Step stools can be one of the most useful tools in your home. They can help you safely reach high shelves or tackle challenging DIY projects, whether you’re changing a bulb or painting a wall, so you don’t have to wrangle with a full-size ladder.  We've tested 23 ladders, including several step stools, and evaluated them based on stability, ease of setup and folding, portability, value, and additional features. Through our research and testing, we determined that the material, weight capacity, and sturdiness of your step stool are the most important factors. These features aren't just handy to have; we found that they impact the overall safety and ease of use of any step stool. Credit: Amazon What We Like Handrails offer extra support Attachable tool bag Foam grip, anti-slip steps, and rubber feet 500-pound weight capacity This ladder from HBTower has three large platforms with a non-slip surface design, providing a solid and secure climb. We put this step stool through its paces in our lab and at home for six months and found that it offered the right height and features for a variety of tasks around the house.  Our first impression of the step stool is how lightweight and simple it is to set up (although closing it does require a bit more effort). Even when we climbed all three steps, it felt sturdy, and the non-slip rubber handgrip provided added stability. The handgrip also serves as a rail to lean on for stability around the upper thigh or hip area (depending on your height) when standing on the top step, which is particularly important if you are working on a project, like hanging wallpaper, that requires reaching high. As for its height, it’s perfect for switching out a light bulb or reaching a higher cabinet in the kitchen. Thanks to the attachable tool bag, we also think it's great for various DIY projects since it can hold screwdrivers and other tools. One thing to keep in mind is that the step stool doesn't fold completely flat due to its rails, so you want to make sure you have a designated spot for storage. Stool Weight: 16 pounds | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Dimensions: 21 x 26.4 x 55.1 inches | Material: Steel Credit: Amazon We like the Handy Laundry stool because of its remarkable versatility and practicality. Weighing in at just two pounds, this stool is not only incredibly lightweight but also affordably priced, making it one of the best little pieces of furniture to have around the house.  The top is covered with anti-slip dots and anti-skid footpads for added stability. We also love the built-in handle at the top, so it’s easier to carry around with one hand while you’re toting cleaning tools in the other hand. Lifting the handle pops open the stool. It folds flat at 2 inches deep for easy storage.  Although the stepping stool lacks a locking mechanism, it is designed to stay open and in place once weight is placed on the step. However, the lack of a lock may be of concern to users. You may need to manually pull it to ensure that it fully opens before stepping on it.  In addition, the step surface may be slightly smaller than the rest of the frame, measuring 8.5 inches deep by 11.25 inches wide. To some, that may seem too small to stand on with both feet.  Stool Weight: 2 pounds | Weight Capacity: 300 pounds | Dimensions: 12.5 x 9.75 x 9 inches | Material: Plastic Credit: Amazon What We Like Oversized paint tray Storage for tools and screws Durable aluminum construction Good size for most everyday tasks The Rubbermaid 3-Step Aluminum Step Stool is the perfect helper for DIY projects. We tested this ladder for six months, and we were continuously impressed with its usability and features. Thanks to this ladder, we can water plants more frequently because it’s less of a hassle to reach them. Hanging curtains and blinds was less of a chore as well. If you're working on a painting project, you'll love the oversized, magnetized tray that can hold a paint can, with holes for paint brushes and other tools, so you don't have to get off the ladder to access them. This came in handy, especially when we were installing outdoor solar lights on the side of a garage. It also has a designated spot to hold screws and a paper towel holder. We found this ladder very easy to open and close, lightweight, and easy to carry around. It was also sturdy and never wobbled, even on the highest step. We started remodeling a room on the second story of our home and have carried it up and down the stairs frequently, using it almost daily. This durable ladder has held up well with no signs of wear and tear. We think it's a great small to medium-sized ladder, especially if you are working on projects around the house, and we look forward to using it for years to come. Stool Weight: 10.5 pounds | Weight Capacity: 250 pounds | Dimensions: 29.7 x 4.72 x 59.84 inches | Material: Aluminum Credit: The Spruce Credit: The Spruce Credit: Amazon You’ve likely spotted the classic round Cramer Kik Step Stool in various settings, such as libraries and retail stores. But what we love most is not just the iconic design, but that the casters lock into place as soon as you step on the stool, providing a safe and secure surface.  The wheels are designed with a retractable spring-mounted system that allows them to roll smoothly but locks down, and the bottom becomes flush with the floor when weight is placed on the step.  You may be surprised to see that these powerful casters are smaller than you anticipated, but you can’t beat their functionality. However, we’d advise using this indoors only, or the casters could become damaged if used outdoors on uneven or rough surfaces. Additionally, since this stool doesn’t fold up, it will occupy more storage space than others on this list.  Stool Weight: 10 pounds | Weight Capacity: 350 pounds | Dimensions: 16 x 14.5 inches | Material: Steel with non-slip powder coating Credit: Amazon What We Like Multipurpose furniture Small footprint Easy to clean This chair and step stool combination from Cosco is beloved for its nostalgic look and built-in step stool that slides out on plastic glides and then tucks back when not in use. The stool can also serve as a footrest while you are seated. It features anti-slip molded step treads and a second “stop” bar at the bottom of the legs that prevents the stool from sliding out of the chair. The seat is 24 inches up from the floor, which is slightly higher than a typical dining room, which makes this work best at the counter rather than a dining table. However, small children may appreciate this seat at the dining table to give them a boost up.  