Screenwriter Alex Garland's debut as director has a lot going for it: a tightly provocative and suspenseful Oscar-nominated screenplay (also by Garland), a superb trio of stars, and special effects that don't overwhelm the story. The effects won Oscars for Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Williams Ardington, and Sara Bennett, overcoming competitors with far more flash and dazzle: Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller), The Martian (Ridley Scott), The Revenant (Alejandro González Iñárritu), and Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens (J.J. Abrams). For once, special effects were kept on the human scale, largely to present Ava (Alicia Vikander) as the ambiguous cross between human being and robot on which the screenplay's exploration of the ethics of artificial intelligence depends. Ava (whose name is a variant spelling of "Eve") is the creation of Nathan (Oscar Isaac), a superwealthy tech genius who made his fortune with an Internet search engine not named Google, which he uses as the software for his experiment. He lures a young coder, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), to his isolated retreat on the pretext that he wants Caleb to apply the Turing test on Ava. Nathan's unstated aims are far more extensive, and Caleb sees through them quickly. But neither of them is quite as quick on the uptake as Ava. Gleeson is convincingly geeky as Caleb, and Isaac, in yet another performance that establishes him as one of our most chameleonic actors, evokes the self-absorption and questionable ethics of any number of tech billionaires. But it's Vikander who steals the honors with Ava's sly mixture of naïveté and nascent cunning. The only thing I can fault Ex Machina for is a conventional sci-fi ending that feels out of keeping with the intelligent questioning of the middle part of the script and seems too much like a setup for a sequel.

Killing Eve is good with....jump cuts (but technically they are not jump cuts right? Just being able to cut at the right time?

That scene with Niko asking Eve about her trip getting cut off then we jump to the next scene (and the answer: ‘Moscow’ --- supered)

One thing I do look back on while jumping through scenes in this Episode...was....the glove compartment.

Villanelle flicks at it....and in the finale Eve does too. 

Is that an echo of both their restlessness? Both wanting this chapter to be over so they could move on to the next thing?

Review: Laura, Soho Theatre

Normally, when a play calls for audience participation, I would kindly decline, tip my hat and moonwalk out of the building. It’s also why I avoid sitting in the front row. Laura, however, is such a high-energy, laugh-out-loud romp of a play, that you can’t avoid being sucked into the action.

Written and performed by Elina Alminas, Laura kicks off before you can get too comfortable in your seats. With the house lights still on, a woman rushes onto the empty stage. The blank slate around her adds weight to her appearance, dressed in a wedding gown and veil, mascara running down her face. Her tearful sobbing and wide-open eyes give her a crazed look, someone we might try to ignore or at least not get too close to.

We discover that it’s Laura’s wedding day, but her groom is nowhere to be seen. However, the canapés and chilled champagne are already paid for, so why not enjoy them. Thus, we become one of Laura’s wedding guests, suddenly finding ourselves sitting next to Joe, Laura’s new flame whom she drags onto the dance floor, or in front of Bianca, who Laura chooses to take to the Maldives on the honeymoon since her so-called fiancé hasn’t shown up. Sadly, I wasn’t made one of Laura’s companions, but every time a new person is dragged into the limelight it is a joy to hear the whole audience embrace them with cheers and applause.

One of my favourite things about Laura is the accompanying soundtrack. We go from Brian Ferry’s cheesy soft rock single ‘Slave to Love’, to the gloriously exuberant ‘I Will Survive’. The songs are so perfectly chosen that they elevate each moment rather than drowning it, helped along by the energy Alminas emanates as she dances along.

It is the strength of Alminas performance, which gracefully navigates the world of audience interaction, where anything could happen. You are there for her. You want to listen to her. Heck, you would go after any man that ever hurt her in this way. Even at her lowest point, as she pours Xanax pills over her wedding cake and digs in, downing it with champagne, does she offer a moment of lightness by leading the audience in a guided breathing exercise.

Alminas being both writer and performer suits this piece well. It creates the intimate setting the play needs to work, an intimacy where you feel Laura wants you to enjoy yourself, but at the same time you can’t help but feel guilty for laughing at the poor woman’s misfortune.

I truly hope this isn’t the last time we see this piece performed. It is rare you find a play where everything just fits, and where a single character can suck you in and you willingly go along for the ride. Alminas is a performer who truly becomes one with her character. Smeared make-up, cake stained wedding dress and all.

I read recently about the Vicar of Bearstead, who returns a £100 deposit paid by couples whose marriage service begins within twenty minutes of the published start time, but retains it if the service starts later than this, distributing it between the bell-ringers, vergers, choristers and organist.

Road traffic incidents and other unavoidable situations are taken into consideration. It’s a policy that someone like Laura (Elina Alminas) probably wouldn’t have a problem with: taking to the stage dressed in a bridal gown while the house lights are still up, the usual hellos and welcomes are dispensed with. “Come on! Hurry up!” is one of Laura’s less crude remarks to audience members who entered the theatre space, turned into a wedding venue, after she did. To be fair, it is indeed highly irregular to arrive after the bride.

