I could follow you to the beginning Just to relive the start Maybe then we'd remember to slow down At all of our favorite parts
Women in gorgeous dresses, men in perfectly tailored tuxedos, this year’s Okonjo Foundation gala is glamorous and fabulous, everything one could expect from an event hosted by Pez.
Henry finds himself in the midst of it all. The room is packed with all sorts of influential people in different industries. Henry is proud to have a place among them. As COO of Fox Mountchristen Windsor Inc, England’s premiere media conglomerate, his position on the foundation's board of directors is an additional point of pride. All the same, he typically feels like a fish out of water when he’s without someone he knows to offset the intensity of such a large gathering.
Henry isn’t exactly sure how he’s landed into a conversation with strangers, but they seem to know of him nonetheless. He makes cordial talk with an older couple and two hanger-ons. Henry feels terrible for already forgetting everyone’s name, especially as they seem keen on making him the focus of the group’s conversation.
“And where is your lovely husband tonight?” a woman asks. Suddenly the ring on Henry’s fourth finger feels more like a noose around his neck.
He clears his throat to buy himself a moment. It’s a question he knew was inevitable. One doesn’t marry one of the newest emerging faces in the tech world without constantly being seen as a packaged, inseparable pair.
“I’m afraid Daniel is in San Francisco right now.”
“Such a power couple,” the woman notes, nodding sagely. “Stopping in and conquering both coasts.”
This gets polite laughter from those gathered. To Henry, his laugh sounds false to his own ears, but it doesn’t look as if anyone else notices. The current state of things between him and Daniel couldn’t be more blatantly defined than the fact that they are once more separated. It’s been a running theme in their relationship long before they even uttered the words “I do”.
It always feels prominent but never more so than when Henry is at events like this and finds himself flying solo.
He thinks back to the conversation he had with Daniel at their home in London. Henry had told Daniel all about the Okonjo Foundation’s gala in New York, how excited he was to be with Pez for the event and a subsequent working stay as they had plans to expand the foundation. Daniel had agreed to come, a whole month and a half ago. Henry had been glad for it too. It would, in his eyes, be a nice show of support to Pez and the organization Henry was on the board of.
However, just two weeks ago, Daniel had gone back on his promise, citing that he was needed for a conference out in the Bay Area. Henry has been stewing on it for two weeks, unsure whether or not he should believe his own husband. They’ve been through this before, sudden changes to Daniel’s schedule that were nothing more than covers for his infidelity.
Henry runs a hand through his hair, bracing himself as he sees the woman gearing up to say something else to him. He prays that it isn’t more inquiring about Daniel or unsolicited probing into their relationship.
Henry suddenly feels a hand on the small of his back. He looks to the left and almost sighs loudly in relief to find his best friend beside him, champagne flute in his free hand.
“I must whisk our dear Henry away. I’m overdue for a catch up and this beautiful man traveled across the sea just to be here with me tonight,” Pez says to the others.
Henry awkwardly waves and says his goodbyes before turning away from the group.
“Thanks for that,” he says under his breath as he and Pez begin to shuffle away.
Pez hands the glass to Henry of which Henry gratefully accepts.
“That uneasy laugh was practically a Bat-Signal. I knew I was needed.” Pez smiles warmly. “It’s so good to see you in person, Hazza. This city is nothing without you, darling.”
Henry jokingly rolls his eyes but he’s admittedly touched. He’s missed Pez a great deal too even though they visit each other and keep in touch just about every day.
“Well, good thing you’ve got me for a few weeks then, huh?”
Pez grins and bumps his shoulder against Henry’s just before snagging a high table for them to settle in. Between the decor and the quality of drinks, it’s obvious alone in this cocktail hour that no expense has been spared for the Okonjo Foundation’s gala. Henry can only imagine what the hall where the main event is set to start in a few minutes must look like.
As he spends the vast majority of his time back home in England, Henry’s excitement for this evening can’t be overstated. Being back in New York never ceases to put his mind at ease. He supposes he should feel guilty for the thought. He thinks again of Daniel, of the fact that he’s on this trip alone without his husband of two years but the way Henry sees it, it’s hardly different than any other time.
He and Daniel always spend more time apart than together. It’s always been a truth of their marriage– for better or for worse.
Their union was logical. Even with her bigoted thinking, his grandmother couldn’t deny that the combined forces of FMW and Daniel’s lucrative tech company put them in even better standings on a global scale. For Henry, that was truly secondary. He’d fallen hard for Daniel, drawn in by his passion for his dreams, his ambition. At a time when Henry had personally felt so uncertain about his direction in life, it’d been remarkable to find someone who had such a strong sense of self.
In hindsight, he’s been seeing the downside of that. It’d made it so Henry was far more forgiving on things he’d opted to turn a blind eye to.
Henry pushes those thoughts aside once more. Now isn’t the time to dwell on negatives. Tonight is meant to be a celebration, a time for joy and togetherness for a worthy cause.
Henry takes a sip of his drink and continues to survey the crowd as Pez gets a glass of his own from a passing waiter.
“Addressing the large elephant in the room, but I take it Daniel still couldn’t make a shift in his schedule?”
Henry sighs and shakes his head.
“No, he couldn’t. I’m sorry he wasn’t able to attend, but I’m sure he’ll do his best to make it next time.”
Pez snorts.
“I’ll lament in my diary later,” he says dryly.
Henry knows better than to say anything more on the matter. Pez, he acknowledges, has good reason to dislike Daniel. No one holds a grudge better than Pez on behalf of someone he loves. Henry can’t fault him. Some days he secretly envies Pez’s standpoint though he doubts he’d ever say that aloud. All it took was one night of Henry breaking down to Pez in the early days of his relationship with Daniel for Pez to mark him as enemy number one.
It didn’t matter that Daniel had promised he changed, that he would never betray Henry’s trust again. It didn’t matter that Henry had decided to let it go and keep trying. The damage was done in Pez’s eyes and always would be.
