The Ultra Base hummed with activity, the echoes of machinery and distant voices mingling in the air as you stepped into the common room. This space, usually filled with the vibrant energy of teamwork and camaraderie, felt quieter today. Shadows stretched across the room, cast by the soft light filtering through the high windows. It was a sanctuary for those who bore the weight of the world on their shoulders—especially for your husband, Ken Sato.
Ken reclined on the worn leather couch, the unmistakable markings of battle still visible on his body. His Ultraman suit, usually a source of pride, now seemed more like a burden; parts of it were scuffed and marred, with a bandage wrapped snugly around his arm, testament to the fierce fight he had endured. As you approached, the flickering overhead lights danced across his tired features, highlighting the exhaustion etched into his brow. Yet, when he caught sight of you, a weary smile broke through, illuminating his face like the dawn.
“Seeing you this upset over my injuries isn’t helping me feel better,” he said, his voice a soothing balm to your frayed nerves. You knew he tried to be strong, but his words only deepened the ache in your heart.
“It’s all fine; I can hardly feel it anymore,” you said, forcing a casual tone as you walked over to him. You settled beside him, the familiar creaking of the couch beneath you grounding you. The fabric was soft and worn, a comforting reminder of the countless hours you had spent together in this very spot.
“Your just saying that to make yourself feel better,” you replied, unable to hide the concern in your voice. You leaned in, resting your forehead against his, the warmth radiating from him comforting and familiar. His eyes, usually filled with determination, now flickered with something more vulnerable, and it stirred a protective instinct deep within you.
“Please, don’t worry so much. I’m going to be alright,” he reassured you, his tone softening as he reached up, brushing his fingers gently against your cheek. The warmth of his touch sent a ripple of calm through you, but it didn’t erase the unease gnawing at your insides.
“I don’t like seeing you in pain,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper. Just then, Emi, your beloved companion or more so adopted child in a way, made a soft, adorable noise from the corner of the room. The baby kaiju was playing with one of her toys, her wide, innocent eyes darting between you and Ken, sensing the tension in the air. She scuttled over, her body a bright spot in the otherwise somber room.
“Look at her,” you said, smiling as Emi nuzzled Ken’s arm, her affection a welcome distraction. “That’s it! You go back to bed, and I’ll bring you everything you need.” You stood up, determination surging through you. The thought of him lying there in pain fueled your resolve.
“You don’t have to do all of this…” Ken started, but you could see the warmth in his eyes as he grasped your hand, his grip firm yet tender.
“But I really like doing it,” you insisted, your heart swelling with the desire to take care of him. “I’m not only doing it for you. It’s much more fun if you’re not in pain.”
You walked over to the kitchen area, where the air was filled with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed tea. The space was modest but filled with the essence of home—a place that reflected your shared life together. Pots and pans hung from hooks on the wall, each one telling a story of countless meals cooked together, laughter shared over simmering pots, and late-night snacks.
As you prepared a cup of chamomile tea, the steam curled into the air, creating a soothing atmosphere. You glanced back at Ken, who was now attempting to sit up more comfortably on the couch. The sight tugged at your heartstrings; you could see the effort it took for him to shift, and your protective instincts kicked into overdrive.
“What do you want?” you called, focusing on the task at hand. “Chamomile or peppermint?”
“Chamomile, please. It helps me relax,” he replied, his voice warm, and it brought a smile to your lips as you moved with purpose.
You returned to the couch, the steaming cup in one hand and a bowl of hearty chicken soup in the other. “Exactly! But first, we must fortify our defenses with snacks!” you proclaimed, darting back to the kitchen to grab a stash of his favorite treats—cookies, chips, and anything sweet you could find. You returned, proudly holding your treasure trove, and Ken’s eyes lit up with delight.
“Now this is my kind of fort,” he said, chuckling as you nestled back beside him. You shared the snacks, laughter mingling with the gentle sounds of Emi’s playful chirps as she darted around the fort, fully embracing the spirit of adventure.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue across the room, you both settled into a comfortable rhythm. The soft sounds of the base faded into a peaceful silence, and you felt a sense of calm wash over you, the worries of the outside world dissipating in the safe cocoon you had created.

