First things first. Spoiler Alert for Dragon Quest XI. I just finished this game (though I know I’ve got a ton of post game stuff or so it seems) so the brain rot is real right now.

I need to talk about the penultimate fight against Jasper Unbound. Specifically the fact that I had Hendrik on my team for the entire fight and I don’t think ANY other team member was targeted as much as Hendrik was in that fight and I LOVED IT. Jasper’s resentment and HATRED towards Hendrik was actually a factor in the gameplay and I think that’s such a brilliant detail. I’m sure other games have done this but as far as I remember I don’t think I’ve ever noticed anything like that. I know it’s such a small detail but I really enjoyed it.

It also helped that Hendrik was the one to land the final blow that defeated Jasper and it just so dramatic and really brought me into the moment. I’m sure Hendrik getting the final blow was pure coincidence but I’ve been really wondering whether Jasper targeting Hendrik if you have him in your party was purposely programmed in. I feel like it has to be but I’m honestly scared to Google it cos if it’s deconfirmed I’d be real sad cos the drama and angst that brought to the fight was just fantastic.

Anyway Dragon Quest XI real good. Real good game. I’m completely in love with the characters in this game, they’re all so good. Also sorry if I’ve explained this poorly, I’m not very good at properly explaining and analysing things but I just really appreciated that detail, Intentional or not.

Spoilers for Dragon Quest XI, Act II

Hendriks's reaction to Veronica's death is something that I find to be really interesting. Sure, sure, I could talk about the Erik-Mia parallel but let's focus on Hendrik for a moment.

He spends all of the game up until Act II tracking down the main four (MC, Erik, Serena, Veronica.) And has his men frequently report back to him. What I find to be interesting is how Hendriks's men depicted Serena and Veronica has "demons in human form" and allowed Hendrik in blinded loyalty to view these two young women to be monsters, not y'know, healers and mages.

AND VERONICA, AS FAR AS THESE GUARDS KNOW, IS A CHILD. AS FAR AS HENDRIK EVER KNOWS, VERONICA IS A CH I L D.

If I had to guess, Serena/Veronica would be about 18-19 years old, Veronica with her curse, looks like she's pre-teens (10-13.) As far as I know, Hendrik has never actually been clarified that the sisters were actually twins, and he could p o t e n t i a l l y believe that Veronica is instead a little sister. When he first meets Veronica, it's with the Jasper/Mordegon reveal and Veronica's sacrifice.

Hendrik openly blames himself for her death, as far as Hendrik is concerned: HE'S murdered this child because HE was too blinded by love loyalty to Jasper and the Kingdom. When it's revealed that Veronica is dead, the party grieve in their own ways but all openly accept it. Hendrik however blames himself the most, he believes he's torn this family apart because he was too blind to see he was being manipulated, and as a result, a CHILD had to sacrifice herself to make up for his crucial mistake. I just know this man couldn't bring himself to speak to anybody at her memorial service, and later privately paid tribute. He can't look at Serena without feeling guilty, he can't find it in himself to be around children.

Idk, I think that fact that he was "I could have stopped this, this is all my fault!!!" is interesting and shows how he probably mourned Jade, Jasper ("I could have saved them, I could have prevented this.") and Sylvando ("I could have stopped him running away.")

It's also interesting that Serena isn't the one who blames herself, but I think that adds to her character as well.

Okay so there’s times where I develop fictional crushes on videogame characters and I can understand WHY I develop one…and then there’s those where sometimes it just randomly happens, and I can’t even place the time or reason of how it started.

Enter in Hendrik.

This is the same guy where I headcanon his man to literally have the WORST social anxiety when he’s around the other guards of Heliodor. The same one where he probably has a fixation for horses and thus he’s found CONSTANTLY riding on a fricking horse instead of just walking anywhere (even talking about his steed whenever he possibly can), and even the same guy who would ABSOLUTELY use all of his will power just to keep himself from cursing after he stubs his toe.

Needless to say…this is a character where I have no idea why I have a crush on him, but here he is; this possibly awkward knight is living rent free in my mind (thanks Hendrik—)

With that being said, I will most likely make headcanons of this guy (and more, siiiince this is another addition to the list of “fandoms I’ve gotten back into/fallen into for a day and brain rot over because of how funny/nuts it is” XD)