“So, I have a bit of a confession to make,” Pez says, switching gears.
Henry raises a brow, instantly suspicious. He’s intrigued but with a friend like Pez, things could go either way.
“Should I be nervous?”
Pez bites on the corner of his lip.
“Well, that’s subjective.”
“That sounds like a yes.”
Pez waves him off.
“I wasn’t lying before when I said I wanted to catch up. There is an update I want to share but it’s not exactly about me.”
Henry tries and fails to guess where Pez might be alluding to.
“I feel like I’m conversing with the Cheshire Cat. What are you on about?”
Pez pauses for a beat, lightly drumming his fingers on the clothed tabletop.
“Alex is coming tonight,” Pez says. The words are said so casually, it’s as if Pez is merely making commentary on the floral arrangements.
Henry swears his heart stops for a moment. His mind floods with memories of his college ex, his first love. The suddenness of hearing his name, of knowing he’ll be face to face with him for the first time in almost ten years makes Henry’s mouth go dry.
“Alex? M-my Alex? Well not my Alex.” Henry sighs. “Don’t look at me like that. You know what I mean.”
“Mhmm,” Pez hums, brows rising over the rim of his champagne flute as he takes a sip.
Flustered, Henry downs the contents of his own in one gulp.
In all fairness, he should have expected this. He’s known full well that Pez and Alex have stayed friends over the years. After all, Pez wasn’t the one that dated and subsequently fell in love with Alex. They were far more equipped to handle Alex’s move back to the U.S once Alex’s year abroad was up after second year.
In hindsight, Henry knows he could have done more to try and be an active part of Alex’s life, but it’d hurt too much to say goodbye in the first place. A clean break felt like the only way to push through. He’s heard bits and pieces about Alex’s life via offhand comments from Pez and the occasional cyberstalking.
He knows Alex managed to pass the bar on his first try. He knows Alex lives here in New York City and has been thriving at his practice. He knows, in his bones, that he should have prepared for this.
“Easy there now. This isn’t tequila. If you want shots, we can go to a bar after my shindig has ended.”
Stronger grade alcohol sounds like a dream now.
Henry keeps watch of the room, eyes scanning like he’s anticipating a potential threat. He figures preparedness is his best chance. If he can locate Alex before his ex finds him, he’ll stand a better chance of bracing for impact.
It takes another ten minutes but there, a few feet away, Henry spots a familiar head of curls. Even though his back is currently to them, Henry can easily recognize Alex. No amount of time could ever disabuse him of that skill.
Henry is a married man. His heart should not be reacting to Alex and yet it jackhammers behind his ribs all the same. He tells himself it’s just nerves and excitement in seeing an old friend. He thinks nothing of the fact that, in the almost ten years since they broke up, Alex still very much owns his heart.
Alex turns and looks around the room. He seems adorably unsure of himself in this sea of people, clearly trying to find a familiar face.
Pez squeaks, spotting Alex now, and places his empty glass on a passing tray.
“Alexander,” Pez sings loudly like a long lost Schuyler sister.
Alex smiles and follows the sound of his name being sung to where Henry and Pez stand. There’s a brief look of surprise on Alex’s face when his eyes land on Henry. His smile is still in place but it morphs into something a little different, something a bit softer. Perhaps even shyer and reminiscent of the man Henry once knew.
Henry only has a few seconds to collect himself before Alex starts coming over to them.
Henry takes stock of Alex as he approaches, snaking his way smoothly through the crowds. Time has been good to Alex, ridiculously so. If Henry is being frank, Alex has only gotten hotter—objectively speaking, of course. His hair is a little longer. A hint of a 5 o’clock shadow dusts his face. He’s even opted to wear his wire-framed glasses tonight. Needless to say, the look as a whole works.
It’s been one thing to see pictures of Alex online. It’s quite another to be faced with him in the flesh.
“Alex,” Henry greets softly, his eyes still raking over his ex as he joins him and Pez.
Suddenly Henry feels like he’s in university all over again. His heart flutters, his stomach twisting into knots. It’s been forever and yet still, Alex makes him nervous.
“It’s been…far too long.”
“Eight years, if you can believe it,” Alex replies.
Henry can. He’s loathed every single year that’s separated them since they phased each other out.
“You look great,” he says, hoping it’s not too forward of a compliment to pay to an ex.
Alex takes it in stride, placing a hand at his sternum and smiling.
“So do you.”
Alex reaches out a hand and touches the lapel of Henry’s tux. Henry’s breath hitches a little at the unexpected move.
“Very nice,” Alex says, running his palm down the fabric. Henry wonders if Alex can feel his heart racing two layers of clothing below.
Pez looks between the two of them, mischief in his eyes.
“Shall I give you boys a moment to catch up? As much as I’d love to stay and witness this epic reunion, I must attend to my other guests.”
Alex’s smile spreads slow and sweet across his face.
“I think Henry and I can manage just fine on our own.”
There’s something about hearing his name in Alex’s voice after all this time that makes Henry’s blood race faster.
“Oh, I’m sure you two can.”
Henry gives Pez a pointed look but it’s moot. His best friend never feels shame. Henry knows he’s unlikely to start now.
Pez throws his arms over Henry’s and Alex’s shoulders, pulling them both in on either side of him.
“It’s nice to have the gang back together for a spell, isn’t it? Go on, lads. Eat, drink, and be merry. I’ll see you all later.”
With that, Pez detangles himself and cozies up to a group nearby that instantly fawns over him. Henry hopes he can muster up even a fraction of Pez’s confidence to get through this evening with Alex.
“Do you know what table you’re seated at tonight?” Alex asks.
Henry looks away from where Pez has just said something to make the cluster of people laugh, refocusing his attention on Alex. It’s a bit surreal to be standing in front of him now after losing contact for almost a decade. He’s glad, if nothing else, that Alex isn’t somehow holding it against him. Their split was amicable; neither was to blame. Life just pulled them in different directions, on opposite sides of an entire ocean.