LEE HEESEUNG : picnic in the park
— the late afternoon sun splashes over half the plaid picnic blanket, the other half of the material immersed in the cool shade of a willow tree. taking a bite out of a ripe strawberry from the plate sitting on your lap, you enjoy the soft breeze blowing through your hair. your eyes close as you sit there and savor the warm sunshine on your face as you tilt your head up, filtered through the tree leaves. the distant sound of children’s shrieks and laughter echoes from the main part of the park, a continuous background noise compared to the deserted area you decided to have a picnic in, far from all the bustle. opening your eyes again, you rearrange the platters of food scattered around the picnic blanket. right underneath your gaze, two cups of pink fruit punch sit on the mini cooler, the only sign of company with you on this warm sunny day. you spend a few more moments bathing yourself in the calm aura of the environment when a voice drags you from the haze - “y/n!” it’s heeseung, your boyfriend. a distance away, he walks towards you from behind. the sunshine hits down on his face at the right angles, as bright as his smile. he looks like a dream, submerged in an ethereal ambience that you can’t take your gaze off of. “look what i have for you,” he says with a small giggle when he’s walked close enough to you. as you look up at him, he holds out a bunch of small daisies, hand-picked from the looks of it. “they’re beautiful, heeseung,” you can barely contain the grin from your face as you sit him down beside you on the blanket and plant a kiss of his cheek.

PARK JONGSEONG : home sweet home
— "i'm home!" you call as you shut the door of the apartment behind you. you looked around the space, but the hallway was dark and silence stared back at you. “jay?” you call again as you slip off your jacket and walk into the living room. “in here,” your boyfriend’s familiar voice sounds from the doorway to the dining table and kitchen. there’s a strange catch of excitement in it, a fair amount of contrast from his usual calm demeanor. “why are you—” you start to walk into the doorway, but you’re greeted by a sight of candles... candles, and lots of them. they’re set all around the room, the only source of illumination in the room. a lace tablecloth covers the dining table with dishes of food placed around one big candle in the midst of it all. tears spring to your eyes as your gaze lands on jay standing next to the table, a small but proud smile on his face and a bouquet of roses in his arms. “what is this?” even though your voice breaks and tears threaten to spill over your eyes, a smile appears on your face. “it’s for you,” jay replies as he walks over to you and hands you the bouquet. “really? all this for me?” the tears finally slip down, around your smile so big that jay can’t help but grin too when he sees it. “why are you crying?” jay laughs as he wipes your tears with his fingers. sniffing, you don’t respond and look up at his face, the scrunch between his eyes when he has a grin on. he pulls you towards him with a chuckle, and you stumble into his arms in an embrace.
SIM JAEYUN: amusement park
— "jake, c'mon!" you pulled on your boyfriend's wrist towards the line leading up to the ferris wheel ride. the amusement park was bustling with people, even when the sun was about to set. the bottom of the sun just barely touched the top of the distant horizon, the sky on the verge of turning a orange and pink hue. as you ran towards the back of the long line for the ferris wheel, jake trailed behind you, cotton candy in hand. looking up at the towering wheel, excitement bubbled up in you again. this was the ferris wheel that had went viral online and had been on your bucket list all summer. you'd begged jake to come here with you for a good two weeks before he'd finally agreed. and to be honest, you didn't think he disliked this in any way. as the two of you inched towards the front of the line, he wore a puppy grin on his face as he looked around as excitedly as you were when you pulled him towards the ferris wheel. soon, it was your turn to get on the ride. you scrambled into the ferris wheel cabin with jake just after you. a smile automatically appeared on your face as you slid onto the booth-like seat that extended all around the small space. jake seemed to be equally happy, all the energy seeping out of him as his legs bounced excitedly and the shit-eating grin still there. the cabin slowly moved towards the top, and the timing was perfect - the sky was a beautiful shade of pink, with tinges of orange red. the clouds were outlined with golden. "the sunset's beautiful," you murmured, mesmerized by the view. "it is," jake said as the cabin shifted towards the topmost spot on the wheel. "just like you," he added. you giggled and turned to him. "just like you too," you said before you took hold of his collar and kissed him.
