an overview of desmond dewitt

i'm going to start of this blog by blurting out some thoughts about desmond. mainly because he's been on my mind quite a lot lately and his background is free standing from other aftee characters. 

i haven't particularly gotten into his childhood yet. desmond's story seems to be formed by going backwards so. yeah. in any case before he was the insomniac computing teacher at a school for exceptionally talent children he was an agent for an agency that worked outwith the laws and regulations of most governments.

he joined as a fairly young man in his twenties-- eager, boisterous and egotistical. he had been scouted for the agency after being under threat of arrest for breaking into classified files which, he claimed, he had done just because he was bored. he was brilliant and he knew it.

"This security system was designed by a bunch of bozos. Jeez. Like, I'm pretty sure I could fire missiles at Russia right now. I won't. But I totally could. Fuckin' cowboys."

he was paired with loissa, a field agent who frequently put him in his place. he was the tech expert and she was the guns of their operations. this lead to him mellowing out considerably, leading to an incredible partnership between the two. they ended up getting married during this time though it was more a platonic partnership than a romantic one. 

over the course of two years their missions consisted of gathering intelligence from foreign organizations, mostly medical research and methods of psychological torture. he assumed at the time that the organization simply used it as blackmail or sold the information on, so he didn't bother questioning it much at the time. 

until he was told he would be getting a transfer to their research department. 

it turned out this organization was already tainted by the early sweep of despair. they had used the intel lo and desmond had gathered to see if computer systems could alter a persons psyche and reality for use as a method of psychological torture to gain information. and there was a seemingly endless supply of human test subjects. when he tried to resist he was given an ultimatum: work for the organization, or they would hand a file of incredibly incriminating details of him to the government. he had little choice but to comply.

so for two years he was forced to torture people through computer simulations. it was during this time he began to suffer from the insomnia he is known for. even when he managed to fall into a restless sleep his dreams were plagued by nightmares, and he would often experience lucid dreaming, sleep paralysis and hallucinations. 

loissa knew that the job was slowly killing him and even if it didn't the organization would once they were done with him. she was the one that arranged their escape. 

"Dewitt speaking."

"Desmond, there is a car outside for you."

"--wait, Lo?" What--?"

"We have a window of eight minutes free from surveillance-- you need to get up from your desk, walk out the smoking exit and around the corner. You'll see a blue car with an American plate--"

"Woah, woah, hold it--!"

"Desmond. If you want to get out of here with me, please, just... get in the car. I don't know if we'll get this chance again."

and so began their life in hiding. over the next few years they lay low, hiding out in hotels, travelling and keeping on the move. desmond's insomnia never went away not matter how many herbal teas lo tried to give him. eventually he just started to supplement his energy with a caffeine addiction. 

eventually desmond received a message from a man claiming to be part of a school for exceptionally talented children. asking him to teach. desmond was understandably cautious, but was convinced to meet with a representative in mainland europe. 

"You’re a hard man to find, Mr Dewitt."

"That’s ‘cause I didn’t want you to find me.”

"I take it, then, you have finally considered our offer."

"Well, it’d be a step up from my last job."

"Yes, we know all about that—."

"No. No you don’t. You can’t know unless you were there, unless you had seen what they were doing. I mean, I still get nightmares about that place. I get them so often I should be used to them by now. I’m not. You never get over that sorta thing.”

"I see."

"It’s been… well, however number of years. I’m done hiding. And, heh, if you can find me I guess they could too. But y’know what? Being in the middle of nowhere teaching a bunch of private schoolkids basic code seems like a fuckin’ fantastic gig to me. Sign me up."

and that is how desmond ended up teaching at aftee. 

ofc he dies when the faulty are massacred. very last, it should be noted. but he lives on in the from of an ai program currently in lo's possession post despair.

basically one of my main regrets about aftee 4 was that i put a lot of thought into luka's mastermind clues and motives. i figured i may as well just upload my notes to google drive so people can read them if they wish. you need to download the file i think cus google drive doesn't do rtf files and i don't have msword rip

Like with Astronomy he’s constantly learning something new, and there is so much out there that is yet to be discovered. Like whenever he’d chat about astronomy he would be always excited about it and happy about it and talk about it until you fall asleep with boredom. So in a way he was quite optimistic about Aftee, once he was persuaded into going (that was a fun conversation but I’ll save that for another day) he was kind of looking forward to it, and then with the people he met there they’d ask him about astronomy and stuff which he’d be more than happy to answer. Like everyone would actually be kinda interested in what he had to say which was a first, and find out something new (the kids he grew up with thought he was a bit boring and weird and then there isn’t anything new to tell someone who is a professor of astrophysics - except a discussion every now and then). Wheeze yeah and being told by the person he’s telling this stuff to, that they enjoy hearing about and thank him for telling them something new then it makes him really happy about it and make him want to tell them more about space.

td;lr he’s overly optimistic about astronomy (and nothing else and tbf rn he’s not even optimistic about that rip)
