the daily company newsblast
Am a hobbyist writer on my own time - I relate from both sides of the red pen!
Simply editing things for family, friends, and online mutuals! Which has gotten me testimonials such as these:
"Katie provided an attentive and thorough reading of my resume, and suggested several minute but important corrections which helped to clarify my writing! She responded quickly to my request, edited the document and returned it to me within a short timeline, and was clear and direct in her feedback."
-Marie Trotter, writer and critic
"Katie Kuplack is the editor you need! Her perceptive notes and sharp eye for grammar, such as verb tense and sentence structure, will make your writing more professional and publishable. Katie will take your writing seriously, offering honest feedback and encouraging you to exceed your expectations. I recommend Katie’s editing services for any writing project that you value and hope to share with the world."
-Sarah O'Brien, EIC of Boston Accent Lit and author of Shapeshifter
How It Would Work:
You can message me here or email me at [email protected] about the project you'd like me to work on and we'll talk about what service you're wanting, turnaround time, etc. I'm open to bouncing it back and forth as much as you need to get the final product you want. In the end, you get a more polished whatever-it-is, and I have your permission to keep before-and-after samples of your project for my portfolio, to be used on freelancing platforms like Upwork or eventually shown on my own website.
Types of Docs/Projects I am particularly interested in working on:
Short fiction and poetry.
Captions and subtitles*
Website copy and blog posts
Resumes, cover letters, other business writing
*I realize these typically don't get edited by a third party, but I am also interested in getting experience creating them if that's something you need!
Other stuff you should know:
I'm already familiar with AP Style, planning to learn Chicago, and can of course work with whatever company- or project-specific style guide you might have.
My topical specialties include English lit, pop culture, fandom, business communications, martial arts, beauty and skincare, and the coffee industry.
I have experience editing for ESL writers and translated work.
I can work with you through both Google and Microsoft applications.
What I will NOT work on:
Any AI-generated content
Marketing/sales copy
Full-length books/novels (not for free)
Amazon/Kindle e-books
Academic papers, dissertations, etc.
Please reblog to help me get this around and thank you if you read this whole thing! I know this is a long shot but I hope to hear from some of y'all soon. :)

How to Describe House of Leaves, an attempt by Me
it seems to make the most sense to treat it like an onion, and describe it from the innermost layer and branch outwards
it's about Will Navidson's film The Navidson Record. The Navidson Record is a kind of found footage autobiographical narrative about a filmmaker named Navidson and his family moving into a house that is much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, a haunting physical impossibility
but it's not about that, it's about Zampano, the man who wrote this dissertation on The Navidson Record. Zampano is a blind, old man who died in his apartment in an unremarkable way but leaves behind an eerie legacy, a collection of papers inside an old chest that looks like an APA-style dissertation on a horror film/documentary. this dissertation is filled with hundreds of quotes and citations from different sources, all included in great detail in the footnotes
oh, and it's all made up. the film. the citations. Will Navidson. it's all fake.
but it's not about that, it's about Johnny Truant, the man who found the chest full of papers in the old man's apartment, read them, and now is going insane because of it. or maybe not? Johnny feels like he's being stalked by some unknown horrific entity and is powerless to defend himself from it. he's got a fucked up past from two dead parents and a hell of a lot of stories that may or may not be true, and now he's got Zampano's work driving him to nightmares, and the nightmares following him throughout the day. he says as much in long, rambling footnotes of his own that exist beside Zampano's citations
but it's not even about that, it's about the fact that this is the fourth printed edition of this story, complete with colored text, 3 different appendixes, an index, and addition footnotes made by other Editors. this implies that either 1. previous editions existed that didn't have bonus content like that or 2. the author of this book, Mark Z. Danielewski wants you to think other versions of this book exist when they really don't
it's fiction that's like 10 levels deep and i got a headache just typing up that description. just wait til you see letter i just spent 45 minutes decoding

Hi this is a question for Jess! I've read some of your posts where you talk about how you used to be a freelance editor and then worked in book publishing; do you have any advice for a just-getting-started freelance copy editor with publishing-industry aspirations? I've had a few small projects, but I'm running into the catch-22 where everyone looking for book editors wants someone who already has a track record of editing books, and I'm feeling a little lost about how to establish myself. I really appreciate everything you guys do with this blog! It's been a huge help to me as I start trying to be a responsible adult in the world.
Hey kitten! Jess here, the once and future freelance editor.
When I was first starting out, one of the best decisions I made was to get cozy with academics. A friend of a friend was a grad student at the local university. I edited her dissertation, and she referred me to a handful of classmates who also needed their dissertations edited. This led me to reach out to the professors in different departments at the school to kind of say "Hi! I'm a freelance copyeditor trying to build my portfolio. Here are my qualifications. If you have any grad students looking for an editor for their thesis or dissertation, I'd be grateful if you passed my information along."
My entire career has been in nonfiction editing, so I relish working with academics. But even if you'd like to move into fiction some day, working with grad students, professors, and PhD candidates on book-length manuscripts will prove your worth to publishers and fiction writers alike.
