Tragic, comic and now erotic: Noémie Merlant continues to prove that she can play anything, including a radically contemporary version of Emmanuelle. But how do you reconcile sensuality and feminism in an era that leaves so little room for nuance? Norine Raja asked her.

Suddenly, the interview’s soundtrack changes drastically. At the café terrace where we're chatting, the lyrics of Maître Gims give way to an electro remix of the familiar melody of Bella Ciao.

Is it a sign? The music seems to have anticipated Noémie Merlant's thoughts: «At one point, I felt trapped. Now, it's like this song: freedom, freedom, freedom!» she says to the beat of the chorus. Has she reached the point of total emancipation? «Not yet, but I’m getting there», she says with a smile.

On this June afternoon, the actress is back home in the Paris suburbs after having attended two festivals in a row – Biarritz and Nantes – to present her second feature film as director, Les Femmes au balcon. Espresso started, unfussy outfit, bag casually laid on the floor, hair in a ponytail. She weighs her words, relishes the silences. Then, the next minute, she rivets you with her electric gaze and makes her point with total conviction. Just try to pigeonhole her. She’s got a 14-year career under her belt and as many different roles: a rebellious teenager in Les Héritiers (2014), a naive aristocrat in Le Retour du héros (2018), a trans man in A Good Man (2020). «She's a perfect blend of precision and abandon», said Céline Sciamma, who directed her in Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019). «She can play a powerful woman, but also hint at vulnerability», adds Audrey Diwan, winner of the Lion d’or for L'Événement (2021), who has just directed her in Emmanuelle – more on that later.

Because she remains an enigmatic figure in the public eye, no persona seems too outsized for her. Think she’s limited to dramatic roles? She displays unexpected comedic flair in L'Innocent (2022), in which she plays Louis Garrel's brash best friend: twinkling eyes, a mischievous attitude, raucous laughter. Her feigned nervous breakdown in a highway restaurant is unforgettable. The role (finally) earned her the César for Best Supporting Actress in 2023. Audrey Diwan hasn't forgotten that performance: «Every time she smiles in this film, she turns the world upside down.»

That same year, the filmmaker was working on a remake of Just Jaeckin's Emmanuelle, the famous erotic feature film of the Giscardian era. At the time, Noémie Merlant had never seen this landmark of 1970s sexual revolution, the first installment in a 15-part saga. So she met the director without any preconceived ideas or images. She was inspired by the character. «She must be exhausted in her search for pleasure», she suggested to Audrey Diwan, who offered her the role before the meeting was over. She insisted on watching the original film after shooting was done. Her verdict? «It's a disaster. The first part is interesting, with this open relationship. But then there's a storyline with Emmanuelle and an older man. She gets raped in front of him...»

The film has aged badly, but the 2024 version is free of any misogyny. The look and feel have been modernized. Replacing the postcard Thai décor and its whiff of orientalism is a luxurious Hong Kong setting. Not a young woman pandering to the desires of others, but an ambitious thirtysomething in the throes of self-discovery. A complete reinterpretation, in other words. I hesitate to ask: was she afraid to embrace this character and her sultry aura? She dismisses the idea out of hand: «That never even occurred to me. What interests me these days is working with women directors who are seeking to redefine representations of women, their imagination, their sexuality.»

Céline Dion, her idol

Sorority was Noémie Merlant's guiding principle, long before she became aware of or defined the concept of female solidarity. The daughter of a pair of real estate agents, she grew up in Rezé, a town of 40,000 people near Nantes, in a happy household where television held center stage. Evenings were spent watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and crying over Titanic, she admits with a touch of embarrassment. Like thousands of French people, we'd like to tell her. She is very close to her mother and older sister, who suffers from a disability. To avoid adding to her parents' burdens, Noémie learned not to take up too much space. After years of therapy, she's come to realize: «It's nobody's fault, just the dynamics imposed by society. And then, at the same time, school teaches you not to make waves, society tells women to be well-behaved.»

So she found other means of expression. She was a soloist with the Nantes Conservatoire choir, and dreamed of following in the footsteps of her idol Céline Dion. She also practiced ballet and modern jazz for ten years. Her father was convinced that Noémie was destined for a career in the arts. One day in the mid-2000s, he saw an advertisement for the Cours Florent and encouraged her to try her luck. The 17-year-old was scared, but eventually let herself be convinced. She headed for the capital, where the transition was rather brutal. «When I arrived, I was thinking: “I don't know anyone, I have no culture... What am I going to do?”» She compensated for her imposter syndrome with a thirst for knowledge. Here she lists the directors she needed to catch up with: Bergman, Cassavetes, the great Italian filmmakers like Visconti. And reading? «There's nothing to be done about it, I just can’t», she says frankly.

