Physics Gets Easier, Then Harder
If you studied physics in high school, it's not as hard as it seems. If you studied physics at university, it's much harder than it seems.
Some people have stories about an inspiring teacher who introduced them to their life’s passion. My story is different: I became a physicist due to a famously bad teacher. My high school was, in general, a good place to learn science, but physics was the exception. The teacher at the time had a bad reputation, and while I don’t remember exactly why I do remember his students didn’t end up…

Howdy! I'm Kae! My pronouns are They/them! I'm pretty new to self-shipping but I'm ready to have fun! I'll be working on this blog on and off, but I'm usually not super active. I always love receiving asks and messages though! I'm ok with sharing any of my f/os! Let me know if I interact with you and you aren't chill with sharing! 🫀
Majority of my ships are platonic except for a select few!
Right now I'm really into The Aquabats! My one queerplatonic/romantic F/O is Jimmy the Robot from the Super Show!

1998: The Aquabats had a mini pilot deal with Buena Vista TV(Disney). I️ learned a lot from that experience. One thing was about too many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the broth. Disney had a grip of useless execs involved and we had our own team of people with ideas involved as well as Bobcat Goldthwaite on board as director. I️ was titled “creative producer”, though really more excited about acting (because that was my background) as the Professor. However, I️ soon found myself designing things like sets and props. Here is a concept drawing I️ made for the Aquabats’ underwater laboratory. The thing is, someone at Disney suggested we should use this state-of-the-art technology so the Aquabats show could literally take place in one of my drawings. Okay... well, I️ recall late nights working with this 3D team drawing every scene in the pilot. Though flattered, I️ feel this was one of the fatal elements that made the pilot so hard to watch. The following images are examples of the “movie magic” being applied in so many realistic 3D angles. 😫 #doingscience

A Significant Calculation
Particle physicists have a weird relationship to journals. We publish all our results for free on a website called the arXiv, and when we need to read a paper that’s the first place we look. But we still submit our work to journals, because we need some way to vouch that we’re doing good work. Explicit numbers (h-index, impact factor) are falling out of favor, but we still need to demonstrate…

The Bystander Effect for Reviewers
A moderating take on last week's post. Even if we don't read the journals, peer review has an important social role.
I probably came off last week as a bit of an extreme “journal abolitionist”. This week, I wanted to give a couple caveats. First, as a commenter pointed out, the main journals we use in my field are run by nonprofits. Physical Review Letters, the journal where we publish five-page papers about flashy results, is run by the American Physical Society. The Journal of High-Energy Physics, where we…

HAMLET-Physics 2024
First conference in a long time, but I had an excuse!
Back in January, I announced I was leaving France and leaving academia. Since then, it hasn’t made much sense for me to go to conferences, even the big conference of my sub-field or the conference I organized. I did go to a conference this week, though. I had two excuses: The conference was here in Copenhagen, so no travel required. The conference was about machine learning. HAMLET-Physics,…

Physics’ Unique Nightmare
Halloween is coming up, so let’s talk about the most prominent monster of the physics canon, the nightmare scenario. Not to be confused with the D&D Nightmare, which once was a convenient source of infinite consumable items for mid-level characters. Right now, thousands of physicists search for more information about particle physics beyond our current Standard Model. They look at data from the…

No Unmoved Movers
Economists must find academics confusing. When investors put money in a company, they have some control over what that company does. They vote to decide a board, and the board votes to hire a CEO. If the company isn’t doing what the investors want, the board can fire the CEO, or the investors can vote in a new board. Everybody is incentivized to do what the people who gave the money want to…

What Referees Are For
This week, we had a colloquium talk by the managing editor of the Open Journal of Astrophysics. The Open Journal of Astrophysics is an example of an arXiv overlay journal. In the old days, journals shouldered the difficult task of compiling scientists’ work into a readable format and sending them to university libraries all over the world so people could stay up to date with the work of distant…

Getting Started in Saclay
I started work this week in my new position, as a permanent researcher at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of CEA Paris-Saclay. I’m still settling in, figuring out how to get access to the online system and food at the canteen and healthcare. Things are slowly getting into shape, with a lot of running around involved. Until then, I don’t have a ton of time to write (and am dedicating most of…
