Quote
Something happens during the finals of the National Bee that you are not going to see coming, and it may move you as deeply as it did me. I've often said it's not sadness that touches me the most in a movie, but goodness. Under enormous pressure, at a crucial moment, Akeelah does something good. Its results I will leave you to discover.

Screenwriting is a very difficult thing to master. It requires both halves of your brain. You need that artistic, impulsive, creative aspect - and you also need that objective part as well, because a screenplay is precise.

Press/Video: ‘Brian Banks’ First Look
youtube
DEADLINE – The Los Angeles Film Festival is on the move from June to this month, where it opens on Thursday with the world premiere of the music documentary Echo in the Canyon. Over the course of the next week, the festival will be offering an array of cinematic programming of all kinds including several more world premiere features.
One of those is the locally based Brian Banks, which marks a return to narrative filmmaking by director Tom Shadyac, whose most recent work was the spiritual documentary I Am in 2010 , and whose most recent commercial film was 2007’s Evan Almighty. A powerful and inspiring film, Brian Banks is a decided departure for the man whose filmography includes Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, Dragonfly and Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor. Independently made, Brian Banks stars Aldis Hodge in the title role alog with Greg Kinnear, Sherri Shepherd, Melanie Liburd, Xosha Roquemore and Tiffany Dupont. It is produced by Shivani Rawat, Monica Levinson and Amy Baer.
The very timely and true story revolves around Brian Banks, an All-American football player already committed to USC when he is falsely accused of rape during his junior year of high school. Despite maintaining his innocence, he is railroaded through the system and sentenced to a decade of prison, parole, and registering as a sex offender. Driven by the same thoughtfulness and focus that propelled him as an athlete, Banks continues to fight to clear his name, ultimately partnering with the California Innocence Project.
Written by Doug Atchison, the movie premieres Saturday at LAFF and is one of the festival’s top distribution prospects.
Press/Video: ‘Brian Banks’ First Look was originally published on Aldis Hodge Online

Tidak pernah tidur
Seorang presiden A.S. dikatakan telah tidur selama masa jabatannya!

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 112 minutes of ‘Akeelah and the Bee’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

Pixar has the market cornered with ‘family friendly animated films’ --- No one really has done that for live action ones. But if there is a formula to follow (or at least one approach to try)...it would be whatever Doug Atchison.
It’s well cast...written and executed. 15 years later...I’d still put it at a masterpiece level (8/10)
PS: Though the whole #MeToo discussion did make me uncomfortable with just Akeelah at Larabee’s house during my rewatch. But of course...I know there was none of that in this....I mean has Laurence Fishburne played questionable roles?
PPS: I just read Roger Ebert’s review of the film...and apparently the next on my queue is 1993's 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' . I remember watching it and moving on based on the impression I got (it was just a film that relied on melodrama --- about someone missing)...so...I will give it another go. Making sure that I hit ‘play’ when the conditions are optimal (while consuming a meal...or cooking something that takes 2 hours...maybe?)

HIGHLIGHT:
INT. USC (AUDITORIUM) - DAY
REGIONAL JUDGE Next Speller please!
JAVIER doesn't move and stares at the door where AKEELA, WELCH, TANYA and LARABEE exited.
REGIONAL JUDGE Come on up to the mic, please.
JAVIER turns to the judges and starts moving towards the mic. Slowly. Inch by inch.
REGIONAL JUDGE A little faster.
JAVIER moves a bit slower. Still taking as much time as he can.
REGIONAL JUDGE Come on.
Another look towards those double doors.
EXT. USC (AUDITORIUM ENTRANCE) - CONTINUOUS
LARABEE I apologise, Mrs. Anderson, if we've contributed to any anguish you may be feeling.
TANYA just holds her steely gaze.
TANYA And who are you exactly?
He takes a step.
LARABEE My name is Joshua Larabee, ma'am.
She looks him up and down. Determined not to let down her guard. She gives WELCH some side-eye.
LARABEE And I've been...Well I've been helping Akeela prepare herself for the spelling bee.
He glances at the entrant.
WELCH Akeela's been getting extra school credit for working with Dr. Larabee.
TANYA glances back at the principal, taken aback.
WELCH We designed an entire program specifically for her.
She turns back to her daughter and shakes her head.
TANYA Why didn't you tell me about this?
AKEELA Mama, I hated going behind your back. But every time I bought up the bee, you didn't want to hear it.
The mother's eyebrow shoots up. Is that sass, daughter?
AKEELA I didn't know what to do.
INT. USC (AUDITORIUM) - CONTINUOUS
JAVIER Can I get the pronunciation again?
He eyes the judges. Earnest. Innocent.
REGIONAL JUDGE He's given it to you 5 times. You need to speel the word.
Number 67 glances at the doors. No activity still.
JAVIER Could you use it in a sentence?
REGIONAL JUDGE He's already used it in a sentence.
JAVIER I mean, a different sentence than he used before?
--------
My verdict of the film: 8/10
Link to the timestamp commentary: None (Maybe if there are requests...)
A Formal Review: Only by request
More of my comments about the film: No plans (unless requested)

Based on a TRUE story. Scripted by Doug Atchison (“Akeelah and the Bee”), "Brian Banks" is a dramatization of the true story of its title character, who was headed to the University of Southern California and a likely pro football career before his life was derailed in 2002 by a false accusation of sexual assault and kidnapping. He was exonerated in 2012 after his case was accepted by attorney Justin Brooks (played in the film by Greg Kinnear) of the California Innocence Project, a San Diego-based nonprofit. "Brian Banks" employed 149 local cast and crew members — in addition to the hundreds more who showed up as extras for various crowd scenes — when it was filmed over 40 shooting days between Sept. 25 and Nov. 18, 2017.