At the same time, she pursued modeling to «earn money, even if you only got paid in clothes», she says pragmatically. She did photo shoots, fashion shows, and trips without really thinking about it. She didn't want to «bite the hand that fed her», and would realize only much later the full extent of the toll this experience took on her. The «Shut up and look pretty», the memory of being sexually assaulted by a photographer, the feeling that her body was no longer her own. To the point where she weighed only 45 kilos. «That gave me a massive eating disorder, which I'm still trying to overcome. I was anorexic-bulimic for almost ten years. I'm not any more, but I'm still hypervigilant about what I eat, and I'm always careful not to let myself go.»

There was only one thing to do: get out of the fashion world as quickly as possible. Sometimes, it's all about meeting someone. In 2013, the actress auditioned for Les Héritiers, a film by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar inspired by a true story. It tells the story of how a teacher enrolls her most unruly pupils in a history competition, an experience that will change their worldview. Noémie Merlant was 24, but looked young enough to play the class rebel, wearing a leather jacket and with headphones on. On set, the filmmaker was impressed by her talent and intense presence.

Filming with Desplechin

A year later, another text message: «Would you be available to meet? I'd like to talk to you.» [Mention-Schaar] offered her the role of an average young girl, radicalized by jihadists, in Le Ciel attendra. To prepare for the role, Noémie Merlant met with teenage girls in the process of deradicalization, and tried to understand their mindset. «We found girls from all social backgrounds, cultures and religions. For many of these teenagers, there was the feeling of being misunderstood by society, but also frequently the beginnings of anxiety about death and shame. The desire for an ideal, for something unconditional, even in love stories.» The film was released in a volatile context, less than a year after the attacks on November 13. But the actress took a cleareyed view of this phenomenon, which she believed revealed youth in search of meaning.

This total commitment paid off: in 2017, she was nominated for a César in the Most Promising Actress category. In an interview filmed around this time, she appears smiling and fulfilled. Well aware, too, that the road ahead is fraught with pitfalls: «The hardest thing is to maintain self-confidence, even when you don't believe in yourself, or when you have periods of emptiness.»

What was Noémie Merlant dreaming of at this very moment? When asked about whom she’d like to collaborate with, she almost mechanically cited Arnaud Desplechin or Abdellatif Kechiche. She didn't know it yet, but the revolution would be born in a female microcosm. In 2019, the young woman played a painter hired to create the likeness of an aristocrat (Adèle Haenel) in Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Céline Sciamma's fourth feature is an incredibly intimate costume drama: a manor house, a cliff overlooking the sea and just four characters. At first, the actress was confused by the script: «Conflicts are nonexistent or immediately defused.» The absence of dominance hierarchies unsettled her: there were no saviors or anyone being saved; there were creators but no muses. «Just a gentleness and a wonderful equality. And in spite of everything, there’s an exciting story full of surprises. That's what makes it so powerful.» A head-on collision between two great actresses, where their eyes meet, sizing each other up, caressing each other. Like when Noémie Merlant’s character places a mirror between her lover's thighs, then sketches her self-portrait.

A box-office success across the Atlantic and a critical triumph, the film was in the running for ten awards at the 2020 Césars. But on the evening of the ceremony, one name brought all the tensions into focus: Roman Polanski. The director, who is currently facing several rape allegations, had been nominated in several categories for his film J'accuse. French cinema had never been so fractured. Adèle Haenel, who revealed that she had been molested as a child by director Christophe Ruggia, was in shock. For her, honoring Polanski was tantamount to «spitting in the face of all victims». No one heeded her: the filmmaker won the prize for best director, to the applause of part of the audience. «Someone shouted: “Well done!” recalls Noémie Merlant. It was clearly a response to Adèle's speaking out.» In protest, the cast of Portrait de la jeune fille en feu left the auditorium, after shouting a resounding «Shame!» In the wake of her commitment, Adèle Haenel announced her retirement from cinema in 2023. Has Noémie Merlant thought about following her example? «It wasn't easy to keep going, she acknowledges. I admire Adèle's courage. But staying is also a way of continuing the fight.» The actress has no illusions about the seventh art. No promotional newspeak, no generalities or shortcuts in her remarks. Even when she salutes the «extraordinary people» she has worked with, she qualifies that with «but that's not always the case». You get the sense that she is torn between the desire to talk about her difficult experiences and the fear of endless controversy. She mentions «casting directors, actors, who promise you things». How do you recognize them?  «Thanks to my experience as a model, I'm like a fish that spots the hook before the worm.»