“Lucky number 13,” he answers.
“Must be lucky for real,” Alex says, holding his name card up between his fingers. “That’s my table, too.”
Henry doubts it’s luck or even coincidence. He has no doubt Pez has played puppet master with the seating arrangement. Though, if all goes well tonight, perhaps he’ll have to thank Pez for the trickery and meddling in the end.
Cocktail hour finishes and Henry follows the herd of attendees into the banquet hall, Alex close at his side. Together they navigate and find their shared table, taking seats beside one another.
Henry is glad as others start settling into the empty chairs around the table. It helps to take the pressure off of figuring out how exactly to hold a conversation with an ex he’s never quite gotten over.
Alex has always been extraordinarily good at talking with strangers, able to strike up lengthy conversations and lively debates about literally anything.
It’s a skill he hasn’t lost; Alex keeps dialogue going with everyone, Henry included, in between the night’s festivities. Alex is every bit as charming and alluring as he had been back in their early twenties. He’s only grown more self-assured and Henry can’t help but to wonder what life events between then and now might have filled Alex in with such color.
As the evening comes to a close, Henry finds he feels a little cheated out of fully experiencing Alex.
When it’s down to just them at the table once more, Henry knows it’s now or never to seize his chance.
“Say, you wouldn’t happen to be free tomorrow or so, would you? I’d like to see you again and actually get to talk to you…just the two of us.”
Alex looks a little surprised and for one terrifying moment, Henry worries he might’ve somehow misread Alex’s willingness to interact with him tonight. Alex quickly recovers and nods.
“Yeah, I could manage that. Saturday might be better, but…take my number. We can work out a plan.”
Henry hands his phone over to Alex. He finds himself focusing on Alex’s fingers as he types in his number.
No ring, he notes. That could mean nothing. Quite frankly, it shouldn’t even mean anything to Henry of all people.
Still. Henry notices.
“I texted myself, so I’ve got yours too now,” Alex says, handing the device over and reshifting Henry’s focus.
“Great, thank you,” he says awkwardly, half distracted and unsure how to respond.
Alex laughs. Henry blushes.
“How long are you here for?” Alex asks, nudging his knee to Henry’s. The zip of electricity that runs through Henry’s veins at that bit of contact is alarming.
“Um, a month. Pez and I have some work to do with the foundation. I might have to stay longer, but we’ll see how these plans shake out over the next few weeks.”
“Cool. Assuming you don’t get tired of me after the next time we hang out, maybe we could see each other again?”
Henry raises a brow.
“Already looking to pencil yourself into my schedule?”
Alex simply shrugs smoothly and rests back in his chair.
“Well, you’re a busy man from what I can tell. Who knows when I’ll get to see you again while you’re Stateside.”
“It certainly won’t be another eight years, I can at least tell you that much.”
Alex sets his elbow on the table and holds out his pinky finger out to Henry.
“Kicking it old school and bringing out the big guns here. I’m gonna need you to swear it.”
Henry laughs at the absurdity but he hooks his finger with Alex’s. He stops laughing as Alex holds his gaze. Henry subconsciously leans closer, his voice a bit low.
“I promise, Alexander Gabriel Claremont-Diaz. We’ll see plenty of each other while I’m here. I give you my word.”
Something flickers in Alex’s eyes at that. It leaves Henry pleasantly shaken.
In the two days following the gala, Henry keeps to his promise. With Alex’s number at hand, the two effortlessly fall into a rhythm of texting, trading random memes and commentary on their day-to-day life just like they did back in university. There’d always been an ease when it came to being around Alex and Henry has been relieved to see that it hasn’t been lost to time.
They make good on their goal to see each other face to face again, solidifying plans to meet for drinks downtown.
As much as Henry has liked the excitement that comes from a new text notification from Alex, nothing comes even remotely close to experiencing him in real time.
He’s lost track of how long they’ve been seated at the bar now as they ply themselves with drinks and trips down memory lane. Henry’s fairly certain he could talk his voice hoarse, but words keep finding them both. Conversation has, admittedly, been surface level and Henry’s curiosity to dig a little deeper rears its head.
He puts the blame on the gin and tonics he’s been nursing all night and pushes forward.
“Can I ask you something a bit personal?”
Alex smirks and takes a gulp of his drink.
“Ah, now we’re getting to the good stuff. I was waiting for this,” he muses, rubbing his hands together. “Lay it on me.”
“Do you have anyone special in your life?”
Alex gives a half smile and combs a hand through his curls.
“Not at the moment, no. Honestly, work has taken up a good chunk of my attention. Long days and nights don’t typically make for the best selling points in a relationship.”
Henry’s eyes narrow a little in thought.
“I know you. You make the time when and where you can. You only bury yourself in work when you don't want to focus on other things. I hope you’re still leaving your heart open to romance.”
Alex studies him in kind.
“I’m trying to keep an open mind, but it’s not, like, a pressing concern. If it happens, it happens. I don't know if I can handle more than casual now with how my life is. But I also know that I don’t want to…settle if I were to have the chance at something real.”
Though Alex has no real way of knowing it, he’s hit a nerve for Henry. Daniel flashes in his mind’s eye. Their marriage has felt like the epitome of settling, of complacency.
“I’d ask you the same question, but judging by that shiny piece of hardware on your left hand, I already know the answer,” Alex says. “Then again, your wedding was headline news. You married one of the biggest tech bros out there. I did not see that coming.”
Henry shakes his glass, letting the ice clink.
“Yeah…I didn’t really think that when I’d married, it’d be such a spectacle. I always pictured something a bit modest and quaint.”
Alex’s brows furrow.
“How’d you go from zero to a thousand on that front then?”
Henry shrugs. “It was a compromise.”
