Tumblr media
nyx sat on the edge of her bed, scrolling through instagram on her phone.  her thumb hovered over a post from wwe’s official account, featuring jey uso cutting a promo backstage at tonight’s show. but what caught her attention wasn’t just how fine he looks—it was the sparkling, silver "YEET" chain resting against his inked chest, gleaming under the fluorescent lights of the promo setup.
her chain.
the one she’d nervously gifted to him at Fanatics Fest weeks ago, after waiting in line with a pounding heart and a stomach full of butterflies. he had grinned from ear to ear when she handed it to him, thanking her with so much warmth that her knees nearly buckled. now, seeing it on him as he spoke into the camera, shouting her out by calling her his “homegirl” paired with a sleek black Nike tracksuit that clung to his broad chest, had her swooning.
her phone pinged in her hand, snapping her out of her thoughts. as if she wasn’t already on cloud nine, it was a message request from none other than jey. her breath hitched as she opened it.
@uceyjucey: yo, mama, I had to find you after you blessed me with this chain. lookin’ fresh, huh? *sends attachment*
attached was a photo of him in the chain, smirking at the camera, lips slightly parted in a way that made nyx’s thighs clench together.
she blinked, rereading the message several times, before typing back with trembling fingers.
@nyx.xoxo: you’re welcome 🥹 It looks amazing on you, just like I thought it would.
he replied almost immediately, the three typing dots appearing before she could even close the app.
@uceyjucey: that’s ‘cause you got good taste, ma. you from the big apple?
@nyx.xoxo: born and raised!
@uceyjucey: that’s wassup. we in your city tonight. lemme thank you properly.
her heart raced as she read his words, the casual yet suggestive tone making her head spin. was he flirting with her?  she couldn’t tell, but before she could overthink it, he sent another message.
@uceyjucey: pull up to the hilton on 34th. i’ll pour us somethin’ bubbly.
the click of nyx’s heels echoed down the quiet hallway of the hilton as she approached jey’s door. her reflection caught in a mirror on the wall, and she quickly adjusted her dress, a form-fitting black number that hugged her curves in all the right places. her curls were styled to perfection, framing her beautiful face. she clutched her purse tightly, nerves bubbling under her skin.
when she knocked, the door opened a few moments later. jey stood there, leaning against the frame like a damn vision. the tracksuit was gone, replaced by a white tank that stretched across his chest  revealing the tribal ink that decorated his arms and chest, and a pair of gray sweatpants that sat low on his hips. his chain still hung proudly around his neck, and he wore a boyish grin that made her stomach flip.
“damn,” he said, his voice low and teasing as he let his eyes wander over her.  “you clean up nice, baby girl.” he mused.
nyx could feel her cheeks heating up as she stepped inside. his suite was spacious but cozy, which put her nerves at ease.
she moved towards him, every step feeling heavier as his presence filled the room.  when she was close enough, his hands found her waist, pulling her in gently but firmly. he smelled so damn good—a mix of sandalwood with a hint of amber.
“you nervous?” he asked, his lips curving into that devastating grin that made her stomach flip.
nyx bit her lip, nodding slightly.  “a little.”
jey chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest.  “ain’t no need for that, mama.  I got you.”
his hands slid down to her hips, his thumbs brushing the curve of her ass as he pulled her closer.  “you want some champagne first? or we gon’ skip straight to what we both know we here for?”
the heat in his eyes made her thighs clench, but she managed to smirk.  “you offering me a drink to calm my nerves or to get me tipsy?”
jey tilted his head, his grin widening.  “maybe a lil’ of both.”
he guided her toward the small table by the window, where a bottle of champagne rested in a bucket of ice, two flutes sitting beside it.  nyx perched on the edge of the chair as jey popped the bottle with practiced ease, pouring the golden liquid with a smooth confidence that had her transfixed.
he handed her a glass, their fingers brushing as she took it.  “to you,” he said, raising his glass.  “for that fire ass chain—and for comin’ all this way to see me.”
nyx’s cheeks warmed as they clinked glasses, the bubbles tickling her nose as she sipped.  the champagne was crisp, and after a few sips, a soft warmth began spreading through her body, taking the edge off her nerves.
jey leaned back against the table, his eyes never leaving her.  “you know I been thinkin’ about you since that convention, right?”
she looked up at him, surprised.  “really?”
“hell yeah,” he said, setting his glass down and crossing his arms, the motion making his biceps strain against the fabric of his tee.  “ain’t every day somebody does somethin’ like that for me.  and then to see how fine you looked in person?  shit.  you had me hooked.”
nyx bit her lip, her heart racing.  “I didn’t think you’d even remember me honestly.”
jey laughed, stepping closer until he was towering over her.  “how could I forget you, mama?” He tilted her chin up with a finger, his gaze locking with hers.  “you been on my mind nonstop.”
the air between them thickened, the champagne coursing through her veins making everything feel a little lighter, a little hazier.  jey leaned down, his lips brushing hers in a kiss that was soft but deliberate, testing the waters.  when she kissed him back, he deepened it, his tongue sliding against hers in a slow, deliberate rhythm that made her toes curl.
“I knew you would taste sweet,” he murmured against her lips, his hands sliding down to grip her thighs, pulling her up out of the chair and against him.
nyx gasped as her body pressed flush to his, the hardness of his arousal pressing into her stomach.  jey grinned, nipping at her bottom lip.  “you feel it, don’t you?”
she nodded, her breath coming in shallow gasps as his hands roamed her curves, sliding up her back to unzip her dress.  The fabric pooled at her feet, leaving her in just her lace bra and panties.
“damn, baby girl,” he murmured, his voice husky as he pressed a kiss to her jaw, trailing it slowly down her neck.  “you’re somethin’ else.  you know that?”
nyx bit her lip, her heart fluttering at the way he looked at her—like she was the only thing in the world worth his attention.  “you’re just saying that,” she said softly, though the warmth in her chest betrayed her.
jey pulled back just enough to meet her eyes, his expression softening as his thumb brushed across her cheek.  “nah,” he said, his tone firm.  “ain’t nothin’ about this fake, honey.  you’re gorgeous.  all of you.”
her cheeks burned under his gaze, but before she could respond, jey dipped his head again, his lips brushing hers in a kiss so tender it made her ache.  he laid her down on the plush bed, his hands slipped beneath her lace bra, palming her full breasts with a reverence that sent heat pooling between her thighs. when his thumbs brushed her sensitive nipples, she gasped, arching into his touch.
“sensitive, huh?” he teased, his grin widening as he undid her bra, tossing it aside. his lips found her breasts next, kissing and nipping his way across her soft brown skin before taking a nipple into his mouth.  the wet warmth of his tongue combined with the gentle scrape of his teeth had her squirming beneath him, her fingers tangling in his hair.
“jey,” she breathed, her voice barely more than a whimper.
he hummed in response, his free hand trailing down her stomach, over the curve of her hips, before slipping beneath the waistband of her panties. when his fingers found her, he groaned low in his throat, his eyes darkening as he felt how wet she was for him.
“shit, ma,” he muttered, his voice thick with desire.  “you’re so fuckin’ wet.”
nyx’s face burned at his words, but the embarrassment quickly melted into pleasure as he began to stroke her, his fingers sliding through her slick folds with practiced ease. his thumb brushed her clit in slow, deliberate circles, and she moaned, her hips bucking against his hand.
“that’s it, baby girl,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her ear as he worked her. “lemme hear you. don’t hold back on me.”
she didn’t. the sounds spilling from her lips were shameless, each one spurring jey on as he explored her body with the kind of focus that left her trembling. when he slipped a finger inside her, curling it just right, she cried out, her nails digging into his shoulders.
“fuck, jey,” she gasped, her chest heaving as he added a second finger, stretching her in a way that made her toes curl.
“you’re so tight,” he murmured, his voice filled with awe.  “you’re gonna feel so good wrapped around me, baby.  can’t fuckin’ wait.”
the promise in his words sent her over the edge. her body tensed, her thighs trembling as her orgasm crashed over her, a broken moan tearing from her throat as she spewed a few broken curse words. jey didn’t stop, his fingers coaxing her through the aftershocks until she was panting, her body limp in his hold.
“good girl,” he said softly, pressing a kiss to her temple.  “you’re so fuckin’ perfect.”
before she could catch her breath, jey slid down her body, kissing his way across her stomach until he was settled between her thighs. he hooked his arms around her legs, holding her open as he stared down at her with a hunger that made her shiver.
“jey…” she started, her voice shaky.
he looked up at her, his grin both wicked and reassuring.  “relax, baby.  daddy just wants a taste.”
and then his mouth was on her.
nyx’s head fell back against the pillows, her hands fisting in the sheets as jey worked her pussy with his tongue.  he was slow and deliberate, his lips and tongue exploring every inch of her, teasing her clit with featherlight flicks before sucking it gently into his mouth.
“oh my god,” she moaned, her thighs shaking as he pushed her closer to the edge once again.
jey groaned against her, the vibration sending a fresh wave of pleasure through her.  “you taste so fuckin’ good, baby,” he muttered, his voice muffled.  “could eat this pussy all night.”
his fingers joined his mouth, sliding back inside her as he continued to devour her, and it wasn’t long before she was crying out his name again, her body trembling as another orgasm ripped through her.
“j-jey, I c-can’t—” she started tapping his shoulder, her voice breaking as he kept going, his mouth and fingers relentless.
“yes, you can,” he murmured, his voice firm but soothing.  “one more, baby girl.  give me one more.”
she didn’t think she had it in her, but jey didn’t give her a choice. his thumb brushed her clit as he pressed his tongue against her tight hole, the combination sent her over the edge once more, her body shaking as she gushed into his mouth.
when she finally opened her eyes, jey was hovering over her again, his lips glistening as he grinned down at her.
“you okay, pretty girl?” he asked, his voice soft.
nyx nodded, her chest still heaving as she reached up to pull him down for a kiss.  “I’m okay,” she murmured against his lips.
jey chuckled, his hands trailing down her sides.  “good. ‘cause I ain’t done yet.”
nyx’s shaking thighs clenched at his words, her breath catching as jey’s large, rough hands gripped her thighs, spreading her open again beneath him.
jey leaned back just enough to peel off his shirt, tossing it carelessly onto the floor. her eyes roamed his torso, taking in every curve of muscle and tribal art that painted his skin. he looked down at her with a lazy, almost predatory grin, his confidence radiating from every inch of him.
“see somethin’ you like, baby girl?” he teased, his hands sliding down to hook his thumbs into the waistband of his sweats.
nyx nodded, her voice temporarily failing her.  the sight of him, combined with the lingering sensitivity of her body, left her feeling shy but burning with anticipation.
jey stepped out of his sweats, his dick hard and heavy slapping lightly against his stomach, the sheer size of him making her stomach flip. he stroked himself slowly, his eyes never leaving hers as he settled back onto the bed between her thighs.
“don’t look so scared, mama,” he murmured, his voice low and teasing.  “you handled me just fine earlier. you can do it again.”
nyx bit her lip, a nervous laugh escaping her.  “you’re so sure of yourself,” she muttered, though the warmth in her tone betrayed her.
“and you love it,” Jey shot back, leaning down to kiss her again. his hand trailed up her thigh. “now relax for me.  I’m gonna take my time with you.”
he lined himself up, the thick head of his length brushing against her entrance. nyx gasped, eyes rolling to the back of her head,  her hands gripping his forearms as he pushed into her slowly, stretching her inch by inch.
“shit, baby,” he groaned, his jaw clenching as he sank deeper.  “you feel so fuckin’ good. your pussy is so damn tight.”
nyx whimpered beneath him, her body trembling as he filled her completely.  the stretch was intense, but the way he kissed her, his lips soft and reassuring against hers, made it easier to take.
“you good?” he asked, his voice gentle as he stilled, giving her time to adjust.
she nodded, her nails digging into his shoulders.  “yeah,” she whispered.  “feels so good…”
his grin returned, his confidence flaring as he pulled back slightly before sinking into her again, his movements slow and deliberate.  “that’s my girl,” he murmured.  “take me in baby.”
he started to move, his thrusts deep and steady, each one sending sparks of pleasure shooting through her. nyx’s head fell back against the pillows, her moans filling the room as jey set a rhythm that had her toes curling.
“fuck, you’re perfect,” he muttered, his hands gripping her hips as he began to pick up the pace.  “this pussy was made for me, baby.  you hear me?”
“yes, daddy” nyx gasped, her fingers tangling in his hair as he buried his face in her neck, sucking and biting at her skin. the mix of pain and pleasure made her head spin, her body arching into him as he fucked into her deeper, pressing against all the spots that made her see stars.
“you’re mine tonight, mama,” he growled, his voice thick with possession.  “ain’t nobody else gonna make you feel like this.”
he shifted her legs, hooking one over his shoulder to get even deeper, and the new angle had nyx crying out, her nails raking down his back.
“that’s it, baby girl,” jey groaned, his hand sliding up her body to wrap around her throat. he applied just enough pressure to make her head spin, his thumb brushing her jaw as his eyes locked onto hers.  “you look so fuckin’ pretty like this.”
nyx whimpered, her body trembling beneath him as she teetered on the edge of another orgasm.  “jey, daddy I’m gonna—”
“do it,” he urged, his voice low and commanding.  “cum for me, baby.  show daddy how good I make you feel.”
his words pushed her over the edge, her body clenching around him as she gushed around him once again, leaving her trembling and breathless.
but jey wasn’t done. he grabbed her hips, flipping her onto her stomach before pulling her onto all fours.  “we’re not done yet, baby girl,” he said, his voice dripping with hunger as he lined himself up again.
the first thrust had her crying out, her body still sensitive from her climax. jey groaned, his hands gripping her waist as he fucked her harder now, the sound of skin on skin filling the room.
“look at you,” he muttered, his hand coming down on her ass with a sharp smack that made her gasp.  “takin’ me so good, baby girl.”
nyx buried her face in the pillows, her moans muffled as jey drove her closer to the edge once again. his thumb slid down, teasing her puckered hole, and when he pressed it in just slightly, the sensation alone made her cum once again.
“shit, baby,” Jey groaned, his thrusts becoming erratic as he chased his own release.  “that’s it, that’s my good girl, give me that shit.”
when he finally came, it was with a low, guttural groan, his hips stuttering as he spilled his load into her.  he stayed there for a moment, both of them catching their breath before he pulled out carefully, rolling onto his back and pulling her into his arms.
nyx plopped her head on his chest, her body still trembling as she listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.  jey kissed the top of her head, his fingers tracing lazy circles on her back.
“you good, baby girl?” he asked softly.
she nodded, a small smile playing on her lips.  “yeah. that was fun.”
“good,” he said, his voice filled with warmth.  “’cause you’re stayin’ right here with me tonight.”
and with that, nyx let herself relax completely. boy does she have a story to tell her friends soon.

