Okay, okay, the past 20 hours have been A MESS.

Tbh I didn't prepare that much, I didn't take any courses or watch tutorials beforehand, I was still figuring things out while I am at it. And the easiest part turned out to be actually recording the audio, but later on it was such a mess! I uploaded it about 3 times to YouTube and it failed each time until I learned that it would work if I uploaded it from my phone, so I had to export all over again with lower quality and do it through my phone which Alhamdullillah it did work !!!!!!!! ✨

And I am trying to upload the audio to SoundCloud, it's sorta 1/3 way there which means that's gonna need at least 3 more hours..

But for now !!!!! The YouTube link is ready and I am soooo ready at this point! I can already hear the flaws and the mistakes and whatnot but homegirl can't even bother at this poinnnnnnt let it be !!!

Day 4.

Today went fine. I was quite productive in terms of life admin. Made a few phone calls and wrote a few emails I had been putting off. Prepared for my interview tomorrow - spent several hours on that in fact. Managed to get 10k steps just about, was literally power-walking on my little treadmill literally until midnight to hit my steps. In terms of mental health I was ok. I didn’t cry at all today! My cousin reached out to me and asked to meet up for Eid on Friday evening; I said no (because it would get in the way of my gym plans and I’d struggle to hit my step goals. I know this is silly of me but I’ve set up these little routines and plans for myself to keep me on track and I want to stick to them as much as possible) so she asked to meet for brunch on Sunday instead. It made me so happy. Just little things like this make such a difference to my mood and mental health. It keeps me sane.

In terms of drawing, these are my 2 doodles today. Again I didn’t follow any tutorials, I just applied and tried to repeat what I learnt already. They’re looking about the same as yesterday and the day before. I know it’s too soon to see improvement after just 4 days lol so I’m not disheartened. Consistency is good. What I am annoyed about though is that the lips I drew on day 1 look better than any of the lips I have drawn since.

I spent 15 minutes on the top drawing. On the drawing on the bottom I tried to do a smaller doodle in 5 minutes but it ended up taking me 8 or 9 minutes; I tried to get her to raise one of her eyebrows (just to give her some character and expression because all my drawings look quite blank) but it kept looking wrong so I kept erasing it and drawing it again. I think if I hadn’t been messing around with her eyebrows it would have taken me just 5 minutes. Maybe drawing from reference will help with that next time.

Tomorrow I have my interview. InshaAllah inshaAllah it goes well. I really am desperate. Hopefully I’m not too depressed after it and hopefully I’ll still have the motivation to draw. I think tomorrow I’m going to try and draw from different angles. The mikeymegamega tutorial that I followed 2 days ago also covers drawing the face from 3/4 angle and from the side so tomorrow I’ll try and draw the other 2 angles as well. Or maybe I should do hair first? I don’t know, we’ll see what I’m in he mode to do tomorrow.

In terms of draw a box… I did the same superimposed lines exercise again. Um. I really need to spend more time doing that. They advise a 50% rule - that you spend max 50% of your drawing time on the draw a box challenge and the other 50% doing something, well, more enjoyable. I’m taking it too far probably, I think I might only be spending around 10-20% of my drawing time on the draw a box exercise. In fact I’m only really doing it to warm up before my doodles. I really need to spend more time doing it. So that’s another thing for tomorrow… if I have time I guess. I also practiced circles and I think I’m getting much better at those now at least.

hi and belated eid mubarak!! i love your gifs and they have made me interested in gifmaking! i was wondering if you had any advice/tutorials for a photoshop illiterate who wants to make gifs? thanks!

so I taught myself photoshop and the first bit of advice I would give is to let yourself be bad at it. I deffo think that is easier said than done esp if you're a perfectionist, but you're going to start out with basic things and you're not always going to get it right. and that's fine because ultimately gifmaking is for fun. for me, anyway, it helps keep me sane, lol, so if there are imperfections in my gifs - which there often are - I don't mind so much. I look back on a lot of my earliest gifs and I just hate them. the colouring, the text, the everything basically. it's so bad. but giffing is something that gets better with practice I think.

