A friendly northern town where nights are white, days are dark, sea is cold like the hearts of the ancient gods, and arctic lights in their beauty can compete with a mysterious shining, which we are all scared to even glance at.

First of all, an important message from the municipal government.

Nulogorsk government reminds that the military community located after the nothern highway exit from A-800 is former, closed and left under the decree of the municipal government from February, 29th, 1993. Noone lives at the territory of the military community. Noone works there. There is no living or nonliving soul. The military community is abandoned, closed and sealed for eternity - they say in the decree. The municipal government reminds you: if you see servicemen without military rank insignia, they are just a phantom of your imagination. If not only you see them, it is a phantom of your collective imagination. Do not try to talk to these servicemen. Ignore these phantoms of your imagination.

It's a significant day here today in Nulogorsk - after many years of repairs, the Palace of Culture is finally re-opened. Surely, all the important citizens will come for the opening, also a short briefing will be held, as well as a concert on the occasion of opening. Concert-bill is still elaborating.I remind you that the Palace of Culture was closed for a few years due to major repairs. The reasons were leaking roof, wall cracks and stucco moldings falling down off the walls. All the rumours about some kind of a way to some kind of an abyss opened in the vaults of the Palace, that artists and workers who stayed late after the concerts heard horrifying, ghoulish howl, which was coming like from every wall and every dark corned, that on the long, dark November days all the building winced and shaked as if because of the panoptic terror - that's all of course just idle rumours, and shame on them who pass it.

Now all the repair works are finally finished, the newest sound and video equipment is already brought, and Nulogorsk cultural life is ready to play out in fresh colours!

So, now everyone's waiting for the complimentary speech from our Mayor Pavel Borovik, who will officialy cut the symbolic ribbon after this. Our Mayor's speeches are always unforgettable! We can just recall his congratulations on last New Year, when he traditionally but in his unique manner wished success, health and luck to all of us, using frozen bull-trout, his expensive shoes in the colour of sycamore and his whole vocal range of 3-5 octaves. For sure today we will all be impressed by his words.Sadly I can't be there now at this wonderful event, but who would then tell you of everything happening in the town, dear listeners?

There were no details, despite legitimate questions from the journalists, for whom a short and quick news conference was held. But still there are many questions. What happened to safety in our little, cosy, quiet town? Why now? Why Major's hairstyle is so perfect, and her eyes are looking so strikingly right into your soul?

We didn't get answers to those questions.

Last news, on-the-spot message from Olga! Our Mayor Pavel Borovik has just finished his inspiring speech. He recalled how many events took place in our Palace of Culture, how we celebrated Town Day here, New Year, Knowledge Day, Gnosis Day, Harvest Day... Oh, I remember those wonderful New Year nights! The fun that united everyone, young and old... on such nights, teenagers for the first time tried 16-kopek plombiere ice-cream and "Kaliningrad" champagne! How strongly I wanted then to come back into my childhood and feel what they were feeling: the delight of novelty, the expectancy of unpredictable future and existentialist horror of it's imminence!

By the way about imminence.

"Blacker than darkness" coffee and bake shop invites the people and visitors of the town to try something new, double cake with orange jam and candied peel! Wonderful for to go and to get out, ideal with coffee. If you order the cake and any coffee except espresso, you get vague anxiety until next morning for free! For strict vegans: coffee on soy milk, carrot cake and a feeling of grievous loss. Offer doesn't include orders to go.

Let's get back to the main topic of the day. Just now, our esteemed Mayor Pavel Borovik has officialy cut the lily-white ribbon into thousand of smallest pieces which flew away with the wind just like our young hopes and dreams. Local amateur orchestra played a solemn melody, and doors of the Palace of Culture were opened for the first visitors chaired by Palace manager, Mayor and a representative of the press service of the municipal government. As Olga says, everyone just passed the red carpet covering the entrance stairs and came into the spacious lobby decorated with flowers and flecks from the gorgeous crystal chandelier. The orchestra refused to come in, saying it can make them go out of tune, but as Olga says, their eyes were suspiciously shifty. I wonder, what's this all about? Sadly, I don't have music education, so I even can't suggest!