PARK SUNGHOON: the movies
— the large tv screen flickers with every cutting scene, the only light in the dark living room other than the less-than-dim lamp. you and sunghoon are bunched up in blankets on his spacious couch, pillows scattered around and empty bowl of popcorn set on the table. your eyes are only half-trained on the tv - literally. you struggle not to fall asleep there, in your boyfriend's arms, as the movie plays in the background. sunghoon seems to be focused, though; you know it's one of his favorite movies, a cheesy romance one with a cliché trope and a figure skater lead that you know has made him cry at some point at least once. not that you could be talking - you'd watched it long ago, when sunghoon first told you it was his favorite movie, and cried more than once because of it. with a sigh, you shift your figure and bury your face into the crook of sunghoon's neck, sighing. "this movie is actually so good, i could watch it for a million times and not get bored.." he rambled on. "hey, do you want to go anywhere tomorrow? we could go to that restaurant you've been wanting to go to? y/n..?" he whispered as silence hung in the air. looking down, he almost chuckled at the sight of you fast asleep in his arms, the tiniest furrow between your eyebrows. "i'll take that as a yes, pretty girl," he murmured with a smile he pecked your nose.

The university garden was filled with voices, hurried footsteps and distant laughter. I was sitting alone, with the sun streaming through the leaves of the tree above me, and the cell phone resting in my lap as if it weighed three times as much. I had typed the message at least three times and deleted another four.
Emi
What's so hard about inviting him to lunch with me?
But the question came loaded. I knew it.
I took a deep breath, ran a hand through my fringe that the wind wouldn't leave alone, and made up my mind.
Hey… are you free now? I was thinking of going out for breakfast. We could go to that little place in front of the uni… if you want. But it's okay if you already have plans.
[Emi]:
I read it a thousand times before I hit send. I felt my stomach clench as soon as I saw the message sent. I instantly regretted it.
What was that about “if you want to?” Why are you talking like you're a high school girl trying to sound casual? I covered my face with my hand, disguising it behind my bent knees.
Seconds passed. Long ones. Silent. My cell phone didn't vibrate. Nothing.
Maybe it was busy. Maybe I wasn't hungry.
Maybe I just didn't want to.
Until…
[Anton]:
I'm free for just an hour, but I thought I'd go practice with the guys for a bit.
My heart dropped a little bit. Not out of dramatic disappointment. It was more like that little bump when you're waiting for a wave and it doesn't come.
I hurried my response. I didn't want to sound annoyed. Much less needy.
[Emi]:
Oh, don't worry, really. I didn't mean to interrupt or anything. Best of luck with your practice!
I dropped the cell phone on the bench and stared at a couple of dried flowers at my feet. I felt silly. But also a little bit brave for trying.
And just as I was about to put the cell phone in my pocket, the three little dots of “typing…” appeared.
I held my breath.
[Anton]:
Why don't you come with me? Everyone likes you. They won't have a problem if you're there. As long as you don't make any noise, of course….
I stared at the message with a smile that came out on its own, without a filter. Like those that escape before you realize you're happy. I didn't know what excited me more: that he wanted me to go with him or that he told me with that kind of tender awkwardness that made me feel… I don't know. Confident.
I grabbed my backpack, slung my sweater over my arm, and stood up as if something inside me activated. The rest of the day could wait.
I just wanted to be there.
I smiled alone, cell phone still in hand. Something in me ignited. It wasn't a giant flame or a fire, but it was something warm, tiny and beautiful.
I got up without thinking too much about it.
I crossed the entrance of the music building feeling…nervous. Why was I nervous? It wasn't like I was going to do something forbidden. I was just going to watch Anton and the guys rehearse, nothing more. That shouldn't be a big deal, but my heart disagreed.
The rehearsal room smelled of instruments, old cables and cheap coffee. But it also had that vibrant energy of a place where people did what they loved. I entered carefully, as if stepping through the door of a sacred place.
Anton was the first to see me. He smiled at me, calm. Not his typical polite or nervous smile. It was different. Softer. More… sincere.
"You're just in time,” he said with a half-smile. I don't know why, but that simple curve of his lips loosened my muscles. I felt… welcome.
He motioned for me to come in, and pointed to a chair in the corner.
"Come, sit here,” he said, pointing to a corner with a couple of cushions near some amplifiers. I promise we won't blow anything up.
I laughed a little, more relaxed. The atmosphere inside was totally different from the campus: casual, vibrant. Everyone doing their own thing, but all sharing the same rhythm. I settled in the right place, hugging my legs, and before I could observe more, a familiar voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Look who's here!" Shotaro said, grinning from ear to ear, “The girl with the lost breakfast!"
"So because of Anton you missed breakfast time?" Eunseok added with a chuckle.
I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't help but laugh too. His warmth was infectious.
