POEMS
Bago Aplaya
By Macario Tiu
Picture
Hinay ang tapya sa balod
Ug nagsugod na ang taob.
Namasbas ang pari sa bangkang de motor,
Ug lakip tang nawiskan sa bendita.
Uban sa mga gagmayng mananagat nga nanag-alirong.
Nalipay ako sa ilang kalipay
Nga nakaangkog himan sa panagat:
Mao kana ang atong gisaulog.
Apan hinay ang tapya sa balod
Ug nagsugod na ang taob.
Ug sama sa karaang magbabalak,
Akong nabati ang walay kataposang kasubo
Nga dala sa balod.
Apan dili tungod sa pangagho sa katawhan
Kondili sa akong kaugalingong kahimtang.
Ugma, mobiya ka na sa hangtod
Samtang hinay ang balod
Ug magsugod na ang taob.( Tropangjacque!)
Analysis of the Text
The poem itself stated and described the life of a fisherman. Even though fisherman is an ordinary job, they are still thankful. They embraced and contented in what they have. Being a fisherman is also one of the dangerous jobs. Specially when we have a bad weather the storms and big crashes of waves makes them struggle more, but they keep on going, cause they believe God is there whose leading them with a light in a pathway, who are also helping and watching them, doing their jobs just to catch fish so that they might help and support their families and do their full responsibilities to other people to earn small capitals.

Taphag
By: Teresa may Mundiz
Nong Porferio prepares the rice, eggs, and a roll of native cigarette for that day’s ritual. A son of a neighbor has had a fever for more than a week, and no medicine could seem to subside the illness. According to Anok, his grandson, they were just playing and shouting in the forest a fortnight ago. So Nong Porferio asked for Anok to help him do the taphag. It is also high time that his grandson learn their tribe’s ritual and panawagtawag.
“’Nok,” called out Nong Porferio, “can you please come out of the hut and help me here?”
Anok, in his brightly colored shirt and faded shorts, comes out of the hut. The boy lives with his grandfather because his school is just a kilometer away from his grandfather’s house. Both Anok and Nong Porferio have sunkissed skin, unkempt hair, lithe bodies, and honest faces. They are both Mandaya Kamayo living in Barangay Borboanan.
“Help me prepare the table for the taphag,” ordered Nong Porferio to the quizzical-faced Anok.
“Taphag-what?”
“Taphag is what we call our tribe’s ritual. During taphag, we prepare the table for our offerings to the spirits.”
“Are those rice and eggs for the spirits?” responded Anok almost with disbelief and excitement. He knows he is a Mandaya Kamayo, but he has not known about rituals or offerings all his 12-year-old life.
“Yes,” curtly replied Nong Porferio. “We have to do this because your friend has not been healed of his fever.”
Nong Porferio sets the buyo into the wooden mortar. He has to have his mama ready as well.
Anok, sensing the urgency of the taphag, quickly grabs on the bolo, goes at the back of the hut to get fresh banana leaves he will set on the table, then returns to where his grandfather is seen pounding the buyo for his mama.
“Tang, what else do we include in the taphag?” asked Anok. Indeed, he remembers another young boy whom he was playing weeks ago. He has not seen him after that, and he has heard about his fever. There was another neighbor who related on how this young boy’s stomach has swollen, too. “Tang?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, dong,” muttered Nong Porferio. “Please take out the chicken in the pot, and place it on the ritual table. Do not even try to put salt into it.”
“Why?”
“You know, the spirits…” jokingly responded the old man. “There has to be sweets like candies on the table, then, some rhum. But, again, no salt.”
Anok balances the pale chicken on the sartin plate as he walks towards the bamboo table filling up the gifts for the taphag. He sees his grandfather’s favorite rhum, still unopened, the eggs whose raw, hardened shell has the same color as the unsalted chicken, and a lot of candies. He wants one, but he has seen how Nong Porferio is also eyeing him. His eyes telling him, Do not steal from the spirits. Embarassed, Anok walks away from the table.
“They will be here in a minute,” remarked Nong Porferio.
“Nong!” came a shout from the distance. There are also other voices, leaves ruffling. They have visitors.
“Uy! come here,” ushered the old man. “Come near here in the table. I am almost done.”
Along with the entourage is the sick boy. He looks really frail, and his eyes have dark circles under them. His mother has been crying. “Please heal him, Tang.”
“We have to make peace, and ask the spirit to heal him,” came the reply.
Then, changing his usual clothes with a vest, and a piece of undergarment, both grandfather and Anok gather up the kamanyan leaves to build a fire. Anok fans the smoke as it rises up on air. Chewing on his mama, Nong Porferio lifts one by one the items on the table. He then chants a prayer, and moves toward the sick boy.
The smoke continues to rise, along with the taphag. Anok looks at his grandfather with pride and awe. He has not seen him in trance. Nong Porferio, in his old age, still moves lightly, circling the sick boy. And he guides the boy to move with him.
Anok feels the wind blowing, rustling the leaves of the trees around them. He sees the boy kneeling, his grandfather still in trance. Then, silence falls.
“Nay,” a weak voice came. It is the sick boy. His face no longer pale. A little smile forms his mouth.
“The spirits heal!”
“The spirits forgive!”
When everyone of the family gathers around the boy, Anok, also in trance, walks toward his grandfather. Nong Porferio is slumped, his head bowed down. He has fallen asleep after the taphag.