“You call that a compromise on a small scale wedding? H, it got mentioned on CNN.”
Henry winces a little at the memory. There was far too much coverage about his nuptials. The whole thing felt silly then and still does now.
“Daniel knows a great deal of people, as does my family. Us…merging together…it could never have been a small feat.”
“Interesting choice of word, merge. Sounds transactional.”
In many ways, that’s exactly what it was. Still, to hear it so plainly from Alex of all people makes him uneasy.
Henry stabs at his drink with the little red straw it came with.
“It’s complicated.”
“What is this? A 2000s Facebook status?”
Henry’s lips pinch together before taking a sip of his drink.
“Sorry, not trying to be the asshole ex and yet I’m really nailing the role.”
Henry laughs.
“It’s okay. I know, woe is me. I have a relatively perfect life. I’m aware most people would kill to have even a tenth of what I do so I shouldn’t complain.”
Alex blows a raspberry.
“Fuck that. If you aren’t happy about something, you’ve got just as much right as the rest of us to vent about it.”
Alex doesn’t know the half of it.
“So,” Alex says, “the bottom line here is that you’re married…just not so happily.”
“Someone break out the world’s smallest violin, right?” Henry replies with a light snort.
Alex shakes his head.
“Don’t do that,” he says gently. “Don’t downplay how you’re feeling. It’s not somehow less than.”
Henry smiles a little. It’s nice to have permission to feel what he’s feeling.
“Thank you.”
“Of course.” Alex reaches for his glass and studies him for a moment.
“Can I be a little nosy now and ask what makes it so bad?”
Henry purses his lips, deciding where to begin.
“We had a rough start. What didn’t make it into all the press was the fact that he cheated on me…multiple times when we first began seeing each other. Even when we said it was exclusive. He’s powerful, rich, and handsome. People are drawn to him and he likes that. It’s a hard temptation to ignore.”
“And you forgave him?”
There’s no judgment in Alex’s question. It honestly seems like he simply wants to understand.
“I did and we moved on from it, but he’s away so often and it feels like he’s okay without me. Sometimes I think he actually prefers it...the freedom and excitement of traveling and meeting new people all the time. I think he might still be with other people while he’s away. Or maybe it’s just all in my head, I don’t know. We don’t talk as much as we should. We aren’t really…close, I guess you could say.”
“Intimate you mean?”
Henry’s face heats up a little.
“In that sense too. But it’s more than that. He feels so far from me. Marriage…it’s… it’s a lot harder than I was expecting it to be. I’ve told you about my parents back at school. It was beautiful to see them when I was growing up, to be a product of a real love story. What they had was a genuine partnership, you know? That’s what I always thought I’d find. At least, it’s what I’ve always wanted. It was friendship and romance all wrapped into one.”
“And you don’t have that with Daniel?”
Henry laughs humorlessly and downs his drink.
“I barely have an acquaintance in him most days, never mind a loyal, doting husband.”
Henry shakes his head and wipes the corner of his mouth with his thumb before raking a hand through his hair. He feels out of sorts and unkempt.
“I must sound horrid blathering on. I swear I’m not usually like this,” he says, dropping his hand to the table.
“You sound honest to me. More people should be when it comes to things like this. Hell, I know marriages can be tough. I had a front row seat with my parents. It can be exhausting to push through every day with something that should come naturally. Love, out of all things in the world, should be easy.”
Alex puts a hand over Henry’s.
“I’m really sorry to hear things have been so hard for you. You’re an amazing guy, Hen. You don’t deserve that. You should be with someone who makes you feel good all the time, someone who doesn’t take you for granted,” he says, his thumb gently soothing the back of Henry’s hand.
Henry looks down at their hands and slowly back up to Alex’s face in surprise at his touch. Alex’s eyes widen in panic.
“Sorry, I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable,” he says, starting to pull away.
“No, wait,” Henry interjects quickly, putting his other hand over Alex to keep him in place. It’s warm and comforting, this shared contact.
“So much in my life feels different. It’s been a while for us, but this somehow feels the same. It’s nice to know I still have you as a friend, that I haven’t lost you.”
Alex’s expression grows soft as he searches Henry’s eyes.
“You can never lose what’s always been yours.”
Henry isn’t sure if he’s hearing what he wants, taking deeper meaning in Alex’s words. The alcohol in his bloodstream is making him feel far too loose. Maybe his discernment isn’t the best right now.
“Last call!” the bartender announces.
Henry jumps in his seat a little and pulls his hands away, looking down at his watch.
“Wow, is that really the time?”
He looks around. Somehow without him noticing, the number of patrons dwindled significantly. He and Alex are among the last few holdouts at the bar.
Alex looks a little dazed too as he glances around.
They close out their tab, Henry insisting on covering both their orders. He figures it’s the least he can do for keeping Alex out so late.
Henry gets to his feet, swaying a little as he does so. Now that he’s standing upright, he realizes just how much he’s had.
“Do you need me to take you home?” Alex asks.
“Trying to steal my virtue, are we?”
“Why, Henry. You’re a married man. I would never do such a thing,” Alex says in a mocked, scandalized voice.
Henry steps closer, his eyes drifting to Alex’s smile as the man laughs at his own joke.
“You wouldn’t even fantasize about it?”
Alex searches his face. Henry’s focus is completely shot; his vision blurs a bit but he sees Alex pull in a breath, his eyes flashing briefly with something that looks an awful lot like want.
Alex blinks twice and shakes his head, almost as if to clear it.
“You’re really wasted,” Alex mumbles. “Maybe I should actually get you home myself for real.”
Henry shakes his head. He’d give anything to take his comment back, to undo killing the good energy between them.
“I’m fine. Honest, it’s okay. I’m just a tad bit tipsy, not drunk,” he corrects.
Alex still looks unsure, but eventually concedes as they head outside.
“So. What’s the verdict then?” Alex asks as they both order their rideshares.
