Hair Problems

So now that the updated benchmark has come out, it's time for me to contemplate Dusk's hair in earnest. I have never, ever changed his hair (outside of being silly for prog nights or whatever). Every screenshot of him I've taken during his MSQ, he's had his hair. It's his hair.

But! The new derplander hair looks good on him, I think, and Dawntrail is very New Adventure, New Me feeling.

I have visual aids, of course. It kills me he doesn't have his glasses, but these things happen.

Ok I was just going off in the tags of another post, but I think these are the best anime trans guys I know of so if you're looking for decent rep, I personally recommend

Boys Run The Riot - Watari Ryō

Ryō is a teenage trans boy who hates being forced to wear the girl's uniform at his school. Alongside a cis male friend, Ryō starts a fashion brand focused on the kind of clothing that gives him gender euphoria. The mangaka of this one is an open trans man himself.

Stars Align - Fujita Shō

Stars Align is a sports anime about a middle school tennis club. One of the main character's mothers divorces her abusive husband and starts dating one of her friends from college. That friend happens to be Shō, an explicitly transgender man. Shō is shown to be an excellent father-figure and a loving partner. He helps his girlfriend and her son to work through the problems in their lives.

Our Dreams At Dusk - Utsumi Natsuyoshi

TW// suicidal ideation, attempted suicide

This manga is about a gay teenager who's been outed and is considering suicide. The story involves him working through his issues alongside other LGBT+ characters at a drop-in centre. Utsumi is one of these characters and is explicitly a trans man. Utsumi is treated as a fairly normal guy who's main problem is that he's anxious about expressing his real feelings and opinions with other people. Despite this he still already has friends he hangs out with after work, and is generally thought of as friendly and outgoing by other characters.

Sometimes I wish Zhongli at least wore a distinctively wuxia/xianxia*-style (default) outfit instead of what is basically a suit from waist up, even with Genshin’s typical outfit stylizations (lots of of ribbons/flowing clothes, metallic details, and visible layers). In terms of genre, Liyue’s Archon Quest is… basically a xianxia plot huh

If he’s all about Liyue traditions… I mean it’d be nice if Zhongli wears something closer to Jin Guangshan’s outfit (from the web series The Untamed) but brown with silver/bronze/gold accents. Doesn’t necessarily need the long loose sleeves as it’s not uncommon for wuxia outfits to have tighter sleeves fit for combat.

If it’s his outfit in the 2023 Lantern Rite… I mean it seems like it’s supposed to be a qipao with a caplet on top, but it’s so stylized the golden lines make it feel strangely… futuristic? (I’ve no context for Lantern Rite so I don’t know if it’s got a lore reason or anything)

*wuxia = Chinese martial arts drama genre. Loyalty, betrayal, family, politics, combat, CHIVALRY (e.g. helping the weak, self-governing), etc. xianxia = Chinese spiritual cultivation drama genre. Similar but maybe more mortals vs supernatural spirits/gods, and less mortal vs mortal. Costume-wise there’s not a very striking difference between the two (in my experience)

Links, Zeldas and other major characters run a moderately successful opera house/musical theater. Some are onstage, others are in the orchestra pit or are working Behind The Scenes (special effects, costuming, etc)

Wars is the headlining diva singer

I love it

I can see Four and Flora as like, the special effects crew, they handle anything and everything that isn't the actors and they're fantastic at it.

Lullaby is their director/the owner of the opera house, and Time is her trusty right hand who also acts as the choreography director and main stunt writer. He doesn't preform, but he runs the actors through their hoops before they can even think of stepping out onto the stage.

I see Wind less as a performer and more like the gopher, and Legend is less an actor and more a jack-of-all-trades. Costume department had a flummox? Call Legend, he'll fix it. One of the props is missing? Legend will find something you can use until that one shows up again. Someone's sick? Get a wig and a dress, Legend will fill in tonight. Just, dude does everything, but never consistently, and never without complaining at least a little.

Warriors would totally be a diva 100%, but he also works hard for it and puts his all into every role. Blood, sweat, and tears, baby, literally. He loves his work and will do whatever it takes to keep his role and status (short of harming someone else of course)

I see Twilight as playing one of two roles, or potentially both. He's the top stunt guy, but he also does the heavy lifting backstage and helps craft the sets with Four. Both are decent actors to boot, so if they need a large cast, both will fill in roles that suit them (Four ends up playing the villain a lot for some reason) as long as someone else can cover their asses in other departments (Flora had lights/sounds covered, no worries)

Wild is that one actor who plays random roles whenever is needed, and he's a comedy genius. My current manager's husband and I were in theater club together and he was brilliant with turning boring moments into comedy gold, and Wild does this 100%. He's best when paired with Fable (they make a good team in SMASH I hear) and they're a brilliant duo, although Legend threatens Wild about his sister a LOT.

Dusk and Artemis are both Warriors' most common co-stars (besides Twilight, Lullaby likes playing up their contrast with each other on stage) and Dusk takes an almost mentorly role with the younger woman. They and Warriors make up the Diva Trio of the group and are the ones who's names pull in teh most money. The only downside is that while Artemis and Wars can both sing, Dusk cannot and it's kinda acting as a road-block in her career.

For this reason, I can see Malon as a music coach Time hired (and is totally not falling in love with, what are you talking about) who kinda just works beside Ravio (their in house prop maker)to get this group of dedicated idiots to take care of themselves. not that Time's sisters and brothers (Saria and the others) don't try, but they don't work there.

Honestly, i'm running out of ideas. But to finish off Sky would be Time's best student. I mean, his sword-fighting and stunts are through the roof (sometimes literally) and he enjoys most of his work. maybe because he has a sword-fighting instructor outside of work (Fi) but that's beside the point.

Hyrule is the new kid who signed on to help Legend and Ravio with props and costumes and stuff, but he's like, really talented and crap and all the teams are trying to poach him from Leg and Rav, despite how fiercely protective of him they are. He's not exactly comfortable with the idea of performing yet, but everyone is trying to have him at least try (were this a story, warriors would try and coach him, end up mysteriously and plot-relevantly sick/injured and Hyrule would have to heroically step up and fill his role because Legend can't for some reason)

Junelezen 2: Dawn

Dusk does not see the dawn unless Dusk has not slept all night. Luckily, he has a twin, who goes by the name of Dawn.

Before they became adventurers, they were both quite good at their chosen careers. Dawn was considered an expert botanist even before the Calamity, and Dusk was equally well regarded as a carpenter.

Sometimes, Dusk or Beatin one of the other carpenters would get it in their head they needed a very specific, very rare wood for a project, and Dusk was always, always, always sent to ask Dawn to find it for them. She looks put upon, but deep down she enjoyed the challenge.
