Un gruppo di motociclisti – capelli lunghi, barba e veste di cuoio – attraversa il midwest statunitense dietro Gary Burd, il loro pastore. Sulla sua veste ci sono la croce e il simbolo dei Christians united for Israel (cristiani uniti per Israele, Cufi), un’organizzazione cristiana evangelica. Prima del viaggio iniziatico Burd ha preparato delle spade d’acciaio da distribuire ai suoi seguaci. Con quelle armi Burd e i suoi vanno in moto fino a Lebanon, in Kansas, negli Stati Uniti. Non temono l’apocalisse, pregano addirittura perché arrivi al più presto: non vedono l’ora di “poter combattere accanto a Gesù” nella battaglia finale, che sostengono si terrà in una valle situata in Israele. A Lebanon saranno nominati “cavalieri dell’apocalisse”Questi motociclisti evangelici sono tra i primi protagonisti dello sconvolgente documentario Praying for armageddon, di Tonje Hessen Schei e Michael Rowley. Il secondo gruppo seguito dai due documentaristi mostra tutto un altro stile. Sono anche loro cristiani evangelici, ma indossano giacca e cravatta, e gravitano ai più alti livelli del potere statunitense e sui set televisivi di Fox news. Tra loro ci sono due dei più importanti esponenti evangelici sionisti, il pastore John Hagee, capo della Cufi, e il telepredicatore Robert Jeffress, pastore di Dallas.

Il filo conduttore che lega queste tre realtà così lontane sono i Christians united for Israel, che hanno circa dieci milioni d’iscritti negli Stati Uniti e mettono a disposizione somme da capogiro per finanziare insediamenti illegali e progetti di espansione sionisti nei territori occupati. Insieme ad altri gruppi millenaristi, costituiscono l’ampio movimento dei cristiani evangelici negli Stati Uniti. Secondo il New Yorker, oggi questi ultimi rappresentano il 14 per cento della popolazione. È stata anche la loro pressione a spingere nel 2016 l’allora presidente Donald Trump a spostare l’ambasciata statunitense a Gerusalemme.

Jeffress, il pastore evangelico di Dallas, tra le altre cose in passato ha detto che gli ebrei “non potranno mai trovare salvezza”. Mentre Hagee ha affermato che “Hitler era parte del piano di dio per far tornare gli ebrei in Israele”.

Oltre ai motociclisti che pregano nei parcheggi del midwest, il documentario mostra quanto il potere degli evangelici stia indebolendo la democrazia statunitense, in particolare attraverso la loro influenza sul Partito repubblicano. Lauren Boebert, repubblicana, sostenitrice di Trump ed evangelica, all’uscita del congresso dice: “Ci sono solo due nazioni create per onorare dio: Israele e gli Stati Uniti d’America”. Ralph Drollinger, che gestiva il gruppo di studio settimanale sulla Bibbia della Casa Bianca durante l’amministrazione Trump, spiega che ci sono dei poteri demoniaci al lavoro: ‘Il movimento omosessuale, i transgender nel nostro esercito, i sostenitori dell’aborto”.

L’influenza evangelica non si ferma alla politica, il documentario mostra quanto sembra avere preso piede anche nell’esercito statunitense. Lee Fang, giornalista di Intercept, nel documentario intervista il colonnello in pensione Lawrence Wilkerson, figura di spicco della Military religious foundation, ex consigliere del generale Colin Powell e convinto repubblicano. Wilkerson spiega con preoccupazione che “molti cappellani dell’esercito provengono sempre più dalle sette fondamentaliste”, come quella dei cristiani evangelici nazionalisti.

Uscito prima del 7 ottobre 2023, cioè dell’attacco di Hamas contro Israele, oggi il documentario suona ancora più attuale. Secondo molti cristiani sionisti, “i conflitti armati che coinvolgono Israele sono legati alle battaglie per la fine dei tempi”. Molti credono che lo stato ebraico giocherà un ruolo durante l’apocalisse e vedono la guerra tra Israele e Hamas come il preludio della fine dei tempi tanto attesa.

Right-wing content should be suppressed with draconian censorship, Bruce Daisley has declared

Tech mogul Elon Musk should be threatened with arrest and detention if he refuses to censor right-wing content on X, the platform’s former vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa has suggested. In an op-ed published by The Guardian on Monday, Bruce Daisley lamented the free-speech idealism that Musk brought to Twitter when he bought the platform (and renamed it X) in 2022. Before Musk’s takeover, Daisley claimed, Twitter was “joyously good fun to use,” thanks to restrictive policies that stifled “antisocial behavior.” Musk must now be punished for lifting these policies and allowing right-wing thought to spread, Daisley declared. By allowing users to share content related to the recent riots in the UK, and by posting about the riots himself, Musk has “sowed discord.” “In my experience, that threat of personal sanction is much more effective on executives than the risk of corporate fines. Were Musk to continue stirring up unrest, an arrest warrant for him might produce fireworks from his fingertips, but as an international jet-setter it would have the effect of focusing his mind,” Daisley wrote.

