“You ever play?” Duke didn't turn to face him; he was studying the handwriting as if to etch it into his mind.

Cliff shook his head. A few of the bars he had stopped in to warm up during his travels had boards mounted to the wall, and there were sometimes a few people wagering a friendly game of darts.

“I don't know how the scoring works, but I've seen people play.”

Duke retrieved a handsome emerald-colored set of darts and stepped back to a worn piece of tape on the floor Cliff hadn't been aware of until then. Duke hesitated before handing him a set of his own, twirling one of the darts in his fingers with a sad smile.

“I'll go first and give you an idea of how it goes.”

Cliff's eyes were drawn to the darts that had been given to him. Holographic purple butterflies and a stylized capital letter a decorated the flights; it couldn’t be more obvious who used them most frequently.

“Alright, it's been a hot minute for me, so I'm gonna warm up. Used to play all the time at Doug's back in the day. Me, Manna, Jeff, Sasha, Rod... Heck, even Gotz and Hilda would join sometimes. We'd play regularly.” He twirled the dart by the barrel between his thumb and index fingers, watching the flight reflect the light from above them. “Ah, simpler times, for sure...”

He threw his first dart and Cliff wasn't sure if it was a particularly good throw or not. It was closer to the center of the target, but the curse mumbled under Duke's breath indicated that didn't necessarily make it a good shot. He waited for Duke to explain the scoring, but his mind was clearly focused on something else.

“Got a little harder to play once everyone started having kids... Once Ann got a little older and more active, it was hard to keep her out of the bar at night. Poor girl would get nightmares near nightly, so Doug tried to keep her behind the bar where he could keep an eye on her.”

Another toss. The smirk on Duke's lips told Cliff it was a decent one.

“Ann is Doug's daughter, but... she's got a lot of honorary godparents. We all look after our own, so when Felicity passed, everyone did their best to help Doug keep it together. Losing a family member... it's hell.”

Duke threw the final dart and it missed the board completely, landing right between the eyes of the illustration of a snowman on the calendar.

“Sorry there, Frosty. Guess we're havin' snow cones tonight.” He retrieved the dart and turned around, his dark eyes boring into Cliff. “But I guess I don't need to tell you how rough it is, huh?”

Cliff's knees felt a bit weak. He had recalled exactly how his mother's voice had sounded, something he had previously thought lost. “It's been on my mind a lot lately,” he confessed.

“So I've heard. Parents and sister, huh? I imagine that's a bit of a one-two punch...”

The chill of the wine cellar crept into Cliff's veins. “How do you know that?”

I decided to take up the open tag on @gwens-fiction's version of this, so here goes!

[QUICK NOTE: I wrote this back at the very beginning of this blog and just... forgot to publish it? I'm telling you, my brain is gone and is never coming back. Here it is, though. All of these are from Impish. Apparently, I have never once written the word "dusk" in my life, because I couldn't find it anywhere.]

Haphazard

So I move to the next fridge over, which is full of little plastic tubs of ingredients. One is full of canned mushrooms that have been emptied into the clear container, juice and all. Another is full of haphazard stacks of bright red pepperoni. It sits on a shelf next to a container of gray sausage that looks simultaneously wet and chalky.

Fun

The outside of the building is painted with vertical red and white stripes like some sort of big top; the neon signs decorating the pole out front spin. I squint up at them, only slightly confused. They're shaped like clowns, with giant heads of curly orange hair and bright red circular noses. The front doors are just as bad. They resemble fun house mirror doors. Clowns are everywhere. I can’t escape them.

Wood

Someone knocks on the door to the bathroom. Doug immediately starts speaking through the wood. "Mikey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. We're the same, you know? I’m sorry."

Dusk

Moon

By the time we get to the hotel, the sun has almost finished setting and I think Roux has almost forgiven me. It paints a picture of oranges, pinks, and deep, rich blues across the cloudy sky. The moon is peeking out of its hiding spot in the ever-rotating sky.

Meagan Maynard is the daughter of Captain Elaine Maynard. She's never met her biological father and thinks of Detective Lou Ransone as the closest thing she'll ever have to one. She had a near death experience while at the pier with her best friend during the tsunami, and it led her to make the decision to become a therapist who specializes in helping first responders one day. She's currently a sophomore at UCLA.

