Tumblr media
At my last job, we sold lots of hobbyist electronics stuff, including microcontrollers.
This turned out to be a little more complicated than selling, like, light bulbs. Oh how I yearned for the simplicity of a product you could plug in and have work.
Background: A microcontroller is the smallest useful computer. An ATtiny10 has a kilobyte of program memory. If you buy a thousand at a time, they cost 44 cents each.
Tumblr media
As you'd imagine, the smallest computer has not great specs. The RAM is 32 bytes. Not gigabytes, not megabytes, not kilobytes. Individual bytes. Microcontrollers have the absolute minimum amount of hardware needed to accomplish their task, and nothing more.
This includes programming the thing. Any given MCU is programmed once, at the start of its life, and then spends the next 30 years blinking an LED on a refrigerator. Since they aren’t meant to be reflashed in the field, and modern PCs no longer expose the fast, bit-bangable ports hobbyists once used, MCUs usually need a third-party programming tool.
But you could just use that tool to install a bootloader, which then listens for a magic number on the serial bus. Then you can reprogram the chip as many times as you want without the expensive programming hardware.
There is an immediate bifurcation here. Only hobbyists will use the bootloader version. With 1024 bytes of program memory, there is, even more than usual, nothing to spare.
Tumblr media
Consumer electronics development is a funny gig. It, more than many other businesses, requires you to be good at everything. A startup making the next Furby requires a rare omniexpertise. Your company has to write software, design hardware, create a production plan, craft a marketing scheme, and still do the boring logistics tasks of putting products in boxes and mailing them out. If you want to turn a profit, you do this the absolute minimum number of people. Ideally, one.
Proving out a brand new product requires cutting corners. You make the prototype using off the shelf hobbyist electronics. You make the next ten units with the same stuff, because there's no point in rewriting the entire codebase just for low rate initial production. You use the legacy code for the next thousand units because you're desperately busy putting out a hundred fires and hiring dozens of people to handle the tsunami of new customers. For the next ten thousand customers...
Tumblr media
Rather by accident, my former employer found itself fulfilling the needs of the missing middle. We were an official distributor of PICAXE chips for North America. Our target market was schools, but as a sideline, we sold individual PICAXE chips, which were literally PIC chips flashed with a bootloader and a BASIC interpreter at a 200% markup. As a gag, we offered volume discounts on the chips up to a thousand units. Shortly after, we found ourselves filling multi-thousand unit orders.
We had blundered into a market niche too stupid for anyone else to fill. Our customers were tiny companies who sold prototypes hacked together from dev boards. And every time I cashed a ten thousand dollar check from these guys, I was consumed with guilt. We were selling to willing buyers at the current fair market price, but they shouldn't have been buying these products at all! Since they were using bootloaders, they had to hand program each chip individually, all while PIC would sell you programmed chips at the volume we were selling them for just ten cents extra per unit! We shouldn't have been involved at all!
But they were stuck. Translating a program from the soft and cuddly memory-managed education-oriented languages to the hardcore embedded byte counting low level languages was a rather esoteric skill. If everyone in-house is just barely keeping their heads above water responding to customer emails, and there's no budget to spend $50,000 on a consultant to rewrite your program, what do you do? Well, you keep buying hobbyist chips, that's what you do.
And I talked to these guys. All the time! They were real, functional, profitable businesses, who were giving thousands of dollars to us for no real reason. And the worst thing. The worst thing was... they didn't really care? Once every few months they would talk to their chip guy, who would make vague noises about "bootloaders" and "programming services", while they were busy solving actual problems. (How to more accurately detect deer using a trail camera with 44 cents of onboard compute) What I considered the scandal of the century was barely even perceived by my customers.
In the end my employer was killed by the pandemic, and my customers seamlessly switched to buying overpriced chips straight from the source. The end! No moral.

