I was hoping going into the morning that things would turn around for the little darling, but his condition is still, well questionable. So now I reach out to the community here for their input.

So a little back-story, Pop Tart lives in a column style tank (56 gallons to be exact). He is the only fish, and there is a planter set up inside of it. I have a sponge filter, an air stone, and a heater connected. That’s on top of the drip irrigation system as well.

So a few days ago on Fourth of July, we had unkind people in our area start shooting off fireworks that sounded like bombs in close proximity to the house. This more than upset my big eel, and severum, and I am uncertain if it upset Pop Tart as well (didn’t think to look).

Fast forward to yesterday Morning (Friday morning), and I find Pop Tart nestled in the plants up top, with heavy labored breathing.Now there are several reasons why a fish can have labored breathing. Nitrate poisoning is one, ammonia another.  Oxygen deficiency can happen, especially in warmer water, so that is also an option. If a fish gets occasional live feeders there is always a chance for gill parasites introduced. Booming fire-works can also heavily stress fish, and that can lead to issues.

Now first thing I did, was test the water. PH is fine, no ammonia, no nitrite, very low nitrates (barely readable). So while the water quality seems fine, the temperature actually was off. Normally the tank trends around 76-77, but it had gone up to 80 by the time I had discovered the heater. You could see that the heater had taken in moisture. This is bad because it can rust out internal components leading to it quitting, or in this case never turning off.

When a heater overheats a tank, one of the first effects other than the increase in temperature, is that oxygen levels start to deplete. It’s simple science really, warmer water holds less oxygen. Now, Pop Tart being a species with a specialized organ, can actually handle warmer waters, and low oxygen levels. Not forever, but they can tolerate it longer enough to find their way to better waters in the wild.

When I found Pop Tart he was at the top, in the plastic plants desperately trying to get air. Since the tank is tall, and a good part of the surface area is taken by the planter my instincts lead to the higher temps causing the lower parts of the tank to go completely dead of oxygen or close to it. Since it happened while everyone was sleeping (he was fine the night before when I went to bed, I always say good night to him) I don’t know how long this condition was endured.

The other likely option could be gill flukes but I don’t see any of the traditional symptoms. I have gone over it with my family, and nothing has been doing in the house to cause water contamination from aerosols. That was an option I considered too.

Friday Morning I did a big water change to help introduce more oxygen. The heater was turned off and taken back to work so I could show my managers. Normally I am not a fan of doing this, but I feel it necessary now to tell my followers to be wary if they own the current model Eheim heaters. I have had multiple ones now take on water, and then get stuck on. They are not holding their seal like they should. I know they have a recalibration method for when they are not reaching the target temp, but that doesn’t mean anything if the seal isn’t holding water out and allowing moisture to seep in. I will be reaching out to the company by email shortly.

In any case, once I got home I removed the planter,  cleaned the sponge filter, and installed a small circulation pump. So now the entire top is opened up for better turn over, I have a new heater (Fluval now), and turned it on as of this morning.  The temp dipped to 73, but it is now heating. There is a sponge filter, an air stone, and a circulation pump running to increase oxygen flow, but he is still breathing he heavy. I got a chance to look inside his gills, and they are red. I see no signs of parasites, or flukes. Above I managed to shine a light and get a good close up of his gills, and breathing.

Normally I am the one who helps others, but in this instance I really don’t know what to do. I have aquarium salt, but I am uncertain if that would be of any use. I am assuming this is something that will have to take time. I am thinking he will need time to recover if he can. Any input at all is appreciated.

If I'm wanting to have a partially planted tank, with the bottom feeder being corycats, would black gravel or sand be better for the purpose of keeping live plants? The tank is a 29g tall with a 55g eheim filter, and it's also gonna have danios, harlequin rasboras, and neon tetras. Maybe diamonds depending on the bioload. What substrate do you think I should use? Also do you think my community mix is okay?

I wish I could be more helpful, but I don't know enough about those types of fish to really give you useful advice.I would rec sand over gravel though because I had plants in gravel before and it sucked and I kind of low key hate gravel now.