Friendship
It is cosmic. But why do we try
reducing it precisely to habits?
Perhaps it sleeps, too, and wakes
to a new day like we do.
It sits momentarily, reviews a list of needs
and few serviceable tasks in a day.
Perhaps it looks for a quick inspiration, too.
A good call, or a response to a message
which has not been read for a couple of hours.
Neither circumstances nor excuses will ever
lose its value. After conflicts and neglects,
it restores and seeks itself again.
Perhaps it finds a new space
sometimes: once in a week, a month or two.
How long can it travel alone? It learns
where it stumbles upon itself.
It does not know it loves
because sometimes it reads too much.
It raises a mirror to itself and gazes
long at what it only wants to see,
and throws a question it cannot even answer.
Only when it demands, it delivers
a disappointed look.
It also hates and does not accept,
even itself. When it is in pain, it goes back
to where it once found itself easy.
It strangles with both hands but stops
to a sight of love, open as widening palms.
Then it goes home, empties out its pockets
full of ever-hefty disquiet.
Later, before it rests, it remembers
and holds a new precious thought.
Only it knows how it always wishes itself best.

Bonsai
By Edith Tiempo
All that I love
I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box
Or a slit in a hollow post
Or in my shoe
All that I love?
Why, yes but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son’s note, or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a young queen
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.
It’s utter sublimation,
A feat, this heart’s control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size.
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
All life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child

All that I love
I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box
Or a slit in a hollow post
Or in my shoe
All that I love?
Why, yes but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son’s note, or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a young queen
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.
It’s utter sublimation,
A feat, this heart’s control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size.
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
All life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child.

McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics—Shortlist Announced!
The nominees for the fifth annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics are here!
Tumblr media
After reading scores of comics published in 2018, the judges have selected their top ten. In alphabetical order, they are: Be Prepared, by Vera Brosgol, sends young Vera, a Russian girl living in an American suburb, to summer camp—Russian summer camp, the only one her single mom can afford and the one where she just might be able to fit in,
The Cardboard Kingdom, by Chad Sell, follows a neighborhood of kids who transform ordinary cardboard into fantastical homemade costumes as they explore conflicts with friends, family, and their own identity.
Hidden Witch, by Molly Knox Ostertag, continues the story of Asler, hero of The Witch Boy, as he takes magic lessons from his grandmother and tries to help his non-magical friend Charlie escape from a curse that's trying to attach itself to her.
Last Pick, by Jason Walz, takes readers to an earth overrun by alien invaders, where only those too young, too old, or too "disabled" have been spared from abduction...but maybe the kids last picked can step up and start a revolution.
Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass, by Lilah Sturges and polterink, finds the Janes separated during an orienteering outing, thanks to a mysterious compass that others very much want to lay their hands on.
My Beijing: Four Stories of Everyday Wonder, by Nie Jun, introduces Yu'er and her grandpa, who live in a small neighborhood in Beijing that's full of big personalities—with a story around every corner and a hint of magic each day.
Onibi: Diary of a Yokai Ghost Hunter, by Atelier Sento, transports readers to the places where natural and supernatural meet, as it explores some of the lesser-known parts of Japan in a story that is part fantasy and part travelogue.
Peter & Ernesto: A Tale of Two Sloths, by Graham Annable, tells the story of two best friends who are nothing alike—Peter loves their tree and never wants to leave, while Ernesto loves the sky and wants to see it from every place on earth.
The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang, finds Prince Sebastian hiding a secret life―taking Paris by storm wearing fabulous dresses as the Lady Crystallia―and relying on the brilliant young dressmaker Frances, who guards his secret but has dreams of her own.
Sanity & Tallulah, by Molly Brooks, features best friends who live on a dilapidated space station at the end of the galaxy―but when Sanity creates a definitely-illegal-but-impossibly-cute three-headed kitten, the havoc it wreaks may mean the end of their outer space home.
Many, many thanks to judges Faith Roncoroni, Tameshja Brooks, and Nola Pfau, who were assisted by Kids Read Comics and A2CAF co-founder Edith Donnell!
The winner will be announced on Friday evening, June 14 at the Ann Arbor District Library