Title: Vicious Flames Destroy, But Love Wins
A/N: Written for @magicspyglass, featuring their characters Erikson, Claudius, Chloe, and Henry!
Summary: Erikson just wanted to surprise his lovers with a homemade breakfast, but an unfortunate oil fire brings back bad memories. Thankfully, his lovers understand!
Erikson thought he was well past his trauma. Then again, no one was really over trauma, were they?
It had all started out as a perfectly normal morning: Erikson had awoken early and took a shower while his lovers were still pleasantly snoozing, then made himself a cup of coffee. As he waited for the coffee to cool, the valued food distributor began to work on breakfast for his lovers and himself. Erikson took great pride in being able to take care of the gaggle of lovers he had met, never one to shy away from making something they all would enjoy.
The act of cooking felt second hand to Erikson, the motions monotonous. As time ticked up, Erikson’s mind began to wander to what needed to be done today. They could all go on a date together, it’d been a while since they—
In just a flash, oil spat back at Erikson. He shielded his face, hissing when the hot oil made contact with his skin. Another flicker of oil veered off course, landing on the black-top stove with a sizzle. In the pan, the bacon he’d been working so hard to make sizzled and bubbled, a flicker of gray smoke billowing from the crispy bacon and filling the air.
The smoke alarm was the next to go off, it’s wail only adding to the pandemonium. Every nerve in Erikson’s body seemed to tighten at once, his hand going rigid around the pan handle. He couldn’t move. He could only watch as the bacon, once sizzling, now turned black and charred as the oil fire spread in the pan.
The former V.F.D. agent’s breath caught in his throat, the smell of the fire sending him skyrocketing back to a simpler time; but simpler did not always mean better, as the fire reminded him of the organization and the horrors that fire could bring. Despite his rational brain screaming at him to cover the fire, he found himself frozen in time, staring at the fire he’d created.
Over the roar of blood in his ears, he could make out another sound. His hand was yanked away from the pan, another’s hand quickly snuffing out the fire with the lid of the pan. Strong arms wrapped around him, grounding him to the situation.
Erikson hadn’t even realized his breathing had picked up. His breath was coming out in short, uneven pants. And his eyes felt wet. Reaching underneath his glasses, Erikson could feel the wetness collecting under his eyes. Oh. He was crying. When did that happen?
“What happened?” A voice rang out, warbled from the adrenaline still spiking through Erikson’s system. Erikson found the strength to move his head back, looking into the deep and worried reds of Claudius.
“Claude,” Erikson’s voice sounded soft, softer than he’d heard it since childhood. A heat swirled in his stomach, embarrassment and guilt battling it out. He felt stupid. What had happened? One second, he was making breakfast. Then, he was shaking like a leaf and crying in Claude’s arms.
“You’re alright,” Claude’s voice spoke low in Erikson’s ear. He rubbed slow, gentle circles into the smaller man’s shoulders, attempting to comfort him. Comfort wasn’t something that came as naturally as it had to Chloe, but he wanted to try for Erikson. “You’re alright, we have you.”
Chloe, the last one trailing the pack, ran in the room. Her hair was a mess, her sleeping garments rumpled, and she was breathing heavily. “Are you okay?!”
Erikson cringed. He didn’t want to worry her—or anyone for that matter. As much as he wished to sweep this reaction under the rug, he knew it wouldn’t fly; they were worried about him.
“M’fine,” Erikson mumbled out. His face was still red hot from shame, his eyes not daring to meet his lovers. Instead, he focused on Claude’s chest, hands sculpting a route that felt familiar. Just the warm touch of skin on skin was enough to calm Erikson’s racing heart.
“Bullshit.” Claude’s hands buried themselves against Erikson’s shoulders, the heavy weight grounding the smaller man further. “Erikson, you’re shaking. You’re not fine.”
“He’s right.” Henry was at the sink, filling up a cup. “Here, drink something.” He said, his normally chill tone tinged with something foreign.