Henry’s car is slated to come in three minutes. That hardly feels like any time at all.
“What do you mean?”
“We said if all goes well tonight, you’d pencil me in for another…hang.”
Henry smiles.
“Hang? Are we surfers now? Gonna catch a gnarly wave?” he muses. As if there was any doubt before, he knows for a fact now that he’s certainly had too much to drink tonight.
But it makes Alex smile and playfully rolls his eyes so it feels worth it.
“I don’t know what to call these!” Alex laughs. “Meetups? Get togethers? That sounds so freaking stuffy.”
Henry scrunches up his nose.
“Point taken. We’ll workshop the name. In the meantime, the verdict is in fact in. I’m sentencing us to more time spent together very soon. I’d love another hang.”
Alex laughs and his smile is so bright it’s almost like sunshine in the dead of night.
“God, we really do have to find a name. We can’t exactly call them dates,” Henry says.
“Well, we could. Friend dates are totally a thing.”
Henry raises a brow, his body pleasantly warm from his slew of gin and tonics. It makes him feel bolder, more daring. More foolish, perhaps.
“Is that what we are then? Friends?”
Alex rests his back against the bricks of the building, the neon signs reflected in his eyes. It practically makes them shimmer. Henry feels drawn to him even more.
“I’d like to think so.” Alex pauses. “Estranged, but getting closer by the minute,” he says decidedly.
Henry considers this.
“I like the sound of that…of getting closer to you.”
Alex looks taken aback and once more Henry thinks he’s let too much slip tonight.
He looks away as he hears car tires and watches a silver SUV pull up to the curb. Henry sighs in relief as he registers the plate number as the one on his app.
Your driver is here, it reads. And not a moment too soon, Henry thinks.
“This is me. I’ll see you…for the next hang,” he tries to joke, but Alex’s eyes are still fixed on him like he’s trying to make sense of something, his lips parted.
Henry holds out for what he might say and tries not to be too disappointed when it’s a simple pleasantry.
“Get home safely, Henry. We’ll talk again soon.”
Such a promise shouldn’t be so thrilling.

In today’s competitive marketplace, packaging is more than just a protective shell—it’s an essential branding and marketing tool. For businesses across industries, custom corrugated box packaging offers the perfect balance of functionality, creativity, and sustainability. Whether you're an e-commerce brand, a retail business, or a manufacturer, investing in custom-designed corrugated boxes can transform the way your customers perceive and interact with your product.
This article explores the importance, benefits, design elements, and best practices involved in creating custom corrugated packaging that leaves a lasting impression.
Why Corrugated Boxes?
Corrugated boxes, made from fluted paperboard sandwiched between liners, are widely used due to their durability, light weight, and eco-friendliness. But what makes custom corrugated box design stand out is the ability to:
Reflect brand identity
Enhance unboxing experiences
Improve product protection
Streamline shipping logistics
Reduce packaging waste
With the right design approach, these boxes evolve from plain brown containers into strategic brand assets.
Key Benefits of Custom Corrugated Box Design
1. Strong Brand Presence
Custom printed boxes serve as a mobile billboard. A well-designed box with logos, brand colors, taglines, and unique graphics reinforces your identity at every stage of the delivery process.
2. Enhanced Customer Experience
In the age of social media and unboxing videos, customers crave memorable packaging. Custom corrugated designs can include inserts, messages, and aesthetic elements that elevate the unpacking experience.
3. Tailored Fit for Products
Custom sizing ensures your product is securely housed during transit. This minimizes movement, prevents damage, and reduces the need for excessive void fill like bubble wrap or peanuts.
4. Sustainability

Single Wall Boxes: Strong, Eco-Friendly Packaging Choice
Single wall boxes are a trusted packaging option for both commercial and domestic use. They are made from a single layer of corrugated cardboard, offering a good balance between strength and affordability. Ideal for lightweight to medium-weight items, these boxes are widely used in ecommerce, retail, and removals.
This article explores the structure, strength, sustainability, and best use cases of single wall boxes. We also compare them with double wall boxes and bespoke solutions, guiding you in choosing the right box for your needs—whether you're packing, posting, or storing.

What Are Single Wall Boxes?
Single wall boxes consist of a single layer of corrugated fluting enclosed between two linerboards. They are used in shipping, storage, and ecommerce packaging due to their cost-efficiency and ease of handling.
They differ from double wall boxes, which have two corrugated layers for added durability. For most lightweight goods, single wall packaging provides reliable protection without the added material cost.
Understanding the Structure of a Single-Wall Cardboard Box
The term "single wall" refers to the single corrugated layer inside the cardboard sheet. This layer provides structure and shock absorption.
Corrugated fluting: This is the wavy middle layer that adds cushioning and rigidity.
Linerboards: These flat outer sheets protect the fluting and give the box its finished appearance.
Fluting types:
B-flute: Approximately 3.2 mm thick; suitable for moderate protection and strength.
E-flute: Around 1.6 mm thick; commonly used for retail and display packaging.
Compared to a single wall carton, double wall boxes are more resistant to crushing but are also heavier and costlier.
Common Sizes and Types Available
Single wall boxes are manufactured in various dimensions for different use cases.
Small Cube Single Wall Boxes: Ideal for shipping books, cosmetics, and small tech items. These are compact and suitable for postal boxes or ecommerce packaging.
Large Single Wall Boxes: Suitable for bulkier yet lightweight items, such as clothing or plastic containers. Often used in home moves or stock storage.
Single wall carton types: Available in flat-pack formats for easy storage, and custom-sized options for bespoke applications.

Key Features and Specifications
These boxes offer dependable performance when matched with the right contents and transport conditions.
Single Wall Boxes Thickness and Strength
Box strength is largely influenced by thickness, which comes from the fluting profile.
Typical thickness: Ranges from 1.5 mm (E-flute) to 4 mm (B-flute).