Amanda Ryder is the former sister-in-law of Judd Ryder. She divorced Judd's eldest brother in a very chaotic and messy fashion, and despite all of their endless drama, her ex-husband is still attempting to win her back. She's never held an actual job before, and her divorce settlement has fortunately kept her in the comfortable lifestyle she's grown very much accustomed to over the years.

Adrianna Carpenter is the ex-wife of Ethan Carpenter. She’s an interior designer and the mother of two young children, Kayden and Kinsley. She struggles with being the wife of a first responder, as well as a mother. She’s a work in progress.

Katherine Callahan is a former army nurse who returned to Chicago once her time in the service was over and became a doctor. She's currently a general surgeon at MED, and she absolutely can't stand fireworks, because they take her back to certain places of her time overseas she'd rather not remember.

Madison Ruzek is the daughter of Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess. She's a bit of a wild child, but she's heard stories about what her parents see out there every day, and she just wants to live her life to the fullest, because tomorrow isn't promised. Well, or at least that's how she rationalizes it to herself anyway. When it comes right down to it, though, she's got a good head on her shoulders, and she knows better than to get herself caught up in anything too serious. She's currently a student at a local college, but she has no desire to follow in her family's footsteps.

Alexandra Dexter is the daughter of Dex Dexter and Sable Colby. She currently owns the Colby Collection gallery that she inherited from her mother. She's also a socialite and sits on the board of various charities throughout Los Angeles. She enjoys all things art ( including painting ) and often attends auctions in New York to purchase more ( as well as shop ). She prides herself on being very articulate and refined. In her One Chicago verse, all of this takes place in Chicago, rather than Los Angeles.

Krystina Carrington is the daughter of Blake Carrington and Krystle Carrington. She's currently the CFO of her father's company, Denver Carrington. She also had a heart transplant when she was only four years old, so she's still managing that on a daily basis, although nine times out of ten, she appears perfectly normal from the outside. She's very down-to-earth and kindhearted, unless you're her niece, Lauren, and you're both after the same son of the governor of Colorado. In her One Chicago verse, all of this takes place in Chicago, rather than Denver, and her family's company is instead called Carrington Enterprises.

Kate Ross is the daughter of Doug Ross and Carol Hathaway. She's also a twin. She's currently a first year resident at either County General, MED, or Grey Sloan, but she's pretty much already married to pediatrics. She's definitely her father's daughter, and she'll do whatever it takes to get her patient the best care possible, even if it means breaking a few rules here and there along the way.