Erikson didn’t have time to dwell on the emotions filling the room. He took the water, hands stilling with only a small tremor, and rose the glass to his lips. The cool liquid soothed his raspy throat.
No one dare broke the silence that filled the room. The three lovers waited for their fourth to gather his bearings, not wanting to pressure him. It wasn’t often they saw him anything less than put together; the sight was jarring.
Once the cup was empty and Erikson could feel his heartbeat returning to normal, he finally spoke.
“It was an oil fire,” he mumbled under his breath. “I was cooking—and I wasn’t paying attention and--” He damned his hands, which began to tremble again. Memories of the incident flooded his mind, sending him momentarily back to that ill-fated day; it only took less than an hour for the fire to ravage and destroy everything in its path.
What if they weren’t here to stop the fire this time? Erikson’s face warmed and his stomach lurched forward, the thought of them perishing becoming too much.
“It’s over now.” Chloe took one of Erikson’s trembling hands in her own, squeezing and running her thumb over the knuckles in a side to side swipe. “No one was hurt,” she reminded him.
“You could have been,” he replied, brown eyes finally daring to look up. The shame had shifted, changed into a simmering anger. “I couldve hurt you all.”
Henry frowned. “But you didn’t. We’re okay. You’re okay. There’s nothing to worry about.”
“What if I couldn’t save you? What if no one woke up and…” Erikson calmed himself, the deep breath he raked in rattling his chest. “I froze,” he whispered. “I froze over a fire.” Anger filled his chest, remembering the things he’d done, caused, had to witness. “You don’t understand. The VFD, they…” He rose a hand, raking it through his now messy hair. “There’s things I’ve done, things I can’t take back.” He was rambling now, but by God he couldn’t stop himself. “I’m not a good person.”
A pregnant pause filled the room, the gravity of the situation weighing upon them. Erikson didn’t speak often about his past with the VFD. His lovers didn’t pry, though they all had an inkling what had happened weighed on him. But seeing him like this, so open and raw and vulnerable—it broke their hearts.
The giant of a man lowered himself down beside the vulnerable frenzied denier. Claude’s large hand came, cupping Erikson’s cheek and forcing him to look at him. “You froze because you were afraid. You’ve seen what fire can do.” His steady gaze met Erikson’s. “It’s human to freeze during traumatic moments.”
“Yeah, it’s not just flight or fight. There’s also the option to freeze.” Henry nodded. “Just because you froze doesn’t mean anything less. Your brain was just overwhelmed.”
Although their validations had some truth to them and helped the young man, he couldn’t help but feel the inklings of shame still clouding his mind. While he loved their attention—he loved them—he terribly hated it during these exact circumstances.
Erikson took the refilled cup and swallowed down another gulp of water, hoping it would help him find the words. “There’s so much they made me do…” He mumbled, his eyes cold and distant as they looked everywhere but his lover who held him, warm and protective. “The things I’ve seen people do… the things I’ve seen fire destroy…” He took another gulp of water, chasing away the closing up of his throat.
Chloe’s hand joined Claude’s on his opposite cheek, hand softer but none any the less protective. “You’re not alone, Erikson. We’re a unit.” Her soft eyes met Erikson’s, though he try to avoid it. “That means when something affects one of us, it actually affects all of us.” She worried her lip between her teeth. “I wish you didn’t need to go through any of this…” Her brown eyes shone. “But you survived.”
He survived… she was right. She was always right. Erikson was a survivor; his whole life had been a constant need of survival. But when he was with the three people he loved more than anything in the world? Well, he never felt safer.
“You’re right… sorry about breakfast.” Erikson let out a sigh and looked towards the charred-beyond-repair bacon.
“That’s okay! I know a bakery that we can get something from!” Chloe chirped, her kindness shining through. “Maybe some delicious, hot donuts will do us good.”
“I could go for some donuts,” Henry said. Looking down, he chuckled. “But maybe we should think about getting changed first?”
