This year, three quarters of the total are SMEs, 30 of which have fewer than 10 employees. NVIDIA introduces DRIVE AP2X; complete Level 2+ autonomous vehicle platform
At its GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA announced NVIDIA DRIVE AP2X—a complete Level 2+ automated driving solution encompassing DRIVE AutoPilot software, DRIVE AGX and DRIVE validation tools. DRIVE AP2X incorporates DRIVE AV autonomous driving software and DRIVE IX intelligent cockpit experience. Each runs on the high-performance, energy-efficient NVIDIA Xavier system-on-a-chip (SoC) utilizing DriveWorks acceleration libraries and DRIVE OS, a real-time operating system. NVIDIA DRIVE AP2X encompasses a full-stack autonomous driving software solution. DRIVE AP2X Software 9.0, which will be released next quarter, adds a wide range of new autonomous driving capabilities. It includes more deep neural networks, facial recognition capabilities and additional sensor integration options. To enhance mapping and localization, DRIVE AP2X software will include MapNet, a DNN (deep neural network) that identifies lanes and landmarks. For robust and comfortable lane-keeping, a suite of three distinct path planning DNNs will provide greater accuracy and safety. ClearSightNet allows the vehicle to detect camera blindness, as when the sun shines directly into the sensor, or when mud or snow limits its vision. This allows the car to take action to make up for any sensor obstructions. For driver monitoring, a new DNN enables facial recognition. Ecosystem partners and manufacturers can enable face identification to open or start the car as well as make seating and other cabin adjustments. DRIVE AP2X software will also feature new visualization capabilities. To build trust in the autonomous driving capabilities, a confidence view provides vehicle occupants a visualization of the car’s surround camera perception, current speed, speed limit and driver monitoring, all on one screen. Planning and control. NVIDIA also detailed the DRIVE Planning and Control software layer as part of its DRIVE AV software suite. This layer consists of a route planner, a lane planner and a behavior planner that work together to enable a safe and comfortable driving experience. A primary component of the DRIVE Planning and Control software is NVIDIA Safety Force Field (SFF). This robust driving policy analyzes and predicts the dynamics of the surrounding environment. It takes in sensor data and determines a set of actions to protect the vehicle and other road users. NVIDIA SFF protects vehicles from the unpredictability of real-world traffic. DRIVE Software 8.0 Enables Surround Perception, AR for Safe Automated Driving
DRIVE Software 8.0 — which integrates enhanced perception, visualization and mapping capabilities into one release — makes it easy to see the road ahead for safe self-driving.
The newest version of the extensive DRIVE Software suite, announced this week at CES, features advanced automated driving and in-cabin user experience functionalities powered by AI. Much of the DRIVE Software 8.0 capabilities are also hallmarks of the recently introduced DRIVE AutoPilot system. The release will be available to developers in the next few weeks.
NVIDIA DRIVE Software is an open software suite that’s powered by the compute capabilities of the DRIVE AGX platform. It consists of the DRIVE OS operating system, DriveWorks software framework, a rich SDK to develop software applications for autonomous driving, as well as DRIVE AV and DRIVE IX software applications for autonomous driving.
What’s in DRIVE Software 8.0
With this release, developers now have access to high-definition visualization for both vehicle sensors and driver monitoring, as well as more advanced surround perception.
In-vehicle visualization offers a real-time look inside the brain of an autonomous vehicle for its occupants. It shows what the car sees, how it classifies objects and plans future moves, and how those decisions change second by second. And, using augmented reality, autonomous vehicle software developers can visualize and track this data in a developer-friendly format.
The release also includes updates to the software’s perception capabilities, enhancing object detection and providing a 360-degree view around the vehicle, making DRIVE Software 8.0 a highly advanced, open software platform for autonomous driving development.
Tracking the Road and the Driver
By translating sensor data to a visual display, DRIVE IX now allows manufacturers to track a vehicle’s inputs, perception and path-planning both in real time and for recorded data. Developers can view the data as the car drives with displays inside the vehicle. The visualization works in five phases: sense, perceive, map, plan and drive.
In the sense phase, the display shows the raw camera sensor data the car uses for object detection. From there, the perceive phase outlines the vehicle’s object detection process using bounding boxes, as well as labels for objects as far as 50 meters away. This phase also shows  the map phase, the display highlights lane lines perceived by the car, and the plan phase shows the vehicle’s upcoming path. Finally, the drive phase graphs the steering, acceleration and brake actions the vehicle is taking to follow the desired path. In real time, developers can toggle between these five views as the car drives.
A similar process takes place for driver monitoring. Using a driver-facing camera, deep neural networks can track whether a driver is drowsy or distracted. With the new visualization update, drivers and passengers can see this process in real time.
As in driving visualization, the driver monitoring display can show the raw camera data in the initial sense phase, adding face and eye identification in the detect phase. In the track phase, the visualization details the angle of the driver’s head as well as the direction of their gaze. And, an analysis of whether the driver is drowsy (shown by a coffee cup icon) or distracted (attention off the road is tracked by a timer in the corner) is displayed in the monitor phase. In both cases, the video is tinted red when the algorithms detect these dangerous situations.
Enhanced Perception and Mapping
In addition to cutting-edge visualizations, DRIVE Software 8.0 builds on past perception and other capabilities in DRIVE AV for an even greater autonomous driving development experience with new deep neural networks.