Star Trek: Discovery "That Hope Is You Pt. 2"- And So It Begins

How wonderfully fitting so that my personal blog needs can match the Star Trek episode I wanna talk about! Serendipitous, right? Anyway, here we are on a Thursday to begin a new weekly thing I want to do for my sanity: Star Trek Thursdays! I know that isn't the satisfying alliteration that people might want, but Thursdays have been my least favorite days of the week since I was like, 6. My theory is that Monday is dreary, but fine, Tuesday you start hitting your stride, Wednesdays are neat because they're like the sweet spot of getting your act together, Friday is the last day of the work/school week, and of course the weekend is... the weekend. But Thursday is this weird spot where my excitement for the week is running out of steam and it's like, a lame tease for Fridays. So I've always hated it. But as my career has been doing better, I made a quality of life decision where I will go to work slightly later (sorry if that's flexing my freelancer privilege) and extend my morning tea drink and watch the most recent Star Trek. And with the final episode of Star Trek: Discovery's third season, I will start by doing a little writing warm-up each Thursday! So, these new Thursday blogs won't quite be reviews or personal blogs or just reactions, but a sort of blend of the three depending on the week. We got the gist? Okay? Okay. Now I'll get to talking about the actual episode and WE BETTER because I really liked this one. Let's start with the bad just to get it out of the way. I am bummed and concerned about the implications of Saru leaving Discovery. At the very least, it didn't feel clear that he'd be coming back to the ship and that greatly upsets me. Doug Jones is arguably one of my favorite actors and Saru was the anchor that made me adore Discovery even at its weakest points. While I know people come and go (like we always knew Pike was temporary) the thing is that Saru felt so... integral to Discovery. I can understand wanting to finally make Michael "Captain Burnham" finally, and she definitely deserves it. I'm just v stressed about possibly losing my favorite lanky alien. What I liked about a lot of this season was a decrease in the Kelvin inspired action-bonanza. Yes, Trek always had some action going on, but I appreciate more episodes that focus on societies and ideals and curious science. While the rest of the season was better than others, this final episode was pretty hardcore action-y and it was... fine? I just don't prefer it. I think Osyraa might've been the best Discovery villain so far and her death felt just sort of... anti-climactic. Like, I think a charm of old Star Trek villains is how the captains would run into them and then some time would pass, they'd evolve or become scarier, and they'd find new ways to tackle them. I was kinda hopeful that could happen with Osyraa & the Emerald Chain. But alas, she's just... dead. I'm meh on the new uniforms. I've always been a big fan of the old ones, though. NOW TO THE GOOD! Disabled super-genius is *chef's kiss*. Give me that sweet, sweet representation. The b-plot of Tilly and the crew trying to blow up the nacelles felt really older Star Trek and I like it. Owo+Keyla always makes me happy, but also Owo+Keyla is not confirmed either so 0_0 The baby family unit of Adira, Stamets, and Culber makes me very happy. Also making Gray a real character over time also makes me happy. He's probably going to end up a hologram and I am very okay with that. I want to see more of them. I think after all the trials she went through this season, Burnham absolutely deserves this captain's post. I also am so happy that a captain gets a love interest. It's good comeuppance for all the BS struggle she's had to deal with. Not just this season, but the past 3. It feels like we got a weird 3 season prologue to how the proper captain got their chair and it's kinda weird but I also kinda like it? But maybe I'm at a point where I'm attached to the crew enough to be like "yep, this is good". So, as Captain Burnham's adventure begins, so does my Star Trek blogging. (As well as a couple other secret things I hope I can talk about more in the future). But for now, I'm settled. Next week (until  I am graced with a new season of something something Trek), let's start at the beginning of TOS and go from there. ....And yes, that means we're gonna get real gay.

Q+In this future, it is possible to obtain robot assassins out of vending machines at the cost of 3 Franks. After terminating their target, the robot self-destructs for easy clean-up. During his first mission, the Scud we follow sees his self-destruct warning in a mirror during an 18-page fight scene. Not wanting to die and programmed for self-preservation for the sake of winning fights, Scud wounds Jeff, shooting off her arms and legs, then places her on life support at a nearby hospital ensuring their mutual survival.[1]

The main plot of Scud: The Disposable Assassin follows Scud's career as a freelance mercenary and assassin, working to pay off Jeff's medical bills.

Issue #20Edit

With issue #20, the series went on indefinite hiatus with a cliffhanger. Schrab was growing dissatisfied with the direction the story was taking, and stepped back from the book rather than allowing things to worsen.[2] At the same time his career in Hollywood began to pick up, so he shifted focus further away from the book. Since then Scud's publisher, Fireman Press, was dissolved after a falling out between Rob Schrab and a business partner over rights.[3]

Four-issue series finaleEdit

On January 3, 2007, Schrab announced on his blog his plans to finish Scud in four parts, Issues 21–24, at which point he would release an omnibus of all 24 issues.[4] Podcasts posted to Schrab's site gave his state of mind during the process, opportunities he is passing up to finish the book, and a view of the process he uses to create a comic page.[5] Regarding the decision to conclude the series with 4 issues, Rob Schrab told fans that "he just couldn't make this another issue. I want Scud to go out with a bang."

The final installment of Scud was released as a four-part mini-series published by Image Comics, with covers by guest artists.

Rob Schrab has stated that he currently has no plans for further issues of Scud Spin-offs – Scud: Tales from the Vending Machine and The Drywall & Oswald Show.

In a closing interview conducted by Doug TenNapel at the end of Issue #24, Rob stated that he would like to see La Cosa Nostroid concluded, but that it would be up to Dan Harmon who helmed the series

Activity Check

Two weeks have gone by, and the current activity period has ended! This post will be listing all of the characters who have and haven’t met their post requirements, as well as provide them with their pay and expenses for the last two weeks, so be sure to read this to collect/pay your bank, and to make sure whether or not your character is in danger of being dropped!