Silently, Erikson stared at his girlfriend. He knew Chloe had her own demons, ones that she tried desperately to hide. But she never once let them damper her kindness. He wasn’t sure how she did it, but the realization that she was desperately trying to show him kindness and love, while possibly also freaking out, brought about a wave of love and affection. Maybe, one day, some of her kindness may rub off on him.
“I suppose we should go out. It has been a while,” Erik said, lifting himself up off the ground and dusting himself off. “Shall we?”

Close Friend 3: Soju Bomb Lied to Me
Angry rant time!
I do not like to trash shows for being "not gay enough"; I think there's room in the BL sphere for all kinds of stories and I'm really interested in shows that would not typically 'count as BL' getting money and eyes, so I'm pretty forgiving of something being advertised as a BL and not meeting the criteria of a BL. I was not mad at Tunku Drama Shower for One Room Angel, for example, because that show was good and queerness was at the core of the story, and even though it didn't really work as a romance narrative, I'm glad they experimented with it.
However.
HOWEVER.
Close Friend 3 went too far and I'm mad about it. Let me break it down for you: Close Friend is a franchise that started in 2021; VIU hired a bunch of established pairs from other shows and got them to each do a microseries to see what stuck. The tagline was "six different pairs of men, six different forms of love". Then in Close Friend 2 the two most popular couples (Ohm & Fluke from Until We Meet Again, and Kimmon and Copter from 2 Moons and Gen Y) got a sequel series, in which their characters were put into the same universe, and we had essentially two BL couples co-heading the miniseries. And while Close Friend 1 and 2 aired on Viki, Close Friend 3 was picked up by the queer content distributor GagaOOLala.
All that's to say Close Friend 3: Soju Bomb is the third entry into a franchise that to date has been romance narratives featuring exclusively m/m couples, and is airing on a queer platform, has only the guys in the series on the poster, and has a heart in the logo of the show. And so I do not think I am crossing any lines to say it is a betrayal for this show to not be a BL romance, which it decidedly is NOT.
[Just to underscore that it makes no sense why this is "Close Friend 3": While all 6 of the microseries in S1 were unrelated, the stories that were in S2 were related and were sequels to S1. So it's REALLY strange that S3 had not a single callback to S1 or 2--especially since in those earlier seasons, Ohm played a music producer, so it would have been really easy to even just mention his character in a show about aspiring music artists. They didn't even try.]
Not only is this show not a BL in the more standard ways--it isn't about romance at it's core--but it also is not about androsexual men (men who are attracted to men). Even more egregiously, there is a kiss that it teases for several episodes, but that kiss turns out to be a drunken "I love my buddies" kiss that everyone agrees is no big deal once it's revealed.
At my most generous, one of these characters could be said to have maybe had some kind of questioning/queer awakening occur as a result of the kisses. He was ruminating on his flashes of memory, and clearly has a reaction to hearing about how difficult life was for the lesbian couple that felt personal. But it's not a central core of the narrative, and as soon as he remembers what happened and the band members have the conversation in which they agree they're just friends (and they joke that one day having a cush on him is possible), that thread drops. If he does remain questioning his sexuality (which, by the way, it was never clear he was doing in the first place--he says in the show that he was concerned about the fact that he kissed them and their reception of him afterwards. The actor definitely played it like he was queer, but the show does nothing to make that explicit), it does not remain a concern of the show and is never brought up again, not even in non-romantic context e.g. concerns about his future if he were to try to debut as a (closeted or out) KPop idol.
Meanwhile there are two heterosexual romances as subplots of this story (one of which is with their manager, and as trainees that is potentially exploitative but never treated as a problem by the show). There is also an older lesbian couple which would be extremely cute except one of them is dead (side-eyeing you, My Strawberry Film, for contributing to this becoming a pattern I hate).
