Have you ever heard of a fabric called 'vegetable cashmere'?
Soy silk, also known as Soy Fabric, is an eco-friendly textile that is gaining popularity among sustainable fashion enthusiasts. Soy fabric has a great drape and is very elastic, does not wrinkle or shrink.
Soy silk is made from leftover soybean waste from the soy food industry's manufacturing processes. This method is said to be entirely natural and free of petrochemicals, making it an extremely environmentally friendly product. As soy is a renewable, organic, and biodegradable resource, and soy silk is made from the waste left over from soy harvesting, the production of soy silk is generally considered non-harmful to the environment.
To begin making this type of fabric, the protein in soybean hulls is separated from other compounds. Following that, treatments are used to reduce the coarseness of the protein slurry. The resulting fibres are then extruded through spinnerets and are ready for production once dry. The soy fibres are then spun into yarns, which are then woven into long strips of fabric.
Thick soy fabric is warmer than wool and far outperforms polyester in terms of warmth, making it ideal for winter wear and soft, cosy cover-ups. Because of its chemical composition, soy fabric has distinct properties, this textile, for example, is UV-resistant and highly antimicrobial.