To pass, your character must have at least FOUR RP POSTS. Music, Money Posts, and Artwork don’t count for activity unless they have an RP component to them. If your character hasn’t met the post requirement, then they will fail. If they fail the subsequent check, then that character will be dropped from the Masterlist. Failed characters do not get the money bonuses from the Activity Check. Instead, they will only be awarded 500G and whatever expenses that applies to them (rent, commuter’s pass). Hopefully you’ll be able to keep up with your activity next go-round!

If you are a new arrival to the group (as in, you’ve joined during this activity period), then you will automatically pass. Additionally, if you are a new arrival and have made FOUR RP POSTS, then you will get full benefits of the check. If not, your character’s name will have a star next to it, and they will only get 1,000G for passing. This only applies to new arrivals that have been here for a majority of the activity period. If your character has joined in the week of the activity check, they will also be allowed full benefits. This is applicable for people with hiatuses, as well--- if you get off of hiatus and/or report back in within the week of the activity check, you will also be allowed a pass.

Willett Pot Still: The Liquid #BourbonTok Loves to Hate

“What’s up Bourbon TikTok? … Today I want to tell you about my least favorite bottle in my collection,” says Chad Watson, a Lexington, Ky.-based bourbon enthusiast who goes by @mydailybourbon. Wearing a black tie with a zippered gray jacket, over the next 40 seconds Watson discusses how much he dislikes Willett Pot Still Reserve — “too malty, too earthy, too grassy” — which has become the bourbon that TikTokers most love to hate.

Spend any amount of time on so-called Bourbon TikTok and you can’t help but run across hundreds of reviews for Willett Pot Still Reserve. Some are professional, most are amateur, a few are earnest, many more are comical, bordering on cruel. And they’re nearly all negative, as though slamming this particular whiskey is a rite of passage in becoming a bourbon reviewer on the exceedingly popular platform.

So how did Willett Pot Still Reserve become the most dunked-on bourbon in all of TikTok?

“TikTokers are doing a service that others in the blogging, YouTube, Instagram, and even the podcast space can’t,” believes Kenny Coleman, host of the Bourbon Pursuit podcast. He says that once something like these Willett Pot Still slams take off via TikTok’s algorithm, more are certain to follow. “So now bourbon reviewers on TikTok are getting a message out to people who didn’t necessarily know there even are bourbon reviews,” he says.

Zero Point Zero

For connoisseurs, Willett holds a hallowed position in the American whiskey pantheon. The company humbly began in 1984 when Even Kulsveen purchased it from his father-in-law, Thompson Willett, and renamed it Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. But Kulsveen wasn’t actually distilling anything, instead sourcing unwanted stock from nearby distilleries like Bernheim, Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, and the vaunted Stitzel-Weller.

As the modern American whiskey boom began to take shape in the early aughts, Kulsveen’s son Drew began releasing their most primo stock as cask-strength, non-chill-filtered single barrels under the umbrella Willett Family Estate. Some of these, with names like Red Hook Rye, Doug’s Green Ink, and Rathskeller Rye, became some of the most acclaimed releases in American whiskey history. Pretty much all Willett Family Estate bottlings released since 2006 now sell for hundreds if not thousands of dollars — and, if you lack knowledge and connections, you really have no chance to ever score any.

“Purple tops, green tops, that’s fun stuff, but when it comes to [Pot Still] … it’s just not for me,” says Watson.

Unfortunately, almost all Willett looks identical — Cognac-style bottles topped with, as Watson mentions, purple foil tops, green foil tops, or white wax. All are slapped with stark white labels featuring the Willett family crest, with the only identifying differences being tiny, handwritten details indicating each bottle’s age, proof, and sometimes an esoteric barrel number. (For a while, the whiskey internet circulated a Google spreadsheet to keep track of these barrel numbers.) All this is what makes the Willett portfolio, if you will, completely inscrutable to newcomers.

“Willett is a very notable brand and people love to chase their limited releases,” says Watson. “So Willett does what most brands would do in that case: creates a product that draws people with their eyes, is priced decently, and is pretty much always available.”

That product, of course, being Willett Pot Still Reserve, the only Willett whiskey ever released into the mainstream. And that’s where I suspect the cognitive dissonance sets in.