Portrait de la jeune fille en feu «changed everything» for her. She set off in search of more meaningful roles. She reassessed her place not only in cinema, but also in the world. She reflected on «patriarchal oppression», confronted the traumas that resurfaced. «Even my relationship dynamic no longer suited me.» She left her partner at the time and moved in with Sanda Codreanu, a friend from the Cours Florent. She hesitates over the precise terms, but speaks of «escape» and «sanctuary». In this haven, words flow freely and bodies are liberated. They laugh as much as they talk about the violence they've suffered. She, who used to move from one relationship to another, embraced a new perspective on relationships. Why should romantic love count for more than friendships? Why force yourself to have sex to please the other person? Noémie Merlant now knows what she wants... or rather what she doesn't want. These days, she's in a «healthy, unstructured» relationship. She adds: «We're not afraid to experience things separately. The important thing is that each of us is fulfilled.»

The Cate Blanchett method

Recovery also involves the body. Onscreen nudity doesn't bother her. «There are fewer and fewer actresses who agree to undress, which I understand. But I don't have any issue with it, so I'm happy to go for it. I think there are things to explore and advocate for in this freedom.» She asserts her willingness to explore eroticism and sexuality through the eyes of other directors. Female desire in all its forms is a common thread running through her filmography: she develops an attraction to an amusement park ride in Jumbo, plays a writer infatuated with a libertine photographer in Curiosa.

For a long time, sex scenes had been reduced to a few lines in a script and improvised on set. In Jacques Audiard's Les Olympiades, the ballet of bodies is carefully designed. Playing a thirtysomething woman who becomes fascinated by a camgirl, Noémie Merlant was coached by choreographer Stéphanie Chêne. She learned to abandon dialogue in favor of her gaze and body language. For the first time, she thought about her character's movements. «It allows you to feel safe and to work with respect above all else. And so you can go further, seeking precision through imagination.» Farewell to the good little girl. She avoids tyrannical filmmakers, those who push the actors' limits. At one point, when a director tried to manipulate her to extract emotions, she almost walked off the set. «I made him understand that I was making this film above all for pleasure and for creativity, and that I couldn't accomplish anything with that kind of method. In the end, it turned out well, but I wish I hadn’t had to go through that.» It was like revenge for all those outbursts she’d had to swallow.

Behind the camera, Noémie Merlant has also chosen irreverence. In her second feature, Les Femmes au balcon, she imagines a Marseilles-style Rear Window, somewhere between comedy and outright gore. The pitch: three girlfriends have fun spying on their mysterious neighbor across the street, with whom they develop a relationship that goes beyond exhibitionism. It was difficult for her to find an actress who would agree to film naked, until she came across the luminous Souheila Yacoub. One question nagged at her: how to film a body without sexualizing it? First, by disarming the issue with humor. «Right from the start, I give the viewer a heads-up: “Here you go, boobs. Now that you've had a good look at them, let's move on.”» She also uses the expression «shirtless» for women, a way of denouncing double standards. There's no idealizing of her heroines' bodies. She films them in their everyday lives, in positions that are not always flattering, and welcomes a touch of vulgarity. «It's a form of sincerity as well.»

Taking risks is finally paying off. In the last couple of years, Noémie Merlant has turned a corner in her career. Like Marion Cotillard, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Juliette Binoche, she is now sought out by foreign filmmakers. In 2021, Todd Field sent her the script for Tár. And for a significant role. She plays the assistant to a famous orchestra conductor, starring opposite Cate Blanchett – and speaking perfect English. An intimidating experience? Idolization is not her style: «It's important to demystify people who are in the limelight.» Still, she took the time to observe Cate Blanchett in action. The way she handled a complicated sequence shot or filmed the same scene twenty times without complaining. Her ability to juggle lessons: piano, German, baton handling. «There's no mystery. It's all about the love of the craft, precision and the quest to relinquish yourself to the role.» She adds, a bit idealistically: «Often the ones who succeed are also good people... Not always, but I prefer to tell myself that.»