In the same way, I can't suggest why our humble radio station is interesting for the servicemen with military rank insignia, but I can assure that I was really glad to see Major Andreeva with her perfect hairstyle, expressive eyes and even more expressive body language within our walls. I asked if I could help somehow or buy her a cup of coffee with orange double cake this evening, but seems like Major didn't pay due attention to my words. I think their packed and tight schedule doesn't let them such freedom as coffee. Though, orange double pie...

Anyway, Major Andreeva and her crew were interested in our humble sound equipment and my desk, and also in our regular technician Alexander, which, at the sight of visitors, made a loud hiss, blended into surroundings and quickly left the studio by draining into the sewer system.

It was a tiny cupboard of a room about six paces in length. He was in the condition that overtakes some monomaniacs entirely concentrated upon one thing.

Olga who's on scene tells me that the first visitors of renewed Palace of Culture just walked into the main music hall. She says that the very first step into the large wooden doors made her heart tremble with inexplicable fear of the abyss of the existence. Mayor Pavel Borovik is determined as always.Seems like not everything is ready for the festive program in the music hall. The orchestra pit is empty and has the form of the sinkhole into the primeval abyss. Splendid velvet curtain isn't as determined as the Mayor and in every way blocks artists' attempts to sneak onto the stage and thereby save themselves from something which makes ghoulish... one moment, looks like Olga gives some details... Being Jewish/Being Labour

My very first political experience came in Year 4 when I had to argue against Liverpool Football Club building a new stadium in Stanley Park, the iconic separator of Anfield and Goodison. Earning myself a lot of praise for my naturally argumentative streak and on a high from my first real debate, 9-year-old me wanted to be a politician for the best part of 3 hours. I recall my dad telling my neighbour of my new-found career path and said neighbour telling me to “always fight for the poor.” At the time I probably, definitely shrugged that remark off, now I see how that comment is representative of the city I grew up in.

Welcome to Liverpool, a city built and repaired by the EU when Thatcher’s reign wanted to drive our city into the ground. A city that has fought and continues to fight tirelessly not only for the justice of the Hillsborough victims but to erase everybody’s misconceptions about a city of workers, artists, volunteers and activists that welcome the world with open arms. It is almost a moral obligation to vote Labour in this city, in more recent times “Did you vote Labour or Tory?” is becoming as common as “Are you a Red or a Blue?” You owe it to your city, to your family, to your friends and to your community to vote Labour in Liverpool, no matter who is in charge.

My second political experience came aged 10, completely unbeknownst to me. My grandad randomly goes silent and teary and takes our dog on her second walk of the hour. She definitely didn’t need to go out again, she wasn’t expressing any want to… Now I see my grandad just didn’t want us to see him break down. As I’ve gotten older, the more my family have opened up and the more honest the world has become around me, I learned that my grandad suffers from severe panic attacks. This is believed to be from the trauma of losing loved ones to the Holocaust and a series of antisemitic attacks that he has been the victim of a handful of times in his life. These revelations have made me angry, not only have my family lost loved ones and not only do we have to grieve family that could’ve been, we have to watch something that supposedly ended 75 years ago still snatch the livelihood from our nearest and dearest even now.

I’m in my last year of school, and everyone around me seems… weirdly excited about politics. It was almost like One Direction split up and British Parliament was the next best thing. I don’t know if there was something in the water or if Jeremy Corbyn’s rebranding of a rebranded Labour lit a fire up everyone’s arse, but knowing very little about him, I really liked him. He wants everyone in the country to have a garden? Oh, what a world. A wholesome, transparent and faultless politician? That is everything everyone ever told me an MP wouldn’t be, and there is nothing more exciting than being 17 and proving a boomer wrong. A year goes by and I’m still wooed by this man, sure he has a few haters by this point but who doesn’t… It’s not like Tories don’t have a reputation for saying and doing anything to protect themselves and as a Scouser, I knew that fact all too well.