can’t sleep. gonna talk abt the gym leaders for my homebrew pokemon region
couple of notes:
bc this region was conceived as a TTRPG setting the gym leaders are meant to be fought in any order (save for one who must be fought last), so they have rotating teams depending on how many badges a trainer already has. that said they all do still have an “ace” pokemon aka the toughest in their party and the one to watch out for. they have a low tier ace, mid tier ace, and high tier ace.
instead of typing, the gyms all have themes bc i think that’s fun
gym leaders my have pokemon not normally found in the region. they’re supposed to be experts in their field ofc! so it makes sense to me they’d be doing some traveling in their lives
all gym battles are best 2 outta 3. i might change that for higher level battles tho
all character names are subject to change bc i’m Bad At Names
ok! here they are in order of them being written down in my notes
Leader: Rex. he gives the Scale badge as his theme is reptiles
i already talked abt him and Luna here, but the tldr is that he’s v passionate abt pokemon husbandry, and is v active in school/education programs
low tier ace: Aron. mid tier ace: Seviper high tier ace: Kommo-o
Leader: Luna. she give the night badge as her theme is nocturnal pokemon
like i mentioned, i’ve talked abt her before. tldr she pulls double duty as gym leader and head librarian. she’s usually busy and always tired. ppl joke that booking a match w her is half the challenge
low tier ace: Duskull. mid tier ace: Umbreon. high tier ace: Noctowl.
Leader: Rowan: he give the Forest badge as all his pokemon are arboreal
he’s a v quiet and reserved man. his gym’s locations in Sharpford has him living in the midst of protected forests. he’s not a pokemon ranger himself, nor has he ever been, but he helps out w the nearby ranger bases throughout the woods. however unknown to everyone he’s being paid off by a poaching operation to turn a blind eye and help cover their tracks
low tier ace: Skwovet. mid tier ace: Hawlucha. high tier ace: Trevenant.
Leader: Trent. they give the Mud badge as their pokemon are amphibious.
big conservationist. actually did used to be a ranger before they decided to settle down and work in education. the biggest friendliest guy you’ll ever meet. their gym being in Fermat means it’s surrounded by swamp and forest on all sides. with their pokemon perfectly adapted for this environment they occasionally join the rangers on search and rescue missions. has a bad knee from their ranger days, but they doesn’t let that slow them down
low tier ace: Mudkip mid tier ace: Lombre high tier ace: Seismitoad.
Leader: Lily. she gives the Breeze badge as most her pokemon’s primary mode of transportation is flight
might be a bit of an airhead (cue laughter) but she’s deadly serious when it comes to competitions. the windy seaside Metrona City is the perfect place for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and thanks largely to Lily’s efforts in bring the sport to Salmar Metrona City is the region capital for the Pokeathlon
low tier ace: Wingull. mid tier ace: Yanma. high tier ace: Altaria
Leader: Edith. she gives the Garden badge as most of her pokemon are grass or fairy type to aid in, you know, gardening
the oldest gym leader. she’s been manning the Corda Town gym and overseeing its greenhouses for decades now, and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. she’s known to the younger locals as “Auntie Edith”. she’s also p traditional. she believes that the league, the contest circuit, and now this “pokeathlon” thing have gotten to big. too many people visit to watch the events in person, and then they decide to move here, so then more marsh needs to be paved over to build the homes, so now more ppl here are making a living off the tourism, repeat the cycle ad nauseam.
low tier ace: Petilil. mid tier ace: Ribombee. high tier ace: Muk - Alola
Leader: Priscilla. they give the Junk badge as they research “artificial” pokemon, many of which are said to be discarded trash and the like
many ppl avoid going to them last bc, 1: the gym is located kinda out of the way and 2: all this research involves a lot of ghost and psychic types so the area around their lab/gym miiiiiight be a lil cursed. Priscilla looks like your typical mad scientist and acts like one too, but rly they’re just super enthusiastic abt their work. they also don’t see why ppl are so scared of their gym like, just don’t make eye contact w any dolls you might see? make sure to turn off all of your electronics before you get too close? do not try to pick up any trash you might see. come on ppl, it’s just basic safety here
low tier ace: porygon. mid tier ace: porygon2. high tier ace: porygon-z
Leader: Cora. she’s the only leader you have to fight last. gives the Terrain badge bc she specializes in terrain/weather/status effects and bc in order to have earned the right to face her you must’ve travel Salmar far and wide.
she’s the last gym leader bc her battle style is highly technical so it can only be preformed using higher level pokemon + it gives trainers time to master their own skills before facing her. her gym is in the capital of Salmar; Harmony City. she’s a p big celebrity but she always has time for new challengers. she’s been known to cancel and fully refund events/meet-ups if it means making scheduling a battle easier. another reason she’s located in Harmony City specifically is bc it’s the starting point for Victory Road. its docks are the only ones that take ppl to Bolbar island. from there spectators are taken to the league stadium, and trainers are dropped off to navigate their way to Coda as they choose
for now her ace is a klefki as i remember when those little Fucks owned the meta. it’s subject to change tho as i dig more and more into the pokerole meta

JULIO CORTÁZAR, AKEJANDRA PIZARNIK Y LA MAGA DE RAYUELA.
Tumblr media
Casi no hablaron.
(Fragmento)
“PD: Julio, fui tan abajo.
Nadja no escribe. Don Quijote, tampoco.
Me excedí, supongo. Y he perdido, viejo amigo.
—Alejandra
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
—Julio
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Tumblr media

As for your first question....the swamp is a very popular place for eggs and young pokemon to be abandoned...I may not be a hybrid myself but I couldn't stand seeing the poor children starve! Plus, I just love children in general~! Mmm this Aron and Lileep hybrid is quite the handful! Hopefully you can calm him down~!" 8 libros famosos no solo por su contenido

COVID-19 spreads to more countries as China sees cases drop to lowest level in weeks
The coronavirus spread to ever more countries and world capitals Monday — and the U.S. death toll climbed to six — even as new cases in China dropped to their lowest level in over a month.
A shift in the crisis appeared to be taking shape: Hundreds of patients were released from hospitals at the epicentre of the outbreak in China, while the World Health Organization reported that nine times as many new infections were recorded outside the country as inside it over the past 24 hours.
Alarming clusters of disease continued to swell in South Korea, Italy and Iran, and the virus turned up for the first time in New York, Moscow and Berlin, as well as Latvia, Indonesia, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Jordan and Portugal.