Yet Noémie Merlant has no desire to sacrifice her whole life for her profession. For a long time, she took one role after another, as if for fear of missing out or being forgotten. These days, her priorities have changed. «I want to do Qua-li-ty», she says with a smile and a funny inflection. Wouldn't this be a good time to enjoy it, too? Her financial situation now allows her to help her family. She has adapted her house to accommodate her father, who has been in a wheelchair since having a stroke in 2009. She has helped her parents find a new home, and paid for outside help to relieve her «very exhausted» mother. How does her father view her success today? «He's very, very, very proud. He tells himself that he was lucky, because it might not have worked out.» He follows every step of her career, keeping track of every press article. «He's definitely going to be handing out Vanity Fair to all his friends.» You can sense her admiration for this close-knit clan, for their ability to face adversity. A few years ago, she took out her camera to film them in their daily lives, around Christmas time. She has started editing, but still has some work to do. Recently, she went back to the rushes, but hasn't managed to finalize the project. Perhaps it's too intimate. I propose a hypothesis: what if she had primarily sought to freeze time? She continues: «There's something interesting about the way they talk, the way they live, with a lot of humor and joy in spite of everything. I want to share this story, because it can do a lot of people good.» Could this be the next step toward freedom?

Inspirational Queer Muslims you need know about them

Tuways

Tuways or Tuwais was a renowned Mukhannath individual in the early days of Islamic Arabia. His/Her real name was Abu Abd al-Munim Isa Abdallah al-Dhāib. In Arabic, the name Tuways or Tuwais means peacock. They were born in 632 AD in Medina, on the same day Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) passed away. According to various scholars, Tuways is often described as one of the leading Mukhannath musicians of Medina during his/her lifetime. He/She served as a mawlā of the Banū Mak̲h̲zūm, under the patronage of Arwā bt. Kurayz, the mother of the Caliph ʿUt̲h̲mān b. ʿAffān.

Tuways initially gained recognition by performing melodies learned from Persian captives & went on to become a celebrated musician during the Rashidun Caliphate, the first Islamic Caliphate. According to some accounts, he/she was a devout queer Muslim and was never blamed for his/her queerness.

al-Dalal

al-Dalal was a Mukhannath poet & musician, based in Medinah. Not much is known about his life. Tuways was his/her master and he/she was one of the favourite pupil of Tuways. al-Dalal is often portrayed as a witty but sometimes crude male who "loved women" but disliked to have sex with them. Few accounts report that he was a bisexual, had sexual encounter with both woman & her groom.

During the reing of Umayyad Caliph Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik, al-Dalal, along with other Mukhannathun were persecuted for their boldness. They were forcefully castrated. They were enslaved by Umayyads.

Abu Nawas

Abū Nuwās (also known as:Abū Nuwās al-Salamī, Abū 'Alī) was an openly gay poet, and the foremost representative of the modern (muhdath) poetry that developed during the first years of Abbasid Caliphate. He also entered the folkloric tradition, appearing several times in One Thousand and One Nights.

He attended a Qur’an school and became a Hafiz at a young age.His youthful good looks and innate charisma attracted the attention of the Kufan poet, Abu Usama Waliba ibn al-Hubab al-Asadi, who took Abu Nuwas to Kufa as a young apprentice. Waliba recognized in Abu Nuwas his talent as a poet and encouraged him toward this vocation, but was also attracted sexually to the young man and may have had erotic relations with him. Abu Nuwas's relationships with adolescent boys when he had matured as a man seem to mirror his own experience with Waliba. Abu Nuwas wrote poetry in multiple genres; Abu Nuwas’s diwan, his poetry collection, was divided by genre: panegyric poems, elegies, invective, courtly love poems on men and women, poems of penitence, hunting poems, and wine poems. His erotic lyric poetry, which is often homoerotic, is known from over 500 poems and fragments.

Mahmud of Ghazni

Yamin-ud-Dawla Abul Qasim Mahmud commonly known as “Mahmud of Ghazni” or “Mahmud Ghaznavi”. He was known as a great sultan of Ghaznavid Empire. But he is also controversial for his invasion in indian subcontinent & treatment of non-muslims. Besides, he is regarded as icon of queer love.

