Manchester United vs Chelsea - Match Preview
Prediction: 2-0 United
Chelsea. What a state they are in. They probably boast the best squad depth aside this season’s champions but find themselves languishing in 12th place in the English Premier League.
Owner Todd Boehly’s intervention-heavy approach feels like something from a Football Manager game, and sees his new play-thing on 43 points with -6 goal difference. Even if Chelsea were to beat United on Thursday and Newcastle on Sunday, they cannot break into the top 10.
For United, they need just 1 point from 6 available to secure top 4 and a Champions League place, and it’s very likely that the tired-but-organised United can produce an underwhelming-but-professional win over a jaded Chelsea side.
Tumblr media
United:
Erik Ten Hag’s season needs a strong finish. Both Chelsea and Fulham have nothing but pride to play for, whereas United do. Incentive helps, and so does a home crowd, but 2 wins and 2 losses in 4 is hardly elite form.
United since the EFL Cup final have been patchy, if not poor. The 7-0 hammering to Liverpool, the 0-0 with 10 men vs Southampton, defeats to Brighton, Newcastle, and West Ham... and Sevilla knocked the club out of the Europa League (though admittedly they have made it to yet another EL final).
As the season’s fatigue has set in on United’s players, so too has a lapse in concentration it seems. Rashford’s scintillating form has tailed off, Casemiro looks off the ball, and Martinez is out til pre-season. To compound this, Martial and Weghorst just aren’t scoring the goals needed from a centre forward.
The team has lacked the goal threat to kill off games. Plenty of draws or defeats could easily have been wins had teams not been given so much time to regroup, refocus, and fight back. Rashford has done well for goals this year and Bruno’s chipped in, but Sancho is the third highest scorer. This is a man who is clearly struggling with something behind the scenes and took 2 months out to rehabilitate. That’s not enough goals from the supporting cast.
That being said, gelling as a team takes time - another issue facing both sides. Next season, with a proper CF or two, plus some other players in, some players out... perhaps we’ll see more of that bite that United teams of old had. It certainly feels like Erik Ten Hag’s United are a more tactically astute team, with a variety of gameplans.
For now, we the fans will take a disciplined win to secure CL qualification. It can be boring, it can be close, but the result is all that matters.
Tumblr media
Chelsea:
Chelsea’s form since the start of April has been woeful. A loss to Villa saw Graham Potter sacked, they drew with Liverpool under an interim coach, and then proceeded to lose 6 on the bounce under the temporarily returning Frank Lampard - a man already dismissed for failing to perform as Chelsea manager. Right...
Lampard will be relieved that a 3-1 away win against Bournemouth helped secure Chelsea’s safety and spare any blushes should a relegation battle have emerged, but 7 losses in 9 games under Lampard demonstrates a) how clear it is that Chelsea lack identity and a team cohesion and b) how poor a choice of manager he was.
Goals have played a big part of Chelsea’s lack of bite. While their star striker is on loan back at Inter and has made the Champions League final, the Blues find themselves struggling to score. 6 goals for May (so far) is the joint-third most they’ve scored in a calendar month. They matched the same in August, 8 in March, and 16 in October. April and February they only managed 1 goal each month respectively, 2 goals in both December and November (impacted by the World Cup and Christmas), and 3 goals in January and September.
Chelsea’s saving grace is that Manchester United are tired, and lacking a true centre forward. They may not like it, but playing for a draw could be the best option. Quiet the crowd, kill the energy and the tempo, and maybe Chelsea can upset United. It’s a big maybe though. Does Frank Lampard have the humility to play safe? Do his players?

Predictios the problem description that against Man City, arguably the best team in Europe right now, you need more than Haaland.
Yes, you need more. Predidtions midfield will be overwhelmed by City's ridiculous movement and synchronicity. Pick: Manchester City preductions, Borussia Dortmund 0. Chiu's take: Borrusia Dortmund are without Jadon Today uefa champions league predictions thigh against a Manchester City that has won 26 of their last 27 matches championns all competitions. It would be silly to bet against Manchester City at this point. Even though Manchester City have not allowed a UCL goal in minutes, I expect them to at least concede because of Erling Haaland, who has scored 20 goals in 14 Champions League games.