Throughout the rise and fall of Corbynism, I turned 18, I started making my own money, I reconnected massively with my Jewish heritage and I was forming all kinds of relationships, I just wasn’t as invested in it anymore. I blindly voted based on a honeymoon-like misconception I had of a politician when I was a teenager. Coming up to the General Election 2019, I started to make some discoveries about Corbyn and the never dying anti-semitism accusations that came with his name. At first I thought these claims came from opportunistic Tories that would later turn their back on Jews when they got the outcome they wanted, and don’t get me wrong, a lot of it was just that, a lot of these accusations came from people that don’t care about Jewish people at all. I simply found it hard to believe that somebody who had it so right about every other aspect of my identity, could be so wrong about my ethnicity and religion.

Time proved me wrong. I quickly realised not all of these accusations came from fake allies riding on the back of Jewish activism to push their personal agenda. In fact, most of them never and I was confused. I confided in Labour Party members on multiple platforms about my confusion and upset and I simply just wanted people to be able to justify why the face of Labour called anti-Jewish terrorist organisations his “friends.” I wanted people to tell me why this man thought English humour was lost on British Jews. I wanted everyone who told me to support this man and his cause to explain why he was defending antisemitic caricatures and why he uses the word Zionist so loosely and why he can’t help but defend countless Holocaust deniers. I, myself, was met with the same abuse and anti-semitism that my grandad described. As well as what seemed like a reluctance of people coming to my defence, which left me more perplexed because this was unusual for Labour and its members when racism surfaces.

Despite what I was put through, how unwelcome and unheard I felt in a party bouncing with activism calling out social injustice, I felt like I would be a traitor not to have marked an X in the Labour box on my ballot. Part of me was saying you’re voting for a party, not a person. I thought about Steven Smith from Kensington being sanctioned, I thought about nurses and doctors and patients on corridors, I thought about the soaring numbers of food banks and rough sleepers. I thought about myself and the career I want to pursue in medicine and how I’m even going to get there when I know I’d struggle to make ends meet at university. The other part of me was reminded that I was now blacklisted from most Labour forums for being a Jewish Labour member with concerns, that Luciana Berger was forced out of her position as Wavetree’s MP as a Jewish woman because the anti-semitism that she received was so unbearable and of course, Labour’s leader wasn’t shy of antisemitic behaviour himself. This made me feel like a traitor putting X in the Labour box too. I couldn’t win. I did so on the grounds that I wanted a Labour government, I always had and I justified this on the basis that I would continue to to fight anti-semitism within the party, no matter how silenced I was. I wanted Jewish people to be able to access Labour and campaign with Labour without feeling either unwelcome or tokenised.

It was tough. It still is. It’s going to take a while to drain the party of antisemitism and it’s going to take even longer for Jewish people to be at the forefront again, but Labour isn’t inherently anti-semitic, it doesn’t have to be, there is a future for Jewish voices in Labour, but there is also a future where I will no longer advocate for a party that doesn’t advocate for me.

Babies

This was partly inspired by the short film from Children in Need featuring Stephen and Laura holding babies but then I was re-reading Dr Turner’s Casebook and this story took a different less fluffy direction.

Apologies for the quality of the picture but a close-up from a thumbnail video was never going to be great.

Babies

Patrick Turner had little experience with babies until his medical training. He thoroughly enjoyed his obstetrics rotation and considered it as a future specialisation. After qualifying he had secured a job in an admissions ward. It was an eye opener and a challenging start to his medical career. The community the hospital served was overcrowded and most people struggled to make ends meet. The patients he saw often had diseases that spread quickly in such conditions. Others had illnesses that were rarer in the more affluent areas of the city. The tireless work of the medical staff and the people they served gave him a heart for communities like this one that would last him the rest of his life. He would have been quite content to stay in his home city but war intervened.

For a man as dedicated as Patrick it was inevitable that he would sign up. This time his patients were not those struggling with day to day life but young men torn down in battle. Men younger than himself, some of whom could barely grow stubble let alone a beard. It was the seemingly endless parade of maimed youth that finally pushed him over the edge. He was used to suffering and death but this was relentless. He remembered another war and another generation of young men lost to the battlefields of Europe. He struggled on for months hiding his mental turmoil until it became too much. He had trained as a doctor to heal but war made a mockery of that. Here were healthy men who were in an instant transformed into a nightmarish scenario of blood and pain where time was of the essence but there was never enough of it.