Mahmud was a bisexual muslim. Mahmud had 9 wives and innumerable concubines as well as male slaves. Mahmud of Ghazni's name is often associated with a man named “Malik Ayaz”. Malik Ayaz was a handsome Turkic-Georgian slave brought by Sultan Mahmud. He was a very close companion of Mahmud; was very devoted to the him and fullfilled his all wishes.

The relationship between Mahmud and Ayaz is highly celebrated in Persian poetry and literature.There are a set of 6 poems by Farid al-Din Attar that are inspired by this relationship. Sa'di, a 13th-century poet includes 2 stories about the lovers in his best-known work, Bustan, a collection of reflections on human nature. The chapter “Concerning Love” describes someone complaining that Mahmud’s favourite slave “possesses no beauty.” Upon hearing this, Mahmud responds, “My love, O sir, is for virtue, not for form or stature.” The second story depicts the king travelling with some of his men when an overturned chest of pearls is discovered; all except Ayaz go after the pearls. Questioned by Mahmud about the possibility of gaining riches, Ayaz explains he wants nothing. “I walked in haste behind thee, I do not occupy myself with riches away from thy service.” Nidhami-I-Arudi, a 12th-century Ghaznavid court poet describes the well-known and famous love of Sultan Mahmud for Ayaz, though he explains that Mahmud, being a “pious and God-fearing man,” wrestled with this love. One night after drinking a lot of wine, Mahmud couldn’t ignore Ayaz’s beauty: “Thereupon love plucked the reins of self-restraint from the hands of his endurance, and lover-like he drew him to himself.”

Zahīr ud-Dīn Muhammad (Babar)

Zahīr ud-Dīn Muhammad commonly known as Babar or Babur. Babar was the founder of the Mughal Empire. He was a Bisexual & was also the first queer ruler in Mughal Dynasty. Babur's religious and philosophical stances are characterized as humanistic. Babur was an acclaimed writer, who had a profound love for literature. His library was one of his most beloved possessions that he always carried around with him, & books were one of the treasures he searched for in new conquered lands. During his 47-year life, Babur left a rich literary and scientific heritage. He authored his famous memoir the Bāburnāma, as well as beautiful lyrical works or ghazals, treatises on Muslim jurisprudence (Mubayyin), poetics (Aruz risolasi), music, and a special calligraphy, known as khatt-i Baburi.

He married multiple times but had little attraction towards women. Babur had an affair with his male slave named Baburi Andijani (also known as Baburi). Babur rescued him from the Uzbek camp market in 1499. Babur mentioned his lover's name several times in the "Babarnama" and expressed his feelings towards Baburi without fear. Babur even wrote several Persian romantic poems about same gender love. It is also claimed that Babur built Babri Masjid as a token of love for Baburi Andijani (well, I am not pretty sure)

Maryam Khatoon Molkara

Maryam Khatoon Molkara was a well-known transgender rights campaigner, broadcaster & volunteer in Iran, where she is widely recognized as a matriarch of trans communities. Maryam was later instrumental in obtaining a letter which acted as a fatwa enabling sex reassignment surgery to exist as part of a legal framework. After the Islamic Revolution, Maryam faced intense backlash due to her gender identity. She underwent arrests, and death threats. She was fired from her job at the Iranian National Radio and Television, forced to wear masculine clothing, injected with male hormones against her will, and detained in a psychiatric institution. Later she was released by the help of religious leaders.She also fought for legal recognition of trans people in Iran.

In 2007, she founded the Iranian Society to Support Individuals with Gender Identity Disorder (Persian: حمایت از بیماران مبتلا به اختلالات هویت جنسی ایران) the first state-approved organization for transgender rights in Iran. Before this, she used her own property in Karaj to help other transgender people receive legal advice and medical care, including post-operative care. She continued advocating for other transgender people and bailing them out of prison after they were arrested, even knowing she would likely face violence for doing so.

Sally Mursi

Sally Mursi was an Egyptian transsexual entertainer.She was most controversial figure in Egypt for her sex reassignment surgery.Sally was born in a religious muslim family.Sally was a student of Al-Azhar, which is renowned as one of the world's most prestigious universities for Islamic learning. She completed her sex reassignment surgery in 1988. When Al-Azhar's Medical School for Boys came to know about her sex-change operation, they refused to accept her as their student.

