hi i love your blog and the stuff you've shared has been really invaluable for me writing my dissertation right now! i was wondering if you've ever read anything interesting about police horses, or perhaps horses working for the state more generally? apologies if you've already made a post about this and i've missed it.
Nice. Don't know if your dissertation is specifically about horse histories; if so, then I'd imagine you already know much more than I do. So I don't know how much help I can be.
I've posted about the history of police horses in Australia before, which is just excerpts from Stephen Gapps and Mina Murray, in their "From colonial cavalry to mounted police: a short history of the Australian police horse" (The Conversation, 28 July 2021; "Horse Patrol" aka "Mounted Police" formally established 1825 after Wiradjuri war, used to round-up escaped laborers and attack Aboriginal communities as crucial force in colonial admin in 1830s culminating in Waterloo Creek Massacre.)
I've made some references to US participation in British campaigns of Boer War. (Apparently there was a micro-industry of the New Orleans port shipping 110,000 horses and 81,000 mules on 166 voyages via 65 British steamships for a cost of like hundreds of thousands USD per month for three years to help Britain.)
Similarly, Steve Hewitt and others write about Canadian mounted police and their role in national power in the Great Plains; twentieth-century counter-subversion; monitoring labor strikes and Indigenous/student dissent, etc.
"The Masculine Mountie: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a Male Institution, 1914-1939" (Hewitt, Journal of the Canadian Historical Association, 1996)
Riding to the Rescue: The Transformation of the RCMP in Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1914-1939 (Hewitt, 2006)
"Fashioning farmers: ideology, agricultural knowledge and the Manitoba farm movement, 1890-1925" (Hewitt, Journal of Canadian Studies, 1997)
"Canadianizing the West: The North-West Mounted Police as Agents of the National Policy, 1873-1905" (Mcleod, The Prairie West: Historical Readings, edited by Francis and Palmer, 1992)
---
Guessing you've already considered this, but a relevant thing I've read might be Breeds of Empire: The 'Invention' of the Horse in Southeast Asia and Southern Africa 1500-1950 (Greg Bankoff and Sandra Swart, 2007), about "the 'invention' of specific breeds of horse in the context of imperial design and colonial trade routes" and "the historiographical and methodological problems with writing a more species or horse-centric history." There was an earlier influential paper about imperial use of horses by Swart, ""The World the Horses Made": A South African Case Study of Writing Animals into Social History" (International Review of Social History 55:2, 2010).
Last year I read Bellweather Histories: Animals, Humans, and US Environments in Crisis (edited by Susan Nance and Jennifer Marks, 2023), and there was an interesting chapter on horses by Marks: "Chicago's 1872 Equine Influenza Epizootic and the Evolution of Urban Transit Technology."
---
Have you seen Jagjeet Lally's "Empires and Equines: The Horse in Art and Exchange in South Asia, ca. 1600-1850" (Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, 35:1, 2015)? It covers Mughal state power and aristocratic prestige as tied to horses, but also refers to the later utility of horseback mobility in East India Company and British power consolidation.
I used to be in a Central Asia-specific program-type thing and there was a long list of academic writing, most if it not in English, about horses as essential for statecraft in Mongol, Persian, Mughal, Chinese, and Ottoman contexts. So I know that there's a huge amount of writing on the subject, but I did not retain much of it. Jagjeet Lally's bibliography here is helpful. This also brings to mind Alan Mikhail's work The Animal in Ottoman Egypt (2013) and Under Osman's Tree: The Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Environmental History (2017). Though horses aren't the main focus, they're essentially about "animal labor/capital."
---
I think I've seen that you've interacted with my old posts about Sujit Sivasundaram, Rohan Deb Roy, and Jonathan Saha on "interspecies empire"? Saha's most recent stuff includes writing in:
Biocultural Empire: New Histories of Imperial Lifeworlds (2024); Colonial Dimensions of the Global Wildlife Trade (2024); "A Historiography of Great Animal Massacres" (2024); "whiteness, masculinity, and ambivalent British Justice"; imperial use of elephants and "animal agency, undead capital, and imperial science" (2017); Subverting Empire: Deviance and Disorder in the British Colonial World (2015); imperial use of cattle and other livestock in "animals and the politics of colonial sensitibilites" (2015). Sivasundaram covers a lot of that (animality, criminality, imperial imaginaries) but also oceanic thinking.