Par for the Heart: Part 2
paige x azzi
a/n: Hi guys part one got a lot more love than I had anticipated so thank you all for that! Hope this chapter doesn’t disappoint as always feed back is welcome and my anon box is always open come say hi!
word count: 7.4k
“Sunset to Sunrise”
Paige stared at her phone longer than she cared to admit.
It wasn’t like she didn’t want to text Azzi. She did—too much, probably. Ever since their first date, that flirty, unexpected evening that had ended with a goodbye she could still feel on her lips, Paige had been replaying bits and pieces like her brain was binge-watching a highlight reel.
Azzi had been… magnetic. Confident, charming, and disarmingly kind. Paige wasn’t used to that kind of attention without a catch. But Azzi hadn’t asked for anything. Just offered space and a smile—and then let Paige walk away without pressure.
That’s what made this text harder. Because this time, it was Paige reaching back. No bet. No teasing setup. Just… wanting more.
She exhaled slowly and typed:
Paige ⛳️
So… about that bet. When’s round two happening?
Immediately, the three bouncing dots popped up.
Azzi 🏀
👀 Paige Bueckers texting me first? Is this the part where I faint dramatically or just start bragging to my group chat?
Paige smirked despite herself.
Paige ⛳️
Calm down. It’s not that big of a deal.
Azzi 🏀
Oh, it is. But don’t worry, I’ll keep it between us. So what’s the plan, golf goddess? You asking me out or just trying to ruin my free time with your charmingly intimidating aura again? 😌
Paige rolled her eyes, thumbs already flying.
Paige ⛳️
I was thinking dinner. Just… us. No tournaments, no wagers, no golf carts.
Azzi 🏀
You’re serious? Like a real second date initiated by you?
Paige ⛳️
Don’t make it weird.
Azzi 🏀
Too late. I’m already picking out an outfit and telling my mom I found someone who texts first.
Paige ⛳️
Tell her she raised a menace.
Azzi 🏀
Tell yourself you’re lucky to have a second date with one.
Paige ⛳️
Friday?
Azzi 🏀
I’ll be there. Just don’t expect me to go easy on you this time.
Paige ⛳️
Now why would I want that?
She hit send, then locked her phone before she could second-guess it. There was something electric about being the one to reach out—terrifying, yes, but also… empowering.
Maybe this was what easing into something real felt like.
—-
The rhythmic echo of basketballs against the court filled the gym, sneakers squeaking in chaotic harmony. Azzi wiped sweat from her brow as she jogged to the sideline, grabbing her water bottle and phone during the short break Coach had called.
She took a swig, then tapped her screen—muscle memory bringing her right to Paige’s thread.
Paige ⛳️
Thinking I’ll pick you up Friday. Give you the full VIP treatment. Hope you’re not allergic to being wooed 😉
Azzi didn’t realize she was smirking until she felt a ball nudge against her foot.
“Uh oh,” came a voice dripping in amusement. “You’re smilin’ at your phone like someone just told you you made it to the WNBA All-Star game and Beyoncé followed you on IG.”
Azzi looked up to find Ice, her teammate and resident chaos-stirrer, grinning as she dribbled lazily in place.
Azzi rolled her eyes and tried—poorly—to act casual. “It’s nothing.”
Ice cocked her head, catching the glow still clinging to Azzi’s face. “Nah. That ain’t a ‘nothing’ smile. That’s a someone smile.”
Azzi chuckled, locking her phone and tossing it into her gym bag. “You’re in my business.”
“I live in it,” Ice shot back, taking a seat beside her. “Come on, spill. Is this that golf girl?”
Azzi gave her a side glance. “Paige. Yes.”
Ice’s eyebrows arched. “Damn, Paige got you out here cheesin’ in the middle of practice?”
“She said she’s picking me up Friday.” Azzi tried to sound nonchalant but failed. Miserably.
“Ohhh, she’s putting in effort-effort.” Ice fanned herself dramatically. “Okay, lil miss ‘I don’t catch feelings.’”
Azzi leaned back on her elbows, letting the gym lights blur above her. “She’s different, Ice. Real different.”
“Different how?”
Azzi smiled, small but genuine. “She doesn’t need me to be impressed. She just… sees me.”
Ice nodded slowly, her teasing settling into something more thoughtful. “You sure you’re ready for that?”
Azzi didn’t answer right away. She glanced down at her phone again.
“Yeah,” she said softly. “I think I am.”
Ice gave her a gentle nudge with her shoulder. “Then you better show up Friday like it’s game day.”
Azzi grinned. “Already planning my outfit.”
“Girl, just wear your jersey. That’s what I fall for.”
Azzi laughed, tossing her towel at Ice as Coach blew the whistle. “You’re hopeless.”
Ice winked. “And you’re whipped. Let’s go, lovebird.”
They jogged back onto the court, but Azzi couldn’t stop the bounce in her step. Two more days.
—-
Paige pulled up to Azzi’s place just as golden hour kissed the front steps, her Porsche 911 gleaming like it was posing for a magazine cover. She killed the engine, slid her sunglasses up into her hair, and took a slow breath—calm, cool, collected, as always. But something in her chest thrummed just a little faster than usual.
Walking up to the front door, she knocked once—measured, confident—then stepped back, fingers sliding into her pockets.
The door opened, and there was Azzi—leaning in the frame like it owed her money. A cropped black tank hugged her toned frame, high-waisted ripped jeans clinging in all the right places. Her curls were loose, skin glowing, and that smirk? Dangerous.
“Well, well,” Azzi said, giving Paige a once-over that was anything but subtle. “Pullin’ out the Porsche and knocking on my door like you’re trying to seduce me or something.”
Paige arched a brow, lips twitching. “Trying?”
Azzi let out a soft laugh, stepping out onto the porch, her eyes locked on Paige’s. “You’re doing a lot. I mean, I haven’t even gotten in the car yet, and I’m already wondering if I should be nervous.”
Paige opened the passenger door for her, tilting her head. “Maybe just a little.”
Azzi paused, leaning in closer as she passed her. Her voice dropped just enough to leave a trail of goosebumps. “Tell me this isn’t your normal pick-up routine.”
Paige smirked, holding her gaze. “What makes you think it is?”
Azzi slid into the seat, slow and deliberate. “Just figuring out how special I should be feeling right now.”
Paige closed the door behind her, circling around to the driver’s side with the faintest, cocky smile tugging at her lips.
Once inside, she started the engine, eyes on the road but voice smooth as silk. “Why don’t you decide by the end of the night?”
Azzi turned toward her, chin resting in her hand as she studied her profile. “Oh, I’m already forming an opinion.”
The Porsche purred down the street, and the air between them crackled—teasing, electric, full of unspoken promises.
—-
The drive was smooth, the kind that made time feel like a suggestion. Music low, conversation easy, teasing glances traded back and forth like inside jokes waiting to be born. Paige didn’t say where they were going—just shot Azzi a side-smirk every time she asked.
After about twenty minutes, the Porsche pulled off the main road and onto a private, gated path that led them toward the beach. The sound of waves grew louder, salt in the air thicker, and Azzi raised an intrigued brow.
“Okay, this isn’t a restaurant,” she said, twisting in her seat as they coasted down a gravel path flanked by dunes and sea grass.
“Nope,” Paige said simply, shifting into park and stepping out of the car.
Azzi followed, and the second her feet hit sand, her jaw loosened slightly. Down the short hill, nestled between two dunes, was a picture-perfect picnic set up—blanket, pillows, lanterns glowing soft amber, and a low table topped with silver-domed trays. A private bonfire pit stood just a few feet away, wood already stacked and waiting.
Azzi let out a low whistle. “Damn. You planned this?”
“I outsourced the aesthetic,” Paige admitted as they made their way down, “but the idea was mine. I figured it’d be quieter than a place with menus and strangers.”
Azzi looked over at her, one brow raised high. “Quiet’s one word for it. Romantic’s another.”
Paige shrugged, but her eyes held steady. “You make me want to try.”
Azzi’s smirk faltered for just a second. Something warmer slid into her gaze. She looked back out at the ocean, then at the setup like she was trying to clock whether this was real.
“I’m not gonna lie,” she said, as they sat down on the blanket, “you’re setting the bar stupidly high. Like, next time I’m gonna have to fly you to Paris or something just to compete.”
Paige grinned, leaning back on her palms. “Good. I like competition.”
Dinner was quiet at first—shared bites, a few laughs, feet brushing beneath the table like it might be on accident. But neither pulled away. By the time the sun kissed the water, Paige had lit the bonfire, its flicker catching the curve of Azzi’s smile as she let her gaze linger on Paige for few moments too long.
The breeze cooled as the sun dipped below the horizon, and Azzi tugged the blanket around her shoulders with a little dramatic shiver.
“Is this part of the plan too?” she asked. “Getting me cold so you have an excuse to huddle up?”
“I don’t need an excuse,” Paige said, tossing the other half of the blanket around them both.
They sat shoulder to shoulder, fire crackling beside them, the hush of the waves wrapping around their quiet.
After a few beats, Azzi looked over. “You always this smooth, Paige?”
Paige didn’t answer right away. She glanced out at the water, then back at Azzi with something softer behind her eyes. “Only when I care about the outcome.”
Azzi’s smile faded into something more serious. “That’s a dangerous line.”
“I know,” Paige said.
But neither moved away.
—-
The waves rolled in, steady and rhythmic, the kind of soundtrack that made it easier to say things you’d normally keep close. The fire cracked beside them, casting golden light across their faces. Paige sipped the last of her wine, her fingers still brushing lightly against Azzi’s beneath the shared blanket.
Azzi leaned back on her elbow, eyes trained on the ocean but her voice turned inward. “You wanna know something kinda reckless?”
Paige tilted her head, intrigued. “Always.”
“That day at the golf tournament…” Azzi paused, her tongue running along the inside of her cheek like she was chewing on whether to say it. “I didn’t even know I was gonna go until that morning. It was on my calendar, sure, but I was in a mood. Woke up grumpy, sore from practice, totally ready to flake.”
“And yet there you were,” Paige murmured.
Azzi smiled. “Yep. There I was. And then you walked up to the practice putting green like you owned the whole course. All quiet power, like—” She huffed a soft laugh. “Like you didn’t even care if anyone noticed, but you knew we were gonna anyway.”
Paige’s lips tugged up, that reserved smile of hers making another appearance. “I remember you watching.”
“Oh, I was watching,” Azzi said, shifting so she could face her more directly. “You had this aura. I couldn’t not approach you. It wasn’t confidence—I mean, okay, yeah, I’m confident—but it was instinct. Something in me said go.”
“And you trusted it?” Paige asked, her voice soft but earnest now.
Azzi nodded. “Yeah. That’s the part that was reckless. I didn’t know if it would work out. I didn’t even think that far ahead. I just saw you, and I wanted to know what made you tick.”
Paige was quiet for a second, her gaze lowering. “Most people don’t stick around long enough to figure that out.”
Azzi tilted her head. “Why not?”
Paige hesitated. The firelight flickered in her eyes as she let the words come slowly. “People have a habit of seeing what they want in me. Not who I actually am. When I don’t meet the version they created, they… leave. Or worse, try to mold me.”
Azzi let that settle. Then, carefully, she reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Paige’s ear. “I didn’t approach you to change you, Paige. I liked what I saw. Still do.”
Paige met her gaze, something vulnerable lingering in her expression. “Even if I’m not always easy to read?”
Azzi grinned. “I’m good at puzzles. And I’ve got time.”
They sat like that for a moment longer, the silence thick but not heavy—more like a pause to appreciate the weight of something real beginning to form.
Finally, Azzi nudged her shoulder gently. “Besides, you picked me up in a Porsche and brought me to a private beach for a sunset dinner. I’d say you’re the one who’s got me figured out.”
Paige chuckled low, but her eyes stayed on Azzi, warmer now. “Maybe I’m just good at instincts too.”
“Look at us,” Azzi said, bumping her knee against Paige’s under the blanket. “Two athletes, trusting our guts.”
“And hoping we don’t crash the play,” Paige added with a wry smile.
Azzi leaned in just a touch. “Feels like we’re already winning.”
The fire crackled beside them, casting long shadows across the sand. The ocean murmured steadily in the background, and for a moment, it felt like the world had gotten quieter, smaller—just the two of them in this little bubble of flickering light and crashing waves.
Azzi leaned back again, hands tucked behind her in the sand, her knee still grazing Paige’s under the shared blanket. She glanced sideways. “You’ve got that look.”
“What look?” Paige asked, her voice barely above the breeze.
“That quiet one. Like you’re thinking about saying something but you’re not sure if you should.”
Paige didn’t respond right away. Her gaze had drifted back to the ocean, but her fingers were playing absentmindedly with a frayed edge of the blanket between them.
“I used to think being mysterious made me stronger,” she said finally, voice soft but steady. “The less people knew, the less they could hurt.”
Azzi turned to fully face her, sensing the shift.
“But I think…” Paige continued, glancing down at her hands, then back up at Azzi, “it just made me lonely.”
Azzi’s expression softened. “Is that what you are? Lonely?”
“Not right now,” Paige said, a smile flickering—small but genuine. “Right now, I feel… seen.”
Azzi let that settle, the weight of it hitting with a gentle sort of gravity.
“I don’t say things like that easily,” Paige added, brushing her hair behind her ear. “And I don’t let myself feel things too quickly, either. Not anymore.”
Azzi didn’t push. She just waited, giving her space.
“But I’m attracted to you,” Paige said, looking directly at her now. “That’s not subtle. You’re beautiful, you’re bold… and you’re kind in a way I wasn’t expecting.”
Azzi’s lips parted like she might say something, but Paige kept going.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is… I don’t want this to be a rush to something that burns out fast. I’ve done the whole fireworks-then-crash thing. I want real. I want to take time to build something solid.”
Azzi’s smile returned, slower this time. “You want slow?”
Paige nodded. “I want right. Whatever pace that means.”
Azzi leaned in just a bit, close enough that Paige could smell her perfume—warm, floral, with a hint of something spicy underneath. Her voice was velvet when she said, “Then I’m not going anywhere. I’m good with slow. I’m even better with intentional.”
Paige exhaled—like she hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath.
Azzi reached out, brushed her fingers gently against Paige’s hand beneath the blanket. “You don’t have to be mysterious with me. You don’t have to shrink or edit or protect me from the truth of you.”
Paige let her fingers lace with Azzi’s, tentative but trusting. “You’re kind of infuriatingly good at this, you know.”
Azzi grinned. “Yeah, I get that a lot.”
They stayed there like that, wrapped in firelight and quiet understanding. No kiss, no grand gesture—just two hearts inching closer, trading pieces of truth, and deciding—together—that this was worth the time it would take to get it right.
—-
The beach had gone quiet, all but for the gentle hiss of the tide rolling in and out. Paige helped Azzi gather their things, folding the blanket with care, extinguishing the fire with a bucket of water she’d stashed nearby. Even in the simple movements, there was a softness in how they moved around each other now—like the walls had shifted, not fallen, but gently lowered.
They walked back to the car, still quiet, but it was a comfortable quiet. A kind of silence that said everything didn’t need to be spoken all at once.
Paige opened the passenger door to the Porsche for Azzi again, that subtle charm still on display. Azzi looked at her over the roof of the car as she settled into the seat.
“You always this smooth?” she teased.
Paige raised a brow, closing the door with a smirk. “Only when I mean it.”
They drove with the windows down. The cool night air slipped through the car, tousling Azzi’s curls and making Paige’s hair dance around her cheeks. The road was quiet, the city just a glow in the distance.
Azzi glanced at Paige, one arm resting on the door. “I haven’t had a night like this in… I don’t know. A long time.”
Paige’s hands stayed steady on the wheel, but her eyes flicked over, soft and sure. “Yeah?”
Azzi nodded. “Yeah. I’ve been on dates. I’ve had moments. But this?” She smiled. “This was real.”
Paige’s throat worked around something unspoken. “That’s what I wanted.”
The GPS told them they were two minutes from Azzi’s place, and neither of them seemed thrilled by that fact. The car fell quiet again, tension humming between them—no longer uncertainty, but a kind of charged potential.
Paige pulled into the driveway, cutting the engine. She turned slightly in her seat.
Azzi didn’t reach for the handle. “So…”
“So,” Paige echoed, smiling lightly. “This is the part where I pretend I’m not thinking about walking you to the door.”
Azzi leaned back against the seat, cocking her head. “And why wouldn’t you?”
Paige looked at her for a beat, something slow and magnetic moving between them. “Because if I do, I might not want to leave.”
Azzi’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Maybe I wouldn’t want you to.”
Paige let out a quiet breath, then shook her head with a small laugh. “This is dangerous.”
Azzi grinned. “We just said we’re going slow.”
Paige’s eyes held hers. “Yeah. Slow… doesn’t mean without feeling.”
For a moment, they just sat there in the dark, the engine ticking softly as it cooled. Paige finally reached out, brushing a stray curl from Azzi’s forehead, her fingers lingering just a second too long.
“I’ll walk you to the door,” she said, voice lower now.
Azzi didn’t say anything—just opened the door and waited for her on the sidewalk.
They stood at the front step, barely a foot apart. Paige glanced at her lips, then back up to her eyes.
Azzi gave her a lopsided smile. “You gonna kiss me or keep staring like that?”
Paige grinned, leaning in—not to kiss her, but to press a soft one to her cheek, right near her jaw. “Not yet.”
Azzi blinked, caught off guard in the best way.
Paige stepped back, hands in her pockets. “I’ll text you when I get home.”
“You better.”
Azzi watched as Paige walked back to the car, the Porsche purring to life and pulling away down the street, tail lights fading.
She touched her cheek where Paige had kissed her and shook her head to herself, smiling.
“Damn,” she whispered. “This woman’s gonna ruin me.”
—-
Paige pulled into her driveway, the low hum of the engine fading as she cut the ignition. She sat there for a moment, hands still on the steering wheel, staring out at the quiet night.
The porch light cast a soft glow across the front of her house, but it was nothing compared to the way her chest felt lit up. A warmth she hadn’t let herself feel in a long time. One she wasn’t entirely sure what to do with—but she knew she didn’t want to run from it.
She finally made her way inside, slipping off her shoes at the door and setting her keys on the counter. The house was still and dark, but her phone glowed in her hand as she unlocked it, thumb hovering for a second before opening her messages.
She didn’t even have to think about what to say.
Paige ⛳️
Made it home safe.
Whole drive back I couldn’t stop smiling.
The three dots popped up almost instantly.
Azzi 🏀
Guess I’m not the only one then.
I still haven’t wiped this stupid grin off my face.
Paige ⛳️
What are we doing to each other?
Azzi 🏀
Whatever it is… don’t stop.
You made tonight feel like a dream.
Paige ⛳️
If it was a dream, I’d ask you to show up in that cropped tank again.
Azzi 🏀
Oh, so that’s what had you fumbling the cork on the wine.
Paige ⛳️
I didn’t fumble. It was… a tactical delay.
Azzi 🏀
To stare at me longer? Bold move, Ms. Golf Star.
Paige ⛳️
Worked, didn’t it?
Azzi 🏀
Every damn time.
Goodnight, Paige.
Paige ⛳️
Goodnight, Azzi.
And… thank you. For trusting me with tonight.
Azzi 🏀
Anytime. You just keep showing up like that… and I’ll keep saying yes.
Paige set her phone down beside her bed, the smile still tugging at her lips as she pulled the covers over her. For the first time in a long time, her mind didn’t spiral before bed. No second-guessing, no cold retreat into self-doubt.
Just that steady warmth of something starting to matter.
And the image of Azzi’s grin, burned into her thoughts like a soft echo of a spark that hadn’t even reached its full flame yet.
—-