She was also accused of trying to get out of military service and was ordered to report for induction into the army. Army doctors examined her, and finding that she was a woman, concluded that Sally was not medically fit for military service.Sally was refused a transfer to Al-Azhar’s Medical School for Girls. So she filed a case against Al-Azhar Medical School later which stirred a nationwide controversy. Despite going through many problems, she didn't stop her fight for her rights.

At that time Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi, Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar, issued a fatwa that Sally's change was necessary for her health but that before the operation she should for one year dress, behave and comply with all obligations of Islam for women (except for marital obligations).This fatwa was the first Sunni ruling on sex reaffirmation surgery. Eventually Sally won 2 legal rulings against the Al-Azhar school, but it ignored them, and also blacklisted her at other medical schools.So she completed her education from Cairo University on literature.Sally also legally married with a man in Egypt. But still transsexuals like sally faced discrimination & harassment in Egypt.

Bülent Ersoy

Bülent Ersoy is a popular transsexual singer and actress of Turkey. Often nicknamed Diva by her fans. Ersoy's some of the famous hits are "Ümit Hırsızı", "Geceler", "Beddua" , "Maazallah", "Biz Ayrılamayız" and "Sefam olsun". Ersoy Ersoy began her career as a male singer, in the genre of Turkish classical music.Her grandparents played classical Turkish music and she first took private lessons and then studied at Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. Already one of Turkey's most popular singers and actors, she gained international notoriety in April 1981 after having sex reassignment surgery in London by a British plastic surgeon. She kept the name "Bülent" even though it is a typically masculine name. After the operation, Ersoy found herself in opposition to 1980 Turkish coup d'état of Kenan Evren. In a crackdown on "social deviance," Ersoy's public performances were banned along with those of other transgender people. To circumvent the ban, she petitioned the Turkish courts to legally recognize her as a woman.The petition was rejected in January 1982. Days later, she attempted suicide. In 1983, she left Turkey in protest of the Evren regime's repressive policies and continued her career in Germany. Along with her musical career, she made several Turkish movies in Germany.Later Ersoy came back to turkey when Evren left office and many of his policies were rescinded.

Walking down from the aisle of carved sandstone, on both sides bordered with white camellias, the pretty white flowers that have been the pride of the Royal garden, the favorite of the first queen of the palace, Rani Chandrani, the beloved of the greatest warrior to ever rule Amargarh, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. All these flowers were a gift to the Rani, as a symbol of compassion and loyalty, and were all over the boundaries of the bageecha, surrounding huge marble fountains, where white doves dunked and bathed and flew away letting a shower from their feathers. The aisle led to the sandstone built shade, with hand carved see through jali, there laid a diwan and Avathara came and sat there.

She had always admired the beauty of this garden, the white all around, shined brighter in the setting sun, the birds let out a melody, the old sunken love gleamed with the glowing whites around. Avathara always came to wonder how the romantic legend was still alive here. She peeked through the jali at the sunset, roamed around, then sat back again. Just to think clearly had she come out from her room, once for a while away from the Royal duties and obligations, so that she could see things through. In few minutes the pillars were lit and the helper of her dadisa, her grandmother entered from the aisle to the steps of the shade, bowed, "Rani sa asks you to come inside as it's dark". She nodded, as the help left, she sighed, looking around again, left the bageecha, expecting herself to come here once more to think through.

She was immediately rushed in to her room, and shown the dress she had to wear for the evening gala, with the neighbouring royalties and rich class allies. It was an annual event now, as no one went battling with the neighboring kingdom's in the 21st century. People from different rajgharanas gathered every year, around 8 Royal families. But Avathara cared less, being more bothered about her college starting next week, she was stuck in the thought of right and wrong, should she prefer a career or the inherited responsibilities. Whatever it shall be, she was looking forward to her college debut.