It is hard to argue against that stat. Johnson's take: The Germans need an encouraging performance while Pep Guardiola's side is arguably the strongest predictiosn this chmapions in today uefa champions league predictions. I think City will win with Dortmund pushing them closer than most.
Pick: Manchester City 2, Today uefa champions league predictions Dortmund 1. Benge's take: Pep Guardiola's side looks like bringing truth to the cliche that defense wins championships. Not since Matchday 1 have they let in a goal and the Ruben Dias-John Stones tandem might be enough to stop even Erling Haaland, or at least constrict supply tocay to him. Up the other end, you can rest assured that City will score, they ought to have one foot in the semifinal by the time the first leg is done.
Herrera's take: Fixture tonight epl heavyweights will battle it out, today uefa champions league predictions expect a low-scoring draw with Erling Haaland getting the equalizer.
Pick: Manchester City 1, Borussia Dortmund 1. Goodman's take: Erling Haaland may get all the attention and might even be headed for Manchester City next season but it's the City defensive masterclasses that Pep Guardiola consistently orchestrates that will prevail. Bayern Munich were way above the helpful hints last season otday won every game.

Behind Enemy Lines: ROMA!
Tumblr media
Next up in our season preview series comes the hot freshness of ROMA! The trendy, hipster pick to challenge for the Scudetto this year. To dish the dirt on the team from the eternal city we have brought in our man Steve Sciavillo.
Steve ‘has been a Roma fan since the mid-2000s and started writing for Chiesa di Totti (chiesaditotti.com) five seasons ago. Just over a year ago we also started a podcast called "Across the Romaverse" which can be found on all major platforms. I'm also part of a newer podcast called "Kicks & Picks", which looks at the EPL & Serie A through a betting lens. You can follow my work on Twitter at @ssciavilloCDT ‘
On to the Q and A!
How do you like your teams transfer window so far?
Steve:  I'm very happy with Roma's transfer market so far. I think Tiago Pinto has done an excellent job the last two seasons of clearing a lot of bad contracts and unwanted players off of Roma's books, which has made the incoming mercato possible. So far, Roma has only spent €7 million on incoming transfer fees (Zeki Celik from Lille), while bringing in Paulo Dybala, Nemanja Matic, and Mile Svilar on frees and Georginio Wijnaldum on loan. Meanwhile Andrea Belotti is set to arrive any day now on a free. It's been great from a business sense and very strong in terms of upgrading the roster to Jose Mourinho's liking.
What do you expect in the last few weeks of the window?
Steve:  First and foremost, I expect Eldor Shomorudov, Gonzalo Villar, Carles Perez, Justin Kluivert, and Riccardo Calafiori to follow Jordan Veretout out the door. (A couple of them will probably be gone before this is even published.) Once Shomorudov heads to Bologna, then Roma will be able to make Belotti official. After that a fifth center back should arrive to provide more cover along the three man backline. Right now it looks like Eric Bailly on loan from Man United or Dan-Axel Zagadou on a free transfer are the two most likely arrivals. I still think that another CM needs to arrive to really complete the roster unless they plan on playing Pellegrini deeper than his usual trequartista position. I'm still holding out hope that Roma may swoop for Davide Frattesi late. Meanwhile, I don't think they sell Nicolo Zaniolo, but with Tottenham still sniffing around, you wonder how much would be too much to turn down.
What excites you for this season?
Steve:  I mean there's a lot to get excited about for the upcoming season. Roma is coming off its first trophy in over a decade with one of the winningest managers in European history at the helm. The ownership is fully backing him with signings of players like Dybala and Wijnaldum. This to me means the minimum objectives for the season need to be a top 4 finish and return to the Champions League, along with deep runs in the Coppa Italia and Europa League. I think the added depth could allow that to happen, whereas last season the lack of depth hurt Roma in the league table as it went deep into the UECL.