Azzi woke up to sunlight slipping through the blinds, painting stripes across her bedroom floor. For a moment, she just lay there, letting the warmth settle over her skin. The night before played back in her mind like a favorite song on repeat—the soft laughter, the quiet moments by the fire, the way Paige’s eyes held her with something so steady and real.
She reached over to her nightstand, fingers brushing her phone. Her thumb hovered over the screen before she finally unlocked it. No new messages yet, but the lingering smile from their late-night texts wouldn’t fade.
She stretched, the memory of Paige’s soft kiss on her cheek still warm against her skin. Azzi sat up, the casual confidence from last night mingling with a fluttering excitement she wasn’t used to feeling.
This was different.
Her teammates would joke about her “game face” — fierce, unbreakable. But with Paige, she’d let that guard slip, just a little. And she liked it.
Azzi grabbed her phone and tapped out a message:
Azzi 🏀
Morning, Ms. Golf Star. Still smiling over here. Ready to make this third date just as unforgettable?
She hit send and waited, heart thumping with the thrill of what was just beginning.
Paige ⛳️
Morning, Azzi. Still smiling too.
And yep, let’s make this third date even better than the last.
She glanced at the message once more before setting her phone down. Her smile lingered longer than she expected, the warmth spreading through her chest like sunlight.
The excitement of what was unfolding with Azzi felt both thrilling and grounding—a rare combination Paige wasn’t ready to let go of.
—-
The gym buzzed with energy, the crowd’s roar swelling like a tide as the teams warmed up on the polished court. Azzi laced up her sneakers, her pulse already picking up—not from nerves, but anticipation. Tonight wasn’t just any game; it was the first one since she and Paige had started seeing each other. And even though she hadn’t told Paige yet, part of her hoped she’d be there. She most definitely secretly hoped she would be. Back in the stands, the crowd was filling in fast. A few familiar faces, some fans, and then—right there, courtside—sat Paige, looking impossibly calm in a Nike puffer vest exposing her toned arms and baggy jean shorts looking effortlessly cool.
Azzi caught sight of her just as the referee blew the whistle. A slow grin spread across Azzi’s face, lighting her up from the inside out.
“Are you kidding me?” she muttered under her breath, already feeling her heart rate spike—for the game, sure, but mostly because Paige had made this night something unforgettable before it even started.
Paige caught her eye and gave a small, cheeky wave, the kind that said: Surprise.
The whistle blew, and Azzi’s world snapped into sharp focus—the squeak of sneakers on hardwood, the thud of the ball against the court, the shouts from teammates and coaches. But beneath it all, there was a new rhythm pulsing in her chest, louder than the crowd noise: Paige’s presence, just feet away, watching every move.
Azzi dribbled hard, weaving through defenders, but she could feel it—the weight of those steady blue eyes on her, the quiet encouragement in that gaze. It was like Paige was rooting for her in a way that no one else ever had, and it both calmed and fired her up.
She caught a quick glance from Paige during a break in play—a flash of that confident, knowing smile—and Azzi felt a spark she couldn’t ignore.
“Focus,” she told herself, but her body moved with a little more grace, a little more purpose, as if Paige’s energy was a secret boost.
Every pass, every shot, every sprint carried a new meaning tonight. Azzi wasn’t just playing the game anymore—she was playing for something more.
Paige sat court side, her eyes glued to Azzi as the game unfolded. Every move Azzi made was like poetry in motion—the fierce determination in her eyes, the effortless way she commanded the court, the raw power behind each dribble and shot.
Paige couldn’t help but be captivated. It wasn’t just the athleticism; it was the fire, the passion, the way Azzi seemed completely in her element. There was a magnetic pull, something electric that made Paige’s chest tighten and her breath catch.
She found herself leaning forward, unable to tear her gaze away. The way Azzi moved was hypnotic—grace under pressure, strength without arrogance. Paige felt a swell of pride, the kind you get when watching someone you care about absolutely shine.
Her mind wandered briefly to how lucky she felt—here she was, court side, witnessing this side of Azzi few others got to see. It was intimate, powerful, and quietly thrilling all at once.
As Azzi sank a basket, the crowd erupted, but Paige’s focus never wavered. She was right there with her—heart pounding, breath held, utterly mesmerized.
The final buzzer sounded, and the gym exploded in cheers. Azzi’s team had won, and she’d put on a show—32 points, every one of them hard-earned, every move a testament to her skill and drive.
Paige rose from her seat, clapping loudly, her smile wide and proud. As Azzi jogged off the court, sweat glistening on her skin and a triumphant glow in her eyes, their gazes met again. Paige caught the subtle smirk Azzi gave her—a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration.
Azzi weaved through teammates and fans, but her steps quickened when she spotted Paige waiting just beyond the barrier. Without hesitation, she slipped past the crowd and into Paige’s arms, the intensity of the game melting away in the warmth of their embrace.
“Wow,” Paige breathed, her voice low. “You were incredible out there.”
Azzi laughed softly, resting her forehead against Paige’s. “I had the best motivation sitting right there.”
Paige chuckled, brushing a damp strand of hair from Azzi’s face. “I’m lucky you noticed me.”
Azzi grinned. “Lucky? No, Paige… I’m the lucky one.”
They stayed like that for a moment, the world around them fading until it was just the two of them—breathing each other in, feeling the quiet thrill of shared victories, both on and off the court.
—-
The night air was cool against Paige’s skin as she stepped outside the arena, the distant hum of the crowd still echoing behind her. She glanced at her watch, then scanned the parking lot for Azzi while waiting at her car. Her heart fluttered with a mix of excitement and anticipation—not just for the surprise she’d planned but for the quiet moments ahead, just the two of them.
Paige’s lips curved into a smile. Azzi stepped out, still glowing from the game, her hair pulled back in a loose bun, eyes bright with curiosity.
“Ready?” Paige asked, opening the passenger door and holding it for her.
Azzi slid in with a grin. “I’m ready if you are, Ms. Golf Star.”
Paige climbed in and started the engine, the familiar roar of the car filling the space between them. As they pulled away from the arena, Paige reached over, taking Azzi’s hand in hers.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been planning this,” Paige admitted, her voice soft but steady. “I wanted tonight to feel special… just like you.”
Azzi squeezed her hand, her smile turning tender. “Well, you’ve already made it unforgettable. I’m all in.”
As the city lights blurred past the windows, the promise of the night stretched out before them—full of surprises, laughter, and the kind of connection that made everything else fade away.
The Porsche purred smoothly as Paige navigated through the quiet city streets, the night air cool but comfortable inside the car. Azzi’s fingers still laced with hers, her eyes flickering between the road ahead and Paige’s focused profile.
“So,” Azzi began, a teasing smile tugging at her lips, “how exactly did you pull off showing up courtside tonight? I mean, it’s not every day a pro golfer sneaks into my basketball game looking like she owns the place.”
Paige chuckled softly, glancing over with a playful sparkle in her eyes. “Let’s just say, I have my ways. A few calls, a little charm… and maybe some sweet talking to the right people.”
Azzi laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. “You’re full of surprises, Paige. Seriously, I’m impressed. You’re making it really hard to keep up.”
“Well,” Paige replied, her tone low and mischievous, “I figured if I was going to date a basketball star, I’d better step up my game.”
Azzi shot her a mock glare. “Oh, really? So this is all a competition now?”
“Maybe,” Paige said with a wink. “But the prize is definitely worth it.”
They shared a laugh, the tension melting into easy warmth. Azzi’s gaze softened, and she leaned in just a little closer.
“Just so you know,” she murmured, “I’m really glad you showed up tonight.”
Paige squeezed her hand, her smile sincere. “Me too.”
The city lights stretched on before them, but inside the car, it felt like they were the only two people in the world—racing toward a night full of promise.
The Porsche glided to a smooth stop in front of a charming, softly lit house nestled among tall oaks. Paige killed the engine and turned to Azzi, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
“Welcome to my little surprise,” Paige said, a shy smile tugging at her lips.
Azzi blinked, a flicker of disbelief crossing her face. “Wait… this is your place?”
Paige nodded, her fingers still intertwined with Azzi’s. “I wanted somewhere private, quiet. Somewhere we could just be us without distractions.”
Azzi’s grin softened into something more vulnerable, mixed with a touch of awe. “Paige… we’ve only just started. I wasn’t expecting you to bring me here.”
Paige shrugged, a little breathless. “I know we said we’d take things slow. But this feels right. No rush, just… honesty and space. I wanted you to see where I’m most myself.”
Azzi looked around, taking in the warm glow spilling from the windows and the gentle hum of nighttime life. Her heart thudded—not from nerves this time, but from something deeper.
“This is… really special,” she whispered. “Thank you for trusting me.”
Paige leaned in, brushing a soft kiss to Azzi’s temple. “Trust goes both ways. And I want this—whatever ‘this’ is—to be real.”
Azzi smiled, feeling the weight of that word settle between them like a promise.
—-
Paige led Azzi inside, the soft click of the door closing behind them muffling the quiet of the night. The interior was modern and clean, with sleek lines and an understated elegance that felt warm rather than cold. Azzi’s eyes immediately started taking everything in—the space spoke volumes without shouting.
On one wall, a large piece of abstract art caught her attention. The colors—deep blues and greens—reminded her of the lakes and forests Paige had mentioned back in Minnesota. A small plaque beneath it read simply: “Lake Superior,” and Azzi smiled to herself, already picturing Paige growing up surrounded by those tranquil waters.
As they moved further into the living room, Azzi spotted carefully arranged sports memorabilia—framed photos of iconic golf moments, a vintage set of clubs displayed with pride, and a few tasteful trophies tucked on a minimalist shelf. Nothing flashy, but each item felt like a quiet nod to Paige’s passion and dedication.
Azzi picked up a small, polished wooden box on the coffee table. She opened it curiously to find a collection of handwritten notes and postcards—letters from fans, thoughtful messages from friends, and even a few faded birthday cards. It felt intimate, like a glimpse into the chapters of Paige’s life.
Paige watched her quietly, a little shy but pleased. “I guess I’m not just a golfer,” she said softly. “There’s a lot more under the surface.”
Azzi turned, her eyes warm and sincere. “I like that,” she said. “It feels real. Like I’m getting to know the you that doesn’t show up on the course or the headlines.”
Paige gave a small laugh, her confidence flickering back in. “That’s the goal.”
Azzi stepped closer, brushing a hand lightly over Paige’s. “Thanks for sharing this with me.”
Paige’s smile deepened, and for a moment, the room felt charged with something gentle but electric—a connection that went beyond words.
After dinner, Paige carried the last of the dishes to the kitchen with a soft smile, then returned to find Azzi already settled on the couch, a plush throw draped over her legs. The fire in the hearth cast flickering shadows across the room, painting their faces in warm golden light.
Paige sank down beside her, pulling the blanket over both their laps. The quiet crackle of the fire filled the space between their words, making everything feel intimate and slow.
“So,” Paige began, her voice gentle, “tell me about growing up. What was it like for you before all the basketball fame?”
Azzi’s eyes softened, a trace of nostalgia threading through her usual boldness. “I grew up in the DMV area. Nothing glamorous—lots of scrapes, long afternoons shooting hoops in the driveway, and dreaming big even when it felt impossible.”
Paige nodded, listening intently.
“My family was huge on community and faith,” Azzi continued. “Basketball was my way out—and my way to stay connected, too. It’s funny how it all brought me here, to LA.”
Paige smiled, her fingers brushing against Azzi’s. “For me, it was Minnesota. Quiet winters, lots of snow, and golf courses I knew like the back of my hand. I didn’t always think I’d make it out here—sometimes it felt like the world was too big, too loud.”
Azzi glanced at her, curiosity in her gaze. “What made you take the leap?”
Paige paused, her voice dropping just a little. “I wanted to prove to myself I could do more. Not just for the game, but for me. I needed to step outside that quiet, reserved version of myself.”
Azzi reached out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Paige’s ear. “And look at you now. Confident, even if you don’t always see it.”
Paige laughed softly, leaning into the touch. “Maybe I’m still figuring it out.”
The city outside faded away, leaving only the two of them—two athletes with different stories, but a growing connection that felt beautifully real.
The fire crackled low, casting a golden warmth over the living room. Paige and Azzi sat side by side on the couch, the blanket draped over their legs doing little to mask the way their bodies naturally leaned toward each other now. The air between them was quiet, but it pulsed—alive with the weight of everything unsaid.
Azzi exhaled slowly, eyes on the flickering flames before shifting to Paige. “You know…” she started, voice low, hesitant but honest, “I’m finding it really hard not to lean over and kiss you right now.”
Paige turned, eyes locking onto hers with something soft and vulnerable blooming behind them. She didn’t say anything at first—just took Azzi in. The curve of her smile, the nervous tension in her jaw, the way her fingers twitched slightly where they rested on the blanket.
“Yeah?” Paige finally replied, voice barely a whisper.
Azzi nodded, her gaze flickering to Paige’s mouth and then back up. “Yeah. Really hard.”
Paige’s lips curled into a subtle, teasing smirk, but her eyes gave her away—completely open, completely taken. “Then maybe… don’t fight it.”
Azzi leaned in, slowly at first, giving Paige every chance to pull away. But she didn’t. Paige met her halfway, her hand lightly resting against Azzi’s cheek as their lips finally met—tentative at first, then deepening with the kind of certainty that only built through weeks of slow, intentional connection.
The kiss wasn’t hurried. It was full of all the lingering looks, the late-night texts, the held-back confessions. Paige breathed in softly as they pulled apart just an inch, eyes still closed, lips brushing.
Azzi whispered, “Been wanting to do that since the golf course.”
Paige’s thumb gently grazed her jaw. “Me too.”
They stayed close, foreheads touching, a quiet smile tugging at both their lips.
And when Paige finally leaned back against the couch, Azzi followed, tucking into her side, the fire now a soft background to a moment that neither of them would forget.
No more wondering.
No more waiting.
Just them—finally, and fully—beginning.
They sat nestled into each other, the quiet hum of the fire filling the space between heartbeats. Paige’s arm draped loosely around Azzi’s shoulder, her fingers absentmindedly tracing light circles along her arm. Neither of them spoke much after the kiss—they didn’t need to. The silence wasn’t awkward; it was full and easy, like they’d finally found the pause button in a world that never stopped moving.
Azzi let out a soft sigh, her body sinking deeper into the comfort of Paige’s side. “This is dangerous,” she murmured.
Paige smiled against her temple. “What is?”
“This couch. The fire. You.”
A light laugh escaped Paige as she leaned her head back against the cushion. “If that’s your way of saying you’re getting sleepy, I’ll take it.”
“I’m just saying… I might never move again.”
Neither of them did.
Eventually, the warmth and the rhythm of shared breath lulled them into a light, unintentional sleep—soft, dreamless, safe. Wrapped in stillness.
When Azzi blinked awake, the room had dimmed even further. The fire was dying down, flickering embers barely giving off light now. She shifted slightly and felt Paige stir beside her.
“What time is it?” Paige mumbled, voice thick with sleep.
Azzi lifted her phone. “4:07 AM,” she said with a yawn. “Damn.”
Paige blinked, rubbing her eyes as she sat up slowly. “Wow. We really knocked out, huh?”
Azzi smiled, hair a little tousled, cheeks warm from sleep. “Your couch is dangerous. Told you.”
Paige glanced at her, then stood and stretched before looking back down at her. “You don’t have to drive home this late. Or early, I guess. You can crash here if you want. Guest room’s made up.”
Azzi raised a brow. “You sure?”
“Of course,” Paige said, tone gentle. “You can take the guest room—or, I mean, if you’re more comfortable out here, that’s fine too. I just don’t want you out on the road right now.”
Azzi stood, still wrapped in the blanket like a cape, and gave her a sleepy grin. “You’re really making it hard not to fall for you.”
Paige met her gaze, eyes soft. “I’m not trying to make it hard.”
A beat passed.
Azzi nodded, lips curving again. “Guest room’s perfect. But if I wake up in the middle of the night and raid your fridge, just pretend it didn’t happen.”
Paige laughed as she led her down the hall. “Noted.”
And just like that, the night stretched a little longer. Not rushed. Just real.
Exactly what they both wanted.
—-
The faint glow of sunlight crept through the curtains of the guest bedroom, gently nudging Azzi awake. She blinked slowly, disoriented for a moment before the memory of the night before came rushing back—couch cuddles, quiet laughs, their first kiss.
She stretched, rubbing her eyes, then made her way down the hallway, hair messy, heart calm. The house was still quiet, the kind of quiet that made the morning feel sacred.
When she opened the door to the bathroom, a small folded stack of clothes caught her eye. On the counter sat a pair of soft, gray sweats and a worn-out college golf T-shirt that had clearly seen better days—but it was clean, folded neatly, and smelled like whatever detergent Paige used: subtle and calming.
There was a sticky note on top.
For you—if you don’t feel like putting yesterday’s jeans back on :)
Azzi smirked, heart warming. She quickly changed, the clothes comfortably oversized. The shirt hung just right off her frame, and she tugged the drawstring on the sweats, still feeling the softness from sleep trailing through her limbs.
As she stepped out and padded barefoot down the hall toward the kitchen, the smell hit her—pancakes and fresh coffee. Her stomach growled in approval.
There was Paige, back turned to her, seated on one of the stools at the island. She had her iPad propped up, scrolling through something with casual focus, her coffee mug balanced in one hand. A stack of golden pancakes waited on the counter, two plates already set.
Azzi leaned against the doorframe for a second, taking it all in.
The simplicity. The thoughtfulness. The quiet charm that Paige didn’t even realize she had.
Azzi couldn’t stop the soft smile that tugged at her lips.
“Okay, I know I’m the one who said I might raid the fridge,” she teased, voice a little raspy from sleep, “but you’re out here making a whole breakfast buffet.”
Paige looked up immediately, eyes lighting up when she saw her. Her gaze lingered just a moment longer than it needed to on Azzi in her clothes, something flickering behind her eyes before she cleared her throat and smiled.
“You hungry?” Paige asked, setting her iPad down.
Azzi walked over, sliding onto the stool next to her. “Starving. But this? You’re spoiling me.”
Paige shrugged, a little sheepish. “Just figured you might be hungry before heading out. And it felt weird not to do something.”
Azzi picked up her fork, stealing a bite off her own plate. “You’ve got a strange definition of ‘not doing something.’”
Paige laughed softly, and for a moment, they just ate in companionable silence, the kind of silence that didn’t beg to be filled.
Eventually, Azzi glanced over at her. “You do this for all your overnight guests?”
Paige quirked a brow. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
Azzi leaned her cheek on her hand, smiling behind her coffee mug. “I think I’m starting to.”
And just like that, the morning felt even warmer than the sunrise.