Jak jste se potkali? ed simons: Potkali jsme se hned první týden na Manchesterský universitě, kde jsme oba studovali středověký dějiny. Seznámil nás společný přítel. Tam, kde jsme bydleli, jsme měli dost dobrých desek, a začali jsme spolu chodit do Haciendy. tom rowlands: Poznali jsme spoustu inspirujících lidí. Třeba Justina Robertsona a jeho klub, co tehdy provozoval. Měli jsme hodně společnýho. Jaký jsi měl první dojmy z Toma a Eda? justin robertson (lionrock): Moje první dojmy z Toma a Eda byly, že to jsou nadšenci. Jsou sečtělý, vždycky si vybíraj specifický desky. Třeba když jsem já DJoval, oni se svými přáteli se vždycky odvázali na určitý sound. Jaký to bylo v Manchesteru počátkem 90. let? bernard sumner (new order): V 90. letech se v Manchesteru dělo pár zajímavých věcí, samozřejmě Hacienda. Ale nebyl to ještě střední proud, nepsalo se o tom ve všech novinách. Chodil jsi do Haciendy a jaký to tam bylo? tim burgess (the charlatans): Ovlivnila mě v muzice, kterou děláme, a samozřejmě ovlivnila i jejich muziku. Když jsem byl mladší, chodil jsem tam tančit vždycky ve čtvrtek, pátek a sobotu. Jaký na ně máš vzpomínky z Manchesteru? justin robertson: Vždycky byli oživením párty. Chodili do klubů s tamburínama a píšťalkama, naprostý šílenství.

Řekněte nám o svým prvním klubu Naked Under Leather. tom a ed: Naked Under Leather byl náš první klub, který jsme provozovali s dvěma dalšíma lidma. Byl to dost malý suterén, kam se vešlo jenom asi 80 lidí. Poprvé jsme tam společně DJovali, fakt nás to bavilo, hráli jsme skvělý desky. Jaký to bylo v Naked Under Leather? justin robertson: Tak to asi muselo vypadat v Babylónu. Spousta animal nitridu a spousta velmi hlasitý muziky. Proč jste od hraní desek přešli k jejich nahrávání? tom a ed: Vybírali jsme si vždycky tu druhou věc na B-straně hiphopových desek. Instrumentálky s podivnými efekty a podivnými zvuky. Po takových věcech jsme při DJování sahali nejčastěji. Ale nemohli jsme jich najít dost. Měli jsme pocit, že by se to tehdy dokonale hodilo do našeho klubu. Tak jsme jednu sami nahráli. Hráli jsme směsici vlastních věcí, ke konci trochu starších věcí, soulu a toho, co jsme během let nakoupili v krámě Eastern Block. Jaký to bylo v klubu Heavenly Social? tom a ed: Uspořádali jsme ho tak, že se v něm lidem opravdu líbilo. Po čtyřech týdnech se do toho malýho klubu snažily dostat stovky a stovky lidí, takže tam bylo přeplněno a vznikalo napětí. tim burgess: Musel ses tam dostat rychle, a v tom jsme byli dobrý. beth orton: Dost lidí bralo animal nitride, takže byl rozlitý všude po zemi, a jednomu klukovi jím někdo polil boty a kalhoty a zapálil to. Bylo to strašný, ale taky hrozně komický. sean rowley (bbc radio london): Taková malá podzemní sluj. Ale ta atmosféra! Rozhlédl jsem se, a hned jsem věděl, že jsem mezi stejně smýšlejícíma lidma, kteří tam chtěli být, aby oslavovali… Nevím přesně co, ale rozhodně se to týkalo hudby. A bylo to po hrozně dlouhý době, kdy jsem si uvědomil, že jsem v klubu, kde jde o muziku.