The worldwide death toll topped 3,000, and the number of those infected rose to about 89,000 in 70 countries on every continent but Antarctica.

Global health officials sought to reassure the public that the virus remains a manageable threat.
“Containment is feasible and must remain the top priority for all countries,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
Around the world, the crisis reshaped the daily routines of millions of people.

Across Japan, children stayed home after the government announced the closing of schools until April.
In Paris, the galleries of the Louvre museum were off limits. With Israel holding a national election, special voting booths were set up for those under quarantine. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel was rebuffed by her interior minister when she extended her hand to greet him.

At the United Nations, officials said they were postponing a major conference on women that had been expected to bring up to 12,000 people from its 193 member countries to New York next week.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned that the world economy could contract this quarter for the first time since the international financial crisis more than a decade ago.
“Global economic prospects remain subdued and very uncertain,” the agency said.

Nevertheless, the Dow Jones Industrial Average soared nearly 1,300 points, or 5 per cent, as stocks roared back from a seven-day rout on hopes that central banks will take action to shield the global economy from the effects of the outbreak.
Finance ministers and bank leaders from the Group of Seven major industrial countries said they will confer by phone Tuesday to discuss an economic response.
Health officials in Washington state, where a particularly troubling cluster of cases surfaced at a nursing home outside Seattle, said four more people had died from the coronavirus, bringing the number of deaths in the U.S. to six, all in Washington.

New cases were also reported in New Hampshire and New York.
In Seattle, King County Executive Dow Constantine declared an emergency and said the county is buying a hotel to be used as a hospital for patients who need to be isolated.
“We have moved to a new stage in the fight,” he said.
Over 100 cases have been confirmed in the U.S., with more almost certain in the coming weeks. Thousands of test kits were on their way to state and local labs, and new guidelines intended to expand screening were put in place.

“In this situation, the facts defeat fear. Because the reality is reassuring. It is deep-breath time,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
The message was echoed by global health officials, who said they were encouraged that even in some countries that had taken far less aggressive measures than China’s, the virus remains largely in check.
Because the virus is not transmitted as easily as the flu, “it offers us a glimmer … that this virus can be suppressed and contained,” said Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO’s emergencies chief.

China reported just 202 new cases, its lowest daily count since Jan. 21, and the city at the heart of the crisis, Wuhan, said 2,570 patients were released. At the largest of 16 temporary hospitals that were rapidly built in Wuhan in response to the outbreak, worries over the availability of supplies and protective gear eased, along with the pressure on the medical staff.
Dr. Zhang Junjian, who leads a temporary hospital in Wuhan with a staff of 1,260, said optimism is high that the facility will no longer be needed in the coming weeks.
But in other places, problems continued to multiply.

South Korea, with the worst outbreak outside China, reported 599 new cases, bringing its total to 4,335. The death toll rose to 26.
In Iran, a confidant of Iran’s supreme leader died from the virus. The Islamic Republic confirmed 1,501 cases and 66 deaths, but many believe the true number is larger. Its reported caseload surged more than 250 per cent in just 24 hours.
Italy’s caseload rose to 2,036, including 52 deaths. Officials said it could take up to two weeks before they know whether measures including quarantining 11 towns in northern Italy are slowing the spread of the virus.

In the U.S., meanwhile, four Americans exposed to the virus aboard a Japanese cruise ship were released from quarantine in Nebraska after testing negative.
One of them, Jeri Seratti-Goldman of Santa Clarita, California, said leaving the hospital was bittersweet, because her husband remained quarantined. Another, Joanne Kirkland of Knoxville, Tennessee, said: “My only question is, will my friends shun me after this?”