mal apologist 4 life babey
I know that I talk a lot here on thebluestbluewords dot tumblr dot com about how Mal is my favorite, and I truly believe that she thought she was making the best/only choices available to her throughout the Descendants movies, even when those choices are objectively pretty stupid and bad. (this is the setup, I swear)
I’m reading Mal’s Diary for the first time, and every other page is hitting WEIRDLY HARD with how much Mal is a child who was never really given an option outside of what her mother wanted. Which, okay! That’s relatable for a lot of kids, even if their parents aren’t the Mistress of All Evil. A lot of young kids feel like they don’t have agency in their lives, because their parents do have a lot of control over what they can do and believe, even if they’re not…evil about it. And seeing that echoed in a movie where the main theme is about choosing good no matter who your parents are, and making your own path, is great!! It’s a solid message and execution of the theme.
As an adult….it makes me REALLY REALLY sad for Mal that she basically goes from being trapped under her mother’s power, to trapped under the weight of every royal expectation of what she “should” be doing. I know these books aren’t supposed to be that deep, but just….hear me out here.
Tumblr media
Mal is a child who was mistreated by her mother for the first sixteen years of her life. Her mother holds all of the power here. Mal doesn’t have a choice in the matter. She can’t run, she can’t hide, and she can’t refuse to leave. Her mother is using her, and Mal knows it, but she also doesn’t have an alternative. Maleficent wants an heir, and she has the power to punish her daughter for the rest of her life if she doesn’t comply. Mal doesn’t start out the movie with any real agency, because her mother has cut off all of her options.
Tumblr media
She’s been raised by a mother who will not miss her. Maleficent took ZERO convincing to send her daughter off to boarding school with no gaurentee that she’d ever return. Maleficent was the one convincing the other three parents to send their children off the isle. She doesn’t see Mal as a person, she sees her as a tool. Mal might know that she’s valuable to her mother, but she’s valuable in the same way that a hammer is valuable, as a tool. If Mal messes up, she’s grounded for the rest of her life, and I don’t think it’s too far of a reach to assume that Maleficent does truly mean that. A woman who is prepared to put a curse on a baby that won’t activate for sixteen years has the patience to lock her daughter away like a broken toy, and from the way Mal talks about her in the book, I don’t doubt that she’s go through with it. To her mother, Mal is valued as a tool, not a human person with independent thoughts and feelings.
Tumblr media
A couple of pages later, Mal is writing about her future. She spends one line on what she might have wanted to be, and then outright says “it doesn’t matter”. Her own desires don’t matter, because her mother wants a mini-villain of her own, and she’s groomed Mal since birth to step up and take on that role.
Even in her own diary, Mal’s only just starting to think that it would be nice if she wasn’t just her mother’s pawn. She’s not seriously considering other options for her future. She doesn’t see those other options as a choice that’s available to her, but she’s finally able to think that maybe, it would be nice if she HAD that choice. Sixteen years. It took Mal sixteen years to get to a place where she’s starting to think that it would be cool if her future wasn’t owned by her mother. She’s only just now in a place of physical safety where she can even wonder if she has options outside of her future being controlled by her mother. Is it any wonder that this girl makes some bad choices as soon as she has any agency?? She’s never had the OPTION to make bad choices before, because all of her actions, every part of her future, was planned out by her mother.
(Why yes, I think about stage mother Maleficent AU all the time. Pushing her daughter to be the best, the most competitive, and most ruthless performer?? Having a vendetta against the rival stage mothers with their daughters who could never be as talented or as Worthy Of Trophies as hers?? Projecting her own glory days onto her daughter?? It’s basically the perfect AU to explore the parent-child relationships of this movie through a more focused lens).