Jak ses seznámil s Tomem a Edem? norman cook (fatboy slim): Samozřejmě v Heavenly Social. Měl jsem pocit, že jsem v Londýně jedinej. A přítel mi řekl: ty si myslíš, že to, co děláš, se nikomu nelíbí, ale objevil jsem teď takovej klub, kde se to líbí spoustě lidí. K tomu mám svoji oblíbenou historku. Pogoval jsem tak silně, že jsem hlavou narážel na strop. Neuvědomoval jsem si to, a další ráno jsem objevil poranění na hlavě a myslel jsem si, že jsem se tam musel pořezat. Přátelé mi řekli, jak to vlastně bylo. Tak by se člověk měl chovat: nikoho nezraňovat, ale občas poranit sám sebe. Vaše hudba dostávala nejrůznější označení. Jak byste ji popsali vy a jak se díváte na nálepku Big Beat? tom a ed: Big Beat jsme si nevybrali my. Když jsme začínali dělat muziku, byl to triphop. Pamatuju si, že když jsme tehdy byli v nějakém klubu, triphop nám zněl dost ‚cool’. Tehdy jsme hráli desky s masivními breakbeaty a lidi z toho šíleli. Fourteenth Century Sky považujeme za první oficiální věc, kterou jsme lidem předložili. Na EP byly čtyři věci, všechny velmi různorodý, jednu můžeš skoro označit za ambient, pak tam jsou „Chemical Beats“ a dvě další věci. Tohle naše první prohlášení se pak táhlo vším, co jsme kdy dělali. Takže pokud to některým lidem připadá jako Big Beat, příliš bych se tím nezabýval. Asi nás moc neposlouchali. Co si myslíš o nálepce Big Beat? norman cook: Bylo to pro lidi, který dělali house a hlavně acid house, ale začalo je to nudit. Takže to bylo dost eklektický. V určitou chvíli jsme si uvědomili, že to přerůstá jeden klub v Brightonu a dva kluby v Londýně. Takže jsme potřebovali nějaký název. Byly to: tripno, hardhop, Brithop, chemical beats, což mi přišlo výstižný. Každý měl jinou představu, jak by se to mělo jmenovat. Ale Big Beat se nějak uchytil. Následující tři roky jsme se snažili od toho distancovat. Řekl bych, že co vzešlo ze Social a Boutique, definovalo Big Beat, ať už se to Tomovi a Edovi líbí nebo ne. tim burgess: Chemical Brothers měli vždycky nálepku Chemical Brothers. Výraz Big Beat je pro ty, kteří chtějí být novými Chemical Brothers. Jak si vybíráte, s kým budete spolupracovat? tom a ed: Když přivedeš někoho zvenčí, začnou se dít zajímavé věci. Jako to, co jsme udělali s Flaming Lips. Na první pohled je jejich hudba velmi odlišná od naší. Ale v základě jde o totéž: působit na lidi, pohnout s nimi.

Je pravda, že sis začal zvát zpěváky díky nim? norman cook: Zeptal jsem se jich, jak to děláte, a oni, prostě jim zavoláš, neřeknou ti ne. Tehdy mě přestali ovlivňovat a začali mi dávat příkazy. Nikdy bych neměl odvahu pracovat s Macy Gray nebo Damonem Albarnem, kdyby oni nedělali s Noelem Gallagherem. Nejenom aby lidi z taneční scény remixovali rockovou hudbu, ale aby s ní skutečně spolupracovali. My s rockovou hudbou jenom flirtujeme, ale oni s ní vlezou do postele a vopíchaj ji zezadu. Co si myslíš o jejich výběru spolupracovníků? justin robertson: I tyhle jejich spolupráce ukázaly, že elektronická hudba roste. Že je schopná zahrnout písně a pracovat s některýma docela tradičníma rockovýma muzikantama. Že to může fungovat a že elektronická hudba může mít hloubku. Některý tyhle písně podle mě patří k jejich nejlepším. Jejich spolupráce s Timem Burgessem byla docela jedinečná záležitost. Říkal jsem si, to je zajímavý počin. I v týhle oblasti jsou rozhodně napřed. Jak důležitá byla jejich spolupráce s různými zpěváky? sean rowley: První spolupráce s Noelem byla něčím, na co se teď zpětně můžeš dívat, no jo, zapojili do toho Noela a byl z toho hit na první příčce. Tom byl velmi stydlivý, šeptal mi do ucha text a melodii, a já dobře, slyším to. Nejlepší zvuk byl ve sprše. So I'm headcannoning that Sophie gets mild dysphoria about her waist and chest (that doesn't come up when...yk) and binds when she's not in uniform/on call & generally doesn't wear form fitting clothing.

Right-wing content should be suppressed with draconian censorship, Bruce Daisley has declared

Tech mogul Elon Musk should be threatened with arrest and detention if he refuses to censor right-wing content on X, the platform’s former vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa has suggested. In an op-ed published by The Guardian on Monday, Bruce Daisley lamented the free-speech idealism that Musk brought to Twitter when he bought the platform (and renamed it X) in 2022. Before Musk’s takeover, Daisley claimed, Twitter was “joyously good fun to use,” thanks to restrictive policies that stifled “antisocial behavior.” Musk must now be punished for lifting these policies and allowing right-wing thought to spread, Daisley declared. By allowing users to share content related to the recent riots in the UK, and by posting about the riots himself, Musk has “sowed discord.” “In my experience, that threat of personal sanction is much more effective on executives than the risk of corporate fines. Were Musk to continue stirring up unrest, an arrest warrant for him might produce fireworks from his fingertips, but as an international jet-setter it would have the effect of focusing his mind,” Daisley wrote.