---
Also thinking of:
The Horse in the City: Living Machines in the Nineteenth Century (Clay McShane and Joel A. Tarr, 2011)
And The Herds Shot Round the World: Native Breeds and the British Empire, 1800-1900 (Rebecca JH Woods, 2017). Though its not really about horses (mostly about sheep and cattle for dairy/meat).
---
But I know there are little niches:
(1) British frontier policing in Australia ("mounted patrols" in campaigns against Aboriginal peoples and keeping them on rangeland labor sites). (2) British metropolitan and urban settings (police horses in industrializing London, patrolling rural periphery during enclosure law era). (3) The settlement of the Great Plains of the US (especially origins of Rangers, the Fence Wars, and policing West Texas). (4) The Spanish colonization of Mexico and especially the Rio Grande Valley (horses in maintaining state power on the northern/desert frontiers; Spanish/Mexican states and Comanche/Apache mobility in southern Great Plains). (5) Argentina's state-building in the Chaco. (6) And then all of that material about Mughal, Mongol, Ottoman horses.
(Also, most recently, I did that annoying silly satirical retelling of horse-drawn sleighs as progenitor of vehicle and pedestrian laws in industrializing Amsterdam, and it alludes to how horse-drawn carriages were important affordances to wealthy aristocrats which shaped industrial urban space in Europe; I don't know much about it, but I know there's a fair amount of lit about both horses-as-vehicles and mounted police in early nineteenth-century Europe.)
Though I'm not really familiar with most of that. In trying to formulate thoughts about "carceral archipelagoes" and "frontiers," I've previously seen titles about the utility of telegraphs, railyards, and police for US power consolidation. But when horses/cattle get involved, I've been scared/disturbed by just how much of that literature seems to be directly produced by "police department museums," "police science" journals, or former police-superintendents-turned-pseudo-historians in their retirement years who study their own noble profession as a novel curiosity.
But I imagine you know better than me if this is true. So please put me back in my place if I've got the wrong impression!
It's my impression that, more recently, the advent of critical animal studies, multispecies ethnography, and critical geography has meant there's a lot of new stuff to check out.
#edited tag to add yea someone in rbs mentioned ann greenes Horses At Work Harnessing Power in Industrial America#horses a kinda unique case i think because while critical animal studies stuff on less charismatic creatures often explicitly is also about#colonial history the lit on horses is also flooded with like less rigorous stuff publicized by equestrians or ranching adjacent sponsors

dirlies look away. bones au fic about when liam finally joins the team - max and liam (liam misunderstands their relationship), 1k words. dedicating this fic to @mvlionheart and hmdf server
The lab is even cooler than he thought. Every grad student from the Jeffersonian Institute dreams of seeing it, nevermind actually getting hours to intern there. So this is a big achievement in Liam’s eyes and he’ll definitely be bragging about it to his friends – the ones who agree that working with dead people is cool, not the ones who try to get him a therapist every time he mentions his future profession.
But as much as he would like to think his internship was all his accomplishment, that's not entirely true. Even though he did work hard to be here.
His predecessor – Dr. Oscar Piastri – left, and now Liam is the new intern. Or a “squintern”, as Agent Ricciardo called him, but Liam doesn’t really get why – he doesn’t squint, his eyesight is great!
Despite how excited he feels about working here, the other members of the team don’t share his enthusiasm. It's clear that they all miss Dr. Piastri, it's written on their sad faces every time they have to talk to him, especially Dr. Carlos Sainz – his face is especially sad. Apparently he and Dr. Piastri were close friends. Mr. Leclerc – Charles – had to tell him that, because Dr. Sainz almost started crying when Liam tried to talk to him.
“Oscar used to ask me for samples from the fractures they found in the tibia,” Dr. Sainz had sobbed when Liam showed up in his office. Liam had then left the tray with the tibia on the table and slowly backed away with his arms raised. He has been avoiding Dr. Sainz since then.
Unlike the others, Dr. Verstappen has been very professional with him – not that Liam was expecting otherwise.