Trapped: Below Zero (Subnautica)
It had only been a few weeks since you and your friends escaped the endless depths of Subnautica, but the thrill of the game—and the bond forged in its terrifying waters—lingered. That's why you all sat crowded in a room, your gaming setup in front of other's. This time you guys were playing a modded version of Subnautica: Below Zero.
"No way it can happen again, right?" Uraraka asked nervously, glancing around the room. Everyone agreed to play other games, because maybe Subnautica was cursed.
"Relax," Ashido said, laughing. "We survived last time, didn't we? Plus, imagine we get trapped in this one too! Wouldn't that be hilarious?" Ironic.
You couldn't respond quick enough, the familiar distortion rippled across the screen. That same eerie feeling from last time filled the air, and the room went unnaturally still. Your stomach dropped as the light grew blindingly bright, and once again, you felt yourself falling.
+++
When you opened your eyes, icy wind clawed at your face. Snow whipped through the air, and frostbite nipped at your fingers. You were standing on an alien tundra, the vast white expanse dotted with jagged rocks and glowing flora.
"No. Freaking. Way." Kirishima muttered, his breath visible in the frigid air.
"We're back," Uraraka whispered, her voice trembling. "But... it's colder this time."
Ashido let out a nervous laugh, rubbing her arms. "Okay, not funny anymore. I didn't mean it literally!"
"Everyone shut up!" Bakugou snapped, already inspecting his surroundings. "We've done this before. Same rules apply—we survive, and we find the way out.."
His commanding tone snapped everyone into action, but you could see the unease in his crimson eyes. It was clear he wasn't thrilled to be back in another life-or-death game. Neither were you. You knew a lot about this game too, yet Bakugou wasn't as versed as the last one. You had begged him to get the game and when it was on sale, you ended up buying it for him.
The first few hours were rough. The cold was relentless, and even with the basic thermal gear you scavenged from the starting pod. It was hard to stay warm. You were used to the water around you so being on a different alien planet and a snowy one with more land, at that, it proved to be harder. You and Bakugou retook charge, splitting up tasks while the rest of the group adjusted to the new environment.
"You know the drill," Bakugou told you as you both worked on constructing a shelter. "We've gotta find the endgame. These extras'll just slow us down if we don't stay ahead."
"Don't call them extras," you chided, though your lips quirked in amusement. "But yeah, we've got to get to the Architect's facility and figure out how to escape."
He nodded, his usual sharpness softened by the familiarity of working with you. "At least you know what you're doing."
The compliment caught you off guard. It wasn't like Bakugou to openly praise anyone, but the experience of being trapped together once before had shifted things between you. The tension wasn't gone anymore. It had just... changed.
+++
Over the next few days, the group settled into a routine. You divided responsibilities, with some of you exploring the icy waters while others gathered resources from the glacial landscape. The danger felt even more pronounced in Below Zero, with shadowy creatures lurking beneath the ice and unpredictable weather threatening your survival at every turn.
One afternoon, while venturing into a deep underwater cave with Bakugou, a Shadow Leviathan attacked. Its screech echoed through the water, and panic set in as it barreled toward your small sea truck.
"Hold on!" You shouted, swerving the vehicle sharply.
"Don't screw this up!" Bakugou barked, his hand gripping the console tightly. But beneath the anger, there was an edge of worry in his voice, for you that is. He knew you knew the game better than him, he knew you knew how to get out of this situation. It just worried him.
The Leviathan slammed into the truck, sending it spiraling. You struggled to regain control, and just as it lunged for a second strike, Bakugou deployed a decoy flare. The creature veered off, distracted by the light, and you took the opportunity to speed away.
When you finally reached the surface and docked the truck, your hands were trembling. Bakugou turned to you, his usual scowl replaced by something almost gentle.
"You okay?" He asked, his voice low.
"Yeah, I think," you breathed, though your heart was still racing. "Thanks for the save." You sat on the ice, staring into the water below. Dammit..
"Don't mention it," he muttered, but the intensity of his gaze lingered. "Tough cookie." He murmurs, looking at you. His face softened slightly.
+++
As the days turned into weeks, the bond between you and Bakugou grew once again. When you established a friendship after the last one, you slowly started to show Bakugou that you liked him as more than friends and wondered if he felt the same way. There was an unspoken understanding between you. He trusted you in ways he didn't trust the others, and you found yourself leaning on him more than you ever thought you would.
One night, while the group huddled in the base during a blizzard, you found yourselves alone in the storage room, organizing supplies.
"You're different here," you said, breaking the comfortable silence.
"What the hell's that supposed to mean?" He grumbled, though there was no real bite to his words.
"I mean... you're still you, but you're also not just yelling all the time," you teased, a small smile playing on your lips.
He rolled his eyes, but you caught the faintest hint of a smirk. "Maybe you're just less annoying than the rest of them."
"Oh, so I'm special now?" You joked, but your heart skipped a beat when he didn't immediately deny it.
"Yeah," he said quietly, surprising you. "Guess you are."
You turned to look at Bakugou, unsure if you'd heard him correctly. His back was toward you as he fiddled with a crate of batteries, but his movements were slower, almost hesitant.
"Wait," you said, stepping closer to him and peering over his shoulder. "Did you just admit I'm special?"
"Don't make a big deal out of it," he muttered, his voice low but steady. He didn't look at you, but the tips of his ears were noticeably red.
You bit your lip, trying to suppress a grin. "I think this counts as a big deal. Should I alert the others?"
"Try it, and I'll throw you outside," he growled, but there was no venom in his words. Instead, he finally turned to face you, his crimson eyes locking onto yours. "You're not like them. You're... different. In a good way."
Your heart stuttered. "Bakugou, I-"
"Don't." His voice softened as he stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. "Not unless you mean it." He wanted to reach out, caress your face, but that was unlike him.
You hesitated for only a moment before you smiled, your voice steady. "I do." You rested your forehead against Bakugou's chest briefly. He stiffened slightly, but didn't move.
The faintest smirk tugged at his lips. "Good. Then shut up and help me finish this before the extras complain."
+++
The Architect's facility, through the phase gate, was the key to escaping. The group endured freezing storms and alien creatures. Yet, Bakugou remained steadfast, his determination never wavering. With him at your side, you felt unstoppable.
When you finally stood before the facility's massive, glowing entrance, exhaustion and relief washed over you. The group cheered, celebrating the milestone, but your eyes were on Bakugou while everyone else moved in and started the motions of the gate.
"We're almost there," you said, your voice barely above a whisper.
He nodded, his expression serious, but he looked at you with a softness. "Let's finish this."
Once everyone was done with their tasks, you placed your hand on the lever and took a deep breath. When the final sequence began, a blinding light enveloped the room.
+++
You woke up back in your room, the faint hum of your computer was heard. The group was sprawled across the floor, groaning as they stirred awake.
"We're back?" Ashido asked, sitting up and glancing around.
"Looks like it," Todoroki confirmed, his usual calm tone tinged with relief.
As the others began to laugh and cry in equal measure, you found yourself sitting beside Bakugou. He was quiet, his gaze fixed on the blank monitor. Without thinking, you reached over and placed a hand on his arm.
"Hey," you said softly. "We did it. Again."
He turned to you, and for a moment, his guarded expression softened. "Yeah. We did."
The others were too busy celebrating to notice when Bakugou's hand brushed against yours, his touch lingering just long enough to send warmth through you that no frost could ever chase away. You intertwined your fingers together and the two of you remained quiet as you watched the others celebrate being back home again.