Impact on strength: Thicker fluting increases compression strength, suitable for stacking and moderate shipping demands.
Material used: Made from corrugated cardboard, providing both lightness and structural support for general use.
Weight Capacity of Single Walled Cardboard Boxes
These boxes are best suited for medium and low-weight items.
Weight range: Can typically support 7–15 kg, depending on box size and fluting.
Limitations: Not recommended for fragile or heavy goods that need extra support.
Precaution: Use packing tape, black pallet wrap, or switch to double wall boxes for added protection in demanding conditions.
Sustainability and Materials
Sustainability is a key benefit of single wall packaging, especially for eco-conscious businesses.
Recyclability: 100% recyclable and made from renewable materials.
Environmental comparison:
Outperforms plastic carrier bags in terms of environmental impact.
Offers greater protection than paper bags while maintaining biodegradability.
Eco-aligned strategy: Ideal for companies committed to eco-friendly packaging practices and circular economy values.
When to Use Single Wall Boxes
Understanding when to choose single wall packaging ensures both efficiency and cost control.
Ideal Applications
These boxes are effective for most general-purpose packaging needs.
Postal packaging: Lightweight items for courier or post, such as documents and electronics.
Retail & ecommerce: Used in shelf-ready packaging, white postal boxes, and book wraps.
Home and office use: Suitable for moving boxes, storage boxes, and light removal boxes.
When to Choose Double Wall or Bespoke Packaging Instead
Heavier or fragile goods require more durable packaging.
Double wall boxes: Preferred for long-distance or heavy item shipping due to their dual fluting layer.
Bespoke packaging: Recommended when product dimensions are irregular or when branding is important.
Complementary items: Add pallet wrap, furniture covers, or pallet boxes for protection during transit.
Enhancing Your Packaging with Protective Extras
Even the right box needs additional protection for certain items.
How to Pack Items in Single Wall Boxes Securely
Secure packing prevents damage and maximises space efficiency.
Internal cushioning: Use bubble wrap, corrugated paper rolls, or padded envelopes to protect contents.
Sealing: Apply strong packing tape or masking tape to seal edges and flaps tightly.
Void fill: Fill empty space to prevent item movement during transit.
Labelling and Delivery Readiness
Accurate and secure labelling helps ensure successful deliveries.
Document holders: Attach a board backed envelope or document enclosed wallets for invoices and shipping labels.
Ecommerce system integration: Print labels directly from your fulfilment software to speed up operations.
External add-ons: Pair boxes with grey mailing bags or postal packaging for multi-layered protection.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Corrugated Board Market Leaders: Who's Innovating the Industry?
Corrugated Board Industry Overview
The global Corrugated Board Market reached a valuation of USD 134.7 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% from 2023 to 2030. The primary drivers fueling this market growth are the worldwide expansion of the e-commerce sector and the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. However, the limited durability of corrugated boards is anticipated to hinder market growth. Plastic is a prevalent packaging material across various industries, including food and beverage, healthcare, cosmetics and personal care, and consumer goods. Nevertheless, the rising consumption of plastic is having a detrimental effect on the environment.
According to the UN, the world generates 300 million tons of plastic waste annually, roughly equivalent to the total weight of the human population. To address this enormous volume of yearly plastic waste, the concept of sustainable packaging has been embraced. End-use industries are transitioning from plastic packaging to corrugated board packaging to meet the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly packaging options.
Detailed Segmentation:

7 Types of Packaging Boxes and When to Use Each One
When it comes to protecting products, impressing customers, and controlling costs, choosing the right packaging box makes a big difference.
From a simple corrugated shipping box to a custom-designed specialty box, you have many options to fit specific needs. In fact, the global demand for smart and efficient packaging is growing, with e-commerce expected to account for 23% of global retail sales by 2027.
Businesses also face new pressures, like choosing sustainable materials and leveraging creative designs to stand out. According to studies, 74% of consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging, and this desire for sustainability is driving changes across the entire industry.
Whether you sell online or in a physical store, understanding key box types is your first step toward choosing the best packaging solution.

Below, we’ll explore seven types of packaging boxes, grouped into four sections to keep things simple. We’ll also share when to use each packaging box, how to spot trends, and a few resources that can help you design and source them seamlessly.
Corrugated Packaging Box and Folding Carton Packaging Box
Corrugated packaging box designs are some of the most popular choices for shipping and protecting goods. These boxes usually have multiple layers of paper—an inside liner, an outer liner, and a fluted corrugated medium in between—that make them lightweight but strong.
Corrugated boxes are perfect if you need to ship heavier items or valuables over long distances. They come in numerous thicknesses and strengths, which is helpful if your products vary in weight. Because they’re made mostly of paper, corrugated boxes can also be recycled, fitting well into the growing trend of sustainable packaging solutions.
Businesses like DS Smith and Smurfit Kappa have been leaders in creating more earth-friendly corrugated materials despite recent profit slumps due to market fluctuations.
When to use corrugated boxes:
For shipping breakable or heavy items that need sturdier protection.
When you need a standard solution that balances cost, durability, and eco-friendliness.
If you want a packaging box that can be customized easily with printed logos and branding.
Folding carton packaging box solutions are typically seen in retail. They’re made from paperboard that’s cut, folded, and laminated. You’ll find these for items like cereal, personal care products, or electronics accessories.

Because folding cartons use less material than heavy-duty corrugated boxes, they can be more cost-effective, especially for lightweight or smaller items. They also allow for high-quality printing and eye-catching designs. This style is especially popular in regions pushing for minimalistic packaging that still looks professional on store shelves.
Businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint may lean on partners like Paper Mart or Pack Plus Printing, which focus on sustainable inks and recycled paperboard options.
When to use folding carton boxes:
For lighter retail products that benefit from vibrant graphics.
If you want a streamlined, cost-effective box for in-store display.
When you’d like a more minimal, eco-friendly approach for your product packaging.