The play eventually comes full circle in its departure from convention, but for the most part, there’s a lot of talk about how marriage is seen by Laura as the path to happiness. Whether this was because of her upbringing or external pressure to conform to a certain lifestyle where, to misquote the song, sisters ain’t doing it for themselves, isn’t entirely clear. What is infinitely more obvious is that ‘Johnny’, the bridegroom, is nowhere to be found – Laura goes as far as interrupting herself to call “the bastard” but is only answered by a voicemail. Again.

This, then, is a dark comedy, with plenty of interaction with the audience, who assume the roles of guests at this wedding that will not now take place. But as Laura is at pains to point out, everything has been paid for, so we may as well enjoy the disc jockey’s music, and there’s also the matter of cutting the cake. Oh, and there’s a photographer.

Not wanting to just talk about herself until carriages at midnight (or whenever the wedding was supposed to have ended – for the purposes of this production, it is to be assumed the venue for the ceremony is the same as the one for the reception), Laura redirects her fury from Johnny towards the ‘best man’, and other guests, spilling the beans about various people in a game of ‘truth or dare’ in which the only option is ‘truth’, every time. It’s a hoot. My own response to assertions made against ‘me’ was one of those ‘first thing that comes into my head but please, please don’t put your foot in it’ moments. Nobody approached me to complain afterwards so I assume I did okay, and Laura’s ability to almost seamlessly incorporate whatever replies she received was a sight to behold.

Does it all end happily for her in the end? I’m still not sure about that, and not just because I don’t want to give too much away. The guests happily clap along to a rendition of ‘I Will Survive’, which suggests a message of strength and defiance, but given this is the third time she’s been stood up on the big day (by different men), can a leopard really change its spots? Either way, I liked the ambiguity, and it’s a great production, compelling and intense, with a touch of fantasy and absurdism thrown in. A thoroughly convincing performance, equally powerful and sincere.

This performance was partially created as a response and rejection of the stereotypical roles women are most often offered in film and on stage. FemaleArts called it an ‘unflinching look at woman in the throes of ‘having an emotional episode’. It sends across a feminist message that stands against the world, where women are brought up to believe that there is nothing else to life except marriage. Elina is coming from Eastern European background, where this is still a very predominant topic.

It is the day of Laura’s marriage and the house is full of guests, but the groom Johnny is nowhere to be seen. Will he come? The protagonist of the play has a breakdown when her groom doesn’t arrive to the wedding because they had an argument the night before. As a result Laura looses herself completely and overdoses on booze and antidepressants whilst exposing her vulnerability to the guests. The audience will experience Laura’s story from the hysteria and anger to the helplessness and failure, reaching epiphany towards the end. The audience will take part in the events that will unravel on the day of the wedding and will be the actual guests with whom Laura will be sharing her story.

Expect an intimate experience of the wedding gone wrong. Laura is going to reach out to people and beg for compassion and sympathy but instead will fail in her need to succeed. However, the journey that she will make and the things that she will establish in her encounter will change her priorities and life entirely. In her debauched self-rediscovery she seeks a clearer understanding of the future and finally realises that she has been wrong all this time: ‘everything happening now is just the beginning’.

LAURA Written and performed by Elina Alminas The Etcetera Theatre 5-6 August 2017 Part of Camden Fringe ‘Alminas is a force of nature’ ★★★★ Jilted at the altar (for the third time apparently), Laura is gonna have this wedding anyway, groom or no groom. The audience become the wedding guests, and over an hour this ‘vintage inspired wedding fail party’ sees Laura reach soaring, manic highs, and excruciating, dismal lows. The definition of tragi-comedy, Elina Alminas exploits her superb rapport with the audience to play with our emotions as we watch the building up and breaking down of a woman in the throes of a personal crisis. Alminas is a force of nature; entering in a clear state of distress, the energy never wanes, but shoots off in a variety of unexpected and exciting directions. Alminas is clearly a gifted comic, but she also has the nous to deliver painful emotional sincerity alongside it. There are moments of true pain, and she plays them as such, pulling on our heart strings and ultimately heightening the comedy as a result. The performance is full of bravery; Alminas (literally) hurls herself into it, and into the audience as well. It is easy to miscalculate audience involvement, but Alminas melts ours hearts, terrifies us, then melts our hearts all over again. It was a true joy to be involved in. The piece itself is paced well; and is structured well emotionally. It is so much more than a blundering maniacal woman crumbling after yet another rejection (although it does also have that). It’s observation on self-love is particularly striking. It doesn’t shy away from the difficulty so many women have in allowing themselves show self-compassion, of celebrating the individual, without needing outside validation. When she decides that this is a good thing and that this is the marriage of herself to herself, I genuinely wanted to get up and celebrate with her. It’s a bit like watching Lear in the storm, if Lear wore a wedding dress and tried to OD on Xanax and chocolate cake. The only thing I would say is Alminas needs to make sure she keeps herself open to the rest of the audience when she has someone on stage with her; she’s so focused on them which is wonderful but it was the only time I felt slightly cut off from what was happening.