“In case you didn’t notice, I like polka dots,” the woman in front of him said, pointing at the polka-dotted summer dress she wore. “What about you, Deku?”
Izuku smiled politely at her, unsure whether she was echoing his earlier request about telling him a random thing about herself, or was asking if he was into polka dots too. “Polka dots are great,” he settled on saying, turning his head to look for the waiter responsible for their table. He needed that glass of red wine if he were to go through with this.
The woman smiled brightly, her pearly white teeth glinting in the warm light of the expensive restaurant as she continued to stare at him, tracking his every movement. It was the first thing he noticed about her, not the reddish hair with split ends or the mascara clumping her lashes. She ogled him, confirmed by her bold comment about how his white denim jeans “hugged him so right.”
Years ago, this sort of comment would’ve been the right setup to end up having someone keeping his side of the bed warm for a night, or better said, sweaty. But not in the present time. No way. Izuku was too smitten with you. One mere mention of your name sent his heart into a frenzy of dizzying pitter-patter.
So what the hell was he doing here with a woman whose name he couldn’t even remember?
“Your freckles kinda look like tiny polka dots,” she said.
“I don’t think so.”
His swift retort caught her off guard for a moment, brown eyes widening a fraction before giving him a coy look.
“Then what do you think they look like?”

“Do you know the rules?” for the question prompts!
(from this list)
Stepping outside my comfort zone to post part one of something that I haven't finished yet, because I could not for the life of me decide between doing this as a pre-ship thing, a "this is the oh moment" thing, or a "they've already been in each other's pants" thing. So I'm writing all of them.
Anyway, here it is. 1276 words so far.
~
Twister, Part 1
“Do you know the rules?”
Steve stares at Dustin and knows, knows he’s taking too long to answer if Dustin is being serious. But . . . is he being serious? Really?
Even though Steve wants to give the kid more credit than that, the way Dustin is staring at him over the top of the spinner board suggests that he is one hundred percent asking him this question.
“Dude,” Steve sighs. “It’s fucking Twister.”
Dustin raises his eyebrows in classic Dustin fashion. (Eddie, watching the standoff from the side, pretends to scratch his nose for cover while discretely mouthing to Steve, ‘Tone.’ Steve tamps down the impulse to smirk in agreement.) “Soooo, you’re saying—”
“Yes, Henderson, I know the damn rules. Hands and feet go on specific colors, first person to wipe out loses. Toddlers can play this, man.”
No one else seems to be paying much attention, still preoccupied with barbeque spread over on the patio—slow eaters, all of ‘em. The burgers and chips and soda will run out sooner or later though. Steve would prefer this heckling to be over by the time any other players straggle over to their patch of shaded lawn.
“Do you need a refresher on left and right?” Dustin asks, and Steve tips his head back to stare at the sky outside of Joyce and Hopper’s new house in despair. “Because the other day—”
Eddie snorts, and now he’s scratching the other side of his nose, no doubt mouthing encouragement to Dustin. Traitor.
“The other day,” Steve snaps, “I missed that turn because you waited until the last possible second to tell me you wanted to go to Mike’s instead of Will’s! And I took the next turn instead, it barely added half a minute to the meter.”
“Meter?” Dustin frowns, perplexed. (Score one for team Harrington! . . . Against a lot, but Steve will take it.) “What meter?”
“Like in a taxi, egghead. I’m going to send away for one and start charging you a fare every time I give you a ride if you don’t cool it with this shit.”
Eddie lets out an honest to god guffaw, and now it’s Dustin‘s turn to look betrayed. Pretty dramatic of him, in Steve’s opinion, but they get through the rest of the game’s minimal setup without much more sniping. When they’re done Dustin yells at his friends to come play, then lets out a frustrated huff and heads towards the patio when no one gets up.
Steve and Eddie both survey the mat and its colorful dots with a sense of accomplishment, minuscule as it is. Well—minuscule for Steve. His bites have pretty much healed up. Eddie still has a ways to go, deeper holes in his skin and muscles to knit slowly up into knots of scar tissue. Sometimes, if he moves too quick or for too long, Steve catches him wincing when he thinks no one’s looking.
“You playing?” Steve asks, somewhere between curious and concerned.
There’s a flash in Eddie’s eyes as he glances over that Steve doesn’t know how to read. If he had to guess, he’d say that the guy doesn’t want to be babied, which. Understandable. But the look makes Steve’s skin prickle oddly, like. . . . Well, he doesn’t know, but like something. (There’s a reason the Henderson vs Harrington board, which thankfully doesn’t literally exist, is showing about a million to one. Steve tries not to think about it much.)
“What, and miss a game that even toddlers can play?” Eddie smirks, putting his hands on his hips in a perfect mirror of Steve—who hadn’t even realized he’s doing that, shit. “Not on your life, Big Boy.”
The words are still echoing in Steve’s head several rounds of the stupid game later when he puts his right foot on blue. Eddie, with his right hand and foot on yellow and blue respectively, left foot camped out over on red, is hovering smack dab over his lap.
One slip and, Jesus fucking Christ, Munson will be able to weigh in on that big boy thing for sure, and Steve just doesn’t feel ready for that. Not while Mike Wheeler is making the noodliest human bridge right next to them, both feet on green and both hands on red. They shouldn’t have put Will in charge of the spinner for this round, because it's the rest of them that keep getting all the weird pretzel positions.
“Robin, right foot on blue,” Will calls.
With a groan, Robin moves her foot to the nearest blue circle—right under Steve. “If your ass touches my foot, Harrington, I swear to god,” she mutters under her breath.
“If my ass touches your foot, your gnarly toenails are going to jab me through my shorts,” Steve grumbles back. Because what the hell, it’s not like he talked her into this! She’d agreed to play all on her own.
“Now now, children,” Eddie says. (Is it Steve, or does his voice sound strained?) “Robin’s toenails are lovely, and so is Stevie’s ass. Let’s not any of us be Debbie Downers here.”
“Eddie,” Will calls next, and the spinner whirs. “Right hand green.”
There’s a pause, then Eddie lets out a heavy breath and starts inching that hand back. His fingers crab-walk over the plastic mat. “Some—Someone tell me when I hit it. Can’t see back there.”
And Steve. . . . Steve can see it, alright. In slow motion, almost as though he knows exactly what’s coming a second before it actually happens. Eddie is almost there when he starts trying to switch from crouched forward over his feet like a gargoyle to leaning back on that hand into a full backward arch. Except he doesn’t quite make it, buckling halfway to the equilibrium point, and goes down like a brick.
He lands exactly the way Steve had worried about, forcing an undignified sound from Steve’s lungs as he drops onto Robin’s foot, who yelps and falls over.
“Did I win?” Mike asks, peering upside down at them from amidst his dangling hair. “Hey, I won!”
“My elbow,” Robin groans from half on the mat, half eating grass.
“Off,” Steve wheezes, shoving at Eddie and trying to uncross his eyes.
Eddie rolls away with a groan of his own, arms wrapped around his middle. “Sorry dude. Slipped. Ow.”
Steve—who did get jabbed in the ass by his best friend’s big toenail, thankyouverymuch, in addition to now very much wanting an ice pack to shove down the front of his shorts—doesn’t bother to call bullshit. He knows what happened, Eddie knows what happened. . . . Eddie probably knows that he knows, and that’s enough.
So he ignores Mike’s victory dance (if you could call it that, the kid has no grace whatsoever). He stays on his back, staring up at the gently shifting leaves of the tree hanging over them, and nudges Eddie gingerly in the back with his knee. “Y’okay?”
Will is already helping Robin to her feet. In the background, Steve can hear Joyce directing someone to bring ice. And Argyle saying something about purple palm trees.
“Yeah,” Eddie pants. He cranes his head around to look at Steve with an apologetic smile that still, somehow, makes Steve’s skin prickle. Weird. “Yeah, I’m good,” he says, sounding more recovered. “You?”
Steve lets his eyes fall closed. “I may not be able to have children now, but I’ll live.”
He smirks when he hears Eddie’s snort of surprised laughter. When Eddie, sheepish, tries to apologize again, Steve is already prepared. "No, you’re right, that was like something out of the fucking Three Stooges.”
It’s fine. He needs ice, some aspirin, and no more Twister ever, and he'll be fine.