Northfield was a place where there was silence and green fields. It was a world away from Italy and war. Slowly he began to heal but a part of him couldn’t face what he had witnessed in Italy so he buried it deep in his mind where he hoped it would never resurface. As part of his treatment Patrick visited a child guidance clinic. He was able to be an extra pair of hands thanks to his medical knowledge. It made him feel useful again but the echoes of war were still very present for him.

One day one of the nurses asked him if he could wash one of the infants. He looked at her in disbelief but understood that it was a job that needed doing and he was currently unoccupied. His hands shook as he picked up the baby. He breathed deeply to try and calm his nerves so as not to frighten the child. As he bathed the child his hands steadied and he felt a calmness that he hadn’t felt in a very long time. As the baby gurgled and splashed the water, Patrick felt something in his spirit lighten. He was relieved to hand the child back to the nurse as he was drained by the effort of trying to stay calm and keep his hands from shaking.

Over the remaining few months at Northfield he bathed many babies and each time he felt that same sensation in his spirit. He reasoned with himself that it was the same calmness that soothed animals. Fear made animals nervous and he imagined it was the same with babies.

As his time at Northfield drew to a close it was time to look to the future. Patrick once again considered specialising in obstetrics but felt he would be better suited in the community rather than in a hospital. The next question was where to go. A move back to his home city he considered a step back into the past so he ruled that idea out. One of his fellow patients had been a doctor at the London Hospital before the war and Patrick decided it was worth considering.

In December 1945 Patrick Turner was discharged from Northfield and boarded a train heading south. London beckoned and with it a new challenge but as he discovered the East End of London was very like the area of Liverpool where he had worked before the war. It was both a fresh start and a homecoming. After a few months at the London he moved into the community of Poplar and began his work as a GP. It was an ideal situation for him. A community he understood even though the accent took some getting used to. A place he could heal and make a difference. The strangest aspect of his new life was the nurses and midwives he worked alongside. For a man whose faith had been lost amidst the bloodshed of an Italian battlefield it was a surprise to find himself working closely with nuns. He very quickly realised the Nonnatus nuns dedication and care for the patients was equal to his own.

One of his new challenges was a baby boom in Poplar. The war was over and as families were reunited new babies were an inevitability. As Patrick had only done a rotation on obstetrics while training to be a doctor delivering babies was a new experience for him. Thankfully the Sisters were more than happy to help him.

Sister Monica Joan was a goldmine of information and he didn’t know if he’d have survived that first year in Poplar without her. Her knowledge and expertise were phenomenal and he learnt so much from her. Sister Evangelina grumbled that they had been sent a GP who didn’t know one end of a baby to the other but Patrick understood her desire to do the best for her patients. From her he learnt more about the people under his care for she too was one of them. Although not from the East End she had come from similar circumstances and their struggles were well known to her. In a short time he was as familiar with childbirth as he was with the teeming streets of Poplar.

During that first year in Poplar Patrick met Marianne Parker. After a whirlwind courtship they were married. Shortly after their wedding Marianne announced she was expecting a baby and Patrick was delighted. The shadows of war were never very far away and each time he lost a baby or a mother they intensified. It was the babies he saw being born that kept the shadows at bay. Each new life was a hope of things to come. A future generation that he hoped would be unscathed by war. Holding a baby was like holding a miracle. Especially one born in the overcrowded tenements of Poplar.

Timothy’s arrival was the biggest miracle of Patrick’s life. He’d never expected to be a father and his son was a joy to him. He hoped that Timothy would be followed by a sibling as he’d dearly love a daughter as well. Marianne decided against another baby as Timothy’s birth had been difficult. Patrick respected her wishes but hoped one day she might change her mind.

The National Health Service brought seismic changes to medicine and Patrick’s workload trebled overnight. Now he could treat patients before they became desperately ill. He could try and prevent diseases with education and embraced the new vaccination programmes wholeheartedly. It was exhilarating but exhausting work. He often came home late after Timothy’s bedtime and occasionally after Marianne was asleep. On those very late nights he would always look in on his baby son. If Timothy stirred Patrick would pick him up and cuddle him. As he rocked his child all the cares of the day washed from him. He felt restored from the distressing sights he had witnessed by the newness of life.