He still can't believe he gets to work with one of the best anthropologists in the world. Liam has been somewhat of a fan of Dr. Verstappen ever since he decided to pursue anthropology. He has read every article and paper of his and tried to attend all the lectures he gave at the university.
It's not special, Liam knows, almost every anthropology student idolizes Dr. Verstappen, but he still can't leave his hopes of being equals one day – not a professor and his student, but two respected scientists working together.
They are currently standing in the bone room, examining a set of remains – their recent case. Liam is just writing down their findings when Dr. Verstappen speaks up.
“Mr. Lawson, have you ever been in a sexual relationship with your boss?” he asks, without looking at Liam, his voice is flat.
“Wh-what?” Liam croaks, dropping the pen. He bends down to pick it up and when he straightens back up, Dr. Verstappen is standing far too close. “I-Uh…No?” Liam says, blushing.
“Hm. Okay,” Dr. Verstappen replies, and as if nothing happened, he moves away and picks up one of the ulnas to continue his examination.
***
Charles is working on a face reconstruction for their recent victim when a knock interrupts him. He swivels around in his chair and sees Liam awkwardly standing by the door.
It feels weird having him here in the lab. They all were very sad when Oscar decided to go back home after finishing his dissertation. He had said that there was an upsetting lack of good forensic anthropologists in Australia, and now that he has the doctorate he plans on changing that. They said their goodbyes and made Oscar promise to call them every few weeks.
Still, the mood in the lab wasn't the same since he left. And now there's Liam – a new intern who's supposed to “replace” Oscar and help them on the cases.
From his work so far, Liam isn't bad, he is just not Oscar. And it's clear he knows that too, can feel the way everyone is awkward and withdrawn around him, especially Carlos.
So Charles feels the need to help Liam join the team, and for the past week he's been somewhat of a consultant on the lab’s inner workings.
“What's up?” Charles asks, looking at the way Liam keeps nervously slicking his hair back.
“I-uh. I'm not sure,” Liam stammers. He puts his hands in the pockets of his gray lab coat but then takes them out again and moves closer to Charles. “Did Oscar… was he-uh. Was he Max's…boy toy?”
Charles chokes on a breath, he definitely didn't expect that. He would think Liam is joking, but judging by his hectic blush and nervous energy it doesn't seem to be the case.
“And I thought Dr. Verstappen had a thing with Agent Ricciardo? I mean, I wouldn't want to be a homewrecker-” Liam blabbers, waving his hands through the air in jerky movements.
“Hey, calm down okay? Nobody is wrecking anyone,” Charles says and holds up his hands in hopes to stop Liam’s rambling. “Why do you think Max is hitting on you?”
“He-uh…” Liam says, moving his hand through his hair again, “...asked me if I ever had sex with my boss.”
“Oh!” Charles exclaims and then tries really hard not to laugh. “Yeah it's… the victim had an affair with his boss,” Charles chuckles, “Sometimes… Max is not the best at talking to other people. He probably was just curious.”
“So… Dr. Verstappen is not hitting on me?” Liam asks, confused.
Charles refuses to see his expression as disappointed.
“No, no. Max is your professor. A very…blunt and straightforward one. I promise, he was not trying to hit on you,” Charles says. He had tried to explain soft starts to Max too many times and he will probably have to do it again.
“Okay. But what about Agent Ricciardo?” Liam asks, raising his brow.
“That…is a complicated story. Better not to touch it,” Charles smiles, hoping Liam understands the “drop it” message. He loves to gossip, but he's not about to discuss his best friend's love life with a rookie.
“Yeah, okay. Thanks, I guess,” Liam says and moves toward the doors.
“Hey, no problem. And Liam?” Charles smiles genuinely this time. “I know it's hard, feeling like an outsider in the team. But try giving it a little time, ok? I'm sure everyone will warm up to you soon.”
“Okay. Thank you, Charles.” Liam smiles back and leaves the office.

People with NPD are frustrated by the term "narcissistic abuse" because it's closely linked to NPD itself. When they seek resources for recovery or coping strategies, they're bombarded with information on "recovering from a narcissist" rather than guidance tailored to individuals with NPD.
It's not harmful to label abuse as emotional, physical, sexual, or even using a new term like "egotistical abuse." But when it's labeled as "narcissistic abuse," it can create problems for people with NPD, regardless of intention. I understand you'll likely dismiss this, but I hope you'll take a moment to think about it.