Seunghan greeted me with a friendly wave and Sungchan appeared like a flash with a bottle of water, which he offered me with an exaggerated bow.
"For our first official guest,” he said, as if he were on a variety show.
Sohee sat down next to me and the first thing she did was look at my hair.
"Do you always do your hair like that or did it just happen to look nice today?"
"Hey… Thank you?" I answered, confused.
He let out a mischievous laugh and winked at me. I liked him. Weird, but nice.
And then, I saw it.
He was on the other side of the room, tuning his guitar with a serious gesture, with an absurd concentration. He didn't say a word. He hadn't looked at me once since I walked in. His fingers moved nimbly across the neck, as if the guitar was the only thing that existed. His jaw was tense, his brow was slightly furrowed, his gaze lowered.
Wonbin.
I beg your pardon?
Nothing to do with the boy who hours before had told me “for you, always”. Nothing to do with the one who pinched my cheek like it was his secret.
What the hell is wrong with him now?
I pursed my lips, trying not to stare too hard, but I couldn't help it either. Was he usually like this? Distant? Or was he just being mean? Or… was he purposely avoiding looking at me?
I hated him a little for confusing me.
I stirred in the chair, uncomfortable. My chest tightened with a silly anxiety I didn't understand. The worst part was that I felt his presence even if he wasn't looking at me. I felt his posture, the way he ran his fingers across his neck, the gentle but firm movement of his hands on the strings.
What a weird guy.
To push those thoughts away a bit. I settled better in my chair with my cell phone in my hands, pretending to check messages, even though I had it on airplane mode. Then I opened a document and started to advance some homework, mostly so I wouldn't look like a groupie. But between words, I couldn't help it: every now and then, my eyes would wander to them.
And yet… I couldn't help but notice him.
Anton was the first to capture my attention.
He was sitting, guitar resting on his leg, head slightly bowed as he gently strummed to try out chords. I saw him frown for a second, concentrating, and then that expression melted into a small smirk as he hit on the right tune.
I smiled without thinking about it.
And he saw me. He saw me in the middle of all the noise, between keys and laughter, and smiled back - a more shy, shorter, but sincere smile. He looked down at once, scratching the back of his head as if he was sorry to have been caught.
I loved that gesture.
After a few minutes, they began rehearsing for real. The music filled the room, enveloping, almost hypnotic. Everyone was in their own world, but at the same time synchronized in a way that impressed me.
And Anton… God. Anton played with his eyes closed at times, as if he was talking directly to the strings. As if every note was coming from inside. I had never seen him like that. There was something magnetic about his playing, as if everything else disappeared for him.
“How can someone be so…?” I didn't finish the thought.
I instinctively looked up to the other side of the room.
And I saw him. Again.
Wonbin.
Leaning against the wall, his guitar slung over his body, looking in my direction. This time, it wasn't a casual glance or a general sweep of eyes. He was looking at me. At me. Fixed. Not with a smile or sneer. Just… serious. Intense.
My heart gave me a weird flip.
I swallowed hard and averted my gaze, but seconds later I looked up again, without thinking. He was still there. Staring at me.
Unlike Anton, who had averted his eyes as if in grief, Wonbin held them. He held them as if he was testing me. Reading me. As if he was waiting to see what I would do.
I felt as if something was tugging at my stomach. A small, uncomfortable electricity ran through my chest. I swallowed saliva, lowering my gaze, unable to hold it any longer.
I did nothing. I just looked back at him.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Then he barely raised an eyebrow, as if to say “are you going to keep looking at me or are you going to run away?”
I felt a shiver go down my back. I forced myself to let out the air I didn't know I was holding, and looked back down at my cell phone even though I had no idea what was on the screen anymore.
What was that?
The music continued. Anton's guitar soared above the others for a few seconds. I heard Shotaro shout a “that, Anton!” and everyone laughed, but I didn't laugh. I was still with my cheeks hot and my heart lurching without logical explanation.
I didn't like the way it made me feel.
But... what did he make me feel?
And when I mustered the courage to look at Wonbin again, he was no longer looking at me.
He was smiling with Sungchan, as if nothing had happened.
As if he hadn't completely caught me with just a damn glance.
Minutes later, the rehearsal ended amidst soft applause and congratulations between them. I was still sitting in the same corner, my homework open and completely forgotten. I simply watched as they packed up cables and carefully wrapped their guitars — the kind of care you give to something you love.