It was dark enough by now, the palace was glittery gold with all the lighting striking against the magnificent walls, the hallways were decorated and a savoury aroma was arising from the main kitchen. Seemed like a big deal and quite convincing to withdraw Avathara's attention away from her dilemma towards the grand evening. Holding her gigantic beaded skirt delicately she floated across the corridor reaching towards the front lawn where the guests had started to gather. Raja Ratnaval, one of the old friends of her grandfather, Raja Ranjeet II, was found introducing his young prince to her dadi sa. Avathara rushed next to her and greeted the friendly Raja and his young son, only to know that the young prince was thirty, not so young and was seeking to ask for her hand. Before the conversation became focused on the not so young prince and princess of Amargarh, Avathara came to her own rescue, leaving all telling them she had to check up on certain special arrangements for the night. She was heading towards the evening orchestra, she had decided the ragas that had to be played tonight and wanted to see everything was alright. She was a trained classical artist, obviously she would be wanting to present the best to her guests, she always tries to give her best, for all what she is capable of, and this didn't include being a pleasing wife to someone, that too to someone that much older than her. And it was not that marrying at a young age was a problem to her, but it was one right person she yearned for, about whom she has forever believed, would befriend her all life and make it easy for her to love. She never wanted a bondage, of course she had heard of Rani Chandrani's true love. She kept such hope for herself too.

Her beaded attire and the pastel silk glistened in the lights, making her an eye catcher. She was Avathara- meant 'reflection', she was named by her father because she carried the charisma and beauty of her mother, like it's a mirror image. But she found it half a truth, as has been quite distant from her parents since she turned three. They don't live here at the palace, they usually visited her once every month but from the past 10 years they have met her only thrice. Where they were, how they were there own their own, what they were upto back then and even now hasn't been clear to her. She had been clueless and curious about this forever.

Though she was breathtaking herself but she was oblivious and rather unbothered of the fact. As she walked back from the orchestra she bumped into a tall feminine figure, draped in a heavy lehenga, delicate hand work, the lady radiated nothing but elegance. She turned her focus to the face of the person, only to realize it was Kanika, the golden city's princess, her childhood friend. Avathara heaved looking at her gorgeous girl and went straight for a hug.

"Missed you a lot princess"

"You should be lying when you don't even want me to know that you are leaving next week", said Kanika moving away to give a sarcastic frown.

" Miss don't be mad at me I was so confused by myself, what's happening, what should I do, would I just end up doing something wrong out there alone, how would I...... "

"Calm yourself"

" I have been waiting to meet you, you understand me, you always do"

"Yeah, I do.... " They hugged each other again, Kanika giving a right assuring squeeze to her. Avathara pulled away smiling and headed towards her grandmother beckoning her, turning around she gestured to Kanika,"Meet me after the party".

The grand event ended near to ten o'clock, the two girls almost tottering in their bulky dresses, their way back to Avathara's chamber after a lavish dinner. Kanika mostly stayed back here for atleast a night when she visited. They entered into the suite and rushed towards the bed, laying at their back giggling, like they always did. Breeze swirled the silk curtain, the waning moon was lighting the room floor. Avathara turned to her side to face Kanika. Kanika tilted her head saying, "You have something up? "

"I just feel, I have this feeling you know, though I have lived away from here for camps and events, but always with people that I have known. Either it's the cousins or dadi and dada, earlier, or it has been your family. I never had to directly deal with people our there. And though I know now I get a chance for that, but, it's just, so peculiar, being on tour own and so far from home... "

"Whoa, miss, that's not a huge deal, I mean you going to college is, but being out in the world by yourself is what everyone experience somewhere, and they really are able to get through it. You will handle it. "

" I know, I would find a way somehow, I mean I got to and I would at last, how bad can a college be? Not at all, it's just getting along with people, I have null idea about it, I always meet people through family "

"That is just how you think, leave college people aren't that bad either girl, and you are a princess you might end up getting some princess treatment too" Kanika nudged her chuckling.

"No... Won't that be naive and rude, to demand certain behav-"

"You are so loose with this topic. I meant maybe you find some friends, maybe a girl, maybe a boy, maybe your lover boy-"

Avathara shooted a frowned glare at Kanika, for her to tease her that way.

"Why do you pull my leg, I am not going there for all of this. Even if I crave love doesn't mean that I would go hunting for it, it would happen when it has to. I am more focused on my degree, I really want to know myself through things, try out my potential. I don't think I have time for anything else"

Kanika turned to her side and cupped Avathara's face, "I never said that you are going out to try you love luck, I know you always aim your target, but I have a strong feeling, someone's waiting for you."

Avathara went to cup kanika's face, and giving her head a shake said, "You are excessive sometimes you know, I guess you should sleep. "

Both started to laugh and slowly dozed off amidst their conversation.

Whether that trip to the cinema is a chance to escape, to learn, to be entertained, or to be moved, good movies meet that intent. But the truly great movies transport us and even transform us.