I've made a couple giffing tutorials here and here but I reckon you'd need to learn the basics before you can start thinking about selective colouring and sharpening and other things like that.

another tip would be to try and download high quality versions of whatever you're giffing. I'd say at a minimum you need 720p but ideally 1080p because it really makes a difference to your gifs' quality.

logos and watermarks - for the love of god, try to crop those out if you can. I'd much rather see less of a character's head if it means I don't have to see an ugly watermark that can ruin a gif. especially if you then add text on top of that.

if you have poc in your gifs, or even if you don't, just be aware that shows can often wash out characters' skin tones etc. you also don't want white characters to be too pink, lol.

when giffing, if you have any sort of "night light" (yknow the setting that reduces blue light to prevent eye strain) on, make sure to turn it off before you start colouring, as that will affect what your gifs look like to everyone.

I'd say start off with making gifs and focus on how to colour them properly, before you start making gifs with text. when you do make gifs with text, feel free to play around with different fonts - there are loads of free font websites on google you can use.

if you want, you can use something like trello or even a word or google doc to keep track of all your giffing ideas, and try to match the scene to the lyric or poem or whatever quote you're using, if it's that kind of text gifset. and of course remember to proofread the text on your gifs and on your captions.

I'm sure there are lots of photoshop tutorials out there for beginners. am not sure where to direct you for those as I mostly learned it by ear, and it was probably over eight years ago that I started messing around with photoshop myself. but I wish you luck, anon, and am flattered that my gifs made you want to start!

Day 3. I didn’t do this while watching tutorials, but instead I just tried to bear in mind the concepts form the tutorials I had used from yesterday.

One of the drawings from yesterday I said the face looked too long, so for the first drawing today I think I over-corrected and made the lower face too small. And too pointy. The second drawing I think I got the length of the lower face better but in trying to correct the pointy-ness from the first drawing, I think I made the jaw in the second drawing too rounded. Despite these differences, as well as the intentional variations I have tried to make in the eye shapes, … and also the unintentional changes in things like their mouths…. These drawings are looking very same-y. They’re the same person. I suppose that can’t be helped for now. I am too new to this to be stressing over the fact that my faces look the same. The fact that they’re all bald isn’t helping. Hair is going to make a big difference in adding variations to my drawings.

The reason I did only 2 is because I left it til so late in the day to get started and now I’m quite sleepy. I should try and do it a bit earlier on in the day instead of right before bed.

I drew in pencil today. First time picking up a pencil in decades probably. I’m remembering how I hate the scratchy feeling and sound of pencil. I used to hate it as a kid as well. When we started suspecting my nephew has autism and started learning about autism, this is one of the things that popped into my head. How the way pencil on paper aggravated my senses may have been an autistic trait. That being said, even though I hate it, it really is nice being able to erase the sketchy marks. Although THAT being said, I also hate how having the sketchy marks erased makes the flaws jump out. The sketchy marks used to hide them.

My mental health wasn’t the best today. I was kind of productive, I got a bit of life admin done, as well as some cooking and cleaning, and a jog on my treadmill. But I spent the time in between doing all that just crying. It’s Eid in 3 days and I’m going to be spending it all alone. I’m so incredibly depressed and I just don’t know what the point of continuing to live is. I hate myself and I hate my life and I wish I wasn’t here any more.

For the draw a box challenge, I did the same thing again. Just the superimposed lines exercise again. They’re really messy so I don’t feel like I can progress to the next exercise until I’ve got this down a bit better.

Tomorrow I’m not sure how much time I’m going to have… I have an interview the day after so I should prioritise that over drawing. I will still try to doodle at least 1 of these sketches. I am trying to commit to the 10 minute rule. I will doddle from bed if I have to.

I will spend maybe 2 days more trying to get confident doing this before doing the face from different angles. The mikeymegamega tutorial I followed yesterday actually is about drawing the face from 3 different angles so that’s next on the agenda. And then hair.