One such network, LightNet, identifies both solid and turn lights and can discern whether they are green, yellow or red. Its companion, SignNet, recognizes a range of traffic signs, including: speed limit, one-way, “Do Not Enter,” yield and stop signs.
In this release, DRIVE AV also features DRIVE MapStream, which allows developers to upload data from the vehicle’s sensors to their own digital maps. These maps are critical for self-driving cars to locate themselves on the road, as well as to anticipate obstacles like construction zones or a closed lane.
To help get safe, automotive-grade self-driving technology on the roads sooner, DRIVE Software 8.0 will available to developers by mid-January, bringing manufacturers one step closer to production-ready autonomous vehicles.

More than 200 businesses, including 151 small and medium enterprises and 6 double award winners, will be honoured at a Buckingham Palace reception
previous international trade business winners have seen a 73% boost to their international sales and worldwide recognition
Her Majesty The Queen has today (23 April 2019) named 201 businesses as among the best in the country in the prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise to celebrate Her Majesty’s 93rd birthday.
The winners include businesses leading the way in a huge range of industries – from construction, agriculture, motoring and software development. This year, three quarters of the total are SMEs, 30 of which have fewer than 10 employees. They will join more than 6,000 British businesses in receiving the prestigious honour and will have the privilege of displaying the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise emblem for 5 years.
The Awards, now in its 53rd year, are the most prestigious awards for UK businesses, with companies from across the UK recognised for their contribution in the 4 categories.

DRIVE AGX Makes Self-Driving Dreams a Reality
The result of more than 18,000 hardware engineer years and 10,000 software engineer years in development, the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX platform delivers a true autonomous driving solution for production-level vehicles.
With today’s announcement of the availability of the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion sensor suite, which enables manufacturers to validate their technology in the vehicle, the DRIVE platform makes it possible for companies to deploy self-driving cars at scale. At GTC Europe Wednesday, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang outlined the end-to-end hardware and software solution for safe self-driving, demonstrating its capability with an 80-kilometer highway loop driven in an autonomous test vehicle with no human intervention.
“This is not a demo, this is something you can get right now,” Huang said. “The entire computer is production ready and automotive grade.”
The journey to a production-level platform began more than a decade ago, with the vision that future autonomous machines would demand an entirely new type of processor that could handle diverse and redundant compute workloads. From this vision, the Xavier system-on-a-chip (SoC) was born.
The solution has scaled to an entire high-performance compute platform for full autonomous driving that can withstand the rigors of operating inside a vehicle, as well as solutions to test and validate various levels of self-driving technology.
DRIVE AGX by the Numbers
The DRIVE AGX platform is a true engineering feat offering the performance capabilities for production-level autonomous driving. Those tens of thousands of engineering years of effort have resulted in a DRIVE AGX Pegasus compute platform the size of a laptop that delivers the performance of more than 60 laptop computers. DRIVE AGX Pegasus development platform can scale up to 320 TOPS of peak performance.
High compute performance translates to safety when it comes to autonomous driving. This capability enables diverse and redundant processes, meaning the system can continue to operate in the event of malfunction or failure is detected. The industry agrees, with more companies running autonomous vehicle prototypes using DRIVE AGX than any other platform.
“We don’t rely on any one algorithm, sensor or computing block,” Huang said. “As a result our progress has been incredible.”
A key component to this functional diversity is software. DRIVE Software is an extensible, constantly improving suite of self-driving and user experience functionalities powered by AI, accelerated computer vision and image processing. At its core is DRIVE OS, which delivers a safe, secure, real-time hypervisor and other core capabilities for autonomous driving applications.
Layered upon that, sensor processing from radar, camera and lidar sensors enable the car to build a holistic world model, with DriveWorks applications, such as deep neural networks for autonomous vehicle perception and data recording.
In addition to self-driving capabilities, DRIVE Software enables in-vehicle functionalities, such as DRIVE IX for driver monitoring and user experience and DRIVE AR for visualization of the car’s perception of its environment.
Streamlined Evaluation
With hundreds of companies worldwide developing technologies for autonomous driving, solutions must be flexible and customizable. NVIDIA DRIVE AGX developer kits let manufacturers streamline the develop of autonomous vehicle systems.
The recently announced DRIVE AGX Xavier and DRIVE AGX Pegasus Developer Kits — which include the AI car computer and vehicle harness to connect the platform to the car, international power supply, camera sensor and other accessories — let companies test their self-driving applications.
For validation in the car, NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion Development includes a DRIVE AGX Pegasus development platform along with sensors for autonomous driving (seven cameras, eight radars and optional lidar), sensors for driver monitoring, sensors for localization and other accessories. DRIVE Hyperion allows developers to experience and evaluate NVIDIA’s DRIVE Software suite consisting of DRIVE AV, DRIVE IX and DRIVE AR.
Manufacturers and developers can take advantage of the DRIVE software APIs to integrate their own software and test it in a real vehicle. DRIVE Hyperion is a complete sensor and compute platform setup that can be retrofitted onto a test vehicle.
With these powerful tools for development and validation, manufacturers now have everything at their fingertips to deploy self-driving for safer, more efficient transportation for all.