The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up a Smart Home on a Budget in 2025
Imagine walking into your home after a long day, saying “Lights on,” and watching your living room glow—all without flipping a switch or breaking the bank. In 2025, creating a smart home doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With affordable devices, clever hacks, and a little planning, you can automate your space for under $300. This ultimate guide will walk you through setting up a budget-friendly smart home, spotlighting low-cost, lesser-known options that rival the big names like Amazon, Google, and Philips Hue. Whether you’re a renter, a homeowner, or just dipping your toes into smart tech, you’ll find practical steps and hidden gems here to make your home smarter in 2025.
Why Build a Budget Smart Home in 2025?
Smart home tech isn’t just for tech millionaires anymore. Prices have dropped, and new players have entered the market, offering affordable alternatives to premium brands. In 2025, advancements like the Matter standard (a universal smart home protocol) mean even budget devices work seamlessly together. Plus, automating lights, locks, and more can save energy, boost security, and add convenience—all for less than you’d spend on a fancy dinner out.
But why focus on budget options? Most guides push pricey ecosystems like Apple HomeKit or Google Nest, ignoring the fact that 63% of smart home adopters in a 2024 survey said cost was their biggest barrier (source: Statista). This guide flips the script, prioritizing devices under $50 and lesser-known brands that deliver big value without the hype.
What You’ll Need for a Budget Smart Home Setup
Before diving into specific devices, let’s cover the essentials. A smart home needs three things: a hub (or app control), smart devices, and a plan. Here’s how to keep it cheap:
Hub: A central controller (like a smart speaker or your phone) to manage devices. Many budget devices now work with free apps, skipping the need for a dedicated hub.
Devices: Lights, plugs, sensors, or locks—start small and expand.
Wi-Fi: Most budget smart devices rely on your existing 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, so no fancy upgrades are required.
Budget: We’ll aim for a full setup under $300, with individual items as low as $10.
Now, let’s explore the best low-budget options for 2025, focusing on under-the-radar brands and practical picks.