They often accomplish this on an emotional level — gripping us and taking us along for the ride. Or they can do it through stunning visuals and technical prowess. The best films know how to do them both. Here are the 10 films from 2022 that drew me in the most.

10. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Dean Fleischer Camp

Based on the series of shorts of the same name, this full-length stop-motion feature from the creative minds of Dean Flesicher Camp and Jenny Slate is surprisingly the year’s most charming and heartwarming film. In a year where intense dramas dominated, and when even lighter fare had a darker tone, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a lighthearted, humorous, and yet profound exposition on belonging, family, grief, and modern culture.

9. L’événement (Happening)

Audrey Diwan

Set in 1960s France, when abortion is still illegal, a promising university student has her life upended when her doctor informs her that she’s pregnant. Without feeling didactic, Happening presents an honest, intense, and often distressing reminder of what such a world looked like for women. Produced before the repeal of Roe v. Wade in the United States, the film could not have been released at a more poignant time.

8. 헤어질 결심 Heeojil gyeolsim (Decision to Leave)

Park Chan-wook

A talented detective forms an unexpected relationship with a murder suspect in this romance-thriller-murder mystery. It’s stylistically beautiful, gripping, and sexy without ever needing to show anything sexual. The performances are usually subtle with a few moments of appropriate melodrama. Decision to Leave exemplifies Chan-wook’s penchant for storytelling, managing to say so much in every shot.

7. Women Talking

Sarah Polley

At times, Women Talking feels more like a stage play presented on screen. But it never compromises the film’s cinematic beauty. Instead, it immerses you into the dialogue and the bleak reality of life for these women. Masterful performances necessarily help the intense and heavy dialogue resonate with the viewer. In my mind, the biggest error of this year’s Oscars is the omission of Polley as a Best Director nominee.

6. Aftersun

Charlotte Wells

Charlotte Wells’ first feature-length film is a touching exploration of belonging, depression, memory, parental love, and preadolescence. Headed by excellent performances by Paul Mescal and Frankie Coro, Aftersun engages you from start to finish, slowly revealing its hand but never giving away everything. It’s a slow boil that doesn’t quite hit you until you the end, which really is the point.

5. The Banshees of Inisherin

Martin McDonagh

Banshees is one of the year’s best examples of storytelling. Indeed, its script is its strongest asset, brilliantly juxtaposing comedy with tragedy. The film also boasts one of the strongest casts of the year, with exceptional performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. Add in beautiful shots of Ireland and an Oscar-nominated musical score, you’ve got yourself an all-around winner.

4. The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg

I’ve always been partial to Spielberg, but I truly believe his recent semi-autobiographical work is a masterclass in directing. He infuses each frame with meaning and beauty. The movie’s most pivotal emotional moment (when Sammy discovers his mother’s secret) is accomplished without any speech whatsoever, told instead through the back-and-forth of raw film reel. Spielberg helps us fall in love with the movies all over again. So beautifully shot, they should be studying The Fabelmans in film schools for years.

3. Everything Everywhere All at Once

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert

This year’s likely Best Picture Oscar winner is deserving of the many accolades it has received so far. The most wild, creative, and technically brilliant film of the year, EEAAO weaves through different universes, demonstrating a mastery of styles in a multitude of genres. The film is perfectly cast, its four Oscar-nominated performers leading the way. It’s funny, heart-wrenching, thought-provoking, action-packed, well… everything… all at once.

2. Tár

Todd Field

As a brilliant, accomplished, but problematic symphony conductor, Cate Blanchett is note-perfect in a career-best performance. She’s essential to the film, as you can’t imagine anyone else doing the role justice. Indeed, Field wrote the role for her. Some have reduced the film to a commentary on cancel culture, but that is a gross oversimplification. Tár is intelligent, nuanced, intriguing, and beautifully shot.

The close friendship between two 13-year-old boys is torn apart, first when social influences get in the way, and then ultimately by a decision with permanent consequences. Lukas Dhont’s second film (after 2018’s Girl) perfectly captures the love and fragility of boyhood friendships and honestly portrays the unpredictability of grief. Close never preaches and never tells you how to feel. Beautifully shot, heart-wrenching, and emotionally gripping, Close confronts some of the most intense challenges of youth with a maturity that escapes most coming-of-age films. Augmented by stellar performances, Close is highlighted by the debut of Eden Dambrine, who gives the best performance I have ever witnessed by a young actor.