The step stool should glide in and out easily from under the chair, but at times the glides are a little rough. A gentle touch is needed to prevent the step stool from popping out of the glide. The platforms are also on the small side (9.25 inches long), and you may not be able to fully fit two feet on one step. Stool Weight: 16.5 pounds | Weight Capacity: 225 pounds | Dimensions: 16 inches deep x 16 inches wide x 35.25 inches tall | Material: Vinyl seat and back with a steel frame and plastic glide Credit: Amazon What We Like Non-slip platform Slip-resistant bottom Strong and durable This RayLove stool is another handy helper around the house, offering both style and functionality for quick step-ups where needed. The non-skid rubber surface is ample in size to comfortably accommodate two feet on the step.  It weighs just over 3 pounds, making it easy to carry for use around the house and outdoors. All the slats and side cutouts make it easy to grab the stool and take it where needed. The slats on top of the step stool are designed to drain water if the stool is used outdoors; however, it should probably not be left outside in inclement weather. You may be surprised to see that this stool is made of engineered wood, not solid wood. However, this can be a benefit for use in humid or moist spaces, such as bathrooms, because engineered wood can withstand moisture better than solid wood.  However, remember that engineered wood is not waterproof, so it should not be submerged in water or used in the shower. Also, watch for the corners that may be sharper than expected. Stool Weight: 3.25 pounds | Weight Capacity: 450 pounds | Dimensions: 15.75 x 12.5 x 5.25 inches | Material: Engineered wood with rubberized platform Final Verdict Our pick for the best overall planter is the HBTower Step Ladder, which offers high reach with stability and ease, featuring an easy-grip handrail to help keep you steady and safe. We also love the Handy Laundry Folding Step Stool, a well-priced, durable, and stable single-step option that’s easy to tote around and set up, making it our pick for the best budget step stool. How We Picked the Step Stools We’ve reviewed hundreds of step stools over the past few years and also tested a few in our lab and at home. We assessed the following important attributes for each step stool: What features stand out about each product and would be appealing to the buyer (such as the size of the step surface and ease of storage), and what trade-offs might you make in choosing one product over another. What to Look For in a Step Stool Lightweight and Durable Materials Modern step stools are typically made with lightweight metal or plastic materials for portability and durability. You’ll find plenty of wood step stools, too, but consider where you’ll use your stool because that can help you decide on a material.  Plastic should be used over solid wood or metal options in humid or wet areas, such as bathrooms or outdoor spaces. However, plastic and coated metal options are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The integrity of the steps is of utmost importance, says Meghan Cocchiaro, founder and lead organizer of Organized by Meg, and a daily user of step stools as she organizes clients’ homes.  “A good household step stool doesn't fold in the middle of the step,” she says. “If it folds at all, the entire structure folds, but not in the middle of the actual step.” Cocchiaro also strongly suggests choosing a step stool with a bar going across the top to grab onto and lean against. Weight Capacity and Safety Any step ladder should be able to hold at least 200 pounds, as the items on our list do. However, the weight capacity listed on a step ladder can be tricky. Although manufacturers like to boast about their product’s weight capacity, it may be inflated, or constant use can weaken the frame over time, causing the stool to collapse under higher weights.  Mike VanBree, the president of the American Ladder Institute, which develops the safety standards for ladders, step ladders, and step stools, says safety is of paramount concern even when it comes to lower step stools. “Like step ladders, step stools have safety protocols that should always be followed, including adhering to warning labels on the manufacturer’s instructions,” says VanBree. VanBree says it’s also important to check a few things before stepping on any step stool or step ladder. “Check that the anti-slip feet at the bottom of the step stool and the side rails of a step ladder are present and in good condition before using them,” he says. “Regular maintenance is essential for keeping the step stool in a safe condition. Frequently check all hardware, fittings, and accessories to ensure they are in proper working order.” Is It Portable? Portability is important if you plan on lugging a step stool into your garage, outdoors, and around your yard, says Jeremy Yamaguchi, the CEO of Cabana Pools. “My company provides pool cleaning and maintenance services, so step stools are always necessary, especially when we need to reach up higher along the side of the pool to drain them,” he says.  Yamaguchi insists on using lightweight step stools that stay dry and have footing wide enough for both feet to maintain balance, as he often also has to reach high for tools in a garage or shed. “The more surface area there is on a step, the flatter your feet will remain, and the more stable you can stand,” he adds. The heaviest step stool on this list is the HBTower Step Ladder, weighing 16 pound, but it is still considered lightweight enough to be easily portable. Single-step stools, such as the Handy Laundry Folding Step Stool at 2 pounds, are exceptionally portable. Compared with a small to medium house ladder of 20 to 30 pounds, moving around a step stool is a breeze. Is the Height Good for Your Needs? Sometimes, you need to clean hard-to-reach spots, which could require a folding multi-step stool or step ladder. However, keep in mind that some folding step ladders are designed in a way that keeps you from getting too close to the area you need to work on.  For example, foldable step ladders like the HBTower Step Ladder have back legs and a brace that fold out, which can become a barrier to reaching the area you want to work on. If you need to reach above a sink, it’s tricky to place the step stool at the right angle to get close enough to your target because the back hits up against the sink. Oftentimes, if you’re handling a simple task, such as hanging a picture on a wall, a single-step stool may suffice. Cocchiero warns never to do the following when using a step stool: “Never place anything on the top step of the stool to boost yourself up higher, such as books or even a smaller one-step step stool,” she says. “Check that all four legs of the step stool are on the same even floor surface and climb down the ladder facing the ladder only.” Why Trust The Spruce?