Anton was the first to approach.
He sat down next to me like it was the most natural thing in the world. He was a little sweaty, his bangs falling into his eyes, and he brushed them away with his hand as he looked at me.
"Did you get bored?" he asked.
"Was that boring?" I raised an eyebrow, smiling. "I'm more impressed than I thought I'd be."
He chuckled softly, glancing at the floor. Soon, the others gathered around too, forming a chaotic little circle where everyone talked over everyone else.
Even so, I didn’t feel out of place.
"By the way, have you eaten yet?" Anton asked suddenly, turning back to me.
I shook my head.
"I'm not hungry. Besides, it's already pretty late."
He frowned.
"You have to eat, Emi."
"And did you eat?"
He narrowed his eyes, caught.
"Touché." He stood up abruptly. "I'll be right back — I’m taking her to get something to eat before she passes out on us."
"Hey!" I protested, getting up after him. "I'm not going to pass out!"
"We won't know for sure unless you eat."
I laughed quietly under my breath.
We said goodbye to the others while Sohee joked that I better hurry out before collapsing.
Following Anton out of the room, we walked together to the cafeteria, but it was almost empty. There wasn’t much left except a couple of ramen packs and some half-crushed cookies in the display cases.
We grabbed whatever we could, and just as I offered to go get something to drink, I left him sitting at one of the small tables in the back.
But when I came back...
Something was different.
Three guys were standing near Anton. I knew them well — unfortunately — the same bullies who were always hanging around campus. One had his arms crossed, another was tossing a rubber ball between his hands, and the third simply stared at Anton with a mocking smirk.
"Playing with the popular kids now, huh?" one of them said, tilting his head. "How convenient. Is that gonna make you interesting, or just less invisible?"
"Did they let you out of your little cage today?" another one sneered loud enough for everyone to hear.
Anton blinked quickly. He lowered his head, trying to hide behind the shadow of his bangs. His hands trembled slightly, gripping the edge of his plate, knuckles white from the force.
I felt something tear inside my chest — a mix of sadness and rage that pushed me forward.
Anton didn’t say anything.
He just stared down at his food. He leaned on his elbows, pretending not to hear. But his clenched jaw told me he was feeling every word.
Without thinking, I walked over. I slammed the bottles down on the table.
"Aren’t you tired of being this pathetic?" I said, in a voice that didn’t sound like mine.
The entire cafeteria froze for a second.
Even those who had no idea what was happening could feel the tension thick in the air.
The bullies exchanged uneasy glances, like kids caught stealing candy. They shrank back a little, pretending they hadn't heard.
They all turned to me, confused.
"Aw, is your little defender here again? What do you want? We're just talking," one of them said, laughing.
"The only thing I want is to smash a tray into your face if you don't leave."
I smiled sweetly.
They weren’t expecting that. They stayed silent for a few seconds, and seeing a few teachers entering the cafeteria to grab their meals, they decided to walk away, mumbling under their breath but saying nothing else.
Once everything started moving again, I looked at Anton.
He didn’t say anything. He just looked up at me, his eyes shining with a mixture of shame, relief, and something else... gratitude?
He gave me the tiniest, most broken smile, like he had forgotten how to do it.
And without meaning to, a sad little laugh escaped me.
He was trying so hard to be brave.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," he answered in a small voice.
But he wasn’t.

I let out a small, shy laugh.
He didn’t laugh.
But he looked at me.

"Does that happen to you a lot?" I asked softly.
"It used to. Not so much lately... until I started hanging around them and you."
"That's stupid."
"I know."
We stayed in silence for a few seconds.
Then I offered him a cookie, and finally, he smiled a little.
He accepted it, but when our hands brushed, I felt that stupid electric spark run all the way up my spine.
"Thanks for staying today," he said suddenly.
"Thanks for inviting me," I replied.
His eyes dropped to my lips for a split second.
And I swear... I swear the air grew heavier between us.
Nothing happened.
Neither of us moved.
But our hearts did.
Both of them.
A few minutes later, we decided to return to our routines.
We walked together down the hallway in silence — but it was the kind of silence that feels like a shared secret.
Then, we each took a different path to our respective classes.
Just before leaving the building, I heard a voice behind me.
"You should eat better."
I turned around.

He handed me a small sandwich wrapped in a napkin.
He didn’t say anything else, just wore that usual... unreadable expression.