What worries you?
Steve:  For one I worry about the expectations being too high and putting too much pressure on the squad too soon. For good reason there's a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the team, but all of this Scudetto dark horse talk has me a little weary. Roma is a pressure cooker environment, which often weighs on the squad, so I just hope people keep their expectations in check until we see just how good this team is in the first few months. Secondly, on the pitch I worry about the possibility of a player like Dybala or Smalling missing considerable time due to injury given their past histories.
Your top 4 predictions for Serie A.
Steve:  At the moment my top 4 sides are Inter, Milan, Juve, and Roma, but the rest of the transfer market still has to play out.
Anything from the rest of the league that most peaks your interest?
Steve:  A couple other things I'm keeping an eye on are: How much better is Juve than last year with the signings they've made? Can Lukaku bring Inter back to the top? Will Milan be able to repeat last season's feats? Does Atalanta bounce back without European commitments or was last season the beginning of the end of their competitive run? Can Monza push mid-table with the signings they've made?
Well done my friend and thank you for the Roma perspective.
Best of luck this year to all our Roma friends and thanks again Steve!
Cheers!
Lisi

EPL Preview 2022: Bournemouth
Tumblr media
Last Years Finish: 2nd (In the Championship)
Predicted Finish: 20th
Odds To Win The EPL: 1,500-1 via Oddschecker
Prospects:
When the fixture computer coughed up this season’s match schedule, Bournemouth could be forgiven for feeling like they got bent over a barrel and told to spread their cheeks. Runners-up in the Championship last season, there is little time to adapt, with trips to Manchester City and Liverpool in the first month, as well as a home date with Arsenal. They kick-off at the Vitality Stadium against Aston Villa, a repeat of their first Premier League game seven years ago, which ended in a defeat.
This time Bournemouth appears to be banking on players who were regulars upon relegation two years ago, Dominic Solanke, Lewis Cook, and Philip Billing, to come to the forefront. How Solanke will fare is one of the bigger questions of their campaign, given last time he was in the top flight he mustered three goals across 18 trying months after joining from Liverpool for £17m. But the striker, now 24, has scored 44 goals over the past two seasons in the Championship and will be keen to transfer that form to the Premiership. It is easy, especially these days, to get lost in the hysteria of the summer transfer window, particularly given Nottingham Forest’s aggressive recruitment drive, but Bournemouth did a key bit of digging in January, with Kieffer Moore signing from Cardiff to provide another dimension in attack. The arrival of the England Under-21 defender James Hill, tracked by Barcelona while at Fleetwood Town, also fell in line with Bournemouth’s desire to develop youngsters. Transfer Coup: It has hardly been a revolving door of comings and goings, so Joe Rothwell and Ryan Fredericks, both of whom have joined on free transfers, will have to fight it out for this accolade, as unimpressive as that is. Rothwell, who joined Oxford in 2016 after 15 years at boyhood club Manchester United, where he developed in the under-21s alongside Dean Henderson and Scott McTominay, is probably the pick of the pair given his impressive performances for Blackburn last season. But Fredericks, who joins on a free after leaving West Ham, will provide competition for Adam Smith and Jack Stacey at right-back.
The Manager:
Scott Parker has had two cracks at promotion and made successes of both, even if nerves jangled a little last season as some supporters struggled to warm to the former Fulham head coach. Parker is not dissimilar to Eddie Howe in some ways; a student of the game, laser-focused, and demanding of his players. Few can pull off a cream cardigan quite like Parker, but the man is built for these types of roles, taking young teams, securing promotion, and overachieving with a barren cupboard of players. It's just what he does.
Outcome:
Honestly, this one is all on Parker. This team will finish 20th, but it'll be because of Parker's tactics and ability to get the most out of the squad, not because of illustrious performances. Bournemouth can probably count on Solanke for 7-10 goals, but when the focal point of your EPL Preview is the manager? You're in for a long season.