Newcomers to the bourbon hobby see the reverent tones Willett is spoken with online, then assume that all Willett is the great Willett that whiskey geeks have been stockpiling for years. The fact that Willett Pot Still Reserve comes in an eye-catching glass decanter — meant to look like a literal copper pot still — solidifies the fact they’ve stumbled upon a good score, which makes the ensuing disappointment once they finally taste it all the worse.

“What’s up guys and gals, this is Kent Davis, wanting to give you an honest bourbon review,” says @kentedavis33, speaking over a still image of the Pot Still bottle. His following nine-second TikTok is a succinct slam:

Nicest Looking Bottle in My Collection

That “nice” bottle is exactly what leads to so much animus, claims Watson.

“Once people try the juice inside, they realize they have been duped,” says Watson. “For what seems like an amazing art piece, the liquid inside just doesn’t match the standard. It tastes young, earthy, and very green.”

Almost all Pot Still appearances on TikTok begin with the reviewer mentioning how much they like the bottle. In his review, Watson notes that the “bottle shape … is really cool.” “Pretty neat bottle…” says @glennflashwells. “Nicest looking bottle in my collection hands down,” says @mattybourbon. In many cases that will be the last wholly positive thing uttered by the reviewer.

Florida-based Andy Mauldin (@ronbourbondy) chose Willett Pot Still for his first-ever TikTok review earlier this year, claiming he’s never tried it before. Though even that doesn’t stop him from comically coughing after his first sip.

“Whahoooooaa, that is hot!” he exclaims as he struggles to clear his throat. He eventually calls Willett Pot Still Reserve “trash,” noting that the bottle is its “only redeeming quality.” Josh Grundemann (@bassinandbourbon) also coughs, nearly choking after sipping his first-ever Pot Still pour.

“That might be the worst bourbon I’ve ever tasted,” states the Louisiana man.

In a way, you could say a TikToker’s first sip of Willett Pot Still is the baptism by firewater that catapults them to the next level of connoisseurship. Maybe they’ll now be ready to get more serious with their bourbon reviewing. Or, maybe they’ll just want to milk the “Pot Still sucks” joke even further — by now it’s started to become a sort of TikTok meme.

Maudlin, for his part, did a follow-up TikTok where he dumps his remaining Pot Still into a fancy crystal decanter, jokingly hoping his wife will now assume it’s the “good stuff,” and thus drink it after running out of her preferred rosé.

If many Pot Still bashers go for the laughs regarding how awful it is compared to the luxe accommodations of the bottle it is housed in, there are a scant few TikTokers who are more earnest in their reviews. Steve Higdon (@60secondbourbonreview) finds Pot Still “pretty mellow” and “easy to drink.” Casey Warr thinks it’s “okay stuff.” While @mattybourbon calls it “not a great bourbon,” though admits it has a nice nose with notes of buttered popcorn, scoring it a decent 5 out of 10.

Those reviews might not elicit laughs or a viral view count, but they’re more accurate in their assessments. Pot Still Reserve is certainly not good — and I would never keep a bottle of it in my house — but it’s not as bad as TikTok would have you believe. Distiller rates it an 88 (out of 100), while Drink Hacker scores it a B+. That feels about right to me. Rumors abound that the spirit has gotten worse over the years, changing from a rye-flavored single-barrel bourbon to a wheated “small batch” blend of undisclosed origins. Whatever the case, it is almost certainly not 100 percent distilled via pot still, which makes the name and bottle design even more amusing.

That’s why the online anger continues to flow, with neophytes thinking they scored the world-famous Willett, seeing the fancy bottle suitable for displaying on the back bar, resting their iPhones facing them in selfie mode, firing up TikTok, taking a big sip, and then realizing (on video) that they just threw 50 bucks down the drain.

And, comical though these may be, maybe Willett should start paying more attention to them.

“Whiskey appeals differently to everyone. So there will be camps that like or dislike a certain whiskey,” says Coleman. “But when a majority of people are consistently giving the same message, the brand should take note and adjust.”

Or maybe not, as there continues to be a seemingly endless stream of fresh-faced TikTokers very excited about their recent Pot Still scores. Like @whiskeymorning, who enters his house clutching two bottles of Pot Still by their necks as he dances to Saweetie’s “My Time.”

We’ll wait for his TikTok review once he finally cracks it. My guess is that it will almost certainly involve coughing.