Rigid Packaging Box and Mailer Packaging Box
A rigid packaging box is your go-to for high-end, luxurious presentations. Often constructed with thick cardboard or chipboard, these boxes don’t fold or collapse.
High-end retailers—especially those selling jewelry, electronics, or premium gift items—use rigid boxes for the sleek, sturdy look they offer. The unboxing experience can matter a lot to shoppers, and a rigid box can increase the perceived value of your product.
This ties into a significant packaging trend: creating a memorable, aesthetically pleasing design. Emerging data from smart packaging solutions providers like OFF Packaging shows that personalized and interactive features raise customer engagement. If your brand wants to appear more upscale, a well-designed rigid packaging box is a strong choice.
When to use rigid boxes:
When selling luxury items such as specialty chocolates, cosmetics, or electronics.
If you want a packaging box that provides a premium unboxing experience.
When product presentation is part of your brand’s identity and you need sturdy, non-collapsible packaging.

Meanwhile, a mailer packaging box is popular for shipping smaller items, subscription products, or e-commerce goods. Commonly seen in monthly subscription services, mailer boxes can be made of corrugated or lightweight paperboard and are often self-locking, which means you don’t need tape to seal them.
Many companies are going with minimalist and eco-friendly mailer box designs, aligning with the consumer push for reduced materials. Innovative organizations like Smart Packaging Hub and International PaperBox are developing mailer boxes that use less paper and biodegradable inks.
Mailers are also easy to store before use because they arrive flat. Once assembled, they have a neat tuck-top and sturdy walls that protect items in transit.
When to use mailer boxes:
For smaller or lightweight products that don’t require heavy packaging.
If you want an easy way to incorporate branding both inside and outside the box.
When aiming for a simple, secure solution for shipping direct-to-consumer goods.
Telescopic Packaging Box and Gable Packaging Box
A telescopic packaging box comes in two parts: a separate top and bottom that can slide over each other. This box is especially useful for odd-shaped items or products with variable sizes. Telescopic boxes offer flexibility—the lid can extend or shorten based on the item’s height.
Telescopic boxes are generally made from corrugated board or strong paperboard, which can handle a wide range of contents, from apparel to specialty tools. Brands employing advanced techniques such as digital printing—offered by resources like The Dieline or Packaging Digestcan decorate these boxes with detailed artwork or branding elements.
The design is both functional and elegant for those who want something more distinctive than a standard mailing box.
When to use telescopic boxes:
For items that vary in height or thickness, like stackable apparel or certain electronics.
If you need a high level of customization in both design and shape.
When you want sturdy packaging without sacrificing a more refined, layered reveal.
Gable packaging box designs, on the other hand, are known for their signature handle on top. You’ll see these at events like parties or weddings, where a take-home treat or gift might be placed inside. Gable boxes are also common for food items, such as takeout meals, because they can be carried easily.

Thanks to their built-in handle, gable boxes are convenient and don’t necessarily need a separate bag. They’re usually produced with lightweight but durable paperboard. With sustainability in mind, many companies are creating gable boxes that use biodegradable materials.
Packlane, an online packaging platform, allows small businesses to customize gable boxes quickly for events or short-run product launches—perfect if you need a unique design without large minimum orders.
When to use gable boxes:
For gift packaging, special events, or promotional giveaways.
If you need a built-in handle for easy transport.
When creating a fun, memorable unboxing moment that stands out from typical packaging box designs.
Specialty Packaging Box
A specialty packaging box can include everything from wooden crates and round cardboard cylinders to high-tech smart packaging. Specialty boxes are crafted to deliver a unique shape, material, or function.
They’re perfect for luxury brands launching limited-edition products or for businesses that want something truly distinctive. For instance, you could have a magnetic closure box that feels premium, or you could embed QR codes for interactive experiences.
Technologies like ArtiosCAD streamline the design process, even for unusual shapes. EcoImpact-COMPASS can then measure the environmental impact of these designs. As more brands seek personalization and sustainability, specialty boxes might feature recycled hardwoods, compostable plastics, or advanced printing techniques to catch consumers’ eyes.
When to use specialty boxes:
If your product has an unusual shape or needs extra protection (like certain electronics).
When you want a breathtaking reveal that enhances your brand story.
If you’re aiming to stand out in a crowded market and can invest in a unique box structure.
Because consumers increasingly judge products by how they’re packaged, a specialty packaging box offers endless room for creativity. It can deliver not just a product but an experience. This aligns with the move toward minimalist and environmentally conscious designs.
Even large brands like Mondi and Stora Enso have noted that, despite industry downturns, companies are willing to pay for innovation if it means connecting with buyers on a deeper level. Specialty packaging can incorporate technology like NFC tags, scanning codes, or peel-back layers for hidden details. If your product is high-margin, investing in a specialty box can lead to better brand loyalty and shareable unboxing on social media.
Conclusion
Selecting the right packaging box is about balancing many factors: the fragility of your items, the expectations of your customers, your brand’s style, and how sustainable you want to be.
Industry resources like The Dieline and Packaging Digest keep you updated on emerging trends and best practices. Whether you opt for a folding carton, mailer box, telescopic box, gable box, or a fully customized specialty packaging box, remember that each choice impacts your brand image and bottom line.
By taking time to research and plan, you’ll deliver products that not only look great but arrive safely and align with your sustainability goals—all while wowing your customers from the moment they see the box.

Why Corrugated Paper Rolls Are the Future of Sustainable Packaging

Firms and buyers are both reverting to environmentally friendly substitutes for packaging materials as the world continues to become more conscious of the environmental impact. At the forefront of these innovative solutions are corrugated paper rolls, which offer a unique combination of functionality, flexibility, and sustainability, making them one of the most innovative options in the packaging industry.