Thank you for being patient for all the time I took to craft this reply, I really wanted to give your ask the time it deserves.
I looked into resources connecting NPD with narcissistic abuse and I did find a few. Most of them were articles written by therapists in single practises, blogspot articles or other uncritiqued works, or dissertations written by students in counselling and psychiatry. Obviously any misinformation is bad, especially when it's coming from places that should be reputable like therapists and universities. I wouldn't say in my research what I found was evidence that narcissism is "closely linked" with NPD in any reputable circles though. In todays day and age anyone can have an opinion and make it available for free on the publicly available Internet. It's our own responsibility to educate ourselves and make sure we are leaning on credible sources to form our opinions.
Speaking of the modern age of the Internet, the last part of your ask interested me and I decided to test your theory and run a little experiment.
When people with NPD seek online resources to for support with their disorder, are they are instead met with information for narcissistic abuse survivors?
I created 5 phrases a person suffering narcissistic abuse might search and 5 a person with NPD might search and put each of them into Google.
I used a VPN to manually change my my browsing location to 5 English speaking countries (Ireland, Canada, The USA, Australia and England) and, clearing the cache between every search to reduce uncontrolled variables, searched each phrase to simulate what a person may find in each of those locations when looking for support online.
I decided to see what results came up when searching "narcissist help" "narcissist support" "narcissism recovery" "narcissism signs" and "narcissistic abuse" to emulate what a person suffering from narcissistic abuse might search when seeking support. What came up on the first page of google were mostly resources tailored to support a person experiencing narcissistic abuse in all 5 locations.
Then I searched "NPD help" "NPD support" "NPD signs" "NPD recovery" and "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" to emulate what a person suffering with NPD might search while seeking support. What came up on the first page of Google were only resources tailored to support a person seeking treatment, information or diagnosis for NPD in all 5 locations.
It seems to me that when using the correct vocabulary for their disorder, people with NPD can find support, resources and information relevant to them fairly easily online. Even though they may share a common keyword that victims of narcissistic abuse may also be searching.
From the small test I did to see if your hypothesis held true, it doesn't look like narcissistic abuse awareness harms people with NPD by altering the type of information they may find online at all. My results suggest that the only reason a person with NPD may struggle to find resources when searching for them online is if they've been led to believe that narcissism is the correct term for their disorder.
If people with NPD are led to believe that "narcissist" and "narcissism" are synonyms for their disorder, they may be using these keywords when seeking online resources for diagnosis, treatment or support online. This could explain why people with NPD are reporting that when looking for resources for their disorder online, they're repeatedly finding resources better suited for people looking for information on narcissistic abuse.
The evidence suggests that actually, it's people like you, who are arguing that narcissistic abuse awareness harms people with NPD because narcissism and NPD are synonyms, might actually be the ones harming people with NPD in this way.
I'd love to know if these stats are repeatable, so if you'd like to do the same test and let me know your findings, get back to me any time.

