You’ll find plenty of wood step stools, too, but consider where you’ll use your stool because that can help you decide on a material.  Plastic should be used over solid wood or metal options in humid or wet areas, such as bathrooms or outdoor spaces. However, plastic and coated metal options are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The integrity of the steps is of utmost importance, says Meghan Cocchiaro, founder and lead organizer of Organized by Meg, and a daily user of step stools as she organizes clients’ homes.  “A good household step stool doesn't fold in the middle of the step,” she says. “If it folds at all, the entire structure folds, but not in the middle of the actual step.” Cocchiaro also strongly suggests choosing a step stool with a bar going across the top to grab onto and lean against. Weight Capacity and Safety Any step ladder should be able to hold at least 200 pounds, as the items on our list do. However, the weight capacity listed on a step ladder can be tricky. Although manufacturers like to boast about their product’s weight capacity, it may be inflated, or constant use can weaken the frame over time, causing the stool to collapse under higher weights.  Mike VanBree, the president of the American Ladder Institute, which develops the safety standards for ladders, step ladders, and step stools, says safety is of paramount concern even when it comes to lower step stools. “Like step ladders, step stools have safety protocols that should always be followed, including adhering to warning labels on the manufacturer’s instructions,” says VanBree. VanBree says it’s also important to check a few things before stepping on any step stool or step ladder. “Check that the anti-slip feet at the bottom of the step stool and the side rails of a step ladder are present and in good condition before using them,” he says. “Regular maintenance is essential for keeping the step stool in a safe condition. Frequently check all hardware, fittings, and accessories to ensure they are in proper working order.” Is It Portable? Portability is important if you plan on lugging a step stool into your garage, outdoors, and around your yard, says Jeremy Yamaguchi, the CEO of Cabana Pools. “My company provides pool cleaning and maintenance services, so step stools are always necessary, especially when we need to reach up higher along the side of the pool to drain them,” he says.  Yamaguchi insists on using lightweight step stools that stay dry and have footing wide enough for both feet to maintain balance, as he often also has to reach high for tools in a garage or shed. “The more surface area there is on a step, the flatter your feet will remain, and the more stable you can stand,” he adds. The heaviest step stool on this list is the HBTower Step Ladder, weighing 16 pound, but it is still considered lightweight enough to be easily portable. Single-step stools, such as the Handy Laundry Folding Step Stool at 2 pounds, are exceptionally portable. Compared with a small to medium house ladder of 20 to 30 pounds, moving around a step stool is a breeze. Is the Height Good for Your Needs? Sometimes, you need to clean hard-to-reach spots, which could require a folding multi-step stool or step ladder. However, keep in mind that some folding step ladders are designed in a way that keeps you from getting too close to the area you need to work on.  For example, foldable step ladders like the HBTower Step Ladder have back legs and a brace that fold out, which can become a barrier to reaching the area you want to work on. If you need to reach above a sink, it’s tricky to place the step stool at the right angle to get close enough to your target because the back hits up against the sink. Oftentimes, if you’re handling a simple task, such as hanging a picture on a wall, a single-step stool may suffice. Cocchiero warns never to do the following when using a step stool: “Never place anything on the top step of the stool to boost yourself up higher, such as books or even a smaller one-step step stool,” she says. “Check that all four legs of the step stool are on the same even floor surface and climb down the ladder facing the ladder only.” Why Trust The Spruce?