Best Budget Smart Home Devices for 2025
1. Smart Hubs: The Brain of Your Setup
A hub ties your devices together. While Amazon Echo Dot ($50) and Google Nest Mini ($50) are popular, here are cheaper, lesser-known alternatives:
Merkury Innovations Smart Wi-Fi Speaker ($25) Sold at Walmart, this compact speaker doubles as a hub with Alexa compatibility. It’s not as sleek as an Echo, but at half the price, it controls lights, plugs, and more via voice or the Geeni app.
Moeshouse Zigbee Hub ($20) This tiny device uses Zigbee (a low-power protocol) instead of Wi-Fi, connecting up to 50 devices. Pair it with the Tuya app (free) for control. It’s perfect if you want to scale up later with Zigbee-compatible gear. Pro Tip: Works with Matter-ready devices, future-proofing your setup. External Link: Learn more about Zigbee vs. Wi-Fi on SmartHomeWorld.
Your Smartphone ($0) Skip the hub entirely! Many budget devices (like those from Wyze or Tuya) use free apps like Smart Life or Wyze, turning your phone into the control center.
2. Smart Lighting: Brighten Up for Less
Smart bulbs are a gateway to automation. Philips Hue ($50+) is the gold standard, but these alternatives shine just as bright:
Govee LED Smart Bulb ($12) Govee’s Wi-Fi bulbs offer 16 million colors, dimming, and app control for a fraction of Hue’s cost. No hub needed—just your Wi-Fi.
Sengled Element Classic ($10) A basic white bulb (not color-changing), Sengled’s option is dirt-cheap and Matter-compatible. Pair it with a $20 Moeshouse hub for voice control. Where to Buy: Amazon or Sengled’s site.
Treatlife Wi-Fi Bulb ($9) This lesser-known brand delivers 800 lumens (bright enough for most rooms) and works with Alexa or Google Home via the Smart Life app. Buy a 4-pack for $35 to light your whole house. External Link: Check Treatlife deals on TechRadar.
3. Smart Plugs: Power Up Anything
Turn any appliance into a smart one with plugs. Skip TP-Link Kasa ($20) for these:
Geeni DOT Smart Plug ($10) At just $10, this Wi-Fi plug works with Alexa, Google, and the Geeni app. Schedule your coffee maker or fan without spending more.
Nooie Mini Smart Plug ($8) Tiny, affordable, and reliable, Nooie’s plug fits two per outlet. It’s a sleeper hit on Amazon with over 4-star reviews. Pro Tip: Use it to automate holiday lights for under $10.
Tuya Smart Plug ($7) Tuya’s ecosystem powers many budget brands. This plug is Matter-ready and integrates with the free Smart Life app. Grab a 4-pack for $25. External Link: Tuya ecosystem explained on CNET.
4. Smart Sensors: Security on a Dime
Motion or door sensors add smarts without complexity. Forget Ring ($100+):
Wyze Sense Starter Kit ($30) Includes a hub and two sensors (motion and door/window). Wyze is budget-friendly but well-reviewed. Add more sensors for $10 each.
Aqara Mini Motion Sensor ($15) Zigbee-based and tiny, Aqara pairs with a Moeshouse hub. It’s less hyped than Wyze but just as effective for triggering lights or alerts. Where to Buy: AliExpress or Aqara’s site.
Sonoff SNZB-03 ($12) Another Zigbee gem, Sonoff’s sensor works with Tuya or SmartThings (if you upgrade later). Detects motion up to 20 feet—perfect for small spaces. External Link: Sonoff review on Tom’s Guide.
5. Smart Locks: Secure Your Door Cheaply
Big names like August ($150) dominate, but these locks keep costs low:
Hornbill Smart Deadbolt ($40) Keypad entry, app control, and no hub needed. It’s a steal compared to August, though it lacks voice control without a hub.
Sifely Keyless Smart Lock ($45) Fingerprint, keypad, and app access for under $50. Sifely’s a newer player but gaining traction for renters. Pro Tip: Check landlord rules before installing.
Geek Smart Lock ($35) Basic but functional, Geek’s lock uses Wi-Fi and the Tuya app. It’s not fancy, but it secures your door affordably.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Smart Home for Under $300
Ready to build your setup? Here’s how to do it, step by step, with a sample $295 budget using the devices above.
Step 1: Plan Your Smart Home Goals
Ask yourself: What do I want to automate? Lights for ambiance? Plugs for convenience? Security with sensors? For this guide, we’ll create a starter setup with lighting, plugs, and a sensor—perfect for a small apartment or house.
Budget Allocation:
Hub: $25
Lights: $50 (4 bulbs)
Plugs: $40 (4 plugs)
Sensor: $30
Total: $145 (leaving room to scale).
Step 2: Pick Your Hub
Go with the Merkury Smart Wi-Fi Speaker ($25). It’s Alexa-enabled, cheap, and controls everything below via the Geeni app. Install the app, connect it to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and you’re set.
Step 3: Add Smart Lighting
Buy a 4-pack of Treatlife Wi-Fi Bulbs ($35). Screw them into your living room, bedroom, and kitchen lamps. In the Geeni app, group them as “Living Room Lights” and set schedules (e.g., on at 6 PM, off at midnight).
Step 4: Plug In Smart Plugs
Grab four Geeni DOT Smart Plugs ($40). Plug in your coffee maker, a fan, a lamp, and holiday lights. Use the app to schedule the coffee maker for 7 AM or turn the fan on when you say, “Alexa, cool me down.”
Step 5: Boost Security with a Sensor
Add the Wyze Sense Starter Kit ($30). Place the motion sensor by your front door and a window sensor in the bedroom. Link it to the Wyze app (free) and set notifications for movement when you’re out.
Step 6: Connect and Test
Sync everything to the Merkury speaker via Alexa. Test commands like “Turn on bedroom lights” or “Start the coffee.” Tweak schedules in the apps for your routine. Total cost: $130—way under $300!

Tips to Maximize Your Budget Smart Home
Start Small, Scale Up Begin with one room (e.g., living room lights and a plug). Add devices as deals pop up—Black Friday 2025 will be huge for smart tech.
Use Free Apps Geeni, Smart Life, and Wyze apps are free and robust. Avoid subscription traps like Ring’s $10/month plan.
Shop Smart Check AliExpress, Walmart, or eBay for bulk deals on Tuya-based devices. Lesser-known brands often sell there at steep discounts.
DIY Automation No hub? Use IFTTT (free) to link devices. Example: “If Wyze sensor detects motion, turn on Treatlife bulb.”
Energy Savings Schedule lights and plugs to shut off when unused. A 2024 study found smart homes cut energy bills by 15% (source: Energy.gov).
Expanding Your Budget Smart Home Over Time
Got $150 left? Here’s how to grow your setup in 2025:
Add a Smart Lock: Hornbill Smart Deadbolt ($40) for keyless entry.
More Lights: Two Govee LED Bulbs ($24) for color accents.
Extra Sensors: Two Aqara Motion Sensors ($30) for hallways.
Smart Thermostat: Wyze Thermostat ($50) to control heating affordably. External Link: Wyze Thermostat review on PCMag.
Total: $144. Now you’ve got a full-fledged smart home for $274!
Common Pitfalls to Avoid in 2025
Overbuying: Don’t grab a $100 hub when your phone works fine.
Wi-Fi Overload: Too many devices on 2.4GHz can lag—limit to 10–15 initially.
Ignoring Compatibility: Check for Matter, Alexa, or Google support before buying.
Skipping Updates: Budget brands like Tuya occasionally need firmware updates for security.
Why Lesser-Known Brands Win in 2025
Big names dominate headlines, but brands like Geeni, Treatlife, and Wyze offer 80% of the features at 50% of the cost. In 2025, Matter compatibility levels the playing field—your $10 Tuya plug works with Alexa as well as a $30 Kasa. Plus, these companies target budget buyers, meaning better deals and simpler setups.

Honorable Mentions: Unique and Interesting Budget Smart Home Devices for 2025
The main list in this ultimate guide gave you a rock-solid foundation for a budget smart home in 2025, but the world of affordable smart tech is brimming with hidden treasures. These honorable mentions didn’t quite fit the core setup due to their niche appeal or slightly higher learning curve, but they’re too cool—and too cheap—to ignore. From solar-powered sensors to DIY-friendly microcontrollers, these devices bring personality and innovation to your smart home without breaking the $50 barrier. Let’s dive into these unique finds and see how they can spice up your setup!
1. SwitchBot Mini Robot Arm ($40): Your Tiny Smart Home Butler
Why It’s Cool:
Ever wished you had a tiny robot to flip switches or press buttons for you? The SwitchBot Mini Robot Arm does just that. This compact, app-controlled arm physically interacts with your non-smart devices—like a light switch or coffee machine—turning them into smart ones without rewiring. It’s a quirky alternative to smart plugs when you’re stuck with stubborn old-school appliances.
Budget Appeal:
At $40, it’s pricier than a $10 smart plug, but it’s a one-time fix for devices that can’t be plugged in (e.g., wall switches). Plus, it’s reusable across multiple tasks.
How to Use It:
Stick it to a wall with adhesive (included), sync it to the SwitchBot app, and schedule it to flip your bedroom light switch at 7 AM. It’s Wi-Fi-enabled and works with Alexa or Google Home via a $20 SwitchBot Hub (optional).
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
It’s more of a niche gadget than a must-have. Most folks can solve the same problem with a smart bulb or plug for less.

2. EcoFlow Solar-Powered Motion Sensor ($25): Green Smarts
Why It’s Cool:
Solar power meets smart home tech! The EcoFlow Solar-Powered Motion Sensor charges itself with sunlight, eliminating battery swaps. It’s weatherproof (IP65-rated), making it ideal for outdoor use—like triggering porch lights or sending alerts when someone approaches your driveway.
Budget Appeal:
For $25, you get a motion sensor that never needs a power source beyond daylight. Compare that to Wyze’s $30 kit, which requires a hub and batteries.
How to Use It:
Mount it outside (screws included), pair it with the EcoFlow app, and link it to a smart plug or bulb indoors. Example: Motion detected = kitchen light on. It’s Zigbee-based, so add a $20 Moeshouse hub for voice control.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Outdoor focus and hub dependency make it less versatile for beginners than indoor sensors like Wyze Sense.

3. SONOFF MiniR4 ($12): The DIY Smart Switch
Why It’s Cool:
This tiny relay switch hides inside your wall outlets or light switches, turning them smart without replacing anything. It’s a favorite among DIYers who don’t mind a little wiring. In 2025, its Matter compatibility makes it a future-proof gem.
Budget Appeal:
At $12, it’s cheaper than most smart switches ($30+) and controls hardwired devices directly—no extra plugs or bulbs needed.
How to Use It:
Install it behind a light switch (basic electrical skills required—check YouTube tutorials), connect it to Wi-Fi, and control it via the eWeLink app or Alexa. It’s tiny (1.5 inches) and fits in tight spaces.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Requires installation know-how, which isn’t beginner-friendly compared to plug-and-play options like Geeni plugs.

4. Zemismart Smart Curtain Motor ($45): Automated Window Magic
Why It’s Cool:
Tired of manually opening curtains? The Zemismart Smart Curtain Motor automates your existing curtains or blinds with a motorized track. It’s a luxury vibe on a budget, perfect for lazy mornings or impressing guests.
Budget Appeal:
At $45, it’s a steal compared to premium options like IKEA’s $150 smart blinds. It’s customizable to your window size (tracks sold separately).
How to Use It:
Attach it to your curtain rod, sync it to the Tuya app, and set schedules (e.g., open at sunrise, close at dusk). Works with Alexa or Google Home via Wi-Fi.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Curtains aren’t a universal need, and setup takes more effort than screwing in a bulb.

How to Use It:
Wire it into your fan’s switch (basic skills needed), connect to Wi-Fi, and use the Smart Life app to adjust speeds. Pair it with Alexa for voice commands like “Set fan to medium.”

Budget Appeal:
At $20, it’s half the price of premium leak detectors like Flo by Moen ($50).
How to Use It:
Place it near a washing machine or water heater, pair it with a Zigbee hub (e.g., Moeshouse $20), and get notified via the Aqara app. Add a smart plug to shut off a pump if water’s detected.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Specialized use case—most beginners prioritize lights over leak protection.

Budget Appeal:
At $30, it’s cheaper than buying four $10 plugs separately, with bonus USB charging.
How to Use It:
Plug it into your wall, connect to Wi-Fi, and use the BlitzWolf app to control each outlet. Example: Turn off the TV outlet but keep the lamp on. Works with Alexa and Google.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Slightly pricier per outlet than standalone plugs like Geeni DOT.

Budget Appeal:
For $10, you get endless possibilities—far cheaper than prebuilt devices with fixed functions.
How to Use It:
Buy an ESP32 board (e.g., from Amazon), flash it with ESPHome via a computer, and add sensors (e.g., $5 temperature module). Example: Build a custom motion sensor for $15 total.
Why It Didn’t Make the List:
Steep learning curve—coding skills are a must.

Budget Appeal:
$25 for 6.5 feet of smart lighting beats Philips Hue’s $80 strips hands-down.
How to Use It:
Peel, stick, and connect to the Yeelight app. Sync it with music or set color scenes (e.g., “Movie Night Blue”). Wi-Fi-enabled, no hub needed.