Government Health Ctr Government Health Centers: Research Questions and Hypothesis Opportunities for public health vary considerably from one nation to another. This is even true of westernized and industrialized nations, where political, economic and corporate culture will have a determinant impact on how public health is pursued and how access is accommodated. The research proposed for a consequent dissertation would examine these distinctions as they concern the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. Each of the four nations noted offers a variance of public and government-sponsored health centers, however the nature, accessibility and adequacy of these centers also vary considerably. As this dissertation proceeds with an examination of these variances, it will be with an emphasis on defining the differences in operational orientation, emergency preparedness, available funding and the demographics which require and benefit most from such centers. Research Questions: Primary Research Question: Research questions are framed in order to promote a comparative discussion on the public health orientation of each of the four nations denoted above. First, the research is driven by a primary research question. Subsequently, the research will consider the implications of several subordinate research questions. The Primary Research Question asks the following: What is the nature of the relationship between each nation's orientation toward universal or nationalized healthcare as this contributes to the accessibility, availability and quality of its government health centers? Subordinate Research Questions: In order to promote a nuanced research endeavor, this question is girded by the inclusion of several sub-questions. These will help to direct the focus of the research as we proceed to either prove or discount the hypothesis presented hereafter. What impact does the political orientation of the respondent nation levy on the presence or absence of government health centers? What connections can be empirically observed between a governmental philosophy regarding healthcare availability and the resource availability for government health centers? What demographics are served by government health centers? Does this orientation differ from one nation to the next? What is the connection between demographic need and the accessibility of government health centers? How does the availability and quality of government health centers impact accessibility? Hypothesis: The primary hypothesis driving this research centers on the presumption that certain distinctive differences in a nation's ideological orientation toward the accessibility of healthcare will have a determinant effect on the way that said nations make available public health centers and the quality which is invested into said centers. Therefore, the research proceeds from the assertion that the ideological orientation of each of the respective nations considered toward universal or nationalized healthcare is a primary determinant of the accessibility, availability and quality of government health centers. The research will proceed to the prove the argument that a greater affiliation with universal or nationalized healthcare principles will be proportional with a nation's greater accessibility, availability and quality of government health centers. https://www.paperdue.com/customer/paper/government-sponsored-health-centers-53920#:~:text=Logout-,GovernmentSponsoredHealthCenters,-Length2pages Read the full article

Dissertation: Primary Research Methodology
Research design: Natural/Quasi Experiment
Sampling type: volunteer sampling/random sampling
I will be using a non-experimental research method: self reports. The data collection method will be through an online questionnaire.
This is because I want to get a range of information from a large and diverse sample pool. With an online survey, I can get responses from several different types of participants which would increase the generalizability of my study. Self reports allow participants to describe their own experiences which provides rich in-depth qualitative data. My research aims to find out audience preferences and opinions, so this is the best method for getting comprehensive answers to my aims. In addition, a self report is the easiest and most accessible research method for me and is much less costly and time consuming than conducting an experiment or interview.
Furthermore, I’m using an anonymous questionnaire because social desirability bias will be reduced due to no interviewer being present.
I will make use of likert scales, rating scales, closed questions, and open questions in order to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. In addition, the range of different types of questions will reduce acquiescence bias.
The survey will also include filler questions to reduce demand characteristics.
In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the sample participants, I will include demographic questions that will help me assess the generalisability of the study: participants' age, nationality, location, occupation, gender, education, and film consumption habits. These questions are as follows:
What is your age?
What is your gender? (Man, Woman, Non-binary/other, Prefer not to say)
What is your nationality?
Where do you currently live? (Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia)
What is your occupation?
What is your highest level of education? (Secondary education or lower, High school diploma, Undergraduate degree, Postgraduate education or higher, other)
How often do you watch horror movies? (likert scale)
Aims
Is abject horror more or less effective through the medium of animation as opposed to live action?/ Is animation more effective that live action for depicting abject horror?
To what extent are audiences drawn to body genres?
To what extent do audiences experience strong physical/emotional responses to body genres?
Are body genre films enjoyed primarily by women? why?
Is abject horror enjoyed primarily by women? why?
Is body horror enjoyed primarily by women?
Hypothesis
Animation is just as effective as live action when approaching abject horror.
Body genre films are enjoyed primarily by women.
Abject horror is enjoyed primarily by women.
Controls
To avoid misinterpretations and maintain clarity, the study will include a definitions for terms the participants may not be familiar with:
Tear-Jerkers - films that are deliberately designed to evoke strong emotional responses, particularly sadness and tears, from the audience, often focusing on themes of tragedy, loss, or difficult situations. (E.g: Marley and Me, Titanic)
Body Horror- A subgenre or style of horror that involves depictions of the human body being transformed, damaged, or destroyed in unsettling ways. It is meant to provoke strong feelings of fear or disgust.
Medium - refer to the materials or techniques used to portray the film. Examples of medium include 2D animation, 3D animation, live-action, stop motion, etc.
standardized instructions

By proceeding with this questionnaire, you confirm that you are above the age of 15 and consent to participate in this research.
This survey is being conducted as part of an undergraduate research project for academic purposes only. Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time.
This survey aims to gather your personal reactions and observations regarding the following films. I am interested in your individual perspectives and interpretations. Please answer each question thoughtfully and honestly. There are no right or wrong answers.
The questionnaire will take approximately [time] minutes to complete. Your responses will remain anonymous.