The Environmental Crisis in Packaging
Our worldwide reliance on single-use plastics has brought an environmental emergency of immense proportions. With more than 380 million tons of plastic created each year and less than 9% being successfully recycled, packaging waste fills our landfills and oceans. This is a reality that has led to a fundamental transformation in regulatory strategy and consumer attitudes.
Today's consumers increasingly take sustainability into account when making purchase decisions, with recent studies indicating that 73% of consumers will pay extra for products that have environmentally friendly packaging. Meanwhile, governments globally are banning plastics and enacting extended producer responsibility legislation that puts the cost of waste management on manufacturers.
The Corrugated Revolution
In this shifting landscape, corrugated paper roll packaging has been a top choice as a sustainable option. The design of the material—with a fluted middle layer nestled between flat liner sheets—gives it extraordinary strength and cushioning ability yet is lightweight and biodegradable.
Unlike plastic solutions, which they are modeled after, these paper-based solutions are made from renewable resources, mostly sustainably managed forests in which trees are replanted regularly. The process of manufacturing has also changed, with most producers now using as much as 70% recycled material in their corrugated products.
The environmental benefits carry on through the entire product life cycle. When a corrugated paper roll is at the end of its service life, it naturally biodegrades in 2–6 months under optimal conditions, in contrast to the 500+ years needed for most plastics. Even more astounding, the corrugated recycling system is one of the most effective circular economy models, with recovery rates of over 90% in most developed economies.
Versatility Across Industries
The adaptability of corrugated packaging solutions extends far beyond simple shipping boxes. Today's corrugated paper products serve diverse needs across virtually every industry:
E-commerce: Custom-sized protective packaging that minimizes void-fill requirements
Food and beverage: FDA-compliant solutions with appropriate barrier properties
Electronics: Anti-static options with superior cushioning for fragile components
Pharmaceutical: Clean, contaminant-free packaging for medical products
Retail: High-quality printing surfaces for enhanced brand presentation
This adaptability results from ongoing development in the process of manufacturing. Modern corrugated materials are able to be treated for waterproofing, enhanced with antimicrobial characteristics, or altered for purposes of specific strengths without sacrificing their inherent sustainability.
Economic Feasibility
Most appealing to companies is that corrugated paper packaging has reached cost parity with most plastic materials. The low weight of corrugated materials lowers shipping costs, and their flat-packed storage arrangement reduces the amount of warehouse space needed.
Progressive businesses have found that conversion to corrugated solutions brings considerable financial benefits in addition to explicit material expenses. Some of these are lower compliance costs associated with plastic packaging taxes, greater brand credibility, and increased customer loyalty from green-minded shoppers.
Innovation Shaping the Future
The packaging industry for corrugated is advancing through important investments in technology. Some of the latest developments are:
Nano-cellulose reinforcement for outstanding strength-to-weight ratios
Bio-based barrier coatings with recyclability retained and added moisture resistance
Inkjet-based digital printing features for on-demand, low-waste personalization
Smart packaging integrations to track the supply chain and engage with consumers
These innovations are working methodically around traditional paper packaging limitations while preserving their underlying environmental advantages.
Material Science Behind Corrugated Paper
The success of corrugated paper is due to its special structure. The fluted center layer forms air pockets that have superior cushioning and insulation qualities. The structure enables corrugated packaging to absorb shock and guard contents using less material than solid ones. Contemporary manufacturing methods can make different flute sizes (from A-flute to F-flute) with varying strength-to-weight ratios for certain uses.
Comparative Environmental Impact
When examining life cycle assessments, corrugated paper packaging demonstrates significant environmental advantages:
Production uses 50% less energy than plastic packaging options
Produces around 70% fewer greenhouse gas emissions
Primarily employs water-based adhesives and inks that minimize chemical pollution
Certified forest stewardship guarantees raw material comes from a responsibly managed supply
Cutting-Edge Applications
Some innovative uses of corrugated packaging that demonstrate its versatility:
Temperature-controlled food delivery boxes with corrugated insulation layers
Plastic-free e-commerce mailers that adjust to product dimensions, eliminating void fill
Corrugated display stands and retail-ready packaging that reduce material needs
Lightweight automotive components using specialized high-strength corrugated materials
Market Transformation
The corrugated packaging industry is witnessing unprecedented growth, reaching 255.25 AED billion by 2026, with sustainable uses propelling most of this growth. Large companies such as Amazon, Unilever, and IKEA have incorporated corrugated packaging initiatives as part of their sustainability agendas, generating powerful case studies for others to emulate.
Consumer Education
A key part of the shift towards corrugated packaging is educating customers about proper disposal and recycling. Although corrugated packaging is extremely recyclable, food contamination, wax, or the presence of specific adhesives on their packaging to achieve maximum recovery rates.
Future Developments
Research continues in several promising areas:
Biodegradable waterproofing solutions that maintain the paper's recycleability
Integration of agricultural waste fibres to reduce dependence on wood pulp
Advanced crease patterns that maximize strength while minimizing material use
Automated packaging solutions that produce tailor-mhesives make recycling problematic. Major corporations are printing clear instructions on how to recycle corrugated boxes at the point of need
These added facts demonstrate both the technology involved in corrugated packaging and the forces of the marketplace compelling its usage, giving us a better sense of why this solution is the future of eco-friendly packaging.
Conclusion: Adopting the Change
For companies looking at eco-friendly packaging options, corrugated paper rolls are not only an environmentally friendly option but also a sound business strategy. The versatility of the material, low cost, and good public image make a strong argument for mass adoption.
As regulations become more stringent and consumer tastes continue to shift, those firms that actively adopt green packaging solutions put themselves well ahead in an increasingly environmentally aware market. The future of packaging is green—and for many uses, it is in the form of creative, flexible corrugated paper packaging that harmonizes functional needs with environmental stewardship.
By making corrugated paper roll solutions your choice today, companies aren't simply bowing to the latest fashions—they're helping to create a more sustainable packaging future, one shipment at a time.