As Timothy grew older, Marianne’s health declined. Her passing left a gaping chasm in both his and Timothy’s lives. He doubted if that void would ever be filled. Work kept the shadows at bay but every extra hour at work was an hour when Timothy needed him. It was a juggling act and one that threatened to topple on a regular basis.

Life change beyond recognition on a misty road when Sister Bernadette became Shelagh to him. Love and marriage brought the possibility of a baby into the forefront. Shelagh expressed her wish to extend their family straightaway and Patrick was thrilled. The last few years with Marianne’s illness, her passing and her absence had taken a toll on him. The shadows still lurked beneath the surface and babies seemed to be the only thing that cast light into the darkest recesses of his mind.

Shelagh’s infertility diagnosis hit him harder than he admitted to her. He tried his best to support her but it was difficult. Her suggestion of adoption seemed perfect until he read the paperwork. He felt in his heart that some things were better left buried and dredging up the past would only cause harm. He was right but the harm was to him. He shut himself off from everything but work. His family were hurting but he was oblivious.

The letter brought with it an unexpected acceptance and he knew that a new life would bring restoration. First he needed to repair the damage caused by his brooding silence. The words were like barbs on his tongue as he started to tell Shelagh about the events that had preceded Northfield. The pain was excruciating but with her gentle support he persisted. He was pale and drained by the time he had finished his story. She stroked his hair and held him. She didn’t condemn, she didn’t judge but she listened and she loved. Lastly he told about bathing the babies while he was at Northfield and the peace it brought to his scarred and weary spirit.

When Angela came into their lives, Patrick took a step back to let Shelagh immerse herself in the joys of a new mother. Shelagh had other ideas though and for Angela’s first bath, it was his turn to take hold of their precious little girl. Shelagh had watched him with a smile on her face and knowing look in her eye.

Giving his baby daughter her first bath was a beautiful moment for Patrick. This child like Timothy represented hope for the future not just any future but his future and his family’s future.

The future however had a darkness lurking within it and Patrick was grateful that he didn’t know that on the night he cared for little Susan Mullucks. Susan was born with missing limbs and her prognosis was uncertain. He had sat by her cot for hours waiting for her to slip away but she didn’t. Hunger roused her and he had to respond. It felt good to hold a newborn again. That memory came back to haunt Patrick the day Sister Evangelina died and the truth about thalidomide was revealed. He felt sick in the pit of his stomach that he had caused such suffering to a child. He had spent his life in medicine wanting to heal people and not harm them. This drug was an anathema to him. He worked tirelessly to locate all his patients who had been prescribed the drug and tried to make amends to the patients whose children had been damaged by it. Patrick did his best but he couldn’t do the one thing he wanted to do. He couldn’t turn back the clock and never prescribe thalidomide.

The trip to Hope Clinic did much to restore his faith in medicine but it was their unexpected souvenir that did the most to bring hope back into Patrick’s future. Although that hope seemed tenuous for a while when Shelagh was in hospital, it was restored once she and the baby were safely out of danger.

Patrick’s burning desire was to be with Shelagh when their child was born. He listened to her reasons and although he understood them he didn’t agree with them. The day Shelagh went into labour felt like one of the longest of his life. Waiting during the day was fine with work to keep him occupied but later on it seemed interminable. Sitting in his car and then pacing the corridor outside the bedroom. It took all his strength not to enter the room especially when he could hear how tired Shelagh was.

Shelagh’s singing was the most beautiful music but her invitation to join her was special beyond imagining. He could never come close to describing the magical feeling of supporting the woman he loved with every part of his being and being with her as she brought their son into the world. He was used to complicated deliveries but this was calm and peaceful.

It was Shelagh who insisted that Patrick should clean their baby. Sister Julienne washed Shelagh’s body and Patrick bathed their son. Although Patrick’s faith was small, there was something spiritual about this moment of cleansing. Patrick looked up and caught Shelagh’s eye and knew that she too had felt something in that moment, although she would give it greater meaning than he had faith for.

Patrick knew that he had left the shadows of war far behind but the simple act of washing or holding a baby would always be a balm to his soul.