There is also a "shippable" couple in the show that the show makes clear is not a couple because one of them is in one of the heterosexual couples I mentioned above. Seeing these two sometimes hit BL beats while knowing they're not going anywhere was frustrating and felt like salt in the wound.
By setting up audience expectations that this would be a BL story and then betraying those expectations (and in fact laughing at them), this show has done itself a serious disservice. If they had billed this as a general Thai/Korean crossover about Thai Kpop trainees who are filmed in some pretty iconic spots in Korea (e.g. most KPop listeners and kdrama watchers will recognize Yongma Land) where they explore their friendship, their reasons for wanting to debut, and their feelings around the restrictions that the company has placed them under for years just to abandon them, I'd have been on board, and said they did a decent job. The ending was a little pat (particularly the idea that anything at these companies would change), it didn't take things that it set up as serious very seriously, and the character arcs were not very strong, but I was entertained at some of the twists and the reveal of what happened during their blackout drunk night (Gaga in their listing compares this show to The Hangover and it's a similar premise), the friendships were solid, and it was very pretty; in other circumstances I'd happily say watch if you're bored or something specific in the show appeals to you (if you like The Hangover; if you like good cinematography and unusual locations; if you like boyband stories, as examples).
As it stands, I am now upset, will never recommend this to anyone, and these creators are on notice (the cinematographer, Job, was also involved in The Shipper and Our Days, so he is on my List. How dare this man continue to use his talents for shows that don't deserve them. The Trainee better be stunning, that's all I'll say about him. The screenwriter Rose is new so she gets a warning, and the director is Yoo who also directed 55:15 Never Too Late, which was ok so he also gets a warning).
TL;DR This show should never have been marketed as a BL. I do not enjoy being set up for disappointment or for queer stories to be sidelined in ostensibly queer content (same complaint I have about My Strawberry Film). This approach did this show no favours at all, and it means I cannot recommend it.

I finally was able to get some concrete information on Sergei! Have some doodles of him while I brainrot under the cut
Tumblr media
Sergei is a Joy Mutant with some sentience left! I imagine right after the Flash the Joy distributed was still rather experimental, which is why you would get more oddball mutants like Jonathan or Henry. Sergei is particularly unique given he retains most of his sentience.
However, Sergei has little to no memory of his past. Even before the Flash he was a little strange with his obsession for bloodshed and violence, keeping it just contained enough to seem normal. He still does. Underneath his smiling mask is sharp teeth, used to tear into flesh. He takes great pleasure in watching others suffer, and the world is built for people like him to roam free.
He could care less about Buddy. What he does care about is Buzzo, since after mutating Buzzo was the only authority he recognized. Deciding to dub him the "Blue King" since he's the distributor of Joy. Speaking of mutating his left arm was badly mutated, so he lobbed it off himself. It was a "necessary sacrifice" and "barely hurt at all" is what he claims.
Sergei empathizes with Buzzo's sadistic obsession with Brad, making sure he's suffering adequately. He would gladly poke one of Brad's eyes out if Buzzo permitted it, but the Joy Boys were given strict instruction not to mess with him except to offer more Joy.
So Sergei just wanders with other groups of Joy Boys, out to spread their influence. His favorite types of excursions are those that break out in violence, often luring victims away to eat them (quite literally).
Outside of that, Sergei prefers to keep to himself. His disfigured chest and missing arm staying hidden under his cloak. When with a group he refuses to sleep, saying it's more important for the others. On rare occasions he saves random folk who are out doing stupid things, like wandering around the cul-de-sacs alone. "The creeps will eat you dumbass! And they're less forgiving than I."
Occasionally, when he's positively pissed he leaves his humanity behind and acts just like any other Joy Mutant. Crying, screaming, biting, all that fun stuff. It hasn't happened often, but Sergei only vaguely remembers these outbursts. Though he feels no remorse for whoever was in the way.
So that's Sergei! Thank you for letting me blab to you about silly man, maybe I'll blab some more later.