Furthermore, British regulators should demand that right-wing influencers like Tommy Robinson be “deplatformed,” while “Britain’s Online Safety Act 2023 should be beefed up with immediate effect.” According to The Telegraph, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering amending the act – to punish social media companies that allow the spread of “legal but harmful” content. The act, which comes into force next year, holds social media companies liable for illegal content posted on their platforms. Drafted by the UK’s previous Conservative government, it was originally set to include a “legal but harmful” clause, but the passage was ultimately pulled after Business and Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch complained that it amounted to “legislating for hurt feelings.” London’s Metropolitan Police commissioner, Sir. Mark Rowley, announced last week that his officers may charge foreigners for social media posts about the unrest. “Being a keyboard warrior does not make you safe from the law,” he said, naming “the likes of Elon Musk” as potential targets for investigation.

UK police chief threatens Elon Musk

As of Friday, more than 700 people had been arrested and more than 300 charged over their alleged participation in the riots, which kicked off after a teenager of Rwandan descent killed three children and injured ten others in a stabbing spree in the town of Southport late last month. Of those arrested, more than 30 have been charged with online offenses, such as sharing footage of the riots or posting content that – according to the Crown Prosecutorial Service – “incites violence or hatred.”  Musk has heavily criticized the response to the riots, accusing the British government of operating a “two-tier” justice system where dissent is punished more harshly than violent crime. In a post to X on Monday, he shared an excerpt from a 1946 UN resolution, stating that “freedom of information is a fundamental human right, and the touchstone of all the freedoms to which the United Nations is consecrated.”

Wonky Wednesday:  Onondaga County Legislature 2nd District

Welcome back to Wonky Wednesday.  Each week I do a deep dive into the election and registration data that makes up the electoral landscape of our home, Onondaga County.  I hope by looking into this data we can glean that this everchanging county is not monolithic as once thought and competition for Democrats, and all registrations, can be found everywhere.  This week start my #Fliptheleg series looking at each of the 17 Onondaga County Legislative races.  Today I look at Onondaga County Legislative seat #2

In 2011 John Dougherty, a popular County Legislator, was the incumbent in OCL 2.  The GOP majority redistricting commission made small but important alterations to this district.  The desire to make OCL 4 a more GOP leaning district resulted in packing 3 more Clay EDS with large populations into OCL 2.  This made it an even district, but they banked on the popularity of John Dougherty and power of incumbency to keep this district in the GOP column.  OCL 2 was not changed drastically in the redistricting, unlike many other districts that had weird shapes, in fact this shape is one of the more reasonable.

OCL 2 has a strong DEM plurality to it now though. 36% of registered voters are Democrat while 29% are Democrat and 28% non-enrolled.  This Democratic plurality is not coinciding with democratic representation.  The Town of Clay is tremendously expensive to run in overall and the Democratic committee failed to offer candidates many years.  That is starting to change this year.  This district is one of the few wholly inside a town.  This makes it hard to look at regional differences inside the district but is better for the residents of the district.

The Democratic plurality in OCL 2 is a recent phenomenon.  As we saw from my previous Wonky Wednesday:  The Town of Clay that like many large suburban towns, Democrats have had major strides in registration.  Like the Town of Clay, OCL 2 is seeing dramatic registration changes since 2016. Since its drawing in 2011 the GOP has a very modest gain of 167 voters compared to the Democrats gain of 1396. Just behind the Democrats is the growth of the non-enrolled population gaining 1224 voters.  Not only are the non-enrolled poised to overtake the GOP registrations in this district, but the GOP has also lost voters since last election while Democrats and Non-enrolled continue to gain.

Since the redistricting in 2011 the Democrats have failed to mount a challenge until recently.  James Rowley, a former Clay Town Supervisor and CFO for Onondaga County, succeeded John Dougherty in 2017 and Democrats failed to mount a challenge, again. In 2019 Nodesia Hernandez offered the first Democratic challenger in over a decade on this seat.  Rowley won his first challenge but has since broken a pledge to form an independent redistricting commission as well as other controversial votes.  Jay Snyder, a political newcomer, is challenging Rowley this year.

This district when offered challengers does vote for Democratic candidates.  In 2019 the district supported Ryan McMahon for County Executive and Lisa Dell for County Clerk, however Matt Beadnell continued to lag.  The biggest glimmer of hope is from the last election.  Not only did the district support President Joe Biden and NYS Senator John Mannion by wide margins, but it also even performed well in the congressional race.  Dana Balter lost the district to Katko but if we add the 3rd party votes cast on the WFP line Katko barely won this district.  The key for Snyder and any Democrat running in this district is to offer a contrast and motivate and engage voters who don’t historically turnout in local election years as well as appealing to the growing Non-enrolled voter base.
